At 7 PM up in north country: Spence at White Birch Books in North Conway, NH – a state with no state tax. What are the others?
Welcome Aspen & Miles, sleepy dude, Shiner.

This may be Spence’s last stop before heading home.
State tax – I believe Florida might be another one.
Good morning everyone who is out there and awake.
9:18 am on September 24th, 2012
We know Delaware has no sales taxes; not sure about income taxes.
Interestingly, while New Hampshire has no sales or income taxes, they do tax interest, dividends, property, and a host of other stuff.
Good morning!
9:39 am on September 24th, 2012
Michigan has state taxes. I think Spence is going to the reading tonight from home (Mass.). Have a good time Spence.
Good morning all.
10:00 am on September 24th, 2012
Nevada does not have a state tax.
Staff, my address is in dish lickers. Thanks again!
10:21 am on September 24th, 2012
Thank you all, from Zoë, me and The Pack. We are not doing. We have RAC (Random Acts of Crying) frequently.
For the past 6 years our lives have been about Dan. It feels as if our magnetic North has gone. We will find our way, but right now we are resting and healing.
I have not read the entire blog for the last two or three days. Of if I have read some it has been every other word, snicker.
I will be printing them out so Zoe and I can read everyone’s comments at a slow pace.
Time is rushing and moving slow. But the center will hold, we just have to find our center once more.
The Pack has been wonderfully supportive. Lots of hugs, licks and tail wags.
Thank you all for how you have supported us not only through these days, but through the months and years that proceeded this.
C.Hobbit Harris. Our best wishes are with you.

Good morning. I’m all rested up after my big college weekend. I wore my special sweater and got lots of pets but no treats. Don’t college kids know they should always have treats in their pockets?
10:26 am on September 24th, 2012
No state tax in Washington either but there is 6.5% sales tax.
Spence: I’ll bet it is nice to be back on your side of the country after your Whirl Wind Tour (for which we thank you).
10:31 am on September 24th, 2012
Melanie: Thank you for letting us know how you and Zoe are doing. You both are in our thoughts and prayers as is CHobbitHarris.
10:33 am on September 24th, 2012
Princess Sam, good point. For some reason practically everyone Chet knows carries treats or keeps them in their desks.
Melanie RAC are the body’s way of washing out the pain. They slow down a lot once you are all cleaned out. Do newfies like tears? I find them to be a tasty treat, but mom doesn’t really like to share them.
10:37 am on September 24th, 2012
Sam: If college kids have treats in their pockets, they eat them themselves.
10:39 am on September 24th, 2012
When you are the primary care givers for someone who is failing, it takes some time to adjust to that task suddenly being taken away. Give youselves time to heal.
On a much lighter note, when we were dring back home after the book signing, Kelly commented “I am so glad he was such a nice man. Wouldn’t it have been awful, as much as you love him and the blog, if he had been an arrogant *******”. Too funny!
10:42 am on September 24th, 2012
Macy: We are very sorry for the situation in which you find yourself with your former employer. It seems a very unnecessary and vicious tactic to us. Thinking here they are looking for a way to cover their backsides. Someone mentioned perhaps the union could help? Hopefully this is the case.
10:46 am on September 24th, 2012
Montana has no sales tax. They do have state taxes though. I know because I paid ’em.
Sam: I think you better educate those college students. No treats, indeed!
10:52 am on September 24th, 2012
Texas has no state income tax but sales tax and property taxes are substantial.
Morning everyone!
11:03 am on September 24th, 2012
States with no state income tax are South Dakota, Texas, Florida, Nevada, Alaska, Wyoming, Washington.
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no sales tax.
Wolfie, got your addy. Boxes being sent out this afternoon.
11:30 am on September 24th, 2012
Okay. About to check on this mysterious message from computer land regarding the counterfeit (gasp!) Windows 7.
May the siber-gods be with us.
11:36 am on September 24th, 2012
Masquers: Let us know what you find out.
11:43 am on September 24th, 2012
We have state income tax. AND sales tax of 6.25%.
And we have blizzards and long cold winters.
What the heck is Mama thinking by living here?
Oh yeh – autumn. And lobsters. And white Christmases.
Oh well
11:49 am on September 24th, 2012
We love Macy’s thoughts on tears. Cry away, Melanie. Zoe, and CHH. You too, Macy’s mom.
We have our UPS truck-drivers and mailman educated on the need for treats. Just try dropping off a package at a 4 Sibes household, without treats.
11:54 am on September 24th, 2012
Some thoughts about what Melanie and CHHarris are going through.
Taking care of elderly parents is a full time job. There is no end date. It is always a shock when it ends since you didn’t know it would happen NOW and you are totally unprepared for ‘after’.
