Tomorrow Night In Maynard Mass.
Mystery night with Spencer Quinn and his longtime author friend Katherine Hall Page, Tuesday at 7 at the Maynard Public Library. He may reveal the 3 S’s, a seldom discussed writing secret. In fact, never.

Gooood morning everyone! Melanie, got the “high”/”moral” joke, just being quiet. BDS?, we think, yes, Muddy Monday! No yard work here yet without gills, fins and flippers. Mystery month sounds like fun 🙂
8:57 am on May 6th, 2013
Spence, hope you got all the lawn and garden work done.
Wonder what the 3 S’s might be. Any ideas anyone?
Nice day here, will be in the upper 60’s and no rain. Yea!
Just as I thought there were no bones brought home. In fact there was no anything. Seems this guy named Gus got the leftovers and didn’t share.
The kids get to chose the menu for their birthdays and Ben’s first choice was grilled cheese sandwiches, mac and cheese and cheesy potatoes. They convinced him that burgers would be better and added a spinach and strawberrie salad for some color contrast.
9:03 am on May 6th, 2013
First! I’m First!
Wait…No, not me…a Herd of Hounds has bet me to the punch.
And…Magpie…You are up early too. Hmm…3 S’s…don’t have any idea.
Good Morning Everyone!
9:07 am on May 6th, 2013
Staff, Promise to take a picture of the new beds and post it for you. One recommendation – use any length you want, but don’t go any wider than 5 feet. You can easily reach across from the sides if you stick with that width. Barb’s first raised bed was 8 x 8 and you could not reach the middle without stepping into the bed.
9:10 am on May 6th, 2013
I’d like to hear what the 3 S’s are.
Good morning all.
9:20 am on May 6th, 2013
I know the five W’s of journalism….
9:48 am on May 6th, 2013
We’re not sure but we bet that the 3 S’s and 5 W’s aren’t: hook, line and sinker.
9:52 am on May 6th, 2013
Good morning, all! We don’t know what the 3 S’s could be, but we suspect the 3 W’s are Who, What,Where.
We were without internet most of yesterday, so we would now like to wish a belated Happy Birthday to Pookey, and a Welcome to Finn! We love that name too, but somehow expected an IS or IW!
Staff, the 2 lettuces we are growing are Butter Crunch and Red Sails. Both are loose leaf. Our raised beds are all 4 foot wide.
9:59 am on May 6th, 2013
IS or IW?
Also, Morning everyone. 🙂
Glad to know I’m not the only one growing veggies this year. Stupid HOA doesn’t allow traditional gardens, so I had to get a little creative.
10:04 am on May 6th, 2013
Fiin’s mom, Irish Setter or Irish Wolfhound. 🙂
Tell us about your non-traditional garden…
10:05 am on May 6th, 2013
…When, Why.
Story or situation..???
Good morning, FinnDog. How Creative did you get?
10:06 am on May 6th, 2013
Fortunately in our subdivision there are no restrictions against gardens, although there might be a problem if we tilled up the front yard and put in a corn patch. Our raised beds are on the back/side right next to our property line. The neighbor has a small raised bed just across from ours, so she won’t object either.
Off to pt. Only 4 sessions left and we are done!
10:06 am on May 6th, 2013
Good morning, it is nice to be back at my humble laptop. The squirrel pic that I posted yesterday was from one of the cemeteries we visited on our trip. I felt that he was being deliberately rude.

