Uggie Hangs ‘Em Up
“Uggie’s retiring,” Spence says.
“Who’s Uggie?” says Admin.
“We’ve been through this – the Jack Russell star of The Artist and some other movies.”
“So he’s going out on top, huh?” says Admin. “Unlike so many other movie stars I could name.”
“Go on. Name some.”
“That would be malicious gossip.”
“So therefore?”
Admin is silent. No surprise there – Bernie handles the so therefores.
Welcome Sadie.

Good morning Chet and all.
9:15 am on January 27th, 2012
Uggie saw that the Royal’s mum was retiring to do the things she loved and decided that was a great idea!
Happy Anniversary Dan and Zoe!
Happy Birthday Joshie, friend of frogs and bicycles, and Barb’s favorite son.
I’m walking to work because it is warm! (-14 C or approx 15 F).
9:19 am on January 27th, 2012
Happy 61st Anniversary Dan and Zoe!
Josh would kill me if he knew I was calling my 32 year old man Joshie, but what the hay!
He probably won’t mind tho, if I post a couple snaps of his new bike shop, The Bike Haven.

Good morning! We have not been able to post or read much this week, because Mom keeps kicking us off the computer to work on problems at work…whatever that means.
Rio, thanks for posting the link to AJ’s race. We will be looking for updates this evening, but Mom & Pop have to go to a long goofy meeting tomorrow morning. What a drag.
Welcome to Sadie…she is a beauty!
9:53 am on January 27th, 2012
Uggie retired. As Admin says, best to leave the limelight while you are still in it.
Dan and Zoe: A Very Happy 61st Anniversary!!! Enjoy the pizza. Some of us will be by later for the crusts.
Great photos of the bike shop, Maggie. Happy B-Day to Barb’s favorite son!
Another qualifying race day. Masquers will soon be manning the website looking for updates. Meanwhile we are off for the weekend to house-sit for @1 son. Will be back on Monday.
A Good Morning to B, Dawson, Barb&Magpie, Melanie, the O.Howlers and Everyone. Have a Great Weekend!

Golden!… Uggie is nominated for two Golden Collar Awards…snort!…I didn’t know there was such a thing…sneeze!…Do they hand these out at the Oscars or is there a separate awards show for this?…heh!
Apron!….My friend really, really wants an apron that says, “Have a nice day…somewhere else” like Macy’s Paw’s….chorkel!…I wonder if Staff would make her one if there was money involved…heh!
10:03 am on January 27th, 2012
A Golden Collar Award! I could win that when I play Princess is Chet’s movie. Yes! Moi moi moi.
10:06 am on January 27th, 2012
Tracking!….Update!..snort!…Hold onto your hats and scarves because the Rose Bouquet has been processed and has now arrived in the correct Postal Zone… Wooooo!….This means it will be delivered today. Just hope someone is home to receive it….grunt! …And someone here really hopes it is in One Piece…sniff!
10:20 am on January 27th, 2012
Project!….Someone asked if I knew what my friend is working on now….sniff!… All I know is it will take thousands and thousands, maybe even millions of little bitty bits of paper to make….heh!…She said a Kat placed the order. When I looked annoyed she said, “It was a Kool Kat.”…sniff!….So that leaves out AbbieTheKat and the Herbals…chorkel!
10:25 am on January 27th, 2012
Melanie: What has my retirement started?
Sam: You would look even more beautiful in a golden collar.
Happy anniversary Dan and Zoe.
Happy birthday Barb’s favorite son.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ZOE AND DAN!!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROGMAN JOSHIE!
We get the ‘puter today cuz Mama has her hands in clay, and those goofy Corgis are hanging out under her feet. Her friend has dubbed her new work area as “The Mud Room”. Hope the accessor that is giving Melanie such connips doesn’t hear about it.
Glad to hear Uggie is going out on top. Nothing sadder than an overage Jack Russell on Botox…..
Rio – we are the Ultimate in Koolness! You can just kiss our butt- – -erfly shaped eyebrows! giggle

It’s the 256th birthday anniversary of Mozart.

