Good morning, all! Admin, this is a bad day to travel!!! We hope that isn’t too far from home for you. It is time to batten down (here, at least).

On the bad news front: Karin Hendrickson and her team were hit by a car last night. All but one of the dogs has been found so far, and they are in good shape. However, Karin has a broken leg and back. Powerful Husky Prayers are being sent from Oley.

Good morning, everyone! OFA, get a move on! OH mixed news. Puppy pawrayers being sent from the “greenest state in the land of the free”.
If anyone is traveling today, be safe. Looks like a weatherful Wednesday for many.

The rain here in upper Westchester is beginning to turn to snow. The trees look so pretty with the light dusting.

WosenGrizz prayers being sent to Karin and her team.

I know Admin will hit it out of the park this morning!

Amalia, As others have said, that is a lovely tribute to your brother. We wish we could have known him.
It is snowing very heavy here, and we were hearing lots lof thunder. Thunder in the snow is loud and long-rumbling, not cracks like in the summer.
Pop picks up the first of our CSA shares today. We will need to learn how to cook turnips and carnival squash. There is also kale and arugula, two things we don’t normally eat. But there are sweet potatoes and carrots and leeks…yumm. And (sigh) potatoes, as if we need more of those. All of these veggies are organic.

Our team having been hit twice in the past—not to that extent of last night’s accident—we wouldn’t wish it on anyone. We here hope that the musher and dogs recover fully and in short order.

Rio: I must apologize. Harris snagged the gavel from Auction Central and gave it to Belle Starr. You guessed it—It is covered in sparkles and glitter. She used superglue. I tied a ribbon around it like my mama did with the Giant’s hammer a few years back. It helps tone down the bling a little bit.

We have been watching a beautiful dance; a gift of nature that has made us stop and take the time just to appreciate the loveliness.

Across the road stand 5 very tall spruce trees. The snow is falling fast, but is light and fluffy, so is resting on the trees like icing. Those five trees are up higher than any neighborhood roof top, they stand very close together and the snow coating them is an unbroken blanket.

As we watched, the trees swayed so slowly, so gently back and forth in the slight wind. Their movements remind us of the dancers in Swan Lake, locked arm in arm, dancing in a line.

The trees somehow seem to be talking to us, comforting us. They sway and gently dip and sway the other way.

We know it is a message.

Along with the bisket, they had kale from the CSA. Mom sautéed it with olive oil and garlic. When it cooked off, and all liquid evaporated, she added salt, pepper, and red wine vinegar. Mom and Pop cannot believe kale is that good. Wow! Who woulda’ thunk it?

OH, OMD, after that post, mom wants to get into a CSA…NOW. She has met few veggies she doesn’t like and was a vegetarian for years. Your experiences sound like they would make up for not being able to grow things in this shady yard!

  69. Barb, Maggie and Lucy
    7:39 pm on November 26th, 2014

OMD, we are so happy that you liked it. Did you do the dry method, or the one with a little beef broth?
We have tried the arugula mixed with kale or spinach and then cooked the way you did it. Arugula is very strong when it is mixed in a salad, but mild when cooked. It is a little more tender than the kale.
The squash can be cooked like acorn or butternut. We cut in half, put in a baking dish with some water then bake. When done, serve with butter and salt and pepper. Or you can do brown sugar if you like it sweet.

We have a retirement pen (two right now, in fact), and have the option to come inside. Doc has claimed the innards of the dog barn as his very own. It is heated and has his own dog door, or what he calls the Doc Door. Today he followed me inside the house and never left. He wanted to be on my pillow. No! My pillow, my rules. Rule #1: This is my pillow. I would share my pillow with you. You are a speck of a thing and wouldn’t take up much room. Doc is not a speck and likes to stretch out. There would be no room for Wyatt. Rio: We are working dogs. That is what we do. Retirement can sometimes be a transition for us. What does your Saturday look like? Isn’t your Friend cooking up a storm that includes the words and flavors of brined and perfect? It sounds to us that everything is coming up pug.

Thieves, thanks for the retired update. We might understand mom better, that is why she likes the love seat and HER pillows. We will love her and sit on her.
Turkey Day, Yeah! We like turkey! Bring it on!
Mom is being a poopy pants so we need to go nighty night.

Rio, I am using Alton’s brining recipe also. Only I had to make only 1/2 of it because we only have a 12.7 lb.turkey. It will be plenty for the 5 of us. With lot’s of leftovers.

O’Howlers I wanted to mention Melanies Potato and Leek soup that is in the Dishlickers cookbook. I was waiting till I got down here to try it. For some reason leeks are hard to find in North Dakota.

Speaking of Melanie and in the (early) spirit of gratitude, I am thankful to have met her and called her friend—what a blessing! Thank you to the Creator for the gift of Melanie.

Brine!…You will Brine once and never go back to Not Brining….heh!heh!,,,There is so much moisture and flavor in the turkey if done right the way Alton instructs…snort!…I mean my friend uses the main ingredients not the hotty-toddy weird ones he throws in like ginger-candied-what-evers…snort!

Melanie!…When I finally get to eat my perfectly cooked brined turkey I will give many pug-thanks for the privilege of knowing Melanie. Even though I never met her, I knew her and I would sloppy-pug-kiss her any day of the week…snorkel!

Rio: We have no idea what our Lady’s nickname is for the Giant other than AJ. All we know is when the Giant brings home a thousand pounds of fish like he did last night, he is the Ginger-candied-whatever to us. It seems logical.

We here put in the candied ginger. Dawson had purchased some and it was the only ingredient that we didn’t normally have in our Mom’s spice cupboard.

This is Mom’s cooking spice cupboard.

She also had a baking spice cupboard…

The candied ginger is over on the left side in a plastic bag that is leaning on the toothpick boxes.

Staff: How did you convince the Giant to lean against the box of toothpicks? Our Lady can rarely convince him to sit in the passenger seat in the car while she drives.

I agree with you Royals about the beauty of Mom’s spice cupboard. All us kids use a lot of spices because of the way Mom and Dad cooked. My most favorite thing is to go out into my garden and get the spices I need right when I need them. That is the best.

(((Yawn)))Well I think it must be bedtime now.

Tomorrow will be lots of fun. It would only be more fun if A Catty Librarian were with us also. But she is far away having her own fun.

    Night all

More to Staff: How did you convince him to hold still in a plastic bag? He doesn’t have that kind of sit-still-i-ness in him.

  114. Staff
    11:35 pm on November 26th, 2014

Thieves, In our somewhat limited experience we have found that you can’t convince Giants of anything. Candied or not. You just let them lean where they want to and home it is strong enough to hold them.

    Now really Nighty noodles.
