This Universe: Good Enough
“Here’s a story out of Germany,” Bernie says. “Seems the cops came looking for this perp at his place in some town near Cologne. Some pal of the perp – holding the perp’s dog, key point – opened the door and said the perp wasn’t home. But then he put the dog down, and the dog – no names in the story, but possibly a Jack Russell – ran right to a little cupboard and started wagging his tail. The cops opened the cupboard and – well, you know the rest.”
I do?
Bernie gives me a look. “Kind of like us, Chet, but in an alternate universe, all upside down and backwards.”
Alternate universe? Forget about it.

Chet,
Just goes to show, your tribe is on the side of good, they just can't help it. Exception that proves the rule: Rio
Something is definitely going on. Read the last post from yesterday about Alice and Abby and add the electricity and heat going out. We have a situation here. Rio is this your doing?

Chet!….What a funny story!… Snort!… it was probably a Pug!… Grunt!… ever faithful till the end….and it would explain why the perp’s friend put him down!… wheeze!… Pugs typically weigh a ton.
Perfect!…name for the Post too…. Snort!… seems I’ve been in an alternate universe since Tuesday. …grumble..

Crap!… since I am stuck here by myself all day…snort!… I might as well answer that strange chicken’s questions…Grunt!
Dawson!…I had a plan pretty much worked out!… Grump!…it was a good plan and quite a hoot!… But!… turns out the Kats don’t have enough gray matter to go around …. SO!… plan is trashed….MUCH to my chagrin.
Fat!… I tried to work the plan around Abbie… Snort!….But her Big Butt kept getting in the way!… it just wouldn’t wor!…wheeze! …the purrrr…fect Kat for the job would be Alice!.. but we all know how that would end….Chaos!

Mollypop, I'm with you on those birds. Never did like the sneaky things. And only 2 legs, too. Wonder if they get a little pukey, like Chet, when thy're up there lying around. I just get them chased away from one bird feeder, and they fly to the other one. My duty is to keep my yard feather free, except for the chickens, of course. Although, I am not allowed in their coop, for some reason that escapes me right now. Rio, sorry you have been lonely today. Maggie
1:20 pm on February 25th, 2010
Really!?…. is this how it’s going to be again today??…. snort!… This alternate reality is for the birds!…Grunt!… LET ME OUT OF HERE!… damn!…maybe Wookie will miss me and come and find me in this dark and lonely place?…sniffle…
1:56 pm on February 25th, 2010
Lonely!?… I guess I have felt out of step with everyone since Tuesday!… Grunt!… when I am here, no one else is!… wheeze!… and then when I leave, everyone shows up!….it’s the strangest thing!…Snort! … maybe I am still reeling from the whole Book 3 being on display… Snuff!… and then Spence promising me an autographed copy!…sigh…I don’t know MagPie!…Snorkel!… I need to figure it all out soon or else!

That’s a funny story. The little guy has the potential to be a crime fighter just like Chet.
I’m off to the vet now for a routine appointment. I like going to the vet, but if mom dares to send me to a groomer–let’s leave it at–I don’t think so! I wish I had Chet’s attitude about the groomer. (SH’s mom here: I wish he did too)
What is happening with the cats? Hope everything is ok with them. Perhaps cats need a pack structure like us canines.

What do you need to figure out Rio?
2:19 pm on February 25th, 2010
Ahhh!…Stover!…I guess, and I am just guessing, I need to figure out if I am expecting too much from this whole experience each day….Snuff!…and possibly too much from the guys who visit…Snort!…. Maybe that’s it.
2:36 pm on February 25th, 2010
Rio, At least you can feel good about our guy Apolo. A First last night and then tomorrow, maybe 2 more medals. What could be better than that? Hey, any of you guys have any thoughts on how my Mom could get in line for a signed, paw-printed copy of #3? Sh says she is fine with paying for it, plus whatever S & H involved. She is not looking for a freebie. Is that anything like a frisbee? Love those things! I'm telling you, she is a total Chet groupie. Never seen her like this, at least not that I can remember. MagPie

For me, the fun of the blog is to hear from Chet each day, in between books. Sometimes it's even more fun as it was yesterday when we can try to figure out solutions to possible problems. You have great reading skills–remembering the hockey scene and finding the problem with Col. Bob…son/twin girls. There are probably other questions to think about. I still don't understand why Nance wanted to shoot/kill Chet and Bernie at the beginning of THAT. I mean, what is her motive? Were they a real threat to her then? And wasn't she in the plane with Princess when the shooting in the desert occurred? Anyway, these things are fun for me.