Happy Anniversary to Dan and Zoe!
Happy Birthday to Joshie…we really love that bike shop!
Rio, Kat is denying having placed any flower orders, and she is the Koolest Kat we know.
Bear, is that wind done howling?
When does AJ’s race start? We are guessing 8:00 pm EST. is that right?
11:26 am on January 27th, 2012
I think I heard that Uggie was being passed over at the Oscars, so the Golden Collar must be somewhere else. I believe they had been asked to give out a special award to him but declined. Boo to them!
11:27 am on January 27th, 2012
Yeep!….The Rose Bouquet is “Out for Delivery”….snort!… The Goats are distracted by Joshie’s most excellent Bike Shop, so no worries there…heh!
11:40 am on January 27th, 2012
Okay, it’s a lot more fun playing here than talking to assessors.
She kept telling us everything that we knew. I kept saying I know that put if you multiply … No, that was wrong, you see this and that and this and that.
Finally got her calmed down enough to multiply for square footage … Oh, hmmm. Dashes to the computer, hits some buttons and says, wow, hmmm. You’re right.
Duh.
Anyhoo, she re-ran the numbers; our assessment is much less BUT now it has to go before the board to have them approve the abutment.
We will be going to that meeting. AND Zoe is calling her lawyer to find out if she should do anything else.
The bulldozer was out in force but nice! She had a really cute baby there, but he would only smile at Zoë.
12:16 pm on January 27th, 2012
Wolfie!…Please check your SDD and report back…sneeze!
12:17 pm on January 27th, 2012
Uggie is doing the right thing to go out on top. Dogs have more dignity than two-leggeds.
There is a Golden Harness Award for Iditarod sled dogs.
Happy 61st Anniversary to Dan and Zoe! That is fantastic!
Barb, Hope the bike shop does well for Josh.
Rio, Check your SSD.

Rio, Check your SDD again.
12:38 pm on January 27th, 2012
It is -36 at the kennel this morning, the dogs have been fed and watered in we will head to the starting line in a couple of hours. The race starts at noon AK time which I believe is 4pm for the Howlers, and 2pm for those who aren’t allowed to leave their yard.
The race consists of two mileages a 200 and a 300. In the end, AJ signed up for the 200 mile race; I asked if he was diasappointed and he said ‘no,’ and that he will run some longer runs between now and Iditarod. This is a race where handlers are allowed (and expected) to help at the checkpoint/layover so Jeremy and I will head to the layover around midnight tonight—a bit before AJ expects to arrive—we will help park teams, pick up any of our dropped dogs and clean the area once the team leaves in the morning.
I was haunted by the onset of the stomach flu last night…Ugh. I won’t let the stomach flu in the way of the cheesecake.
SiberH: Don’t forget that Snowhook recognizes our own Golden Harness Plunderer for making our 2012 entrance fee possible.
Happy anniversary to Dan and Zoe!
Hoppy Birthday to Frogman Joshie!
12:48 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rebecca, I mailed you my photo this morning. My Iditarod tag shows up in it.
Take care of yourself and don’t over do it.
1:02 pm on January 27th, 2012
Go Snowhook! Is the layover for the 200 at Oil Well Road/Morgan Cabin?
Inquiring minds want to know.
B.Stover: Your retirement, The Royals’ Mum’s retirement, and Uggies’s.
1:30 pm on January 27th, 2012
Melanie: The layover will be at the Kershner checkpoint.
AJ has already given me ‘lock the door’ insturctions not to handle dogs for our team or other teams like I normally do so I don’t hurt my back.
1:34 pm on January 27th, 2012
Happy Anniversary to Dan and Zoe.
Happy Birthday to Josh.
Siber-H – Could you email me that picture of you with your Iditarod tag so I can post it here?
1:43 pm on January 27th, 2012
I just mailed Brandy’s picture to Snowhook. Go Snowhook!
Melanie: I see….a rash of retirements!
Yes, I would like to see the picture of SH with the Iditarod tag.
1:46 pm on January 27th, 2012
Mollypop’s Mom, umm Could Rebecca email it to you once she receives it? (whispering) Remember who you are asking to do this.
