Tuesday: The Dog Who Knew Too Much

“You’ll be in North Conway, New Hampshire?” Admin says.

“Noon, Maestro’s restaurant,” says Spence. “It’s a benefit for the North Conway Public Library (admission $20) and the Conway Area Humane Society. I’ll be discussing The Dog Who Knew Too Much for the first time – in public, that is.”

“So it’ll be a bit iffy?” Admin says. “I also saw you picked your six favorite books for LitStack.”

“The six I could remember,” Spence says. “Wonder what B. Stover will think of the choices.”

Belated Happy Birthday to Dawson.

Good morning, Chet, Spence, Admin and everyone else!

We loved reading Spencer’s answers to the question “What are your six favorite books”. Makes us think Mom needs to read all 6 of them. (whispering) She is pleading with us not to admit that she has not read even 1 of them.

Litstack loves Spencer Quinn; Chet loves LitStack; we love all of them.

We are so jealous that all of the book signings so far are up in New England, or NYC (which may as well be New England). We still have our paws crossed that Spencer makes it down our way because we would sure like to meet him.

Well, at some point I’m going to have to go over and look at Spencer’s list.

This is not the one we are going to. North Conway is over 4 hours from us. And you have to go through small roads all of which are not in good shape after Irene.

There was one couple who got married during the storm, the roads flooded and they were stuck with their guests on a newly formed island for 3 days.

    YIKES!

    More power to Riö’s friend!!

The Acting Troop loved meeting The Pack. The Pack loved drooling on them! Luckily, Ophelia, who weighs less than any one of The Pack is used to dogs. Her family raises Jack Russel Terriers. Hamlet thought the whole thing was a blast. Mattie wouldn’t let him stop petting her.

Melanie, we are so happy to read about your great visit with YSAS and company. Being used to Jack Russells is not necessarily preparation for a pack of Newfs though. :-)

That would be such a difficult question to answer. Whew! I’ve taught Pale Fire and The Day of the Locust. (Both excellent.) It’s been a very long time since I read Crime and Punishment so I have to put it on my after-retirement list along with The Underground Man, Master and Commander and Lincoln’s Sword which I have not read. Excellent explanations Spence.

    Good morning all.

OK, we will join Oley’s mom in the group that hasn’t read the books.
But we are impressed that 1. Bee has read some; and 2. Spence values her opinion.

Thundering here, and getting much cooler. Rain expected. Wonder how that will affect the cookout Barb is supposed to attend tomorrow.

The weather is miserable here–“hot and humid”–and they are even using those words on the Weather Channel. Running errands before it gets so bad that one can’t breathe.

Well, we used to think we were fairly well read….oh well.

Speaking of the newlyweds on an island, there have been lots of cut off communities and islands created by the storm. One group of folks were “stuck” at a luxury resort in Vermont with nothing but gourmet food to eat. Go ahead, try explaining to your boss that you won’t be at work for a week cuz you are trappped on a gourmet island in Vermont.

We are off to spend the day with AQ – he’s finally back from his well-deserved vacation, and we can’t wait to go get into the clay!

Nana says she has read only one of the books on the list – Crime & Punishment and that was a long time ago – in college. She probably won’t be able to get to the others anytime soon, what with the reading list for B’s class to get through first.

Four more days until the USPS truck arrives with The Dog Who…..

We are so glad to be in such esteemed company who have not read all of those books. Spencer sure makes each of them sound like must-reads, with his great comments on each. And we are equally impressed that Spencer values B.Stover’s opinion (don’t we all?).

Our weather is cloudy but not too hot. Mom is making plans for the Huge McDonnell Family Reunion/Hullapalooza (our cousin’s term) at our place on 9/24. Please do doggie dances for us to have bad weather that day. No way we can squeeze in all those people inside our house. We are excited that we will me meeting cousins we have never met!

I’m with you guys. It’s wonderful to be in such a highfalutin group of people! I recognize the names of some of them that books.

I took Dan to the dump and then we drove down the main street of the bigger town that we’re near. They have a post office! And a lumber store!