Know that you did the job the very best you could and your father is done with this earthly life and that you have succeeded in the job.
Blessings on you both.
12:04 pm on September 24th, 2012
Melanie and Zoe, I’m glad to hear you two are resting. Be very good to yourselves right now.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you guys and CHarris.
12:19 pm on September 24th, 2012
Macy’s Mom – That awful job was not for you. Those people clearly demonstrate The Peter Principle.
You might want to try working at a temporary office job to use those skills you picked up recently. A temp job helps an employer and employee equally decide if the job is a good fit for both.
12:29 pm on September 24th, 2012
I think all of the Plunderers should pool their money to buy lottery tickets together every week. Then when we win, we can afford that yearly get-together in some exotic locales. (i.e. Alaska)
12:29 pm on September 24th, 2012
Macy, That is good advice from Molly’s Mom.
1:38 pm on September 24th, 2012
Do you know what today is? It is National Punctuation Day! For all of our blog grammarians, and especially Queen B, I thought you would get a kick out of that. And this is an article to check out for an interesting way of celebrating, by testing your punctuational know-how. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/william-b-bradshaw/national-punctuation-day-_b_1908136.html#slide=1558796
Also, for those of you who periodically ponder what any certain someone might do in a particular set of circumstances, I recently say a bumper sticker that posed the question perfectly:
What would Scooby do?
Wookie
2:26 pm on September 24th, 2012
Thank you Wookie. I checked it out and the examples are correct and make perfect sense.
The bumper sticker is good.
3:53 pm on September 24th, 2012
Thanks for the link on punctuation, Wookie.
Which reminds me…today is Boris’ birthday! We join the O.Howlers in a Happy Birthday Howl.
5:42 pm on September 24th, 2012
Thanks for the Howl-Along, BSD!
We just finished AFOC (sigh). The End seemed to be more of a Beginning.
And did any of youse read those acknowledgements in the back? How about this from Kirkus Reviews: “Tender-hearted Chet and literal-minded Bernie are the coolest human/pooch duo this side of Wallace and Gromit.” We think that reviewer confused Chet and Bernie.
7:21 pm on September 24th, 2012
Belle Starr: Wondering if you might be able to get your four-legged to blur over, pick up my dear friend, and Kat, the smoochiest of the Smoochers. My doctor suggested monthly lightning bolt maintenance. Can you be here Wednesday? My nurse Lisa is very nice, and she’ll let youse guys watch over me.
7:27 pm on September 24th, 2012
Happy Birthday Boris! Yes, we agree, it should be tender hearted Bernie and literal minded Chet. Duh!
Wookie, thanks for the grammar link. That was very interesting.
Barb has read only the first 3 chapters of AFOC so far. She is proud of her self control! She thinks it is the best one yet!
7:29 pm on September 24th, 2012
Belle-Starr & Rose: Always packed and ready to go!
7:42 pm on September 24th, 2012
Wose: My sparkly, pink backpack is ready to go. Let’s see, I have candy flavored Chapstick, glittery stickers, my framed photo of Rio, slim Jim’s and my two legged just put in a bag of Swedish fish. She said the last item was for good measure whatever that means. It is very nice of nurse Lisa to let the Smoochers take care of you, but I will tell you what I told my two-legged: I never ask for permission when it involves my very, most special, best friend, Wose. Smoochers on three!
7:50 pm on September 24th, 2012
Belle Starr: Swedish Fish are my favorite! (whispering) I have been known to eat a Slim Jim or two…
When we get home after my lightning bolts, we can all snuggle on the big bed under my Wizard of Oz quilt. Must be careful that no one takes a header from the bed….That’s how the Prof fractured his wrist.
7:53 pm on September 24th, 2012
Bear, “Following Atticus” is on its way to you. I hope you enjoy it!
7:54 pm on September 24th, 2012
Wose: Oh, wait! I forgot about meeting Charlie. I better bring some carrots. Horses like carrotst, don’t they?
7:54 pm on September 24th, 2012
I am ready to be blurred. I packed Yummy Chummies in Mom’s brief case. I love my job!!!
7:55 pm on September 24th, 2012
Wose: A book just arrived! (and you know how much I love receiving mail) After admiring your beautiful job of packing we opened the package to find Following Atticus inside. It will be next in queue.
Barb&Magpie: We are on chapter nine here. It is so good! Trying to make it last is rather difficult…kinda like trying to resist the smell of Slim Jims.
7:56 pm on September 24th, 2012
Yes, horses love carrots, as long as they are cooked, but not mushy. Maybe with a nice glaze on them.
7:58 pm on September 24th, 2012
Serendipity! Bear, it is funny how I just mentioned the book, and it arrived at your doorstep. Please feel free to hold on to it for as long as you want.
