Unscary Announcement

“Whenever I see a heading like that,” says Admin, “I think double-talk from the get-go.”

“What should it be then?” says Spence.

“How about – Announcement That May Be Moderately Scary At First Blush?”

“A bit of a mouthful, no?” Spence says.

I open my eyes: No food to be seen. Not a scrap.

“The point,” says Spence, “is that this blog won’t be affected at all, will continue to operate as it has since time immemorial. The news is that there is now a brand-new Facebook place to go for Chet news, sneak peek excerpts, fun and games.

I’m at the door.

Sometimes Admin mutters. He’s muttering now, something about Mark Zuckerberg, Watson, Alan Turing. All perps, most likely, although the names don’t ring a bell.

I’m still at the door.

Welcome ocean lover, shotgun rider, DeNiro quoter.

    Good morning, Melanie and all.

We here are comfortable with our blog. Facebook is too big and impersonal. We like the intimacy of this site. We are friends here, whereas FB is just somewhere to go to look at pictures or gain info.

Did you know that the logo of Apple computer is often erroneously referred to as a tribute to Alan Turing, with the bite mark a reference to his method of suicide? Dan is OUT today. My sister, a teacher, is on Winter break and decided to take him on a date.

He was totally (as teens used to say) excited. Called her yesterday and said he had a list if 16 things he wanted to do. She suggested prioritizing them. But he wouldn’t hear of it. Luckily, he lost his list this morning before they left.

Honest, I did not hide it!

I was looking a site that was mentioning top books of the world ends and what’s left variety.

Not my usual fare, but I had read some of them, 1984, Brave New World, The Handmaiden’s Tale etc . . .

Found one I thought my Guys would like, World War Z (Zombie book), one called, Never Let Me Go (which I thought Dan would like because he likes Japanese writers), and one I thought I’d like The Drowned World by J.G. Ballard.

I can get the first two no problem. Just going to ask before I do. The third???
Not on Kindle, but I can get a USED paperback for ONE HUNDRED THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS.

    Yeah, right.

Melanie, Back to the tomato topic. We are going to start ours around mid March, about 9 weeks bwefore outside planting. Wish we had a green house, but maybe in the next house.

What we do have is a shelving unit in a south facing window, the best exposure for inside planting. We have some regular fluorescent lights mounted above each shelf. That combo does an ok job for growing. The plants are not as robust as the ones you buy, but they do catch up in a couple of weeks after being planted outside. You cannot find these plants at the stores, with the exception of the more commonly known heirlooms, so if you want the tomatoes, you still have to grow them yourself.

Rio, with your friend on her new health kick, we can still send you some seeds if you want.

Staff and Wolfie, when are you going to start yours?

Melanie – the book The Road is a favorite. They made a movie a year ago that was a flop. I knew that book couldn’t be made into a movie. Mom has it on her kindle and when she finished it she went right back to the beginning to read it again.

Rio, Didn’t think that was “your cup of tea” but thought we would ask anyway. Unfortunately, we can’t send plants to you. Not quite as bad as trying to ship a puppy, but still not a good idea. The garden will be a positive project that may help her mother’s mental outlook, and will provied some yummy food, low in salt for the dinner table. Try some green beans too, easy to grow and so good.

Melanie — Regarding the book Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro, we haven’t read it (and it was made into a movie this year; mixed reviews), but the author also wrote Remains of the Day (disregard that movie too) which is probably one of the most elegantly written books we have ever read. So, it may be worth a try, but we would actually recommend Remains of the Day even more, although it may not fall in the category you are looking for.

Here’s the Wikipedia article on Alan Turing. He was convicted under the same law that sent Oscar Wilde to prison for two years. Both bad days for the British criminal justice system. Why in the world didn’t they test the apple for cyanide?

Bee, We read the Wikipedia article on Turing. It seemed to us that the apple was the culprit, but that he might have used that as a way of making it easier on him mother. Guess he wanted her to think it was accidental, or maybe it was. Interesting info, boy have we come a long was since the 1950s.

Will write more later, but right now, we are watching the beaver eating twigs under the closest apple tree to the house.

