This is going to be tough. Have to tell you that our neighbor dog Brad passed away Saturday night. We got a garbled message at about 10 from Brad’s mom, and by the time we heard the audio message the worst was confirmed. I went with Donna and our son Bob to talk to her. She’d been saying for weeks that Brad was spending a lot of time with the vet – enlarged heart, loss of appetite and, lately coughing. I walked with Yuji and Brad a week ago and there was nothing in his looks or behavior to tip you off that he was in trouble. Brad was a one dog community resource – a read-to-me dog for first graders and visitor to retirement homes, and lots of smiles with people in between. He was Yuji’s best pal and Yuji is already looking perplexed walking by Brad’s house. During the hour that we were there helping with the grieving process, something odd happened. From behind Donna’s head we heard the distinct sound of a dog coughing. “What was that?” exclaimed Brad’s mom. Donna was glad that there were four people in the room to witness this. For my money it was a signal. “I’m okay…I’m out of pain…I will love you forever.” Rest is peace Brad.

Quote from a book by Sara Paretsky: “Perfect love casts out fear, we are told. None of us is capable of perfect love, but as we help each other along this difficult journey which is life, the love we bear for one another does ease our burdens. And even in death, that love binds us together; truly, in death, we are not divided.”

Thanks to all of you who are accompanying me and others on our various journeys. Perhaps, as humans, we are indeed not capable of perfect love but I would argue that dogs certainly are. They give so much and keep trying to understand us humans and put up with our foibles and shortcomings.

So sorry to hear about Brad. He was evidently a very special dog. It is always so hard to let go of our babies when we have to. He is still with the family in spirit, and as someone said earlier, he will be there as long as needed and as long as he needs to be there.

We just realized that Spence was pawtographing the books at the Houston signing. Didn’t even notice until now. Hope he remembers Chet’s stamp as the other stops. We know Chet was there in heart.

Beau, you need to give Peyton some time to restart. He was out hurt for an entire season and he will probably get his groove straightened out soon (hopefully, NOT against the Texans!) Rio, the regular refs are locked out by the owners, we think. Desparately need them back.

My condolences to Brad’s family. I know very well what it is like to lose such a friend. My Caesar was quite the community dog, although not quite as active as Brad. But all the dogless children in the neighborhood could count in him as a surrogate and the International Festival was his favorite. Could always count on stumbling across a dropped hot dog or nacho.

Spence did indeed remember to bring the paw stamp. All my books are autographed and pawtographed. I have a smaller version I use for Christmas cards. Caesar, Goliath and now Ramses use it as a signature. I even used to use it at school for papers, telling the kids it was the Caesar paw of approval. He’s still my desktop image.

BTW Peter told us that he’s signed a long term contract and is already working on book SIX! Yay!
