To Fetch A Thief: A Tiny Excerpt
“How about Peanut?” Bernie said. “Does she have any enemies?”
“Is that a serious question?”
“Not really,” Bernie said. “But if she does, look out.”
“Why is that?”
“Because an elephant never forgets.”
Whoa right there. An elephant never forgets? Had I heard that before? Couldn’t quite recall. What was Bernie saying? Not that elephants are in some way better than – ? My mind dug in its heels, wouldn’t go any further in that direction.

Chet: Elephants are in no way better than dogs. I wonder if that's true about elephants never forgetting which I've heard before. Research!

Good morning, y'all! Late night last night, but I finally caught up with all the posts this morning. I agree with PA/SQ/Admin and everybody else who loves the badges. Did I tell you that Mom laminated hers and put it on a ribbon to wear around her neck? And those are great photos of Rio and Siber-H with their caps. Any chance I could get one with an Angels hat, Staff? At least you'd only have to fit it around one ear!
3:54 am on September 25th, 2010
Oop! I meant Melanie for the hat — Staff's making the badges, and we already have one of those! Sorry!
3:56 am on September 25th, 2010
Hey Kirby. Congratulations of last night's football game. Apparently the Rockies lost and Rio is never going to watch a baseball game again…ever.
Melanie made the pictures with the caps and Staff put the pictures on the badges.

There's a new book out called The Tiger. Not sure who wrote it because it's over with Dan right now.
Here's the blurb from Amazon: . Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the taiga, John Vaillant provides an unforgettable true account of a lethal collision between man and beast in a remote Russian village during the late 1990's. At its core, The Tiger is the story of a desperate poacher who picked the wrong tiger to accost.
The tiger REMEMBERS the guy and stalks him down. When Dan was in the CIA (not for long) and then Navel Intelligence he had to learn Russian. As children we were very impressed that he could say mustard pot in Russian.
So add to never making an elephant angry, tigers.
4:14 am on September 25th, 2010
Kirby and Wöökie, need photos of you looking ahead! Then I will place the hats upon your heads!
Oh, yea, I should read the ENTIRE blurb to see that the author's name is there!!

Melanie: Can you use the one from my avatar, or is that at too much of an angle?

I thought that this photo with me in more formal wear would look good with the cap! (Using Mom's address this morning since she is tech support in the family) Wookie

Mom used to say to our girls (before I joined the family) Good Morning, Kats and Kittens! That is how I feel today, even though it is slightly inappropriate for the occasion.
It rained all night here and is still thundering. I am not a big fan of thunder, but mom loves to listen to the rain. And the big news is Fall Has Arrived in North Texas! Our favorite fall song is "September Morn", but we don't listen to it until the first day when it feels like this. Our grandpa, somewhat of a country boy used to say (I've heard) that this kind of day makes you want to slap a wildcat up side of the head. I am not sure how the wildcat might feel about that, more research may be needed.
Admin, et. al. saw our badges!!! And loves them!!! I think our exclamation mark key may be stuck!!!
Today is the second day of the Great State Fair of Texas. Mom is interested in trying the Fried Frito Pie, but not the fried beer. I am afraid that the fair is another one of those unenlightened places that prohibits our kind. hmpff

We have a funny story for you this morning (maybe not as funny as Melanie's). Barb works 1 or 2 days a week in the office of the local real estate office. We have our house on the market so we can move back closer to our family.
So yesterday Barb was at the office and this guy called and asked if he could show the house in an hour. Barb ran home and got me and took me back to the office. It was too hot to keep me in the car, so she took me into the office on my leash.
I was sitting like a good girl and a nice lady agent was giving me some pats on my head. All of a sudden the broker appeared at the top of the stairs. She is a crazy, mean and nasty lady who Barb says should be on medication and who doesn't like my
kind at all.
Well, she started yelling and screaming things like "You can't have that DOG in here, and don't let IT scratch my furniture and blah, blah. She starts down the stairs still yelling and flailing her arms in the air. I didn't know she does that stuff all the time.
Did I mention that one of the things in my genetics is that we put ourselves between our person and danger? Picture a raging bull charging at Barb and me biting it on the nose. So I jumped up and started a woo, woo, woo, woo, woo in my most menacing voice. This lady screamed at the top of her lungs and ran back up the stairs. She may have even peed her pants.
Barb was like "OMG, she has never done that before, she's really very friendly". Well she left in a hurry, and the other lady was laughing like crazy. She said "Do you think she scared Maggie?" Barb said "No, I think she was saying, "Come any closer and I will have to bite you". The lady said "Maybe we should try that some time". I was just picturing that charging bull!