8:01 pm on September 24th, 2012
I am worried. Where is my BF, pug-a-licious Rio?
Riiiiiiiiiooooooooo!
8:17 pm on September 24th, 2012
Sammie, do you have any new pictures of you at college in your special sweater?
8:23 pm on September 24th, 2012
KatDog, Masquers do you know how to cook carrots? I’m not allowed to use the stove.
8:32 pm on September 24th, 2012
Wose, Molly’s Mom took pictures but hasn’t gotten to post them yet. I will pester her to get on it tomorrow.
I might not look fluffy in the pictures. I had rained in the morning and I (accidentally) rolled in the wet grass, many times.
8:36 pm on September 24th, 2012
Principal!….What’s the Peter Principal that Mollys Mom mentioned up above?…grunt!
8:37 pm on September 24th, 2012
Peter!…Does this have anything to do with the Charming Mr. Abrahams and all his writing rules?…sniff!sniff!
8:42 pm on September 24th, 2012
Belle Starr, when Mommy cooks carrots for Annie and the other horsies, she holds one up…like so. Then horsie takes a bite. Does that help?
8:42 pm on September 24th, 2012
Hey gang! We love carrots, any which way you figure. Cooked, raw, sliced, whole, whatever. Our favorite thing is when Mama getd the bags of peeled baby carrots. Yum!! We could eat the whole bag by ourselves!
Melanie told us today that she got some lovely emails and messages from the Plunderers. She would really like to thank everyone and respond, but she ran into one little roadblock. Some very nice messages came to her through the Dishlickers site, but two weren’t signed. And since they came from that site, she can’t hit the respond button to send a message back to the writers.
So – if you sent her an unsigned message from Dishlickers – would you be good enough to send her another message and let her know who you are? Thanks
8:42 pm on September 24th, 2012
Belle-Starr: I do and will take care of it.
8:45 pm on September 24th, 2012
Hi Riö: How goes your day?
8:46 pm on September 24th, 2012
Rio, even I know the Peter Principle. That’s when someone in an organization rises to his level of incompetence.
8:50 pm on September 24th, 2012
Rio, in fact, your friend sees that every day. The bony-fingered one is a good example.
8:59 pm on September 24th, 2012
Had my third morning volunteering at the Rescue Ink facility. This time a cat really was involved. As I do each day here (after cleaning the kitty cages) I go into the adult cat facility and take pictures, which Rescue Ink can then use any way they please. The office manager told me that most of the cats are not named, so I merrily added my own to the mix. This one looked at the camera skeptically, so I named him Spence. For no particular reason.

9:06 pm on September 24th, 2012
Sammie!…We here have never heard of that principal before, but my friend knows exactly what it means….snort!…She said she endured 10 straight hours of pure hell with no breaks and she had to eat her sandwich while working…burp!…I just don’t see how anyone can do that…sniff!….She is tired and very grumpy. We already went on our walk, which was shorter than usual…wooooo!…Then her mother (who has been home all damned day) made pancakes for supper…grunt!…Not my favorite.
9:07 pm on September 24th, 2012
Yikes!…That is one big, mean looking Kat…yeep!
9:09 pm on September 24th, 2012
Update!… The Rockies had 20 straight games left to play on their brutal schedule this season…sniff!…So far they have lost 9 straight in a row…grunt!…Even with this bleak statistic we are relaxing by watching the game right now…heh!heh!…I think Beau is still eating pancakes…sniff!
9:13 pm on September 24th, 2012
Cat says ” Adopt me. Or not. Don’t care. Get that camera outta my face. Now”
9:15 pm on September 24th, 2012
To Boris! clink
http://www.hoppinfrog.com/beers/
9:21 pm on September 24th, 2012
Terry: Kool Kat. Spence could be a star.
Howlers: To Boris! slurp.
9:32 pm on September 24th, 2012
Macy, Puurrfect caption. Too funny!
9:37 pm on September 24th, 2012
Time for supper.
See youse tomorrow – Bear
9:49 pm on September 24th, 2012
Happy birthday to Boris!
9:57 pm on September 24th, 2012
Kelly!…heh!snort!heh!…Arrogant — — – -itch! ….snort!…Not our Spence. He is many things, like short, bad typist, little if any memory, arguementative – wait, that’s Admin, but arrogant is not one of them…heh!heh!
10:00 pm on September 24th, 2012
G’nite all! G’day, Liz.
10:02 pm on September 24th, 2012
Idea!…Even though Buddy is a K-A-T he did have a good idea today…heh!…Lets all buy lottery tickets so that someone who eventually wins can foot the bill for a big get-to-gether up in Alaska….snort!…Awesome idea!
