Tonight: San Diego
“How was the event at the Poisoned Pen?” Admin says.
“No one threw anything,” says Spence.
“That’s our metric. Where are you tonight?”
“Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego.”
“How’s the pop quiz going?”
“Very sharp crowds. May have to toughen the questions.”
Tonight, 7PM: Spencer Quinn at Mysterious Galaxy, 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego.
– Welcome new friend Skippy.

Oh phooey!
I just remembered that someone said last night’s event was going to be live streamed…and I missed it. Sigh! Oh well, it was another successful talk and signing. Don’t make the pop quiz questions harder. Get more prizes!
Hi Skippy!
10:31 am on August 6th, 2014
Good morning, Dawson and everyone! Skippy is quite a looker. Speaking of looking, looks like Dawson is right about last night being successful, nothing thrown except questions. Hey, look at OFA going casual in a T-shirt instead of a button down…WOW!
Have a west coast Wednesday š
10:37 am on August 6th, 2014
Live!…Youse guys can still watch Spencer talk at the Poisoned Pen…sniff!…Just go to the website and they have archived events…snort!
10:38 am on August 6th, 2014
I’m first?
I see from last night’s post that I may still be able to see Spencer’s talk at the Poison Pen. What a fine bookstore! Thanks Rio for that info.
ALR: What an excellent question you asked. It was Staff who told me about the series and gave me my first copy of Dog on It to read on a plane ride home.
DianeC: I love living by the water, if only for a few weeks. Surrounded by water and yet we are in a drought. It has not rained at all since I’ve been here and there is no rain in the foreseeable forecasts. All the grass is brown and crunchy.
I liked your joke that included the Canadians. I am a dual citizen, so I am not as polite as some Canadians.
I watched the Canadian and Ghanian Woman’s World Cup soccer game last night. Wow! Ghana won 1 – 0.

Casual!…I may have to re-think my formal attire…snuffle!

Dawson, You can go to the Poisoned Pen website and watch the webcast. I did and stayed up really late because of it. Very interesting information about future Chet plans. Heh heh heh.

I also was taken in by a Barnes & Noble display on DOI, which led to the purchase decision, and as they say, the rest is history. The book also came out not that long after The Art of Racing in the Rain, which while not a mystery, is certainly equally oriented to dog lovers, and which we liked a lot. However, the most significant aspect of DOI (apart from finding and joining the blog) is the tradition that it has started in our household of me reading books out loud at night before we go to bed, initially to Debbie and Wookie and now to Debbie and Teddy. I had started DOI and was laughing so loudly that Debbie asked me what was so funny, and in response I just started reading out loud and for that too, as they say, the rest is history. Among the books that have been read out loud over the years are all of the Chet & Bernie sequels, many of the David Rosenfelt book (both the Andy Carpenter series and his stand alones), the entirety of the Donna Ball Rain Stockton series (with Cisco the golden retriever), the entirety of the Laura Levine series, and various books by Carolyn Hart, Margaret Maron, Joanna Fluke, Laurie King, Beverly Cleverly, Charles Todd and Jacqueline Winspeare, just to mention a few.

So excited. Just got Paw from Audible, and also A Tail Of Vengeance. I wonder if this is the story about the girl they didn’t get to in time to save?
Been meaning to check in with y’all for ages. Took a train trip to a ham radio convention in CT a couple weekends ago. Got to tour the Mark Twain house, and Leno hung out with his pal Jackson. There was a third guide dog there, we saw him once, and he wasn’t nearly as nicely behaved as Leno and Jackson were.
Our next adventure: a blinded vets convention in Reno. No, I’m not a blinded vet. And after that, probably around February, we’re getting a GSD puppy. I’m going to try my hand at training my next guide dog from scratch. Instead of going to guide dog school. If I’m totally inept at that, it will be all right, but I’d much rather be successful š
Speaking of adventures, Jasper the cat had one, but he’s not telling. He disappeared for five days, but he’s back and seems to be happy to be back.
Hope all of y’all are as tip top as ever.