Maggie: If "flying rats" recognize people, maybe "walking rats" recognize you! Maybe if you wore a mask the next time you go "ratting," the rats would come out because they wouldn't recognize you as The Great Ratter!

Melanie, Your family has such an interesting and exciting history!
6:15 am on September 25th, 2010
I just sent an email to Amazon. We shall see….
Melanie: Given his experience, I wonder what Dan would think of the tv series Rubicon.
B&M: My first reaction regarding the real estate broker was that I wish Maggie had bitten her nose. However, that would have caused worse problems given the woman's bad temper.
6:21 am on September 25th, 2010
Maggie: Is the woman Barb's boss? Or another employee? I think you were very brave to stand up to that charging bull, but I just don't want Barb to lose her job over it!
6:28 am on September 25th, 2010
Kirby: I like that photo, but I can't take it off the web site. It's too small. Can you post the photo?
6:30 am on September 25th, 2010
MagPie! Awesome! We had a puppy who went to a house with small children. That dog had not introduced to the Grandfather who decided to come for a visit and just walked in. The dog would not let the man get near the children. Didn't woo, woo, woo but just stood in front of the kids and wouldn't let him near them.
If a Newf is in your way, you don't go far. We think we could lend them out to sports teams.
6:32 am on September 25th, 2010
Now we have to add crows to the list to never make angry.
We've got ravens nesting near here. They are cool. They make some great sounds. They do not like the hawks and eagles.
6:34 am on September 25th, 2010
Kirby, Barb is admin. one or two days a week, so the broker is Barb's boss. Barb says it's better for all concerned that I let her off with a warning.
I, like Chet, am quite a good leaper, so I could have bitten her on the nose if she had kept charging at us. Bee, Barb got a little chuckle out of picturing that senario!
6:36 am on September 25th, 2010
Thanks Melanie, I like this photo, too. Mom tried to take a head-on picture of me, but I couldn't look into the camera. I think it's like Chet and the binoculars — too machine-like for me!

Barb and Maggie: SHHHHH! Ixnay on the owscray!!! Rio's got enough to connipe about without adding that to the mix!!!
6:46 am on September 25th, 2010
YIPPIE! Tip of the Hat to Melanie and Staff on their talented work on the badges. My mother is learning to live with the fact that my dirty toys are immortalized.
The Rockies could use several Nefws.
Congratulations on the win last night, Kirby. That would have been an exciting game.
6:53 am on September 25th, 2010
Melanie: When my mom was younger — much younger! — her family lived on a farm in Iowa, and they had a collie named McBrie. My mom's youngest brother is 14 years younger than she is, and one day when Michael was a couple years old he was playing in the fenced yard, until he noticed that the gate was open. He started toddling out into the farmyard, but Grandma looked out the window just in time to see McBrie run after him, gently take his hand in her mouth, turn him around and lead him back into the yard. Then she stood guard at that gate and wouldn't let him back out! We dogs are heroic!!!
6:55 am on September 25th, 2010
Maggie!!! That's my girl! Dogs know…dogs just know nasty people from good people.
Barb and Maggie? You guys aren't having to leave life in the country are you?
Dogs are smarter than elephants. IMHO
7:00 am on September 25th, 2010
Siber-H: Thanks! Dad was just telling us that our JV team had a similar situation the night before with the JV from the same school. They were losing, and all the other team needed to do was "take a knee" to end the game. But instead they tried to run the ball and fumbled. Our team recovered it, then passed for a touchdown and won the game! Before the game started last night, their head coach was talking to one of our coaches, and said he had learned something watching the JV game — just to take a knee instead of trying to run it. But I guess he didn't learn that lesson real well, because they ended up doing the very same thing!
7:03 am on September 25th, 2010
Melanie and Staff: Wonderful work on the caps and badges. I don't know how you do it, you are both so talented.
After reading the TFAT excerpt, I am so anxious to read it. I phoned the Poisoned Pen bookstore to see how soon they would send TFAT after it was signed. They said they would send it the day after.
7:07 am on September 25th, 2010
Ok Kirby, moms the word on the owscray!
Yesterday when Barb was driving to the office there was a injured crow sitting in the middle of the street. Barb stopped her car and it just sat there, so she put on her flashers and got out. It then proceeded to hop under her car. Cars were driving around her, and she couldn't reach the bird, so then she got out a window scraper and used that to push it out from under the car. She thought it was going to die, but didn't want it to get squished on the street, so she carried it over and put it in some bushes.
According to Barb's Animal Speak book, crows are the symbol of watchfullness, and often will warn other crows and even other animals of danger. They always post lookouts when feeding.
7:10 am on September 25th, 2010
Melanie: Don't worry, I can wait. I'm real good at waiting. I'll just take a nap!
7:12 am on September 25th, 2010
Kirby: What a wonderful story. It's amazing how astute dogs are.
Years ago my Doberman, Brandy, and his best friend Rocky, a German Shepherd combination, and I were at a turn out farm for Standardbred broodmares and foals. Rocky started chasing the foals which stirred up the mares. I said to Brandy, "Make Rocky stop!" Immediately Brandy ran after Rocky and prodded him back over to me. Communication.

