Too Much Of A Good Thing? Always! (Revised) (Again)

“What is it about pecan pie?” Bernie says. Did he say that after last Thanksgiving? I have a vague memory of that. The truth is I have lots of vague memories, going all the way back to my puppyhood in the crack house. I also have lots of sharp memories, such as Peanut’s smell, for example. Peanut’s an elephant, now living in the great elephant sanctuary in Tennessee. She’s in To Fetch A Thief, or possibly Thereby Hangs A Tail.

Meanwhile Bernie steps on the scale. “Oh my God. That can’t be right.” He steps off, steps back on, gazes down at the display numbers. “How about we go for a run, big guy?”

See? Things have a way of working out for the best.

Please note: Technical changes at the blog may cause disruptions and weirdness today.

Note 2: PA and Spence are aware that there are problems, and have contacted Mike B. Everything will be sorted out. For example, once men walked on the moon.

Note 3: The comments from Chet the Dog below are from Mike B. Bernie says that me, the actual Chet, and he, meaning Bernie, are going for a long walk and will return when everything is normal.

How is that different from any other day?

    I love the NOTE!
I KNEW this blog could explain my life. I could rewrite it. . . "Technical changes in Melanie's life are causing the disruptions and weirdness."

Yup, that could work. If just have to remember what Chet says, "See? Things have a way of working out for the best."!

OK, Here is the deal as I see it. If we post a NEW comment then our posts will be in order like before. If we reply to a comment then the posts will be all up and down the blog and will not be in order.
Therefore I am going to always post NEW comments even when replying to old comments. Just like we used to do. Otherwise we are going to miss a lot of the comments.

    Dear Mike Baker:

Why is it in the name of progress things generally take a turn for the worse. I'm not sure if any of this new functionality is really contributing to the blog. We are a rather unique community, and the ability to respond to individual threads is not that important, but simply makes the blog chunkier and harder to follow. I've have had to change my log in name because my original name was "too long". Also, there is a real problem with accessing the blog. My mom tried to post a comment, and it told her that her user name was already in use. I don't know if that is part of the weirdness or if it is a bigger problem, but it is not good. Also, the new format is certainly not very intuitive in how to use it, and with a bunch of cats and dogs doing most of the posting, that makes it even more difficult. Assuming this is an experiment, I think you will quickly find that the consensus will be that everyone was very happy with the old system and would much rather go back to it. Good morning Wookie,
I am trying to adapt. I am glad that Alice Johnson is back in Minneapolis with Dawson. I think she would be rather testy about now too. I think the new way is pretty. It remains to be seen how it works. It took me a little time last night to figure it out.

Oh, and you have to click submit comment and then have to tell it you are not posting to Facebook too. Grump

Morning Staff and Wöökie and Everyone.
I have to say it was a bit of a shock to wake up and see all of this. I love that our avatars are still here.
Might take awhile to get used to the change.
Dan's doctor is going to call and Zoë is going to mention an ulcer. It suddenly occurred to me, that his symptoms sounded a lot like mine last year. Though with me they immediately thought of the liver and with Dan the heart.
Now if I'm correct, you can answer this post with stuff about Dan and then the next comment might be about him as reply or a new topic.
    This should be interesting.

Hi there Melanie, I like that you can choose to have the most recent post up at the top of the list. But then you have to go down to the posting area.

Melanie, I am glad you thought of that about Dan. Did it happen in the middle of the night? I had one of those moments when my mom, Maggie, was in the hospital in 2008. I called the nurses station at 4:30 a.m. and told them that I thought they were forgetting that she had acid reflux. Every time they moved her we had to tell the new people about it. Otherwise they were all worried about her throwing up, but they were not giving her the medicine that stopped it.

Hope they can figure it out soon.

    I'm trying the reply button!
Yes, it happened in the middle of the night. What is it about that time? Our bodies are sleeping and the brain goes "THAT'S IT!" Of course, the body is then wide awake with adrenaline.

Sounds like you Kat tribe had a wonderful time. Now if I have it straight, you will pack and winterize the house and go somewhere south where there is less snow? You know like 6 inches less?

  14. Staff
    9:44 am on November 29th, 2010

    That is right Melanie,
We go one gardening zone south. North Dakota, where we live, is zone 3. Minneapolis is mostly zone 4, although sometimes, with protection, you can grow zone 5 plants there.