1:59 pm on January 27th, 2012
Alright, it’s go time. Sort of—teams are asked to be at the start a couple of hours before the start of the race. Trucks will be parked in the staging area, vets will visit the dogs again, and I will do a lot of standing around because I’m supposed to lock the door. 🙂 I will post if I can between now and then, but AJ is slated to leave at 12:22 AK time; he drew bib #11.
2:13 pm on January 27th, 2012
Siber-H – (oh for crying out loud) Do you only have a real photograph? If so, how did the real photo get taken? Maybe on a digital camera? Then what happened next to turn it into a real photo? Your admiring public wants to see this.
2:26 pm on January 27th, 2012
Mollypop’s Mom, lol Yes, I only have a real photograph that was not taken with a digital camera. It was taken with one of those Kodak disposable cameras. Walgreens turned it into a real photo.
2:32 pm on January 27th, 2012
MollysMom!…Maddening, isn’t it?…grunt!
2:35 pm on January 27th, 2012
I am so cracking up! Dad just stopped by to see what mom and I were laughing about.
I’ll be back in a couple of hours or so.
2:47 pm on January 27th, 2012
We reviewed some posts we missed while Mom kept us off the blog all week, and we see that Rebecca received our photo. Hurray, we are going to Nome!!!! Twirling!
2:51 pm on January 27th, 2012
Waiting!…I wonder what the A-Team does while they are standing around waiting to start the race…..sniff! …I bet there is a lot of Yarking…heh!
2:59 pm on January 27th, 2012
Is Whitey-Lance on the team?
3:06 pm on January 27th, 2012
Okay, I think AJ will be leaving 4:22 our time. Or he’ll be leaving in 20 minutes.
Brownies are cooling!
3:17 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rebecca, We think you should heed AJ’s warning and take it easy. Staff already started off a new set of falls. You don’t want to be # 2 do you?
3:41 pm on January 27th, 2012
Worried!…I’m worried about that Rebecca…sniff!…She is still recovering from that nasty fall and now she is getting the Flu….wuffle!…I hope she doesn’t push her luck and end up with something worse. I wish she would stay home with her cheesecake and not stay up till midnight. The handler can help AJ and the Team…..grunt!
3:50 pm on January 27th, 2012
Melanie, Any idea yet when they will consider letting Dan come home?
4:05 pm on January 27th, 2012
Delivered!….The Roses have been delivered!…snort! …I repeat, The Roses have been delivered….heh!
4:15 pm on January 27th, 2012
Standings!…Nothing interesting has been posted in the Standings yet…sniff!…AJ’s start time is in 7 minutes!…Wooooo!
4:39 pm on January 27th, 2012
Yea, the goats didn’t get them!
Onward A.J., and good luck!
5:13 pm on January 27th, 2012
My eyelashes are still thawing so I can’t see very well to type, but the team is on their way. I repeat, the team is on their way! AJ has young dogs in team again so he plans to pace and camp along the trail; he will run the team just as they train.
My stomach has settled a bit which is good, but standing around for so long in such frigid temps started to have an impact on the hand I hurt in the ol’ slip and fall. AJ brought me my big mitts and chemical handwarmers. My job was Snowhook’s storyteller as people came by our dog truck and eventually, I served as the leader hook—Snowhook was the only team that upgraded for the leader hook position to be filled by a human being—moi—instead on a regular old snowhook. I held the lead dogs in line as AJ and Jeremy hooked the rest of the team to the line.
Now, we wait.
5:14 pm on January 27th, 2012
I only recognize the name of one other musher in the 200 race besides AJ. That is Karen Ramstead and her team of purebred Sibers.
GO SNOWHOOK!! WOO WOO
5:16 pm on January 27th, 2012
and wait
5:22 pm on January 27th, 2012
SiberH: Karen was parked next to us at the starting line; she has a great laugh. She runs pure breds. I looked at her team and wondered if they might resemble you.
While we wait, Annabelle helped me put together a little something special for youse all. Our dog truck is the one in the middle and Annabelle did her best to stand in as our Chet.

