Good morning, everyone! Honest Abe, a really good President in a difficult time.
Loved yesterday’s trip down memory lane. Safe travels to Tupper & Gilly’s Mom.
    Enjoy your special Saturday all.

Poor old Abe wouldn’t fare very well with all of the 24/7 news and social media now. Imagine what the pundits would say about Abe’s depression and his wife’s emotional issues. Sigh.

    Good morning all.

I WOULD VOTE FOR HIM! Yes I would!

Rio, Glad you finished your book. The title reminded me of a book I read several years ago called Jump Off Creek by Molly Gloss. It is a story of a woman’s difficulties settling in Oregon in the mid 1800s. I loved it. You might put that on your to-read list.

I am going to check out The Road that was mentioned last night.

Linda, Today they might be on some meds that would help. And I wonder if some of their problems related to the death of their son. Didn’t they lose a son at a very young age?

11:39 am on May 14th, 2016 Bison, our national mammal. Why does that sound humorous?

    And cowbirds…grump

Abbie has been very upset with me, whining and complaining in the quilt room. I finally paid attention when she tried to get on the sewing table. I had put some EVIL minky fabric on her window seat in the mistaken belief that she would love the soft silky feel of it. She prefers the coarse fabric of the bag that is on the seat. I had to remove the minky. Once I did she immediately settled in on the hard stiff bag and then made a little grunt that sounded sort of grumpy.

    Some cats!

Back home from a few errands. Waiting to get the call that the pork order has been delivered to Josh and Jess. This is our pastured Berkshire pork that we ordered earlier in the spring. Humanely raised on a small farm west of here.

Tonight we are probably going to have a frost and maybe record breaking cold for May 14-15. The record is 35* in 1895. I will be covering a few plants and have brought the hanging ferns in, since we are also having 40-50 mph gusts. Why me Lord?

    He does look like AJ!

Wonder why the cowbirds are sitting on the bison’s back? Just a comfy ride perhaps? I love buffalo/bison. They are so majestic and primitive looking.

Since I recommended Jump Off Creek to Rio, I noticed another book by the author, called Falling Off Horses. It takes place in the late 30s and is the story of a young man raised on a ranch. who decided to go to Hollywood and become a stunt rider in westerns. Sounds interesting, think I will stop by the library.

Cowbirds those lazy slugs. They don’t even raise their own, they sneak their eggs into some other birds next and then take off. The Cowbird baby will break any other eggs in the nest and I have seen an harried overworked yellow warbler, IN MY OWN GARDEN, hustling back and forth trying to fill up a cowbird nestling that is twice as big as she is.

I expect they like the warmth of the bison and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few insects living in that coat that are edible to a (snort) Cowbird. Grump.

    12:49 pm on May 14th, 2016

Kelly had a cowbird in a finch nest. It didn’t break the other eggs, but it did take up most of the room in the nest, and I’m sure, over worked the poor parents. I guess you could take the egg out and dispose of it if you caught it early.

I always like to think the Mother Nature works things out for a reason, so there must be some purpose to a cowbird and to their poor parenting skills.

  16. B.Stover
    1:04 pm on May 14th, 2016

Cowbirds have that name because they are often around livestock which stir up insects that the birds can then catch.

  17. B.Stover
    1:06 pm on May 14th, 2016

Also (I’d have to look this up but I think it’s correct) because cowbirds stay around livestock (bison in early days), they moved a lot and could not, therefore, build nests of their own.

  18. B.Stover
    1:23 pm on May 14th, 2016

This is from the Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds: “It has been suggested that cowbirds became parasitic because they followed roving herds of bison and had no time to stop to next.” (Knew I had read that at some time.)

Greetings from this glorious, beautiful, awe-inspiring and Enchanted place. That’s the last time I get to say that for a while.
At the airport, through security and settled in for the wait. I decided to get here very early because my suitcase is LOADED with rocks, silver and Jewelry making supplies.
TSA hates that. They usually turn all our stuff inside out.
Today, I quietly told the screening guard that I was a jewelry buyer, and if they needed to open my bags, I needed it to happen in a private room.
Result – he just waved me right through.
Huh??? Don’t get me wrong. Very grateful. But baffled.

Staff – Alice was just asserting her Catness. Don’t give her something she didn’t ASK for. But next time you turn around, she will probably be curled up on your stash of minky.

Honest Abe. Can we say that about any of the candidates today?

I have lost track of the hours I put in for this cat rescue garage sale today. Even yesterday I was up past midnight. Plus I bought four 6′ tables plus bought and donated sodas, water bottles and cookies to sell. I probably have $300 invested and will also be buying stuff. At least all the stuff I donated to the sale is selling nicely which is good.

I am not sure I want to do this again. I remember when I was in education and trying to raise money for a club or whatever, I got to the point of just writing out a check instead of holding a fund raiser.

Good day all. I will let you know how much money is raised at the end of the day. At least the weather is gorgeous but the sun has brought out the mosquitoes too. Ouch!

BSD: the reason why I’ve only had one garage sale in my life is that even really nice things don’t get anywhere near prices I paid for them. I’d rather just give the things away to people who need or want them. When I moved from up north, I gave away almost all of my furniture. I probably could have sold it but I had used and enjoyed the pieces for a few years and figure that I got my money’s worth.

Well it looks like the garage sale made between $800-1,000. A lot was sold but a lot was left. At the end of the day we chose things to post on Craigslist or save for Christmas auction. Every one swore cold water and sodas and cookies and mini muffins would sale because it was a hot day which is why I bought the stuff. But maybe 3 water bottles and 5 muffins sold. Sigh. None of the furniture went and usually that is a desired category.

Next week I will be taking items to other non-profits for them to sell. Some things are going into the trash–not a lot but items not worth giving to other places.

    Abe Lincoln?
    I’d vote for him.

CHobbit: Raising $800. seems like a grand amount for a garage sale. There should be little bartering at garage sales for charity, in my opinion.

I’ve donated much baking in the past for bake sales but when they sell it for less than it costs to make I draw the line and just make a donation. Eliminates all that work baking and the charity gets the same amount.

I was working a fundraiser today too. A car wash for the Fort McMurray Fire and Refugee Sponsorship Group. We made $800.
It was a hot and sunny day.

Got up to 23 Celsius or 73 Fahrenheit and to be even hotter tomorrow.