Also, Yay!!!!! I finally figured out how to play these events…I never could find the play button before, but I did just now. Good times!
12:18 pm on August 6th, 2014
Rio–forgot about the quiz part–I think you’re right.
12:28 pm on August 6th, 2014
Dawson–I made a point of including the Canadian part (quite valid) so I’m glad you liked it. Sorry that your grass is brown and crunchy–drought really bites. I can always relate when Bernie starts to go off on the aquifer. Also, no offense to Canada, but I’m glad Ghana won. Always glad when countries from which we hear relatively little have a triumph (with certain obvious exceptions, of course, such as acts of unprovoked aggression).
Everyone–A belated Good Morning and Happy Wednesday. I think SQ mentioned one of the MANY rejected title suggestions I sent in (although it was so obvious I probably wasn’t the only one).
A strange mystery–My local library reported that someone checked out TDWKTM and cut two pages out (with what looks like an Exacto knife) before returning it. Hard to imagine why a C and B reader would vandalize a book like that…
12:28 pm on August 6th, 2014
Buddy!…I have a helluva time getting the Events to play…snort!…Finally it happens, but I do not really know why or how…grunt!
12:30 pm on August 6th, 2014
Cutting!….I wonder which two pages were cut out of that book. Funny how it is “2” pages and not 3…heh!heh!
12:36 pm on August 6th, 2014
The webcast was fun and interesting. I wish we could have heard the questions from the audience.
The British pronounce “St. John” “sind gin.” (The way the Brits pronounce “English” is always fun.)
Wookie and Teddy’s Dad: In case you hadn’t heard, a new Charles Todd novel, An Unwilling Accomplice,” is coming out August 12.
Good afternoon all.
12:37 pm on August 6th, 2014
Wookie’s and Teddy’s Dad–I wish more people would read aloud–it’s a wonderful practice in many ways (I used to belong to a group that just brought stuff to read aloud to one another). I do think some authors (like those you mention) are better suited to being reading aloud than others (e.g. would avoid the oeuvre of Tim Dorsey for anything but solitary reading).
Buddy and Leno–Sheesh, you’ve been busy. Have we seen a picture of the admirably-behaved Leno?
HOH–those are the only kind of Wednesdays I have, due to geographical considerations. Have a great day yourself–I always think dogs lying around really cuts down on the area that has to be cleaned…and yours blend with the upholstery–clever!
1:01 pm on August 6th, 2014
Diane, hmm…I think there’s a picture of Leno around here somewhere. Probably also of our dearly departed Chet. That’s the other Chet. I’ll have to find one and post it. I’ll go through my phone. Sometime. Unless I forget.
1:13 pm on August 6th, 2014
Mom was sorta sick (stomach bug) last night so we did not get to watch the live streaming. We also did not start Paw and Order yet for the same reason. We will do both when mom is less glassy- eyed. Mom is better today but still not tip-top.
We like to read a Chet and Bernie book all at once, if possible.
Dawson, I did not know there was a drought going on where you live. We get no news from Canada. I would have cheered for the Canadian soccer team. You know I would have.
Buddy and Leno, Great to hear from you.
1:31 pm on August 6th, 2014
Buddy!…I just read the latest thing you wrote on your blog back on April 8th…snort!…Good stuff. All of those reasons are why I only post here and no where else. There was that one Iditarod I posted on their site during the race….grunt!… But probably never will again. I tried posting on the Rockies website during games, but too many nasties out there dissing all the players and everything actually…heh!…Not my cuppa beer at all…sniff!…So I stay in my yard and play on Chet’s blog…snort!
1:49 pm on August 6th, 2014
Pasadena!…Hey tomorrow night Spence will be in Pasadena and Maskers will hopefully get to meet and greet him…snort!
2:08 pm on August 6th, 2014
Working working working
Busy busy busy
Thank goodness for cold cut sandwiches and frozen pizzas.
Back to work….
2:35 pm on August 6th, 2014
I am still loving the the answers to my how did you meet Chet question! Wookie and Teddy’s Dad…..I read some of the same books you do and I made note of a few authors you mentioned for the future, so thanks! Just read the first of the Maizy Dobbs series by Jaqueline Winspear and do want to read the whole series. Have you ever read the Louise Penny Inspector Gamache series? They are great and would make good read alouds I think. As always…..always start at the beginning. Louise Penny builds her charactors and story line very well so it is worth it for sure.
Rio, truly Angels Work to have come upon Chet and Bernie, and indeed life changing with this here blog family.
3:13 pm on August 6th, 2014
ALR!…Guess who, after faithfully posting on this here blog for 4 plus years, finally gets to meet the Charming Mr. Abrahams?…snort!…Me!Me!Me!…heh!
3:27 pm on August 6th, 2014