Right now Minneapolis might have more snow.

  15. Staff
    9:47 am on November 29th, 2010

The problem with the reply button is that your reply stays with the post you are replying too. Thus is does not stay in order on the comment page. If, at night, you reply to something said in the morning, your reply will stay on the earlier part of the comment page and many people, dogs and cats will never know it was posted unless they scroll up and down every time they post.
So I am just going to post a new comment whenever I am replying to someone. At least until I figure out this new method.

Some of us (me) usually write back to more than one person and one subject and I am confused with the new way (I am not a computer sort of person to figure things out.) I don’t need a reply to each post to go back & forth. I am not explaining this very well, please Mike Baker, look at what Wookie has posted as he said it so well. Mike Baker, Admin, Spence, Chet, Bernie,

Please do not give us software that does not fit the way we use the blog. While software needs to be updated to meet current operating system and supporting software changes. it should not be updated for the sake of ‘new and improved.’

Mom has been in software, writing in assembler code with punch cards, since 1970 – maybe before you were born. One of the most important things she learned was to give the people using a system something that would help them in their use of that system.

We post sequentially, not in replies like Facebook. We need timestamps, not something that says 4 minutes ago and stays at that until it’s refreshed. Even dogs and kats can handle a timestamp.

  40. Chet The Dog
    12:05 pm on November 29th, 2010

B.Stover- it’s exactly the same thing as this + people can log in via Facebook, Twitter

and people can reply to people rahter than one huge long page- just please be patient, it’s just going to make this place better!

  41. Mollie (a black poodle)
    12:11 pm on November 29th, 2010

I agree with Mollypop and we are replying to people the way we do now. With a reply button it seems like it would take a long time to reply and read the reply to each person instead of the way it is now.

Wow!…The whole community is Poodled Up!… snort! snort!… Guys, I think change is inevitable. Like Staff said, she will continue to post a new comment every time and not use the “Reply” button….wheeze!… My friend says it looks a lot like the Facebook style of commenting…sniff!…Now I know Stover uses Facebook and so does Molly. 43. B.Stover
    12:12 pm on November 29th, 2010

    1. Do we have to keep going back to earlier posts to see replies?
    2. How do replies show up on the blog? Are we going to be sent to another page or will the reply be under the comment as it is on Facebook?
    3. If we don’t hit reply but rather post a comment, will the comments be shown in order as they are now?
    4. Is it impossible to post the time of the comment and/or reply? Do we have to have the “20 minutes ago” type of direction as it is on Facebook?

I agree with Mollypop’s comments above. I understand that we may need a system upgrade for volume. What I don’t understand is how this will help. It seems to make everything much more complex.

  44. Mollypop
    12:21 pm on November 29th, 2010

    Chet,

I understand that our 100+ comments would ‘explode’ a system that never was designed for that. So okay.

Now you do have options in configuring the software, so please use timestamps.

If the ‘Reply’ button must be there, we will still post sequentially since that is how we use this blog. We will miss any ‘Replies’ from Outsiders unless we opt for a comment notification.

I hate blogs where you have to reply to threads and then see what else is asked. Invariably I lose interest in about 2 tries. Also, I don’t want to have anything to do with the evil empire a.k.a. Facebook. Outsiders replying who aren’t following – why? Just join in – the water’s fine. There MUST be another way rather than threads, strands, and a general tangle.

Hello fellow plunderers! I don’t mind change…I’m an odd duck that actually likes changes. I do find myself wishing there was a thumbs up or thumbs down button. It’s one of my most favorite things about Facebook.

Accio Job! Mom is excited and nervous about tomorrow. She has a job interview with the State of Michigan for a job in human resources and employee relations. This is one of her very favorite things (thumbs up!) and coincides very nicely with her education and experience. I am asking for prayers, crossed paws, lit candles and maybe even a pug dance (??) for her. We are coming up on 2 years unemployed and it’s time for her to get back to work! She promised me that I will get to visit with some of my friends every day while she is gone to the busy place. It has been fun spending one-on-one time with my mom, but I’m ready for some time with my other BFFs.

Poodle kisses and licks to all…especially Chet.

Hmm. A Kats and Staff mind meld. I can see that.