MagPie – You were the answer on last week's LA Times crossword puzzle!
2:44 pm on February 25th, 2010
Sorry about not checking in Commander Rio, been raining all day after all that snow. We've been slip sliding away. . . Hmm that sounds familar for some reason.
Mac slipped a bit on the ice and is limping, but his leg is not hot anywhere. All the others in the pack are keeping an eye on him.
Chet, an alternate universe does sound just a bit much. I have enough going on in this one! Just tell Bernie to keep the pizzas coming and you should be alright.
Did you all hear about the bomb sniffing British Lab who has saved lives in Afghanistan? He won the Dickin Medal for heroic animals. It's also been won by three horse and a cat. Just don't tell Chet that 32 pigeons have also won it. He might get upset.
2:49 pm on February 25th, 2010
Here's a link to Wkipedia about the Dickin Medal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dickin_Medal
I had to look it up to find out about the pigeons. Mostly WWII messenger pigeons. Pretty cool.
I notice there was a Newfoundland dog Gander who also won it.
Here he is with the Royal Rifles of Canada leaving for Hong Kong in 1941

Mollypop. Tell me more about that puzzle. Do you mean me, Maggie, the dog, or MagPie the bird.
3:05 pm on February 25th, 2010
Wow!… you guys are the best!…Snort!… I mean that from the bottom of my puggish and sometimes piggish heart!…Gruff!
MagPie!… if I could get petted by Spencer or Apolo… Snort!… it would be a very hard choice to make…
Stover!… you are completely right!… I am missing the WHOLE point here!…wheeze!… I need to start researching the whole Nance vs Chet and Bernie episodes you speak of!… Snort!Snort!…
Damn!… We loaned out book 2!… oh no! not again!…wheeze!

Rio. Just wanted to check in so you don’t feel all alone here at the blog. Nothing much to report in Chevy Chase, just mellowing out (kind of like what Chet does from time to time), although we may have a bit of snow tonight with high winds (the local broadcasters are referring to it a snow-urricane, but I think that is a bit dramatic). Hope Melanie has power back, although that generator thing sounds good. We didn’t have one when we lost power here, although one of our neighbors did. And I’d be more than willing to work with Gus and BooBear to develop a routine to get them in shape for secret missions; I’m sure we could find a lot for them to do. Wookie
3:21 pm on February 25th, 2010
MagPie – that was the actual answer. Something about a talking bird. (Stupid bird.) Mom laughed and said you were in the puzzle. Please tell me you aren't fooling about not being a bird.
3:31 pm on February 25th, 2010
I did read about the British Lab on the internet. Dogs are so heroic. I suppose the pigeons won for carrying messages. If so, I'll give them that, but I bet they had no idea what they were doing.
Molly: One can never have enough snow–Enjoy!
3:39 pm on February 25th, 2010
Wookie!… you are a sight for bugged out sore eyes!… Snort!… Nice of you to offer to help the Kats!… but I think they have their hearts set on just being by-standers…
Grunt! … I just need to be patient and see what happens, right Wookie!?…. Gruff!

