    When Mom was in Nashville, she visited Carnton Plantation. This was the site of one of the bloodiest battles in Civil War History: 10,000 casualties in 5 hours.
    It was a powerful experience because Mom is completely ignorant of the Civil War.

    To those who have fought for us, on these shores and others: thank you.

    Let’s remember that Memorial Day is not about picnics, or going to the beach,or BBQs . It is about remembering those who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy in this country, and those who continue to serve the country they love.

    Good Morning Wolfie, Rose and All.
    Our family traditionally visited the grave site on Memorial Day to tend to it and pay our respects, as Staff did yesterday. Following this there was a picnic in the park.

    What a Great Store Opening yesterday! Can you believe it? Already we must restock the shelves.
    We wish a Great Day of Sales to our Dear Golinka and the Storyteller (whispering) thank you for saving some bears for the MMSB!)

    We had RAIN last night. At 2:30 and 4 a.m. Wowser! Lightning that wouldn’t quit. I had to get under the covers on top of Staff to be safe. It was quite scary!

    Thank you for reminding us of the true meaning of the holiday. Barb said she wished she could blur down to St. Louis to visit the graves of her mom and dad (a WWII vet), and of her wonderful step-father who is buried in the Veterans cemetary in St. Louis.

    For my mother’s favorite uncle, my Great Uncle Arnold J. Isbell, thank you for your service. He died when the USSS Franklin was hit by bombs. He was being ported to his new command USS Yorktown.

    He is well known in Navy circles. In our family one of the best stories included a dog. He was home on leave and had brought a beautiful roast (meat being rationed) for my grandmother to cook. By all accounts it was a roast of perfection. Until they all looked away and Zoë’s cocker spaniel, Patsy, grabbed it and ran. AFter a chase, they washed what was left and ate it.

    Barb & MagPie, I forgot to take a picture of the mound. It’s slightly smaller now. I also covered it up with a tarp seeing that later today we are “supposed” to get a thunderstorm.

    This morning. Ellie was concerned at 5:15 am and started barking. I came down and gave tummies and told them I was going back to sleep until at least six, they let me sleep until 7:15. amazing.

    After doing pills, feeding, cleaning the kitchen, I went out in the garage to get the flag. Forgot about the flag because I saw the wheelbarrow. Went out with the wheelbarrow and found the shovel. Got loads of dirt/compost and put shovelfuls around the strawberry plants that needed it. Then I noticed some other plants needed dirt. but then I noticed one flower plant was getting crowded out by the callie lily that is taking over. So I dug out part of the lily, but I hate to waste a pretty plant. So I dug another hole in an area that the lily can take over and found an old rusty bread knife (I think). Planted the lily, but more dirt around those other plants and then noticed my tire raised beds and the gutter garden needed plumping up. So I did that. Then I watered everything.

    During this whole time Patsy is in the car wit the hatch open and the doors watching me from the cool shade.

    Finally got back in. I still have poop patrol and I forgot the flag.

    Our house is 200 years old this year. Eleanor Roosevelt gave a speech here and it is rumored that she spent the night in the house. We know she was here, but not if she actually spent the night.

    And so we named our first puppy Eleanor! Or Ellie for short. Since we kept one of her grandson’s what other name could he have but Frank??

    Melanie, We will be anxious to find out how your gutter garden does. We are going to plant a few replacement beans – birds ate the tops off a few as they emerged from the ground. Grump! First blooms on the ‘matoes. Before June 1st is really early for us. Back later, after it gets too hot to be out there. Upper 90’s this afternoon. Thank Dog we finally got some rain.

    Thank you, AliceM. That helped Mom decide on something. The lady who runs the shelter Mom volunteers at had asked Mom to foster a little kitten who is very scared and timid. Not adoptable material at all. Mom has been going back and forth about it since things are peaceful here. But she kept thinking about that poor little scared baby. So after watching that little video, littleMac will be coming here at least for a while….possibly his forever home.