Here is another sign that has me puzzled. It is at an historic mission. How do you enforce this?
Is there a cat-shooer somewhere?
10:07 am on May 6th, 2013
BSD, You know we can’t count! 🙂
10:11 am on May 6th, 2013
3!…I bet two of the three are “Subject” and “Story”…snort!…I can’t think of a third – yet…grunt!
10:13 am on May 6th, 2013
I used Whisky barrels cut in half. The rules state no permanent gardens, so I have sixlined along the side and back of the house plus a few out front. They can be moved, albeit not easily, but they are well within the rules, lol.
I would loooove an Irish Wolfhound. I need more living space for one, though.
10:19 am on May 6th, 2013
Mom loves IWs too. She hurts our husky feelings because she always wishes for an IW.
10:22 am on May 6th, 2013
Maggie! Isn’t today your BirthDay? Will there be Special Treats?
10:22 am on May 6th, 2013
Finn: Very creative!
B&M: Sounds like “guidelines” around here. Mom’s herb garden sits outside kitchen door on west side of house. This year she has 25(she told us) older, good pots that she’s going to put on stairs, handrails, gutters. We draw the line on the HOH.
10:24 am on May 6th, 2013
Maggie: Whoo hoo yodel howl, and many more.
10:27 am on May 6th, 2013
Snacks—goes without saying
Snooze—it is always good to get a nap in…or two…or three
Stealing—we are not sure what this has gibson at writing; but our lady says we are very good at it.
10:29 am on May 6th, 2013
subject…setting…suspense
10:30 am on May 6th, 2013
Damn Ipaw! “…this has to do with writing” was autocorrected to “gibson at…”
10:34 am on May 6th, 2013
Good Morning All
In the past, I think Spence has mentioned what the 3 Ss are, but, oh dog, I forget.
Rio, Tell your friend to get the green chili planted. The NM crop may not be very good this year because of the drought. This means they will be expensive.
10:36 am on May 6th, 2013
We thought Maggie’s bd was the 7th (or 8th?)
10:42 am on May 6th, 2013
Sibes, Siestas, Sun.
10:46 am on May 6th, 2013
I can’t stop laughing at Pancho and Lefty’s auto-correction, “gibson at.” (It was very confusing.) Can’t auto-correct be turned off?
Five W’s of journalism: who, what, where, why and when. As I recall, all of the answers are supposed to be in the first paragraph of a news story.
10:47 am on May 6th, 2013
Fellow Sibers, That’s it. That is what Spence said the 3 Ss are.
11:23 am on May 6th, 2013
O’Howlers: We went back to check and You Are Correct. Magpie said her B-Day is tomorrow, the 7th, but one can’t start Celebrating too soon we always say.
12:01 pm on May 6th, 2013
Hello?
12:04 pm on May 6th, 2013
Macy’s Mom, There is no way that mission church is going to get a cat to follow that order. In fact, no cats follow any orders.
12:05 pm on May 6th, 2013
Hello Macy and Mom!
12:05 pm on May 6th, 2013
how about spelling for another s? In honor of this band of bloggers?
Calling vet soon for Lady’s appt.
12:05 pm on May 6th, 2013
Rebecca!…check your SDD ASAP!…snort!…Pronto!
SiberH!…Yup! She is planning on planting hot chili peppers again this year…snort!…Bought the compost and garden soil to mix in with the old stuff come this weekend…heh!…This is something Beau and I can help with too! Digging in the dirt…grunt!
12:13 pm on May 6th, 2013
Rio, I wish I could be there because I would be BIG help.
Macy and Macy’s Mom…Hello! Hugs!!!
C.Harris, When you can, please let us know how Lady is doing and how the vet appointment went.
12:44 pm on May 6th, 2013
SiberH!…You would dig all the dirt out of the bed and then someone would be very unhappy…snort!… Beau and I will just scratch the surface and kick dirt on each other…heh!
1:03 pm on May 6th, 2013
Good
MorningAfternoon!Morning was taking up with Momager duties. That meant going down the hills one way. This afternoon? C. Hobbit: If Lady is going to the v e t today maybe we’ll meet you there. Gracie is still limping, but her infected paw is better. Might have to change the meds again.
Finn’s Mom, love your way of being “within” the rules, but not.
Could NOT figure out the Gibson thing. I went back and started reading everything again. Then I saw the other post.
Simple, Stunning Sentences.
1:04 pm on May 6th, 2013
Macy, tell your mom that sign makes no sense.
Isn’t there a saying, “It’s like trying to herd kats?”
1:11 pm on May 6th, 2013
I suspect one of the esses is sex. Jeez you guys. (However spelling is important too.)
hahahahahahahha
Barb, I laid a 4 foot rule and a 3 foot rule out on the ground and decided that 3 foot would be my maximum width. Both Mr.Staff and I are height and arm length challenged. Also the permeable weed barrier is 3 feet wide. I could go 4 feet easily enough probably except for the weed barrier. We grow mighty strong ‘quack’ grass here.
Is that a good enough reason to keep it to 3 feet?
Hoping for the best for Lady and CHobbit.
Howdy to Mz Macy. Welcome back to your ‘rents. That sign is annoying. What about service kats???? Huh???? what about them!
1:15 pm on May 6th, 2013
Thank you, everyone 🙂 My dehydrator and canner is going to be working over time. I used up all my emergency storage last year.
Yes, we use “(insert action here) is like trying to herd cats.” at work all the time.
1:23 pm on May 6th, 2013
Service Kats. Yes!
1:33 pm on May 6th, 2013
Staff, Can you only reach it from one side? 3′ is pretty small if you can reach from both sides – only 18″. If you can reach from both sides 4′ is probably perfect. We went 5′ because there was only room for 2 gardens. Then we did what HOH did – put whiskey barrels along one side of the back yard. We did 4 of those.
Here are the promised pics of the 2 raised beds. First pic shows what it looks like with just the bottom board.

