Spence and Nana! We are so happy Nana made it to see Spence.

Macy, Good for your mom for signing up for those classes. Texas History would be our favorite class. Maybe she can knit you a sweater. My mom would flunk knitting.

    Go, Nana, go!!

Regarding last night’s discussion of reading material, I was a voracious reader of series growing up, including some more obscure ones in addition to the more standard ones. I ready the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift Junior (and some of the original Tom Swift ones from the 1920s), Tom Corbett, Digby Allen, Rick Brandt, Ken Holt, Bronc Burnett, Chip Hilton ( the last two being sports series), as well as Nancy Drew (which I borrowed from my cousins) and Trixie Belden and at least a few of the Tarzan series. I also read a fair amount of science fiction, including a series put out by Winston of science fiction books for young readers; while I liked them a lot, science fiction just never took hold for me the way that mysteries did. I do have a confession of sorts though, I think of all the series I read, I actually liked the Trixie Belden ones the best.

Nana and Spence: Two gorgeous people!

Speaking of series, have any of youse read Hazel Holt’s Mrs. Malory books? I suppose they would be classified as English cozies. I love reading the description of rain, wind, and fog, especially when it is almost 90 degrees and humid where I am living. Sometimes she describes “fine” days, also. And the relationship between Sheila and her dog (Tris) and cat (Foss) seem to me just right. We all know who has the upper paw:

“Next day the sun was still blazing down. The animals, who in the winter, always crouch pathetically close to whatever source of heat they can find, now shunned the sun and both lay stretched out (Tris panting from time to time and Foss expressing total exhaustion by the occasional wearily lifted eyelid) on the relatively cool tiled floor of the kitchen, rousing themselves only to lap noisily from the various bowls of water I left around the house for them, and all the time regarded me reproachfully as the obvious author of their misery.” — from Mrs. Mallory and No Cure for Death

Here is an old series: Elsie Dinsmore. By MarthaFinley
The first book was published in 1896. My grandmother read them because it was thought to be good for girls. My mother read them because her mother said to. My mom said she thought I would find them interesting. They are a hoot. Elsie’s mother died when she was young. She is being raised by her father. She ponders good and evil often, crying over how evil she is.

    Yay Nana! Yay Spence.

So far my favorite part is on page 108.

    This is not a spoiler..

What was going on? All so complicated. Sometimes I simply turn my face to the sky and howl. This turned out to be one of those times.
    “God almighty,” Bernie said.

Not a SPOILER: I like the several times Chet says, “Didn’t Suzie have somewhere to go?”

  13. B.Stover
    4:03 pm on August 8th, 2014

Not a SPOILER: I also like the scene when Chet wants to go up the ladder first: “Him first? Meaning…whoa! Not me? How could that possibly make sense? Going first was part of my job.” And he thinks about nipping Bernie’s ankle. “Just the lightest possible nip, as a way of continuing our conversation about who goes first…” (167).

I’ll have lots of fun to look forward to this weekend!

Kind of a downer, but I’m left wondering about our priorities as a society. Like, they’re all screwed up. Just had this customer who, well, she didn’t call about this, but she seemed pretty upset, so asked her what was wrong. Seems her husband, who has Alzheimers, has to move into a nursing home, and his family is pushing her to divorce him. You know, so he has fewer assets. Or something. seriously? Money. an’t take it with you. 35 years of marriage she’s just expected to throw away and leave? Is money really that much more important than people and relationships? So sad…really…what has this world come to?

    /good luck in Orange tonight, TM… 🙂

    5:35 pm on August 8th, 2014

I mostly meant the family. OK, if he has to be moved to a nursing home, as if that isn’t bad enough to have to take in, she’s expected to divorce him for financial reasons. Yeah, she was pretty upset. I’m pretty upset for her. I won’t say I can exactly identify, except that I can really get behind her upset. Melanie’s health isn’t great. Fortunately this isn’t a decision we’ve had to make, and hopefully won’t have to make ever, but it’s one that potentially could be in our future. Progressive genetic conditions suck. But woe to the person who suggests I divorce her over it.

    Greetings!

How lovely Nana looks next to the handsome Spence! I wonder if Nana got her little passport stamped.

I have not read as far in PaO as some of youse, but I am having a great time reading it, and laughing out loud. My hardcover is expected to arrive. On Momday.

THIEVES! If youse are around, I need a question answered. I was watching a bit of a show, I think it is called “Alaska in the Wild”. I know your Lady has had the wretched moose head stew, but has she ever eaten porcupine ? The folks on the show were sautéing up a big old pan of it. And how does one skin a porcupine?

I think the reason Sibers don’t eat skunks is because their moms are rushing out the door, waving their arms, and screaming leave the skunk alone.

Rattlesnake actually does taste like chicken.

A neighboring lady and I went to Girl’s Night Out at the quilt shop. We had a good time, mostly. The part where she threw up in the bathroom could have been skipped.

It also kept me from reading my new book. (Not the throwing up but the other) (Sorry Rio) But YOU get to meet our favorite author so therefore…

The blog is always quieter when a new Chet and Bernie is out. I expected that. I wonder if we will get to 50 posts today.

Rio, isn’t there a ball game you should be watching? Mr.Staff (who is at a Bluegrass Festival) http://minnesotabluegrass.org/index.php?contentID=559

said that Tulowitski wants to be traded. He said that will be bad for the Rockies. Have you heard of this?

Staff!…I think I mentioned (above) that the blog is quiet because everyone who is lucky enough to have a copy of PAW is hunkered down reading it right now…grunt!

Tulo!…Regarding Tulo, it would be devastating to me and my friend if he left the Rockies….sob!…But a guy with that much talent needs to be on a winning team, not a basement dwelling team like this one…sniff!….I know in his heart he wants to be like Todd Helton and stay with this team his whole career, but the way things are going who can blame him for jumping ship…sob!sob!sob!….Yes, it will be very, very bad for the Rockies. Just ask SiberH…wheeze!..It will stink big-time like a skunk cornered in one of SiberH’s big holes…gasp!wheeze!