Very handsome photo of Wookie with this Colorado Rockies cap on. With all the support the Rockies are getting from us dogs, you'd think they would start winning.
7:13 am on September 25th, 2010
Kirby, Was your collie a Lassie type collie, or a farm collie? That is another name for my kind- English Shephred, farm collie, barn collie. We were the farmer's all purpose dogs, and there are alot of stories of my ancestors saving kids, as well as biting bulls on the nose.
7:17 am on September 25th, 2010
Colorado Rockies? Whoa! I thought that C R meant Commander Rio!
7:22 am on September 25th, 2010
Siber H. If we move back closer to the kids Barb still wants to have a country property. Prices are higher back there, so she will downsize, but still wants to have the chickens. Goats are optional.
Talking about goats, Barb looked them up in her Animal Speak book. It say in part, "If the goat has climbed into your life, this is the time to begin new climbs and new endeavors. You will be able to move ahead with great surety."
7:27 am on September 25th, 2010
Maggie: McBrie was a "Lassie" kind of collie, although I never met her. She went over the rainbow bridge long ago!
Although she was heroic, she also used to drive my grandpa nuts, because sometimes when there was a big snow Grandpa would go out to take landscape photos. Bri loved to roam with him — the only problem was that he would get all set to take a photo, and she would go tramping across the newly fallen snow, leaving her pawprints right through Grandpa's carefully composed photo!
7:38 am on September 25th, 2010
Farm Dogs!…Mom is watching the National Sheepdog Finals on the internet this weekend. Unlike the Iditarod, it is free.
Maggie, maybe Rio would like to adopt the goats if you don't get to keep them. We are glad the chickens will be with you.
7:45 am on September 25th, 2010
Siber H, Is that on tv too? Barb says we don't do as well in trials as Border Collies and Aussies, because we just herd to take care of a problem and keep order. We are not driven to herd just for the joy of doing it. BBL

Goats!… No goats ever….snort!

My so much variety today. Wookie I never stop marveling at your sophisticated good looks. Kirby, never let 'em get your goat about your ears, I think they are charming. (nobody has noticed that I have rather prominent ears).
Loved Maggie's story. People "in power" sometimes need to be brought down a peg.
I am happy for all of you who have ravens and crows. All we have here are nasty disgusting grackles. Fort Worth has a full time grackle harasser who tries to convince them to stay out of the nightlife area of downtown.
Alice, you seem to be having an identity crisis today.

Oh My Gosh! We just finished reading TFAT! Mom has been stretching it out — no matter how impatient I got, Mom kept saying she had to make it last because it would be awhile before Spence would give us another one. For those of you still waiting for your copy — totally worth the wait!
Mom's right though, I'm a little sad that it's over. Sometimes it's nice to come to a series late, then you can just read one book after another, the way we did with Ingrid. Speaking of Ingrid…I don't know whether I want Spence to hurry with the next Chet book, or PA to hurry with the next Ingrid book! Maybe he can he sit in the middle of two computers and type on one with each hand!!!
12:48 pm on September 25th, 2010
Melanie: I do have a tail, and we had close to hurricane-strength winds around here!

Mom's TFAT is in PA, and won't be here until Tuesday. Curses! Usually our Amazon stuff gets shipped from Las Vegas, which takes no time at all. But this last shipment started from Delaware.
I think Mom might be sick on Wednesday.
We are also getting the Professor Layton game. We have a DS and I nap while mom plays. We also like Lorena McKennitt. A lot.