1:45 pm on May 6th, 2013
Oleys, you are right. Tomorrow is my birthday, but I have no objections to starting the party today. We can call it a Birth-week!
Here is Barb’s next picture.

1:58 pm on May 6th, 2013
The second bed is for the 8 tomato plants. You can see the half barrels along the inside of the fence. Since I am a girl dog, the plants will not get peed on (as we know happens at someone’s house).
2:08 pm on May 6th, 2013
Because of the dimensions of lumber (8′, 12′), that’s why 4′ is used and you only have to reach in 2 feet,
2:29 pm on May 6th, 2013
Rio: Yeep! Checked. Responded. Over and out.
2:30 pm on May 6th, 2013
Staff, We have Quack grass here too, and it is almost impossible to git rid of it. Barb brought a garbage can full of compost here last August, and when she dug down 3 feet to the bottom of the compost, there was a quack grass root, and it was growing!
We have been told that if you put newspaper down – 4 to 6 pages thick – before you start filling the bed with dirt that it will kill out the underlying grass before it disintegrates. Sorry for such a run on sentence.
2:59 pm on May 6th, 2013
Good Afternoon!
Kind of feel like I’m living on another planet. Still adjusting to my new med regiment I guess. Welcome to Chi-Weenie…you are cute.
Hope the Storyteller continues to do well.
3:10 pm on May 6th, 2013
Rose!…Can i have some of your meds?…sniff!…I feel like I could really use some today…grunt!
3:23 pm on May 6th, 2013
Wish we would have known about that newspaper trick before we did our raised beds. We get grass grass grass in ours. We get very little other weeds. Also, ours are only 1 board high. We like the higher one, Maggie.
3:25 pm on May 6th, 2013
By the way, what is quack grass? Is that the same as chickweed?
Another by-the-way, Sasha would still lift her leg on whatever. She was a girl dog in name only.
3:29 pm on May 6th, 2013
Oh! Oh! Oh! The baby is out of surgery and all went well!
Thanks everyone, for your prayers and pawsitive thoughts.
3:35 pm on May 6th, 2013
O’Howlers: That is the best news ever. Will continue to send pawsitive, healing thoughts to the little one.
3:37 pm on May 6th, 2013

3:51 pm on May 6th, 2013
Rose!…That is exactly what I was hoping for!…heh!heh! … A Galaxy Far Far Away…snort!

4:24 pm on May 6th, 2013
Follow the yellow brick road, follow the yellow brick road……
RIO! Are you with me? Are you skipping down the road with me?
4:24 pm on May 6th, 2013
Bear!…Way to ruin a good time…sniff!
4:26 pm on May 6th, 2013
Rose!…Yes, I am with you. I want to beat-up some Munchkins…snort! snort!
4:28 pm on May 6th, 2013