Looked at the river. People are lucky. The river took banks, fences, crops and one pool. All houses, barns, bridges are still up.

They are going to have to do something with our 1922 bridge next to the house. The river under cut one side. Have no idea what they are going to do. It was the best swimming hole in the area.

OleyHowlers: She said that the Newfs don’t jump like the JR terrors!
The acting troop woke up while we were gone and have departed for breakfast. Need those NYC bagels. Which we actually have in our country store.

They are going for a hike and taking the camera and video. Should be interesting.

Oley, thanks for correcting that. We were just thinking, “What, they want bad weather”?

    Good morning!

Yay, my surprise arrived yesterday! Thank you so much, TaG and Spence!

Mom is supposed to be canning some homemade BBQ sauce right now. She went to a farmers market and some lady talked her into buying a million tomatoes and now she has regrets. Although she makes jam and jelly, she has no idea how to make sauce.

    12:56 pm on September 3rd, 2011

Wolfie: I’ve also frozen tomatoes. Cut them up, put them in tupperware and freeze. (These are for soups and stews as they will lose firmness after freezing.) A million tomatoes….yum!

(Patsy here, whispering . . . I’ve taken over the computer while Melanie is out doing something with the nut acting crew. All you furry folks? There is nothing like tummies. Now Melanie does a good tummy at least twice a day. But this crew? Wow, tummies galore! Now you guys know I’ve got a problem with limping, but after all these tummies my endorphinnnthingys got going and I loped today! Unbelievable. Of course, Melanie was picking an apple from the tree for me too. Anyhoo, DEMAND YOUR TUMMIES! Over and out)

  20. OleyHowlers
    1:26 pm on September 3rd, 2011

Wolfie and B: We also freeze tomatoes whole. Just put them on a cookie sheet in the freezer until they freeze. Then you can wrap or bag. When you are ready to use them, run cold water on them and the skin will come off easily.

Patsy, you are really having a great time with your company! Thats what you deserve.

Just caught up on posts since Thursday night.

Wolfie, think the pricing for the decals, magnets and bumper stickers is perfect. Are these items we need to order from you or is Rebecca going to have them at the Musher Store? If we need to order from you, please post that so we can ORDER now!! Love getting C&B and snowhook stuff.

SiberH, glad you’re back and wow, you got that book early. I bet your mom will think it is worth the shipping you, um she, had to pay to get it early enough to read on the holiday weekend.

We had lots more to say, but have now forgotten it so later, dudes!

You can also put the tomatoes in boiling water for a couple of minutes. Then the skins come off easily. We do that, then quarter them and freeze. Use for soups, sauces, chili, etc. You can also add some onion and green pepper before you freeze.

    Thanks for the birthday greetings!

Happy Birthday to Wookie’s mom. You sure raised one smart doggie.

Yippee! Mucho tummies for Patsy and the rest of the Pack delivered by Hamlet and Co. no less!

Someone here is having another garage sale and I am not impressed as he is selling some CD’s that are not his! Ry Cooder for one. There will be consequences.

Oley Howlers: White wings was sent by surface mail so it could take a week or two to get across the border. You will probably be done reading TDW…you know…by the time it reaches you.

Spencer!… A favorite at LitStack!…woooo!… I really like that Sam Spokony guy. My friend replied to him out there. I would have too, but I am not allowed anywhere but here and Snowhook Kennels. She thought the “grilling” reference was funny…heh!

Busy!…Wow! Busy busy, busy!…snort! … We walked forever and ever early this morning and then someone make More Hamburger Than Cabbage Rolls, and then More Cabbage than Hamburger Rolls for the oldies next door and her mother, who actually like cabbage…gah!

Dedication!….SibeeerrrrrHHHHH!…..snort!…. You’ve got to tell us what the Dedication says!…wuffle!….Is it the same as it was for TFAT? Or is it different? Is it Bigger? Is it Better? Did he thank me personally for all that I do?…heh!heh!

SiberH: I hope you had a relaxing time away and welcome back.