5:33 pm on January 27th, 2012
Love the picture Rebecca and Annabelle is great!
5:41 pm on January 27th, 2012
Photo!….Really great photo with Anna-Chet….snort!… Is the sun going down already there?…sniff!
5:50 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rio: That picture was taken at 1130 this morning. I didn’t realize that Annabelle was doing her impression of Chet until I got home and checked. I only had a second to snag a picture before my phone froze.
5:50 pm on January 27th, 2012
Headlamp!… Does AJ have a headlamp to see the trail in the dark?…snort!… Or does he put them on the team…heh!
5:51 pm on January 27th, 2012
Ditto, love the picture, and that really could be Chet!
Rebecca, stay warm, and don’t get that had chilled!
5:52 pm on January 27th, 2012
Beautiful photo Rebecca! Thank You.
5:57 pm on January 27th, 2012
Go Snowhook! I better start paying attention. I thought the race started tomorrow. Rebecca, please take care of yourself. Thanks to you and Annabelle for the cool picture.
SiberH: I can relate to your techno-ignorant self. You know how to use the Iditarod Insider site so you know more than I do.
6:02 pm on January 27th, 2012
Dawson, You won’t have any problems with the Iditarod Insider.
6:04 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rio: AJ has a headlamp with him, but won’t run with it all the time when it gets dark. He trains in the dark so he is comfortable with it, and like Chet, the team doesn’t have problems with the dark like Bernie and the rest of us. Sometimes he’ll put small red lights on the lead dogs if he has a lot of road crossings, but that isn’t the case this time.
Dawson: A word of warning, the Inisder can be addictive.
My eyelashes are completely thawed, my bunny boots are warming by the fire, and I’ve added another log to the flame.
6:06 pm on January 27th, 2012
Extrememly addictive
6:26 pm on January 27th, 2012
For those of you want to blur over, Zoë brought back a whole bunch of pizza crusts.
The Pack had a great present for Dan and Zoe. I’ll tell you about it a little later.
So Bella, what did the Don Bowers web site mean by “The start was a little more eventful than we would have wished (don’t ask).”?
6:31 pm on January 27th, 2012
Bella, when you unfreeze, check your SDD.
All of a sudden it’s very windy here.
6:43 pm on January 27th, 2012
Once again, alone …
6:50 pm on January 27th, 2012
Melanie: I walked to work this morning. It was very nice out but when it came time to walk home the wind was brisk and the temperature had cooled down by 10+ degrees. Brrr. I wonder what happened at the start of the race. I’m waiting to hear about the Pack’s present to Dan and Zoe.
6:55 pm on January 27th, 2012
I’d like to know what they meant about the start of the race also.
7:11 pm on January 27th, 2012
I keep laughing about Mollypop’s Mom’s response to Siber H and his “real” photograph.
7:16 pm on January 27th, 2012
It is funny isn’t it Dawson.
7:20 pm on January 27th, 2012
I took a shower to get warm and feel better.
The surface of the staging area was ice and wouldn’t allow the break on the sled to get purchase. I believe at the last minute, someone was voluntold to help the teams to the starting line by way of snowmachine. He drove behind the team, team after team, hooked to the sled and was able to control the team to the starting line until it was time for them to leave. One of the first teams to leave did so without the benefit of the snowmachine and didn’t feel like stopping. I think he was caught at the last moment at the starting line, but I’m not sure as I was very busy tending to my duties as a leader hook. There was a problem hooking up the sled to the snowmachine for a couple of teams, AJ included, that delayed them a bit in getting to the starting line. It doesn’t appear that they were penalized for a late start. Getting the teams to the starting line was the only near drama or excitement that I saw, but something might have happened that I’m not aware.
Melanie: Checked and responded.
7:45 pm on January 27th, 2012
Melanie, Did Zoe have pizza with Dan at the rehab place?
The Royal’s Mum is in her final countdown. I think she might really stick to it. We are proud of her.
7:45 pm on January 27th, 2012
Hi everyone!
Just a quick stop by.
Rio: Under your watchful eye, the Rose Bouquet arrived today, safe and untouched by any TMGs. The Prof accepted the package.
I have always admired the art work of Rio’s friend. A couple of months ago, I made an off-line request to her, asking if she might be able to make a small bouquet of roses that could be framed for me. Luckily for me, Rio’s friend took on my request.
As lovely as the roses looked in the pictures Rio posted, they are even lovelier framed, and in person! The Prof’s mouth hung opened as he admired the roses! He is just amazed at what Rio’s friend did!!
Rio and friend, thank you so much for the roses…I LOVE them!!! Roses are my favorite flower. 🙂 I told Rio’s friend she should absolutely post her Curly Tail e-mail on the blog, because I’m pretty sure I’m not the only who would like to own her work. What do youse guys think?
P.S. Rio, I loved the business card. Is that Beau’s shadow on the card??
I’ll be back soon!
Go Snowhook!!!
Happy anniversary Dan and Zoe!!!
7:48 pm on January 27th, 2012
We just got home. Great photo, Rebecca, and great impersonization of Chet by Annabelle.
We received something double-special in the mail and we hope that means good fortune for AJ. And we also hope Rebecca is not overdoing with her hurt paw.
7:50 pm on January 27th, 2012
First a picture by Donna Quante on the Don Bowers’ website of our TEAM!
7:53 pm on January 27th, 2012
BTW: Sorry, Alice.
8:00 pm on January 27th, 2012
I’m glad to hear the MGs were thwarted again for Rose’s roses and the Howlers double surprise!
Rose: Belle Starr has been very worried about you; some might even say worrit! She tried to blur some chicken noodle soup to you, but what with one thing and other—the one thing being the irresistable smell of said soup and the other being the irresistable taste—she had to make several attempts to get it to you.
There is another photo of AJ on the DB website. He is so handsome, but I may, nay I am partial.
Whitey-Lance is sitting this race out.
8:01 pm on January 27th, 2012
Well furry and non furry friends, it was quite a spectacle! Zoe went down the the re-hap with Pizza. The Pack had already decided that we were leaving 15 minutes after her. They got their costumes on. I wish you could have seen them in their Pirate Costumes (though Rose did wear a tutu). With a clanging of swords and swishes of hats they climbed into the Element. They practiced all the way down. And let me tell you NINE NEWFOUNDLANDS singing operetta is LOUD!
Then I let them out in front and they surged into the waiting room. Zoe was bringing down Dan in his wheel chair. I sat at the piano and to the tune of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirate King song from the “Pirates of Penzance” that Pack went all out! Strutting their stuff, clanging of swords! It was amazing. I wasn’t able to tape it but Franklin wrote it out for me.
They received a standing ovation! Encore, encore. Tails wagged, hands clapped, Zoe and Dan cried! Then The Pack all shouted “Happy Anniversary!” and we left.
8:05 pm on January 27th, 2012
Franklin:
Oh, better far to live and eat
Under the River Bear flag, a treat,
To be a dog of Zoe and Dan,
With a canine heart in a canine clan.
Away to the cheating world go you,
Where Kats are all well-to-do;
But I’ll be true to the song I sing,
And live and eat, a Newfie King.
For I am a Newfie King!
And it is, it is a glorious thing
To be a Newfie King!
For I am a Newfie King!
The Pack:
You are!
Hurrah for our Newfie King!
Franklin:
And it is, it is a glorious thing
To be a Newfie King.
The Pack:
It is! Hurrah for our Newfie King!
Hurrah for our Newfie King!
Franklin:
When I sally forth to seek my treat
I help myself to a royal sweet.
I counter surf, oh yes it’s true,
Which a well-bred monarch oughtn’t do;
But many a Kat on their made up throne,
If he wants to call his crown his own,
Must manage somehow to get through
More dirty work than ever I do,
For I am a Newfie King!

