Ha ! First!
11:02 am on August 7th, 2014
Good morning, everyone! Welcome friends B&T and O&O. Sounds like an SRO crowd in San Diego last night and NO tomatoes 🙂
Break a leg and knock ’em dead in Pasadena tonight.
Have a thrilling Thursday.
11:07 am on August 7th, 2014
Good morning T & G. I am getting ready to take off for Lake Geneva. Thank Dog a few tomatoes are ready, because everyone has been asking about them.
The posted review was good, and actually hit on several points made in the live webcast.
Ummm, Admin, you read the names of the new FOC a little too quickly. That is not Betsy and Tracy, but rather Betsy and Tacy, taken from the Maude Hart Lovelace books written in the 40′ and still popular today. Maggie has a younger half sister (who looks just like her) named Tacy.
Will not be posting till Sunday late in the day, so hope everyone has a great next few days.
Before we go, did anyone hear from the Howlers?
11:08 am on August 7th, 2014
Good article/interview.
I’m trying to read Paw slowly but I’m already on chapter chapter 16. The hardcover copy is arriving on Saturday according to Amazon.
Good morning all.

Boy, OFA certainly is on a whirlwind tour. He did say that while he enjoys meeting his readers and doing signings, the travel part is rough.
Diane – never fear that Chet and Bernie will suffer the loss if OFA does other books. He has already written two other youth series (as Peter Abrahams) and never missed a beat as Spencer Quinn. We especially liked his first series including “Down the Rabbit Hole”. There were 4 books in that series.
The first book of this new series is already written – it sounds like it is going to be fun.
11:11 am on August 7th, 2014
Barb – have a wonderful time. And congrats on your new, slim self.
11:43 am on August 7th, 2014
T & G’s mama, Slimmer, but definitely not slim! We loved the Ingrid books, were so disappointed when he didn’t continue them – something about a contractual problem.
Now Barb is off for the Vacay. Later taters, as ML would say!
12:05 pm on August 7th, 2014
B&M enjoy your vacation, we’ll miss you.
T&G how could you keep a secret like that?
12:08 pm on August 7th, 2014
Just heard from OH’s mom. She is on vaca this week. She did tell us last week she would be “disconnected”. Don’t knowmisnshe is just busy having fun outside or off somewhere, but all is fine.
12:09 pm on August 7th, 2014
How about that makeup word? “Don’t know if she” is what it should have said.
12:32 pm on August 7th, 2014
Vromans!…Nana and Maskers will be at the book signing tonight…snort!snort!…I hope they post a foto or two..snorkel!…Who thinks Nana remembered her Plunderer Passport and stamp? Not me…heh!
12:37 pm on August 7th, 2014
Standees!…Sounds like Spencer is packing them in at these gigs…snort!…I hope Nana gets there early and grabs a seat right in front…chuffle!
Question!…For all of youse who have gone to one of these book signings. Does Spencer show up early and hang out in the bookstore before he starts the formal talking part?…wheeze!
12:52 pm on August 7th, 2014
Rio, When Spence was here, he did show up early but kept himself pretty busy setting up the display and talking business with the employees. Mom did introduce herself to him before he began his talk. When Spence was finished with his talk, he was kept busy with people having him sign the book and wanting to tell him about their dogs. Mom didn’t need to tell him anything about me. He reads the blog and he must be an expert on pugs and Sibers by now. Thanks for your offer about the Tattered Cover Book Store. I am fine. Strange as it my sound, I am not a dog who has to have every book autographed.
I recently read an aviation fiction thriller. The Tattered Cover Bookstore was mentioned several times in it.
1:01 pm on August 7th, 2014
SiberH!…gasp!…You do not have to have every book pawtographed? How strange.
Aviation!…Thriller! Was it set in Colorado by chance?…heh!heh!
1:03 pm on August 7th, 2014
SiberH!…My friend is pretty shy….sniff!…She might choke and not introduce herself at all to Spencer…grunt!…I can just see her doing that…wimp!
1:05 pm on August 7th, 2014
BooBear, Thanks for the information about my Fellow Sibers. I hope they are also on vacation and having fun.
Spence said that he wrote books while on the plane.
There is a grocery store here in town that is letting people bring in small dogs. I approve, but if I walked in with mom they would call the cops…discrimination.
1:12 pm on August 7th, 2014
Rio, I do not want your friend to be shy. Spence doesn’t bite.
Mom wishes she were there to help out. Mom can be quiet, but she is not shy…just like me.
Yes, the aviation thriller was set in Denver. The hero of the book, the pilot, was a book collector, and he met his wife at that bookstore. She worked there. The fact that it took place in Colorado was one reason mom chose to read it.
1:23 pm on August 7th, 2014
Title!…What is the title of that Aviation Thriller?…sniff!
1:24 pm on August 7th, 2014
Also!…SiberH, have you started reading Pressure Drop yet?…snort!…I just finished chapter 4 and it is most excellant!…wheeze!
1:43 pm on August 7th, 2014