Dan is home. He looks good. Now they are thinking it was heart failure and/or he hurt his ribs the last time he fell. Not any really facts behind either of those . .

So, Dan has to take his blood pressure twice a day. Weigh himself once a day. If he gains more than 3 pounds in one day, he sees a doctor. He takes a small thing of the med that gets rid of water. Take meds for an ulcer (just in case), and listen to the PT person and the doc. In one month he has another x-ray.

Hmm, seems to me just CYA stuff.

    But he looks good.

Wow! We missed yesterday and all hell broke loose.

First and most important thank you Chet, Bernie, SQ / PA for the kind words and dedication to little Sammie. He was a brave little guy, but couldn’t out fight the toxin. At least he has good company over the rainbow bridge and is running on those little legs now like crazy. Sometimes we just don’t win!

Hopefully, we will adjust to the new blog format. Mom is pretty techno stupid and does not like change, so we may need some help from you guys that are more savvy. We don’t think we will like the reply to comment idea. We like the long continual conversation where things are posted in sequence. Although Mom has a facebook page she never comments or replies. Just looks at family pictures. Hopefully, we will all figure this out so everyone is comfortable posting.

MinPin, don’t take Rio too seriously. He made Mom cry a time ot two, but she thinks she is just too sensitive to his kind of humor. And you are an excellent and creative poster! And remember, your M&D met SQ in person! Rio hasn’t gotten to do that!

A.Catty, do you live in NDakota or Montana? We can correct the map if necessary.

BStover, On my computer this morning the replies were under the comment they replied too. Also there was a thumbs up button to click if you liked the post. If you clicked the thumbs up it went to the top of the posts if you sorted that way.

You could sort it three ways. If you just left it the way it was it didn’t change from this way. But you could sort for newest at the top or you could sort for the ones with the most thumbs up. It was sort of cool.

I think we should give him a little leeway here and then after we see the changes we can tweek it the way we want it. Change is always difficult/exciting. I know that Bernie and Chet will listen to our wishes on this. (snicker) Or Rio will have to mount a new mission. I think B. will go on this one. It will be nice to have a two legged person driving. The problem has been a lack of communication. After learning that the volume on the blog is too large for the old version, I completely understood the reason for the need to change the comment system. I asked questions but Mike Baker told me that they were not worth answering.

IT people have to deal with people. For example, all of the people who regularly comment on this blog are being affected by these changes. Yet we are expected to accept the changes blindly. Some don’t know how to navigate the changes and their questions are important. IT people need to learn to communicate with the people they have to deal with.

    Gus and BooBear,
It was yesterday, not today. You should be able to find it by scrolling quickly down yesterdays post. Unless, of course, it was the day before yesterday.
Sorry to be such poor help.

    Gus and BooBear,
I just went looking for the pictures and they aren’t there right now. I suspect that getting them back is one of the things that Mike Baker is working on. He said earlier that he had 30,000 posts to bring back. We will have to give him a little time. Have you linked to Melanies blog? I bet they are up on it.

I know it is late in my world but thanks Rio for the voice of reason and good luck and good wishes to Mike!!! Yeah I think people should chill for a while and trust that Spencer, et al will work to make the blog better. I am sure they will keep at it so that no one leaves frustrated.

Jasper, I’ll be thinking of you first thing tomorrow morning and will be sending positive thoughts for the interview.

Hey y’all! I was one of those who couldn’t get on, so it was very frustrating watching everyone else post when we couldn’t! I’m hoping this one will go through.

Mom was trying to thank Chet, Bernie and PA/SQ for their dedication of the post to Buford the other day. And thanks to everyone else for their support during this past week.

As for me, I keep looking for Buford, especially when it’s time to go out for our walks. I guess it’ll just take awhile to get used to him being gone.

Gus and Boobear: We were so sorry to hear about Sammie. It doesn’t matter how long Sammie was with you — it’s hard to lose a dog that has managed to wiggle its way into your heart!

    HI there Kirby T Penworthy,
You were sure up late last night. Or maybe I mean early. Glad you were able to get online finally. Just to mention, Sammy was a foster kitten. But I know all you pups were rooting for him all the same. We were too.

We are thankful for Mike Baker too. Hope he is OK after yesterday. It was quite a day. Good luck today Mike.