Some guy came up and told us that it must have been hit by a car, because it was just in our driveway making a threatening stance. By the time we got out there, it was fine, just eating twigs.

Unfortunately, our smallest maple tree has been covered by the snow plow past the fence we put around it. Hope it survives.

Mom is up a frazzle tree right now. She has been attempting to install a simple wifi printer for her mom all day. Now the blasted computer, after being rebooted, but up a black screen message, something about usb overload. We did not add anything to the usb, in fact, we unplugged the previous printer. Mom’s mom had to go to a meeting, so she left mom there with Epson support (4th call), who accidentally hung up on her. Hi everyone –
just checking in for a minute. One of Mama’s co-workers came to the very hands on place to work with a terrible cold, but didn’t tell anyone. She didn’t work for a couple days, and then cme in today, hacking, sneezing and coughing, and THEN tells Mama that she was really sick the other day when she was in.
So now Mama has come home with the Cold from Hell. She is sneezing her nose off, aches from eyelash to toenail and can barely keep her eyes open. So, she is being sensible and going to bed.
The good news is that because she is so sick, Daddy is putting us up on the bed to snuggle with her and make her feel better. Hopefully she will be better tomorrow and we’ll have more time on the blog.

Our last frost date in ND is May 21st. So we start ours about the first of April. That gives us 6 weeks and maybe more depending on the weather. We do put them out as soon as possible but we don’t do any of the wall of water stuff. However we do use upside down ice cream pails if it gets too cold. That works for a while.

RIO!! Your friend has probably already done this, but she needs to let the doc know that she is allergic to the Sycamore trees. This could be part of her problem.

Your bookmobile thought got me thinking. A mobil library van comes by our library every once in a while to exchange books for the town.

If your friend’s knee swelling is being caused by inflamation and the doc is not having any luck figuring it out, allergies should be considered.

I am an allergy queen. I am allergic to a lot of things because of a certain medicine they gave me for the HCV. It caused my immune system to kick up. After I was taken off of it, I still had the HCV, but also arthritis and all sorts of allergies.

If your friend’s immune system is in overdrive, yes, swelling can be a problem.

Staff, Barb is planning to put her plants out between May 15th and 20th, but she found that 6 weeks of inside growing isn’t quite enough for the heirlooms. Maybe they grow slower, or maybe it is just our lighting conditions. Last year she did 8 weeks and this year she is going to plan on 9.

Where is Siber? Hope all is ok.

    Melanie,
You are up high that is why your growing season is shorter. If you were sea level like North Dakota you would have a longer season.
Barb, I will take your advice about the heirlooms and start them earlier. Now all I have to do is remember to pick up the seeds when I go back in mid March. …
    Good night all,
Mr. Husky I hope you are returning to us soon.

Third Day!…If he, SiberH, is missing tomorrow, it makes me think we all need a back-up plan… snort!…We each need a contact person or animal that one of our family members can contact in case something, er.., really bad happens to one of the Plunderers….sniffle!…I don’t want one of us to just “disappear” and is never heard from again… sob! sob!sob!…I know it is morbid to think about, but I for one want to know what happens to my friends…..snort!

Justified: Rio: I Saw Episode 3 yesterday. It had an interesting ending. You are right. Boyd really is a good actor. He really keeps you guessing what he will do next. I am glad you can get it On Demand now.

Goodnight, y’all! I’m really bummed that Mom couldn’t get my book — er, I mean my girl’s book — today. So I guess I’ll just go to bed and pout about it! And even if Mom orders a copy tomorrow, we’ll still be behind everyone else in getting their copies AND the inside joke — whether it’s overblown or not. Bummer!!!

Mollypop: There is nothing new on any of the Facebook pages yet today. Is there really bad weather in their area?

Rio: I like your idea of emergency contacts. What is the plan? (Looks like we need the same thing for Chet etc.)

We agree about emergency contacts. It’s snowing here like crazy. Mom will try to dig the car out soon because then the 35 mph winds will start. Mom couldn’t get to the bird feeder and the cardinal was hogging it. It’s a cardinal feeder but of course for all the birds. So Mom poured seed all over the patio which really made the juncos happy.