Great photo, Melanie, Thank you! Love the anniversary party story.
Rose, Good to hear from you!
8:09 pm on January 27th, 2012
Melanie: That sounds like quite a spectacle and like a lot of work! I can’t imagine that Zoe and her man, Dan wouldn’t love the gift.
8:13 pm on January 27th, 2012
Here’s the other picture of a certain giant. Done by the same woman.
8:19 pm on January 27th, 2012
That woman is a good photographer…excellent photo of AJ. Love the wheel dog with the smiling eyes looking the camera.
8:23 pm on January 27th, 2012
Need to get some sleep tonight. Maybe I can be on early with Bella (if she hasn’t gone to sleep by the time I get up).
Going to be sleeping with a flashlight tonight. Had an ice storm last night and today and now very windy.
Take care all those out on the snow.

Rose!… We here are so happy that you are happy with the Roses…snort!… The timing is supernatural for sure. For months she could not get to your project but just when you needed it the most she had it finished….Wooooo!… Praise be to the Lord of All Creation for his most perfect timing…chuffle!

I wish I could have heard the Newfs singing.
8:35 pm on January 27th, 2012
YEEP!….Those photos of AJ and the Junior-A-Team are wonderful!…snort!…Thanks to Melanie for posting them…WOOOOOOOOO!… Go Snowhook!….yippppeeeeee!
Newfs!… I almost laughed out loud over the Newfie Pirates and then the amazing Newfie King song….chorkel!…What a production! I’m sure even Clarkson would be blown away by it….Clap!Clap!Clap!…Bravo! Bravo!
8:42 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rose!…You and one other person are the only owners of that certain business card….heh!….After considering copyrights she decided to have an amazing artist friend create a new and improved business card (thanks Melanie!!!)…sniff!… Same concept only it is unique and no one else can say they own it…heh! …Oh and NO that is not a photo of Beau on a Rock. Are you kidding? That guy wouldn’t leave the yard if you begged him to…grunt!
8:46 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rebecca:
I was wondering where that little thermos of chicken soup on my kitchen counter came from. There was a trail of sparkly stuff leading from the front door into the kitchen…I should have known Belle had blurred by.
8:48 pm on January 27th, 2012
Hurrah! For the Newfie King and his pirate friends + ballerina. Nobody broke a leg. Singing, crying, laughing, clapping and wagging! Hurrah! For Dan and Zoe + 61 years. Congratulations!
Great pictures of our team and AJ by Donna Quante. Thank you.
8:51 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rio: Regarding your earlier question about AJ and the headlamp, I was just remembering when he ran this race last year. AJ was in first place with the second place team not far behind. AJ kept looking over his shoulder to determine the distance between he and the other team by seeing the second place team’s headlamp. If he could see the second place team, the second place team could see him. AJ turned off his light and ran the rest of the race in the dark. At the award banquet the second place team said he had no idea how far ahead AJ was so he slowed a bit thinking that AJ was far gone.
8:54 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rio: Now I am doubly honored. To own the Rose Bouquet, and to be one of only two people to own your friend’s business card. I’ve been twirling since I opened the package. Im a bit dizzy now, so I to go to bed….
9:02 pm on January 27th, 2012
AJ and team are through the first checkpoint—Nowhere. It is reported that he is one of the first teams running the 200 to the checkpoint. They are having problems with the HAM radios, but can account for all mushers.
9:03 pm on January 27th, 2012
I’m so dizzy. I meant to say I NEED TO GO TO BED! And I forgot an apostrophe.
SiberH: Thanks, I’m glad to see you and the rest of youse guys!
Nighty night and sweet dreams!
9:03 pm on January 27th, 2012
Goodnight! ….Rose! Sleep tight.…sniff!….Someone here is very happy that the Rose Bouquet has found its new home…wuffle!