If you are really interested, you could buy the “Sing” one that is still available and we can have Rio’s friend ship the Dream one to you and the Sing one to us.     Hello all. We are taking it easy after a scary night and morning of awful thunder storms. Mom and Pop were ready to take “Nannie” to their frienfs’ for a Sunday morning ride, but those storms once again got in the way. So now they have rescheduled the ride for tomorrow. Meantime, they must now Do the chores they were planning for tomorrow. They are going out with other friends for dinner and outdoors music later. We are hoping for no storms to hit while we are alone.

    G&BB, we think your taking care of a scared little kitty is wonderful.

    MollysMom: I bought it for Mom in her regular size, a medium, and it fits puurfectly. So far she has only tried washing it in cold water. Before purchasing, Rebecca was able to give me some helpful input, as she and AJ have been wearing their hoodies for a while now.

    Thanks again for all the good wishes. We have had some sales today and lots of “I’ll be back tomorrow”s. So we are keeping positive thoughts.

    No horrifically rude people so far this year, but a few that would make Darwin question his theory. One middle- aged, nicely dressed woman came into the booth and spent quite a few minutes looking around. Then she came over to my chair, leaned in close and confided “I met an Indian once”. And then she walked away. Maybe it was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor…..
    sigh.

    So another half hour to go and then dinner and bed and tomorrow we get to do it all again. Yippee!

    Melanie – the best way to dry the phone out is to bury it in raw rice of course the better way is to not drop it IN water.

    Hi everyone. Very busy day here in Chevy Chase. Mom and dad were completely cleaning the screened in porch so that it can be reprinted (probably next weekend’s project). The first step was removing all the latticework they had to put in around the bottom panels of all the screens because of that unfortunate incident several years ago when me and my pal Casey did some serious wrestling on the screened in porch and managed to rip apart most of the screens. That was during my young and rambunctious phase.

    Our tomato plants are doing good; blossoms on a number of them already and a couple are already more than 3 feet tall.

    B — there was a great article in today’s NYT about proper comma usage, called The Most Comma Mistakes. It is in the Sunday Review section. Talks a lot about those nefarious comma splices that you despise.

    Dad’s been doing some window shopping in the Musher Mercantile and will be ordering a bunch of stuff in the next day or so.

    G&BB: That is very nice of you to offer the dream project to Rose. I have it noted accordingly. We have a Big Mac and now a Lil Mac on this here blog.

    MollysMom: The hoodies and long-sleeve t-shirts fit pretty close to size. I’m a solid medium so that is what I ordered in the Dog Box t-shirt; for me, I wouldn’t go larger, I wouldn’t go smaller. I did order a large in the hoodie because I like to wear that type of thing big. I ordered AJ an XL because of his height. It’s roomy around his middle. I wouldn’t go bigger for him. They are sized for minimal shrinkage that might take place. I can’t tell the difference between the pre and post wash sizing.

    Wookie, We got our garden in early this year. Have been enjoying several things already. Your tomatoes are way ahead of ours, however. We do have a few with blooms, but the plants are only about a foot high. When do you put yours in and how big are they when you first plant? What kind did you do this year?

    Well, lilMac is now here and in a very large kennel with a box, food, water and covered bed so he can feel safe. He was very good on the ride home (about an hour) but when Mom took him out of the carrier, he did hiss until she cuddled him up to her. He was okay with the petting but is still very unsure of things. He is in his hidey hole bed but not overly upset, just scoping things out. Hopefully, he will adjust quickly and soon be able to join the genpop (general population for those not in the know). We will post a pic as soon as we can get one.

    Those mountain pictures make me miss Montana.
    Gus & BooBear: Awww, lilMac seems as if he will soon be right at home.
    We had a scorcher today. I planted a zuchini and some lavender. I have 4 tomatoes but they are what Barb calls the “boring” kind, because Dad insisted. They are a little over a foot tall and have a few flowers. I did not start from seed, they are from the garden store. I planted some beets from seed. They are 2 inches tall and fighting the weeds and Staff’s walking onions for survival.

    Barb and Maggie, The onions I planted are, I think, just like the ones you sent me. The ones I planted were from a friend of mine in North Dakota. His first name was Merlin and he was a magician with plants.
    I looked them up on the web and they are called: Perennial white topset onions, walking onions, Egyptian onions, winter onions, shallots, multiplier onions and scallions are common names for these onions. These onions can be planted and left in the ground year round.