Rio, The title of the aviation thriller is Final Authority. I liked it, but it is not the best aviation thriller I have read. I would give it 4 stars on Amazon. It is only $2.99 so it is worth the price. My only gripe with the book was it spent too much time talking about the politics of the airlines and not enough time on the airplanes.
If anyone wants to read an aviation thriller that grabs you by the seat of the pants, turns you upside down several times, and doesn’t let go until the end of the book, I can recommend one. It is, “Code Black”, but it is more expensive…$8.49.
I have not started Pressure Drop yet. I am glad you like it. We both knew ahead of time it would be most excellent.
1:47 pm on August 7th, 2014
Rio, when SQ was in Houston, he wasn’t talking with customers ahead of time, but Mom had a front row seat and he saw her Chet the Dog badge and acknowledged her with a smile. Mom isn’t real out-going so she didn’t try to talk too much but had her pic taken. This year, I’m not sure if Dad is going along. He did the last time. Now he can’t take pictures anymore, so maybe Mom can get a store employee to take a pic. She will definitely take her passport and stamp to get his and Chet’s pawtograph. Tell your friend to be sure and wear her badge. Mom’s is laminated and hangs on a lanyard.
1:48 pm on August 7th, 2014
The hardcover copy of Paw arrived! The detail of the Capitol on the cover is beautiful. I wonder how it was done. The back inside flap says it’s a photograph. Lovely.
1:52 pm on August 7th, 2014
Rio, Mom didn’t have a badge because mom, being mom, decided we can live just fine without a printer. A badge is a good idea but so is introducing yourself.
The cover of Paw and Order is beautiful!
1:54 pm on August 7th, 2014
Moose!…Get this, my friend told me someone just walked by her office and was over-heard saying, “I am sooo hungry I could eat a moose.”…snort!…My friend was tempted to go tell that person she knows someone who has eaten a moose and doesn’t recommend it…heh!heh!
1:56 pm on August 7th, 2014
Badge!…Oh boy, oh boy! I almost forgot about the Badge…snort!snort!…My printer is not working right, of course. It is brand new and last weekend someone could not get it to print a simple text document…grump!
2:01 pm on August 7th, 2014
I spent the last hour and a half talking with a young man who is painting my door and front window frame. He’s really smart but didn’t want to go to college. I tried to convince him that he should be a teacher…so he should go to college. He loves the Dune series by Frank Herbert (and the prequels by his son based on mss Herbert wrote but never puslished). He said that the new movies Lucy and Transference have ideas taken from Dune. My physics prof friend likes Dune also so I may start reading the series. (It’s been a while since I talked to a college-aged person. It was fun!)
2:25 pm on August 7th, 2014
But B, what do you think of Chet’s coloring on the back of the cover?
Also, I only read the first book in the Dune series, but as I recall, it was pretty terrific.
2:41 pm on August 7th, 2014
Wookie and Teddy’s Dad: Well….that’s not how I picture Chet. (Actually, and I should be whispering this, I don’t really like the white ear on the cover. Sorry guys.) I have the 40th Anniversary Edition of Dune (which I’ve never read) and it states, “Science Fiction’s Supreme Masterpiece.”
2:50 pm on August 7th, 2014
B., mom doesn’t like the white ear either. In her mind the white ear that Chet has is on the front inside of the ear only.
2:55 pm on August 7th, 2014
BooBear: That’s the way I’ve always pictured the white ear also.
3:16 pm on August 7th, 2014
SiberH!…Is the author of Code Black Philip S. Donlay?…snort!
3:18 pm on August 7th, 2014
Rio, YES!!!
3:25 pm on August 7th, 2014
WE agree with the ear comments. Now lunch is done and out to the boat for a cruise 🙂
3:26 pm on August 7th, 2014
A belated Good Morning to everyone–I heard from Nana this a.m. (and will try to get up to the LA area this afternoon for that signing–if not, tomorrow night in Orange) and when I asked she said she had been to 2 signings and no early contact with SQ on those occasions. Now what’s this about badges and passports?
I expect to just be sitting there like a lump in any case…
Chet’s ears do not bother me. He is a handsome dude with ears of any kind.
4:03 pm on August 7th, 2014
Diane!…Has Nana done any surfing yet?…chuffle!
4:08 pm on August 7th, 2014
Diane – a couple of years ago when the very first Plunder gatherings were being planned, someone (we think it was Siber or Rio) came up with the idea of having passports identifying blog members as residents of Stovernia, ruled by our most excellent Empress Bee Stover. Staff and Dawson’s brother created a wonderful little genuine-looking passport for each of us to carry when we know we will be meeting up with each other. Most of us have stamps or logos that we put in each other’s passports, along with the date of the meeting.
And someone else (we think it was Staff) created Chet the Dog Blog identification badges, kind of like press passes. Maybe the people in charge of such things could help you get access to said goodies, so you can join in the fun of all that.
4:38 pm on August 7th, 2014
Wowser, we be OTR (on the river)…see