Hey Plunderers! Greetings from the middle of the mitten. Nothing but good news here to report. My two-legged brother who works at the car dealership had been promised a raise for-e-v-e-r. Patience paid off…he got a $200 per week raise, which is a B-I-G deal as the kid has worked his patooty off for years. He is skipping and singing (while drinking beer) in joyful celebration. Mom has been patient too. At her 1 year anniversary working for the mitten state she was told that her raise would be more than expected. She got two bumps up from what she expected, and was told that her boss and her boss’s boss were going to jump through some hoops to see if they could give her another “special” bump. Bumpity, bump, bump…the news came through today…she got a 3 bump special, which is almost $8000 per year more than last year. This is still less than what she was making at the hospital when she was laid off 3 years ago, but she is so thankful to be employed and to do a job that she loves, that she accepted the job with the significant lower pay and she had to drive 1 hour each way to get there. As you know, we moved last July, so we are very snug in our lovely 1 bedroom apartment, and I love all the other nation members that live close to me. She has no plans to retire for another 15-20 years. All in all, a lovely day.
Congrats to Dan and Zoe, and hope Bella and her cheesecake are safe and warm. We are eagerly awaiting news of AJ and the runners. Hope all is well and they are having a blast on the run.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ZOE AND DAN!!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROGMAN JOSHIE!
Sure you are sorry Rose, NOT! But I forgive you.
AJ looks amazingly calm on a sled doesn’t he? I noticed it in the picture from the first race this season also. Can he sleep on the runners?

Rio, We meant to mention earlier, that show you watched last night, The Finder, is produced by the same people as Bones. They sort of did an introduction of him in one of their shows, where they went to him to help with a killing in the Everglades. It is a little quirky, but then so is Bones. We did not watch it last night for some reason.
Would have loved to see the Newfie production earlier! I bet Franklin was stunning!

More updates: The standing are up to date. Without the time offset, AJ was the second team to arrive at the checkpoint, just one minute behind the front runner. She left the starting line before he did. He appears to have dropped four dogs. My guess is two of the young guys, Radley and Marco and possibly Wyatt and his best girl, Annabelle. Annabelle-bananabelle is getting on in years and exploring the idea of retiring—B is a trend setter.
Rio: Did I not mention that ham was involved in the race? I’ll also be taking some beef jerky to AJ when we go to the layover.
More to Rio: Rolls, slides, glides—I love it.
Jasper: This is excellent news about the bump in salary. It sounds like you have an job situation where the intrinsic means more than the extrinsic. Congrats!
Staff: Most mushers doze on the back the sled, but that makes it easy to fall off and loose your team—not good, not good at all. AJs sled is what is called a trail dragger meaning it has a section behind the main section where he can sit down. We originally got a trail dragger sled because of my back, but now he runs only trail draggers.

Wow – what a day we have missed here.
Melanie and the Newf G&S Production
The arrival of Roses to Rose
The departure of AJ to Nowhere
The tech education of Siber (hahahahahah)
The twirling of Darth Pugger
What a day! We need catnip….

Rebecca, you answered my question before I could ask it. I was wondering why AJ had only 12 dogs and others had 14 or 16.
Thanks.
I have to go take a nap cause my body is sore. I was good all day but forgot to keep up with my Tylenol and I am sorry now. The only black and blue spot is the heel of my right hand. I didn’t know that you could get a black and blue spot there.