10:06 pm on September 24th, 2012
Photo!….Where the heck did Bellie Starr get a framed photo of Me!Me!Me!…heh!heh!…If she ever shows up here at my back-yard, I might pawtograph it for her…chuffle!…At at least lick it…slurp!
10:14 pm on September 24th, 2012
Rose!… I sure wish you did not have to endure those lightning bolts…grunt!…The thought of your hair catching fire frightens me every single time you have to do this krazy thing…wuffle!… Although, my friend has been experiencing some major depression lately herself. I think the whole rotten summer and now freaky Fall is catching up with her…wheeze!… She doesn’t let on that much, but I can tell there is a deep sadness surrounded by anger inside of her…wuffle!…Even my sloppy kisses can’t reach that spot.
10:22 pm on September 24th, 2012
Is it this Wed. instead of on a Friday that Rose has to endure the lightening bolts?
The Rockies are ahead by one run right now.
One of the headlines on the sport pages on the internet today was, “The Rockies are out to prove they lose 100 games in a season”.
sigh That was uncalled for.
10:26 pm on September 24th, 2012
GAH!…SiberH!…GAH!…sob!sob!sob!…We did not see that headline, thank you so much for bringing it to our attention…wuffle!
Stumped!…Our team has sooo much talent. Why oh why oh why oh why are we in such a pickel?….gurgle!…There are all those injuries, but still, there are a ton of good players playing yet….grump!
10:32 pm on September 24th, 2012
The smell of skunk is coming in the windows. Mom won’t let me go outside. I know she will take me out on a leash for “final call” tonight. Mom is no fun.
10:38 pm on September 24th, 2012
Skunked!….I’ve never been skunked and for some reason, I really do not want to experience it…grunt!…Although, this time of year seems to be when they come around and her mother likes to feed ferral Kats…grump!…So guess what that means?? If she doesn’t remember to pick up the food bowls, the skunks will be around to eat the left-overs…sniff!sniff!…Of course, I never ever hardly go out during the nighttime. Beau, on the other paw enjoys a nightly stroll around the whole back yard some evenings much to the huge disgruntlement of my friend…huffle!
10:50 pm on September 24th, 2012
Children!…Working with children has to be one of the most thankless jobs on the planet…grunt!…Just the few hours my friend and I had to spend with a couple of those little critters yesterday was enough to send us right over the edge almost..wheeze!… Dealing with the messed up kids that parents ignore is undoubtedly the hardest job going….sneeze!
10:51 pm on September 24th, 2012
Oh Yeah, The skunks love that kat food. Mom picks up my outside water dish at dark and brings it in until daylight. She hopes that will discourage the skunks from coming around.
10:53 pm on September 24th, 2012
Smelly!…Her mother is just asking for trouble if you ask me…sniff!… It’s just a matter of time before ole Beau gets it right in the chompers…heh!heh!…And he is not coming in my bedroom where all my baseball toys are if that happens. No way!…grunt!
11:06 pm on September 24th, 2012
Poor Beau, He would not like being put in isolation.
We are going to sleep soon.
Rio, Your friend has had a long day.
The Rockies could win this one. I think they will.
Night All
11:09 pm on September 24th, 2012
We are mostly packed. Just the last minute stuff for tomorrow. Much of it is already in the car. Tired out. So NOT ready to leave, but a staff has got to do what a staff has got to do. Sniff.
Mr.Staff is going to be taking care of Alice M. and AbbietheKitty while I am busy in the city. Abbie gets upset when we move her around too much. The Kats will be coming down around Thanksgiving time.
I will miss them. sniff
Night all.
11:11 pm on September 24th, 2012
Isolation!….Beau lived most of his life in isolation, so I doubt they would do that to him…snort!…I’m just saying he is not coming anywhere near my baseball toys or my bed, OR ME!ME!ME! when he does get skunked….sneeeze!wuffle!
Done!…We are almost done for this horrible day, so up to bed we will go once the game is over. I’m saying goodnight now cuz no one else is up and about this Monday night…grump!…Night!
11:13 pm on September 24th, 2012
Hey!…The Rockies wonnit!…heh! …Goodnight Staff!
1:00 am on September 25th, 2012
Well, grump. I finally make it this here blog and everyone is in their warm, soft bed with their baseball toys just so.
Rio: Belle Starr isn’t saying where she got the picture of you from, but she wants to bring it to the party for YSAS’ dead body debut and have you sign it.
Here is a picture of my handsome AJ as we were cutting firewood yesterday.

1:06 am on September 25th, 2012
I don’t know what happened with the picture in my last post, but here is a picture of AJ before he cut down a very large tree yesterday. Timber!