The dedication in the ARC consists of two letters: TK. Could it be The Kats?

YSAS: Cake! Yes, please. Love the hat.

Rio: You walked this morning too? 5K!? I like cabbage.

  39. BearSpiritDog
    4:52 pm on September 3rd, 2011

We agree – that hat looks very good on YSAS.

Checking again with Amazon. They have NOT mailed our book! How can it reach here by the 7th if IT HASN’T EVEN BEEN MAILED YET?! You would think that folks pre-ordering would be on some kind of Priority List. Grrrrr!

Walked!….Yes, we walked forever!…wheeze!cough!….She says we are going to walk again tonight, tomorrow morning and tomorrow night…grunt!…What the HELL!?…Luckily, I get off the hook for the 5K bullshit!…grunt!

Dedication!…It surely has to be more than TK…gah!…What does that mean anyways?…snort!… I will not accept that it stands for “The Kats”….grumble!…No way! Not Chet! He would never!…heh!

Cabbage!…Dawson, if you like cabbage try the recipe in Dishlickers….snort!…Just add more of that nasty cabbage instead of hamburger…sniff!….Her mother even said she liked them. Someone almost fainted….yeep!

  41. Siber-H
    5:04 pm on September 3rd, 2011

Nope, It is not the Kats
It is not the same as TFAT

I will say no more. I can be a dog of few words. One of the two-leggeds at the dog park calls me the Gary Cooper of the dog park…I am really good at “yep” and “nope”.

However, Rio, I will take this opportunity to thank you for all that you do. I’m still impressed that you were able to write the auction rules that I understood and only had to read once.

    Greetings to All!

The Prof and I are back from Philly. Opened our mailbox to find such a thoughtful and great suprise from the Royals and Spencer. I can’t thank you enough!! Great trip, but we’ll need to go back as there was so much to do(and eat)with so little time!! The Prof took lots of pictures. I’ll try and post some. Caught up with the blog….Looks like there is lots of neat stuff going on!

Melanie: I hope Zoe is doing well. Glad to hear that she was smiling and eating english muffins. (I like a nice toasty brown muffin myself every now and then!) YSAS looks smokin’ hot in that hat. He looks a bit like Matt Damon in the picture (I LOOOOOVE Matt Damon).

    Dawson: Happy Belated Birthday!!!

Masquers: Hi! Thanks for the right-on weather forecast. Perfect weather in Philly!

Siber-H (my sweetie): Hope you enjoyed your trip up north!

Rebecca: Get ready for your close-up!!! :)

Rio: I still want to know.

Very exciting news article. I’m honored to be called a Plunderer! (I am, right?).

Glad to be back talking to you all! The Prof is back to school Tuesday, and I’m back at work on Wednesday. Tuesday we are going to cap off the holiday by going to see a documentary about the Beatles.

I wish I could do the Birthday cakes. Have to figure out if I can do them on my ancient photoshop. :( I just got that computer hooked back up to the WiFi, for some reason Mac OS X Lion not only took away my photoshop, but it kicked the connection for the other computer. Sniggle Fritz.

THEN, I was trying to get the stupid thing to sync iCalendars when it TOOK AWAY all of YSAS’s work account emails!

    Talk about heart stopping. CARPOLA!

So before I threw the computer out the window, I helped Zoë take the dogs for a walk. Came home and fixed it. Though I still can’t sync the calendars and the photoshop is missing.

    Melanie,
That doesn’t sound like lions. It sounds like goats! Are you sure you got the right program. Mac OS x Goat. Watch out.

    Dear Debbie,
Happy Birthday and go buy yourself a little fabric for your birthday. I bought myself a little fabric for Dawson’s birthday and it was just too much fun. Heh.

I love the picture of Clarkson in his hat. I agree with Dawson.
Cake here! heh heh heh that reminds me of when Rio used to yell Beer here!