4:33 pm on May 6th, 2013
Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!
4:36 pm on May 6th, 2013
Bear!…Now, there’s the spirit!…grunt!
4:49 pm on May 6th, 2013
Hate to be an old stick in the mud, but we will answer Oley’s question on the Quack grass. One of these answers is correct:
1. It is a favorite food of ducks.
2. It quacks like a duck when you pull it.
3. It is a wide bladed grass with long spaghetti like roots. If you pull it but leave behind any small pieces of the roots, those too will start growing, so it is very difficult to eliminate.
4:58 pm on May 6th, 2013
Quack, quack, quack! Do we win?
5:03 pm on May 6th, 2013
Lady made a peaceful journey over the bridge today. I was with her the whole time. I had the vet administer a sedative first so that Lady would not be in distress and having to be muzzled. The process took longer but it allowed me more time to pet her and talk to her. Lady has three family members who went on before her so I know she was greeted with wags and purrs.
When AJ saw her on Saturday, he asked if she was a sled dog. I was tickled because I always thought she should have been a sled dog because she loved to run and it was such a joy to watch her go towards the horizon. We had three lovely walks the last two days, the last one just the two of us which she really enjoyed. The sun was shining, the snow was melting–she was able to smell a bit of spring.
Sadie and I are ok. A new life is beginning for us and for Lady.
5:08 pm on May 6th, 2013
Good grief….
5:14 pm on May 6th, 2013
CHobbit!…I am very sad and yet I know Lady is in a comfortable place…sob!…It will be harder on the ones who are left behind…sniffle!…I will say some pug-prayers for youse two to plunder on to your next adventure in a new town…sniffle!
5:25 pm on May 6th, 2013
Carol, we are very sorry for your loss. I am very weepy today anyway, so I will weep for your family. (((hugs)))
5:29 pm on May 6th, 2013
CHarris: I’m so sorry about Lady. Thinking of you.
5:43 pm on May 6th, 2013
C.Hobbit: Your Dear Lady is Welcomed over the Bridge.
Hugs to you and Sadie Bear.
5:44 pm on May 6th, 2013
CHobbit, so sorry to hear about Lady. She will always be near, in your heart. She has wonderful friends waiting on the Bridge. Saying tender prayers for you both.
5:46 pm on May 6th, 2013
Sob, sob
5:56 pm on May 6th, 2013
CHobbit, that is so sad. Do you need Smoochers?
6:10 pm on May 6th, 2013
Princess Sam: Sadie would be jealous if the Smoochers arrived. We are doing ok. Thanks everyone. Life goes on; memories are deep.
6:16 pm on May 6th, 2013
C.Hobbit, We are so sorry for your loss, but we know Lady has gone to a good place. Maybe at Rainbow Bridge she will decide to be a sled dog. Hugs and prayers for you and Sadie.
6:20 pm on May 6th, 2013
C. Hobbit and Sadie Bear,
The entire Pack is thinking of the three of you.
Tears here.
6:22 pm on May 6th, 2013
CHobbit: We will keep pawsitive thoughts going out to you. The best thing Lady left you was memories!
6:36 pm on May 6th, 2013
C.Harris, We are so sad for you, yet happy to know how much you and Lady loved each other. She is now in a good place, with her other family members, where she can be a great sled dog. There are lots of friends up at the Bridge with her too. Take care. Cuddle with Sadie.
6:48 pm on May 6th, 2013
CHobbit: My heart goes out to you. Glad her journey was peaceful and quiet. I lost my Chey a few months ago, so she is in good company. Many heart felt thoughts and hugs to you and yours.
6:51 pm on May 6th, 2013
Everyone else has said it so well. We share in you sadness, Carol and Sadie. We know you gave Lady the best kind of love, and now she is running like a puppy with no pain or limitations.

7:22 pm on May 6th, 2013
CHobbit: I have it on good authority that she was greeted warmly on the other side of the Bridge with a harness in paw. I also have it on good authority that Lady will never leave you. The veil is thin and easily crosses. Loves and head bumps to you from us at Snowhook.
7:44 pm on May 6th, 2013
Carol – You did well with and for Lady. You may see her in the next Iditarod.
8:13 pm on May 6th, 2013
Thank you everyone. Plunderers are never far from each others’ hearts. (disclaimer: the apostrophe may be in the wrong place)
Here is a list of “s” words mentioned today on the blog, any additions to make before Spence reveals all? story, situation, subject, setting, suspense, snacks, snooze, stealing, sibers, siestas, sun, spelling, simple, stunning sentences, sex.
8:27 pm on May 6th, 2013
Carol. So very sorry about Lady, but it sounds as though she crossed the bridge very peacefully. I know a certain golden retriever, among others, who was there to greet her and help her on her way.
8:50 pm on May 6th, 2013
CHobbit: Sounds sensible.
8:56 pm on May 6th, 2013

“There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home….
8:58 pm on May 6th, 2013
C. Hobbit, a good list. I would try to add more, but my brain won’t let me.
I asked the v e t about Benny, the Newfounland Dog, commercial. We pulled it up on the computer.
Survey Says . . A cocker spaniel puppy.
9:17 pm on May 6th, 2013
Dear CHobbit. Hugs and kisses from Alice M. and Abbie the Kitty. We know your memories are happy.
Barb and Maggie,
Thank you for the information. I was already planning to put both a both a permeable landscape fabric and 1/4 inch hardware cloth down before adding the dirt. Do you think I need the newspaper also? I buy the lumber tomorrow, Cedar is on sale at Menards only 60 miles away. 😀
Good thing Mr.Staff likes to get newspapers. Oh and he found 4 ft. wide landscape fabric so we are going with the 4 foot width.