Alice!….I told Rose if she didn’t like the Rose Bouquet she should send it off to you…heh!…See, I’m always thinking of my old friends…chorkel!

Rio! Twin Posts. Does that mean we are really really good friends?
9:42 pm on January 27th, 2012
Dropped!….Rebecca, what happens to the Dropped guys?…sniff!…Does Jeremy take them home or do they stay somewhere else till the race is finished….wuffle!…Poor Annabelle, I bet she is tired tonight….sniff!
Headlamp!…Very cool story about the headlamp…Woooo!

Staff: Get some rest. I found out, just as you have, that you can bruise your hand. Last week a heart shaped bruise appeared in the palm of my injured hand. My backside was black and blue—to be expected—but also had bruises appear on the front of my thighs which find odd.
9:46 pm on January 27th, 2012
Thanks for the updates Rebecca. Go AJ and Dogs!!!
Staff, Feel better soon, but you will be sore for a few days.
Jasper, Congratulations on the raises!
9:51 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rio: A dropped dog is a dog that the musher has taken out of the team. It could be for a lot of reasons: injury or illness, fatigue, youth, the desire to take up with B on her easy chair for this race. If AJ is doing his job well (and I haven’t known him to ever do otherwise), he will drop a dog as a matter of prevention—it certainly doesn’t mean the dog is a bad dog. Jeremy and I will head to the layover at about 1130 tonight and wait for the team to come in. We will take the dropped dogs home with us and tend to them as they need. We plan on being at the checkpoint over night helping race volunteers park teams, etc. We can help AJ do chores—he has to do those on his own.
9:54 pm on January 27th, 2012
Should be can’t help AJ do the chores. He has to do those all on his own. He will be quick about his chores so the dogs can maximize their rest. He will try to rest as well; I will wake him up when it’s time for him to start preparing food and water for the dogs.

Grueling! ….But I know the Iditarod will be sooo much more grueling….gurgle!… Rebecca, I betcha I won’t be able to stay up with you all night long…snuffle!…In fact I am not even going to try. I know someone here has a lot to do tomorrow just because it is the weekend and that’s how weekends go around here….grunt!
10:11 pm on January 27th, 2012
Go Snowhook!
AJ is cool, calm, collected and quite the HAM!
Jasper! Congrats to you and your brother on your bumpity bumps.
10:11 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rebecca!…Who is going to wake you up so you can wake AJ up?…..snort!… How are you feeling anyways?…wuffle!
10:13 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rio: No need to try. What I expect of you, though is to dream of sneaking out of your yard and coming north to Alaska for a visit. 🙂
10:17 pm on January 27th, 2012
Rio: I will remain awake and will try to help out the race where I can. At the very least I will do jumping jacks to stay away and warm. My stomach has settled considerably. Last year AJ got the stomach flu the week that Iditarod started. He was one sick puppy. He tried to help handle at the vet check, but everytime he bent forward his stomach would churn and his world would spin. I told him it was better to hit before the race than during the race.
10:25 pm on January 27th, 2012
Go Snowhook!
AJ is cool, calm, collected and quite the HAM! I will have to check the standings when I wake up to go to work tomorrow. May all the dogs and mushers be safe on their journey. Maybe they will see the Northern Lights.
Jasper! Congrats to you and your brother on your bumpity bumps.
Barb and Maggie: The Bike Haven looks like a great bike store. I see a tandem and are those some fat-tires bikes? Very nice.

Oh. (red faced)
I already said that. Heh.
Happy birthday Mozart!

One Corgi snoring on Mama’s lap, one Corgi snoring on the next sofa cushion. Basil is sound asleep in the KatTree. Sheesh, guess Mama and I are the only ones here to see what is happening with AJ and Snowhook.
Dad is out in the Mud Room setting up a new CD player. Mama likes to listen to music while she pots around, and her old player bit the dust this afternoon. She said her favorite CD sounded like cats wailing – we thought it sounded GREAT!

Whassa matta – won’t Beau talk to you?

Good news from the mitten! Nice going, guys!
Dawson, Yes they have some fat tire bikes, a bike that is partly motorized for really old foggies, and I think 2 or 3 tandem bikes. They have over 100 bikes in inventory, which is good for a small neighborhood operation. Josh just took a 5 day seminar on bike service work and repairs, as that is a big part of their appeal. They also offer helmets, bike clothing and Oakley sunglasses. Also weekend rides all during the season.
Night all.