Oh, Rio, you are loved by all ya meet. We have all come to the Chet and Bernie blog by angels who want us special folks to be here š Still wish our 8 Cousins book had arrivesd š PLEASE! SOON! NOW! Ok. Pretty soon will do.
3:49 pm on August 6th, 2014
ALR — Debbie has read most of the Louise Penny series, and after some prodding, I have started them as well. I have now read the first three and am definitely hooked, although it will take a while (with all the other reading I am doing) to get caught up to her. When I do, we may add the remaining books to our read out loud list, although I am not sure if they will work for that. Another author that I have just discovered and really like a lot is Julia Spencer-Fleming, who has written the Clare Ferguson/Russ Van Alstyne series (about 7 or 8 books now). I have now read the first three, which includes the first — In the Bleak Midwinter — which won the Agatha as best first novel several years ago. Another author who I really like is Alafair Burke (it also shows the genes can matter in writing — she is the daughter of James Lee Burke) and I have read virtually everything she has written and just finished her latest book, with the somewhat strange title of “All Day and a Night” (which in the book makes perfect sense because it is the prison jargon for a life sentence without possibility of parole).
Rio — while waiting for Paw and Order, I know that you and your friend will greatly enjoy Pressure Drop a lot.
3:55 pm on August 6th, 2014
ALR — one correction to my earlier post — it is Barbara Cleverly, not Beverly Cleverly (and the series is the Joe Sandilands series). Also, the Maisie Dodds series is absolutely terrific — with each book getting better and better. And they do read out loud excellently. If you check the website for Poisoned Pen, you will see that Jacqueline Winspear was actually there just a few days prior to Spence, talking about her new book (which is a stand alone and not in the Maise Dobbs series).
3:58 pm on August 6th, 2014
Pressure!…My friend sent me a text on my little go-phone. It said she actually took a lunch break and started reading Pressure Drop…snort!…She said it was very hard to put down and if it stays not-so-busy this afternoon she is going to read at her desk… chorkel!
5:31 pm on August 6th, 2014
I just watched the live stream. What fun! He does reveal some of the action in the book, so only watch if you can live with that. Me? I think it adds to the fun.
7:11 pm on August 6th, 2014
Rio, lucky you! I hear The Tattered Cover is somewhat like Powell’s Books near where I live. If Mr. Abrahams OR Spencer Quinn came anywhere close I would be there. Hope you win a prize!
plunderers have added to my reading list today, it just goes on and on like all good things should. Glad to hear you are there in Three Pines with Inspector Gamache, Wookie and Teddy’s Dad. How the Light Gets In was remarkable and her next book comes out soon, too, I hear.
8:16 pm on August 6th, 2014
MIA!…What happened to our Howlers?…sniff!…I know they went on vacation, but I do not remember where they went..grunt!
8:21 pm on August 6th, 2014
ALR!…I am told it is quite a distance for me and my friend to get to the Tattered…snort!…She is having the old Subaru tuned up and the oil changed before we go so we will hopefully make it all that way without being stranded on the highway…grunt!…Oh and because of so much road construction on I-25 we are going to have to take a Toll highway all the way around the whole state practically to get there…grump!….She says we would only do this for the Charming Mr. Abrahams. No one else. Nope. Not ever…wheeze!…I have a feeling this little jaunt is going to deplete my treatie fund drastically…wheeze!gurgle!
8:30 pm on August 6th, 2014
Rio, despite the grousing, you will love an evening with TM/OFA.
8:34 pm on August 6th, 2014
We hope OFA has a good time in the so cal before going to the civilized northern parts of the west coast. Wish mom could be there, too.
8:34 pm on August 6th, 2014
I’ve seen that toll road advertised during the Rockies games. It will be a vast improvement over I-25.
I-25 is also under construction in Albuquerque. It is a mess.
Where are my fellow Sibers?
8:47 pm on August 6th, 2014
Hey everyone. Busy day here, getting ready to head out tomorrow morning for our great family get together. Brother and SIL and their two boys, plus sister and her husband all will be arriving for lunch at Kelly’s home on Lake Geneva. We will be together till Sunday.
Today I went to B & N and bought PAO, which will go with me on the trip. We do lots of talking, laughing, eating, drinking fine wines, walking, boating, and in our down time, some quality reading.
I try to pace myself and just read a chapter at a time, but it is really hard to do, as Siber’s mom will tell you.
Spencer said in that webcast that he is doing another young reader’s book or series with a dog as narrator. I think it will be coming out next summer. He also said the next C&B book will find them back in the valley.
Hope all have a nice night. I am glad Rio’s friend is finally going to get to meet TM/OFA in person.
Will check in tomorrow morning before taking off.
8:57 pm on August 6th, 2014