I read Dostoyevsky years ago and don’t remember much. College you know…snicker…don’t tell B.
I really liked the Patrick O’Brian series although I don’t think I got much past the 12th one. I secretly prefer the Hornblower series until the last couple. They were duds. Mr.Staff reads Ross Macdonald, but I haven’t. Maybe I should put it on my list. I wonder if I can get it for 99cents from Amazon?
And, I am not reading Nabokov no matter how good Spence thinks he is.

Happy Birthday to Wookie’s mom! I wonder if Wookie allowed her to give him extra tummies as his birthday present to her.

Melanie: I’d like a slice of cake, just a small slice as we seem to have a lot of September birthdays.

Buddy & T.C.: I made the zipper pull especially for the auction. The dog tag was worn by one of our team members this year, but not of the two legged variety. I chose the colors of beads to represent the kennel in a way: AJ is the musher in black—all his gear is black or maybe, if he is feeling daring, gray, and I have my pink little hat—nothing about my gear matches.

Last night was a long night. On the way home from gathering firewood our trailer got a flat tire. We were only six miles from home. We must have been a sight to the trooper that stopped to check on us just after it happened: the seam on AJ’s pants split up the inside of his thigh while we were working and I was soaking and covered in mud from loading the wood. If my face was as dirty as AJ’s I’m sure the trooper got a good chuckle. We left the trailer and hurried home to collect a spare tire—to leave a trailer of firewood for too long is to risk returning to no firewood or no trailer of firewood.

Two cords of wood weighs a lot more than Princess Sam, so we weren’t surprised when our jack wasn’t up to the challenge. Night began to fall and car after car sped by, yet we were fortunate. A couple from Anchorage were camping in their motor home at the cemetary across the highway; they came to Willow for the weekend to make the headstone for her father’s grave. They had two of the nation with them and walked over to check on us. Between their jack and ours and with his help we found ourselves heading for home a couple hours later with a spare tire on the trailer.

Exhausted, we unloaded the wood and finally settled down to dinner around midnight. AJ woke early this morning, headed to town and bought some flowers to give to the couple that helped us last night. I went to bed feeling as if a cold was coming on and woke this morning not feeling well. AJ tucked the blankets tighter around me, told me to rest and said he would do firewood by himself today.

I have to say that it is an impressive sight to watch AJ bring the axe down from overhead and split wood with one swing log after log.

AJ is home at last and that means it is time for more splitting and stacking. Our VIP must not get cold in March—what kind of hostess would I be if I let that happen?

Natasha: It is a cold of the nose, so I think until I feel better I’m off any sort of femme fatale duty.

Detective!…. Tonight we happened to walk by a boy, nine or 10 years old, who was shoving a plank into a large shrub that had a hole cut out of it. It looked like a cave and it was right behind one of those old mailboxes that stand out on the side of the street….snort!… We were about 10 feet past him when he said, “I bet you are wondering what I am doing?”….grunt!…Well my friend turned around and said, “Well, yes we are wondering what you are doing?”….”I’m going to catch the guy who’s been stealing our mail with a hidden camera set up in this bush here.”….heh!… This intrigued my friend and so we walked back to the boy. She then offered up a suggestion, which I will not repeat because it involved a gnome, a hidden spy camera and a lever…grunt! …The boy brushed it off immediately and continued with his cave idea….bless!…I, by the way, know exactly who has been stealing that young fellers mail…Those Marauding Goats! …snort! …Bastards!

Well, mom started the silly BBQ sauce this morning, and had to put it away while she went to a birthday party. So now she is slaving over a hot stove waiting for the mixture to boil down. It is a tedious business, one not to be repeated. The idea of freezing tomatoes is sounding more and more appealing by the minute.

    Sheesh.

Rio: We just finished chopping and stacking the firewood and doing do chores. I feel better for the fresh air, but am exhausted. AJ was nice enough to let me rest today, but I plan on being by his side tomorrow morning when we leave for more firewood.

Wolfie: If your BBQ sauce turns out half as good as your toffee, you may have a winner.

Liz: I must have been channeling you last night. The gentleman that helped us with the flat tire commented that he liked my Australian accent. AJ said I may talk differently, but it’s definitely not Australian.