4:41 pm on August 7th, 2014
Diane, I do indeed do the Chet the Dog ID badges. I need to have a decent picture of the badgee and I need to have it on a day when I am not leaving in 5 minutes to go to Quilt Club. However I would be happy to make a badge for you. Here is an example of one of the badges…

You have to download it and print it out yourself.

Heh. I have no dead tree copies of any of the C&B books. Also, since I’m pretty sure I’ll never make a book signing (because nobody ever comes to beautiful and hysterical Erie, PA), I guess I’m not too sad I missed passports and things, since I came to the party late. And also, Dune…you know…I must be an SF heretic, because I never got into the Dune series at all. I think the problem is that the library once sent me the second book in the series, which I started reading and gave up on by about page 10, because it was totally incomprehensible. I am assured that, had I started at the beginning (I blame the library, who often sends series out of order), I would have liked it a lot better. Still, love Asimov, Heinlein, and of course Anne McCaffrey and lots of others.
Now if I ever did get the opportunity to meet OFA, I’m pretty sure I’d say hi, then not much else. Although, I did meet Douglas Adams once, which was an opportunity not to have been missed. …
5:42 pm on August 7th, 2014
Ooooo – Anne McCaffrey….Pern, Crystal Singers, oh my. We would love to meet her!
5:51 pm on August 7th, 2014
Unfortunately, we won’t be able to meet her until the hereafter, because she went Between in November of 2011, at the ripe old age of 85. Still, I agree: I would have loved to meet her, too. I want a fire-lizard. And also a dragon, except I’d probably get us lost. But a guide fire-lizard would rock. Well, apart from the whole flighty and unpredictable nature thing.
6:03 pm on August 7th, 2014
I read all the Anne McCaffrey books 25+ years ago and teens loved the Pern series way back when.
6:29 pm on August 7th, 2014
We just got back from a 3 hour cruise…no Guilligan or the Skipper but still fun.
6:48 pm on August 7th, 2014
We first went to Pern about 15 years ago. The end of the first book was actually physically painful as we couldn’t get to a bookstore for days to get the next book. Buddy – thanks for that info. We didn’t know she had gone Between. We are usually woefully unaware of the status of people we admire. But we bet she was an incredible conversationalist.
I too wanted a Fire Lizard. But settled for Corgis, who are almost as unpredictable.
And my Best Friend and I used to wish for a Radient Bath to relieve all aches and pains. It made me smile to remember that.