10:29 pm on August 6th, 2014
Whew – we are glad OFA mentioned the new youth oriented book series. He told Mama all about it when he came to the show, but said it was top secret til announced. So we will now consider it announced. Right?
Rio – your Friend is going to have a wonderful time. And we bet OFA is looking forward to meeting your irascible self too.
10:30 pm on August 6th, 2014
Y’all are not very prolific this evening. I just watched the video and learned interesting things about what I’m gonna find in Paw. Also read Tail Of Vengeance, which I thought might be about the girl that Chet and Bernie didn’t get to in time to save, but was rather about another often-heard story. Ooh, and it was a good one, too, if you haven’t read it. Of course you have. What a silly thing to say. Anyway…LOL…Pottsdale. That was funny. Also Ocotillo Springs. Now that’s pretty funny right there.
10:33 pm on August 6th, 2014
Tupper!…I bet not. I bet he is wondering what she and I will be up to…heh!heh!…Or what strange questions my friend might ask…snort!snort!…If anyone has a good time I am betting it won’t be Spencer…chorkel!
GAME!…Well we went on a walk and then when we came back the Cubbies had a really bad pitcher pitching and the Rockies were able to score 8 runs…heh!heh!…So now it is 8 ta 4 Rockies being ahead for a change this season….sniff!
10:55 pm on August 6th, 2014
Buddy!…My guess is almost everybody is busy reading Paw and Order…snort!…Not me. I’m busy watching August baseball, like it or not…grunt!
11:00 pm on August 6th, 2014
Game!…Well, the Cubbies switched out their bad pitcher and now the score is 13 ta 4…heh!heh!…Rockies are in the lead…Wooo!Hooo!…Baby steps, baby steps…sniff!
11:05 pm on August 6th, 2014
Sorry we can’t be here for turning the page on the blog, but our soft warm beds are calling.
G’night all.

Good Night!…You page-turners you!…heh!
11:16 pm on August 6th, 2014

Rockies will win this game!!
Might All

Rio, Mom says thank you. She is doing better.
11:21 pm on August 6th, 2014
SiberH!…If yer Maw wants or needs anything from the Tattered Cover, you tell her to send an SDD to me and I will get’er done…snort!
11:24 pm on August 6th, 2014
OK, now this is just weird. Mama had a late night snack of watermelon yogurt. That is she was having it until Sage went wild over it and demanded to finish the cup. If he could have crawled into the container he would have.
Really? Kat’s like watermelon yogurt?
Sheesh, you gotta live here to believe this stuff.
Good night for real.
11:26 pm on August 6th, 2014
Weird!…This is a weird first for me…sniff!…Why can’t this happen during FOM selection night?…grunt!…A double Rio posted at the top of this here blog…heh!heh!
11:35 pm on August 6th, 2014
WIN!….WIN!WIN!WIN!…The Rockies finally WIN!..heh!…Night all! Sweet dreams of winning…chorkel!sneeze!

T’s Mama–A Youth Series? Won’t that take valuable time from the C and B series?