Mollypop, When I was born, all the pups were named after birds, instead of colors or some other way to identify us. Like Wren, and Finch and Robin. We had a lot of fun together. I was MagPie, and that morphed into Maggie. Actually Kindred Spirit's Magnolia is my real official name, but Maggie will be just fine, thank you very much. And who wants to be named after a bird anyway? Don't get me started. I think that was Rio who started calling me MagPie again, but my memory isn't so good.
4:05 pm on February 25th, 2010
MagPie!… I knew you were a MagPie the first time I saw you!…snorkel!…heh.
Golden!… it’s been very emotional watching the Womens’ Hockey team get their Silver medals!… Snort!… they all wanted Gold so badly!… But!… Silver is awesome!!.. way to go girls!…Gruff!
4:26 pm on February 25th, 2010
MagPie – Rio was right on calling you MagPie. You've come full circle (how did he know?) and I love that name.
I know about these funny names that go on papers that were on the kitchen counter and that I ate. I was Priscilla's Pretty Pup. So then they were in my tummy and I was Mollypop. Fine with me. I know it's a fierce name.
4:35 pm on February 25th, 2010
Hi Guys – I’m back. Me and Mom are back in ski country. Mom’s all excited because some snow is supposed to be coming. I look out the window here and there’s plenty of snow, don’t know why she wants more.
Before we could leave to come here, we had to get some new bird feeders. Something about the cardinals and juncos not being happy. Stupid birds!
Siberian Husky – you would love it here.
4:52 pm on February 25th, 2010
Magpie: We have 'em up here. Once we were getting ready to cook steaks over a fire and a large magpie swooped down and took a huge steak in it's beak and tried to fly off. Lucky the steak was so big or I think we would've been minus one steak. They are so bold. My mothers name is Maggie(Margaret) It's a great name.
All the women's hockey players, Canadian and U.S, are awesome. Too bad they can't both win gold.
Had to start back to work today, the good news being that I got to start reading Book One again to Lonnie and Gord. Yeah! We are up to chapter five. I think I'll pay more attention to details, reading it out loud. Maybe develop some of those reading skills B. Stover is talking about.
Rio: thanks for answering my questions even if it was just because everyone else was gone.
5:12 pm on February 25th, 2010
Dawson!… no problem…Snort!… lots of times, I don't like answering questions…wheeze!… but today perhaps, it has helped me in a lot of ways…Grunt!…
5:28 pm on February 25th, 2010
Melanie!… don’t be worrying about me anymore!…My good Friend, Stover, has me on the right track again!… Snort!…very interesting about the 32 pigeons winning that award…Grunt!… and probably a good plan NOT to tell Chet about it….mmmmm..
[ Thank you B. Stover, for your wonderful insight, and extreme patients with me]
5:33 pm on February 25th, 2010
Mollypop, I don't know how Rio knew what my first name was. I think he has powerful psychic powers, and here he is pretending to be a couch potatoe pug. Dawson, If I had been there, I would have grabbed that steak right out of that dumb bird's beak. Of course, you wouldn't have gotten a chance to cook it. How cool is it that I have your mom's name. I am honored. Maggie, aka MagPie

Hey Rio,
I hear it's nice in Colorado. Maybe I should come visit?
Heh heh heh.

Aren't I beautiful???

OH yeah,
I'm a Samoyed! That's it. (nudge nudge wink wink)
6:22 pm on February 25th, 2010
Oh!… she does have me laughing!… Snort!…and that’s not like me!… I have to tell you before Alice makes another Big Entrance!…[snicker] Stop!Stop!….guys our 4 books finally came today!…wheeze!… I put my paws down on “The Tutor”….Grunt!…so that’s what we are starting with!… Chapter 6 so far (very fitting 6)… lovin’ it!
6:27 pm on February 25th, 2010
Hmmm,
Somehow I think this disguise is not working the way I though it would.
Drat
Back to the drawing board.
Alice

Snorkel!… You are now “A Samoyed”?… Snort!… it does rhyme with “Annoyed”…Growl!… which is what I am right now!…sheesh!… what are you up to Alice?!… always during the Olympics!…derrr!.
6:32 pm on February 25th, 2010
Oh Ho so you got some Peter Abraham's books eh?
I have been considering the Echo Fall's Mysteries. There are now three of them and the first one won an Agatha and the second one was nominated for an Agatha. As Chet would say, "It doesn't get much better than that."
They sound like Ingrid is the new Nancy Drew, and of course I would like to read those books. I guess I will have to poke a stick at the staff and get her moving on these books.
AS soon as Staff gets over her 'turf toe' she can go to Uncle Edgar's bookstore and pick them up.
6:46 pm on February 25th, 2010
Yup!… got my Mr.Good Lookin’, Charming, Abraham’s books now, right in my stubby paws!…Snort!… as we type!

6:58 pm on February 25th, 2010
Abby!… Zippy is one of our guys in the book we are reading!…Snort!… I may have leaped ahead there…Snort!… what a guy!… Grunt!… I wonder if he will have his mouth full of a pant leg by the end…. (doubtful)…very.
7:15 pm on February 25th, 2010
WOW!…. Rachael Flatt just put stars in all our eyes!…Snort!… what a thing!.. what a thing!… Grunt!… what a story!…Gosh!.. UP ALL NIGHT AGAIN!
2:04 am on February 26th, 2010
Melanie, is Mac one of the Newf pack or one of the humans in your household? Hope he is feeling better!
We haven't started looking for the other fellows books yet, but the way everyone is talking they must be hard to find??
4:35 am on February 26th, 2010
Snort!…you guys will probably have a helluva time finding them…heh!