Herbals!….Beau and I have a non-verbal understanding…grunt!…He doesn’t touch my stuff and I can take anything I want…sniff!… Everything is mine, so there is no question of ownership. If he happens to squirrel away a little milk-bone, I will find a way to get it and eat it right before his eyes….snort!
11:33 pm on January 27th, 2012
Crap!… I wanted to stay up and
watchlisten to the Race Updates….grunt!….But as I suspected she is tired from the whole week of bull-arky and ready to go to bed…sniff!…Beau is fast asleep in her lap so she has to wake him up and get him upstairs and headed for his cold hard bed…heh!…I’m already one paw in my warm soft bed with my baseball toys in all the right places…wuffle!snuffle!cuddle!….Goodnight!….Go Snowhook!12:31 am on January 28th, 2012
What a great blog day but people are going to bed too early! I drove to Fairbanks through ice fog at -40 to meet a friend and go to the movies. She tries to see all the Oscar-nominated movies which is hard to go as some don’t make it to Fairbanks. We saw George Clooney’s The Descendants which was excellent. He makes good choices in movies. Over and out but I will check in later. While in town I help my friend with her computer techie questions or problems.

Hi y’all, we are a little late, but happy anniversary to Zoe and Dan. Our granny and grandpa just had their 60th.
Go Snowhook!! (is Rebecca a snow-hook now?)
Short on word, long on good wishes.
Macy out.
12:41 am on January 28th, 2012
I lay on my bed for a while and some of the stiffness went away. I just came back for a second to see where AJ was. WhooHooo he’s number 2. GO SNOWHOOK!
I am going to. To bed that is.
Night Rebecca and if I wake up in the middle of the night I will try to check in. Hope your tummy is better and all those muscles too.
Hugs,
Staff

Hi whoever is still awake. Mom and Pop and Kat just got home from the dog emergency hospital. Kat has been sick and puking all night. She is trying to crawl under the Plunderers’ quilt now. Please all wish he a recovery.
12:58 am on January 28th, 2012
Oh, Kat girl, what is wrong with you? I know that some of our kind (not me of course) can get into things not good for you. Please get better really quick, because we are all your aunties and uncles here and we care quite a bit for you.
12:58 am on January 28th, 2012
OH — Just going to bed here, but now worried about Kat. Please take good care of her and let us know how she is doing in the morning. Could it be something she ate? Wookie
1:19 am on January 28th, 2012
Aunt Macy and Uncle Wookie,
I’m wrung out but the injection they gave me at the ER is helping me a little. Mom is in shock yet. I have 3 pictures of my belly and the doc said she couldn’t find an obstruction. I guess that’s good. And my tests were all normal including my pancreas. Mom says I can’t run off-leash this weekend and I haven’t eaten since this morning. Meashka is even treating me gently believe it or not. I’m going to bed nowt and my pack will give you an update in the morning. Thank you for loving me.
1:33 am on January 28th, 2012
I spoke too early in an earlier post about my stomach feeling better. Ugh…I don’t feel so well, but it sounds like I’m in good company with Kat. I’m sending thoughts and prayers of healing and quick recovery to Kat and comfort of heart for her two-legged mama.
No race updates other than it seems they might be having technical difficulties with their computer system…a bug must be going around.
I’m going to try to get an hour of sleep in before heading to the layover.
1:50 am on January 28th, 2012
Oooo, best wishes to all those with a tummy ache. Hydrate & rest.
3:41 am on January 28th, 2012
Yikes!
A Kat emergency! Upset tummies! I hope those tummies feel better soon.
CHarris: Enjoy the big city. May your temperatures rise. Well, not yours, but the weather’s.
Hmmm. I think I’ll get back under the quilt.
4:13 am on January 28th, 2012
As of 11:11 AK time, AJ passed through the Morgan checkpoint, just 22 miles more and he’ll be at the Kershner checkpoint/layover where the team will rest before moving onto the second half of the race.
Earlier standing showing that he was down to 12 dogs from 16 at the first checkpoint appear to be incorrect—I blame the bug going around. The most recent commentary on the race website says AJ is in the lead while dropping two dogs. Race stats show him with 14 dogs.
My stomach is bothering me, but I’m hoping it will calm for handling tonight. Jeremy and I will leave shortly for the layover. I likely won’t be able to check in until I return home sometime tomorrow morning.
8:21 am on January 28th, 2012
Good morning! AJ and our team is going strong! GO SNOWHOOK!
Our Kat had a very restful night, courtesy pain pills and sheer exhaustion. She ate a couple of ice cubes and is staying under the quilt.