The DDD found one of those on line tests to see what book character your life is like. He wouldn’t do it but adopted son is Scout in Harper Lee’s TKAM. Mom is a hobbit from The Lord trilogy. Go figure. Hey, move over CHobbit.
8:13 pm on August 7th, 2014
HOH – your yachting afternoon sounds lovely. We hope you all got lots and lots of leftover barbequed goodies.
That on-line literary character test sounds like fun. We would no doubt be fairy tail princesses.
8:14 pm on August 7th, 2014
Oh gosh…I think I read Dragonflight the first time in 1986 and was hooked forever after. While it’s probably true that there are some continuity holes big enough to fly a dragon through, I mean, how could there not be?, I love all of Anne’s worlds, and think it’s really interesting how for instance Pern has evolved from Dragonflight through the succeeding books. Dragon flight has a darker feel to it somehow, but it starts in dark times. Tipper’s Ma, have you read any of the most recent Pern books written in collaboration with son Todd? They explore earlier Falls, like second and third pass. And watch-where. I’ve often said that getting matched with a guide dog is probably as close as we’ll ever get to Impression.
Anyway, so many books, so little time…..
8:31 pm on August 7th, 2014
Pern!…Somehow we here missed all that growing up…sniff!…My friend loved “Dragon Lance” and of course The Lord of the Rings Trilodgy and the Hobbit…snort!
8:43 pm on August 7th, 2014
Young!…She went through a Trixie Belden faze too…heh!heh!…Still has the books…snorkel!
9:14 pm on August 7th, 2014
Our mom never read Trixie Belden but she did devour Nancy Drew books and biographies until she was 13ish. Then she moved on to du Maurier, Christie and Mary Stewart. Now she just reads, Reads, READS!
9:42 pm on August 7th, 2014
Rock and mom are going to the Creative Discovery Museum tomorrow and doing lunch at a diner Rock remembers from his trip 3 years ago. At the diner they have the desserts in a revolving case. Horrible on the calories, fun on the eyes.
Tired from the sun and water and entertaining so going nighty night early. Hope OFA “wows” ’em in Pasadena tonight 🙂
9:55 pm on August 7th, 2014
Buddy – no we weren’t aware of the next books of Pern. I will look into them.
I loved how at the beginning of the books, the settings are distinctly medieval and only very late does the reader realize that this is actually far ahead in the future and humans have had to start again.
I need to go dig those books out and visit Pern again.
10:03 pm on August 7th, 2014
Rio: I have the Trixie Belden books, too. Last year I re-read some of them.
10:11 pm on August 7th, 2014
Friend: Channel your inner evil pug when you meet OFA. Don’t be shy. As Diane says—-courage!
Hoose mead stew! Our Lady’s stomach lurched a little today when Rio mentioned being so hungry someone could eat a moose.
10:22 pm on August 7th, 2014
FINALLY, someone turned on the computer for me. The service around here is completely sub-par. Re: Chet’s white ear. It has been with us since TFAT, so there’s that.
I make a motion that the Corgis exchange their vowels to be Tipper and Gully.
Our girl Niki is coming up from Austin tonight with her new beau, so we are all waiting up in our day wear instead of our usual-by-now night wear. It is a subtle difference, but I hope they appreciate the effort.
Mom’s insurance says no more camp, day, night or otherwise, so she should be getting herself together soon.

10:38 pm on August 7th, 2014
Lurker!…Now we here love you even more!…heh!heh!…Trixie Belden indeed!…WOOOOO!
Waiting!… I am waiting to hear from Nana and Maskers. They are in the presence of The Master tonight. I sure hope they can share a story or a photo…wheeze!…May be too much to ask on a big night like tonight….heh!
11:31 pm on August 7th, 2014
Trixie Beldon??? Who is she? Now Nancy Drew I can understand and all those Hardy boys also….snicker
I am also a lover of all things Pern. My favorite one is DragonSong. I think that is the name. It is the one where the young girl from the fishing village finds and impresses a whole bunch of fire lizards.
11:37 pm on August 7th, 2014
Pern!…Will haunt me now…gah!…Fire Lizards!…yeeep!
1:30 am on August 8th, 2014
Rio: We wonder if it is your inclination to burping, or perhaps farting that has your friend worrit. It’s a toss up in our opinion. We would like to go on the record that we’d be happy to have you join us anywhere. Snort!
Our Lady took the Giant out for an early birthday dinner tonight. She said she had the best looking date in the whole place. She wouldn’t lie about such things.
Nighty noodles.

Yea Staff! Go get it quick like a min-pin before the post office closes.
Our girl did not get into town until very late last night so we gave up and went to bed. She should be here, here, here, soon, soon, soon to see us, us, us.
Mom just finished signing up for the *cough* senior education classes at the community college. Some Texas history, espanyol, knitting, drawing, and Jewish roots of Christianity.
3:37 pm on August 8th, 2014
T and G and Staff–thank you for the additional information.