Rio,
I don't understand why they won't let you near a quilt. I am sure you would be very respectful of them. You know how much work they are. I did have to do a lot of resting, but only because my feet hurt, not because of any other issues. There is a lot of standing at a quilt show.

Staff – Mom says thanks also for the ID card. It looks fabulous.
Rio. – I definitely have my cap on for the game, and if the Rockies win tonight, I promise not to take it off for the rest of the season.

I leave for 2 measly days and it's a whole new blog. Caps and Badges! Did anyone else see Little Detective Agency on Facebook?
5:23 pm on September 25th, 2010
FK, I haven't seen it. Are we missing something?
5:31 pm on September 25th, 2010
The Librarian "liked" the page and was only the fifth one. Somebody either spammed it with an ad or it's a joke from one of Bernie's friends. So – we're not missing anything yet. Maybe we should give Bernie a case, like what's up with those Rockies?
5:35 pm on September 25th, 2010
I liked the page too. That Mike Baker is a sheep! Check out his pic. Bawahhhaaaa!
5:44 pm on September 25th, 2010

Min Pin! …Regarding Facebook, I personally do not go out there….grunt!… I was sitting on my friends lap when she checked out the Little Detective Agency page though, because I am interested in all things “Bernie Little”….heh!…We didn’t see anything of interest out there at this time and for me this just proves my point about Facebook…snort!… Very boring and not my cup of kibble….wheeze!

Melanie: Kirby and Wookie look very cool in their hats and:
Congratulations to the engaged couple. When my oldest finally got married to his long suffering significant other she chose the song, "At Last", sung by Etta James to play as they walked down the aisle

6:55 pm on September 25th, 2010
I wish the MLB had some sort of subscription service where a fan could go to sleep, and then a recording would call you as soon as there was a final score in the game/games of your choice.
I'm getting sleeeepy.

I'm back! The bad news is that the team we went to the party for lost — but the good news is that Iowa won today, beating Ball State 45-0!!! Go Hawkeyes!!! (After last weekend, we needed it!)
Melanie: Thank you, thank you, thank you for the picture. It's just fantabulous!!! I love it, but Dad not so much. He seems to think I'm his dog so I should root for those orange birds instead of the Angels. But I'd just as soon eat those orange birds as cheer for them!
Oh, and congratulations to OTAS and his SO! After looking at her website I found myself thinking that they are truly kindred spirits — I'm so glad they think so, too!
Staff: Thank you, than you, thank you for my badge. Don't worry about making one for Dad, though. (See above!)
7:03 pm on September 25th, 2010
Rio whether you like facebook or not, your friend still has a goat in her picture. What is up with that?
Have you heard that the Rangers are going to the playoffs!!!
7:05 pm on September 25th, 2010
Yippee for the Rockies!!!
Oh, and Macy, congratulations to your Rangers as well. I guess if it couldn't be the Angels in the playoffs, I'd just as soon have it be the Rangers. Sob!
7:07 pm on September 25th, 2010
Congratulations to the Rangers.
And to the Hawkeyes. You look great in your cap, Kirby.
7:09 pm on September 25th, 2010
Go Rockies!!!!! The caps did it. Wooo Wooo Wooo. We are all skipping tonight. Caps stay on for the rest of the season. Wookie
7:16 pm on September 25th, 2010
OMG! We haven't checked the blog since Friday early evening because we were playing with the new Kindle. Haven't read all the posts yet but just found out Macy's parents will be at the signing in Houston! How fantastic that Mom will get to meet another plunderer parent! Macy, tell your Mom & Dad that my Mom will have on a badge, too. Staff made her one back when the book signing was first posted and she found out one was in Houston. The bookstore (Murder by the Book) is an old fashioned, genuine bookstore but not very large so Mom plans on getting there about an hour before the signing. Last signing she went to (Lee Child) she sat on the floor.
Gotta go and catch up on what all has been posted. Mom was painting walls today (not cantalope colored, Dawson) and has just now looked at the computer.
7:34 pm on September 25th, 2010
G and BB, mom is very excited to know that she will get to meet another plunderer.
Macy out

Lol, loved the werepug!! Made my day. And congrats to your OTAS and SO. Maybe you'll be hearing the pitter pat of little two legged pups someday. That would be fun!
