This Day In History (With Major Revision, Namely: Happy Birthday, Rio And Friend! And many, many more.

“Interested in this new movie about the Lincoln assassination?” Spence says.

“Of course,” says Admin. “Especially today – he died early in the morning of April 15, 1865. Apparently he was feeling happy for the first time in years – the outing to the Ford theater, the night of April 14, was just five days after Lee surrendered to Grant.”

“Do you think history would have been different if he’d lived?”

“No way of knowing, but he was our greatest president – no reason he would have suddenly gone mediocre. Not saying the whole Jim Crow period wouldn’t have happened, but maybe it wouldn’t have been so widespread and enduring.”

“Apparently this new movie draws parallels with the present-day controversy about civilian versus military trials.”

“That’s when I’ll go out for popcorn,” Admin says.

Welcome Audi, Rio and Wookie together (!), Sammy, Athena.

Good morning, y’all! We really want to see that new movie, but I guess I’ll have to wait until it comes out on DVD — unless Mom can sneak me into the theater in her tote bag. Hmmmmm, pondering here! Mom and Dad won’t be going today, though. Mom has the day off but Dad has to work. And tonight Mom is going to a library thing with a famous children’s author — no, not PA! Then tomorrow Mom and Dad both have to work — so much for the weekend! Then on Sunday Dad has to go to a parade at school for a teacher who is retiring. Not sure when they’ll get to see it!!!

    What movie about Lincoln?

Good morning Chet, Spence, Admin, Mollypop, Kirby and everyone.

  4. Kirby T. Penworthy
    9:15 am on April 15th, 2011

Bee: It’s called “The Conspirator,” directed by Robert Redford. It’s not so much about Lincoln as about his assasination and the events that followed, especially the trial of Mary Surratt, who owned the boarding house where the conspirators met. The movie is getting good reviews.

    Good Morning to All:

B: The movie is called The Conspirator, and is directed by Robert Redford.

Rio: May you wheeze, cough, grunt, and sneeze your way through a great day…Happy birthday! Loved your photo with your BFF!

I have the day off from work and will be bike riding through the trails of the lower Hudson Valley.

Tomorrow I am off to the Big Apple to see Rain for the third time! (A little Beatles obsessed). I am alos going to a great store called Little MissMatched where you can buy three pairs of socks that are all different and pair them in different ways.
    I’m way into funky socks!

    Good morning everyone.
Happy birthday Rio: I hope your friend is feeling tip top so that she can spoil you rotten on your special day.
I’m off to work in the never ending snow.

Or if you’re like Mom, you could buy two sets and have three matched pairs of socks! (Mom only wears mismatched socks by mistake, like when she can’t tell her black and navy socks apart and wears one of each!)

Rose: I wouldn’t say I’m a movie buff, but I do like to see a good flick now and then. Mostly I know about that “The Conspirators” because Dad is a Civil War buff, and he’s been waiting for it to come out.

Happy Birthday to Rio and Friend. Hope you both feeling tip top.

Rose, Barbs’s grandduaghters, Baye and Lily, have socks from MissMatched. They are really cute, and a very practical idea as well. Not sure if they went to a store or bought from a catelog.

Dawson, We don’t have snow here, but it is in the 40s and very windy. Still coming from Siber’s direction. Should improve by Sunday.

    Kirby:

The Professor and I enjoy good movies as well. Unfortunately, there haven’t been many good ones out this season, so we haven’t been to the movies too much this year. Think I’ll take your advice and buy two sets.

B&M: They are very cute! I bought a set recently that had guitars on them (The professor plays guitar…my props to him). They have a great pair of skyscraper socks. Since I’m a New Yorker, I’ll have to have those.

  15. Kirby T. Penworthy
    9:43 am on April 15th, 2011

Rose: You’re right — Mom and Dad haven’t been to too many movies this year. It’s funny how people like/dislike movies. Mom and Dad went to a movierecently and really liked it. Then my girl and her boyfriend were talking about a movie and how much they hated it — turned out it was the same movie! Mom and Dad couldn’t believe that my girl hated it, and my girl couldn’t believe that Mom and Dad liked it!

Good Morning! I’m just catching up on yesterday’s posts. Happy Belated Birthday, Melanie! And Happy Birthday, Rio! I hope your friend is feeling better!

I am tickled pink because SPQA said that I was great. I wonder if that is the same think as blushing? Because that is kinda, sorta what I’m doing.

I wish everyone could be with me right this minute as I watch the sun rise over Puget Sound. It is really quite lovely.

Wolfie: It was “Morning Glory” with Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton, about a struggling morning news show. I just looked it up and one site that combines viewers’ and critics’ reviews gave it 6.5 out of 10 stars, which makes it slightly better than average. But Mom and Dad liked it.

Maybe you’d like to blur over to Little MissMatched with me tomorrow and help me pick out some socks…5th Avenue and 46th Street. I’ll bring my tote and I could sneak you into Rain too….

Melanie – if you are over your birthday cake hangover, be sure to look at today’s local paper. There is an article about a new bus line from here to YSAS – tickets are between ONE DOLLAR and about $6.50. We could see YSAS A LOT more, maybe….

“Morning Glory” was one of the movies on the bus to NYC. Pretty good. Though in my way of thinking, HF in anything I’m going to watch.

Rose, Since Baye and Lily are still kids, they got socks that are bright colors and either stripped or poka dots. The got 3 pair, same colors, but slightly different in each pair. Nice thing is, if you lose one, you can still put 2 more together.

We are almost at 50 posts already and it’s just noon.

Barb was trying to explain the Wednesday dinner parties to her daughter and she didn’t get it. She said “Do you all pretend you are sitting around a table talking?”. Well, not exactly like that. Maggie was running around the yard with Gilly chasing squirrels, too, and there was drinking and dancing and…. “Oh, I see.” We just stopped trying to explain.

Hey, hey peeps! My mom is home! What a wonderful surprise. Those irritating late nights in her busy place paid off in a Friday afternoon off. She is skipping. Well, no, not really, since I am sitting on her lap getting ready to snooze. She said it was sunny in Lansing and she listened to some Lynard Skynard, Billy Joel and Elton John on the way home with the sunroof open. Then she got home and it is very windy here on the west side of the mitten. I don’t know or really care, as long as I can nap on her lap everything is tip-top in my world.

Mom is home from work but she missed all the great weather we had all day. It is now very very windy and getting cold. Poor mom.
Did you all see that the blog got a “Major Revision”? Wow Rio is sure important around here.
B&M yes it was us that said Mom really wants chickens so she has her own eggs, but she always glares at us and says it is impossible. We think it would be great to have our own chickens. And yes, T&G, that would be a great answer for Siber-s mom to use.
Sibes have nothing against chickens. We really love the taste.

Macy, we have a tree that lost 1/3 of its top to wind last year. That was later in the year that it was struck by lightening so it was very weak at that point. It was a really tall old spruce tree. Sad isn’t it.

Idea!….Here is something that crossed my mind last night but we went to bed to early to post about it….snort!…. Do you think there are any possibilities of selling the cookbook, once it is finished of course, to raise money for Snowhook Kennels?…cough! …Just tossing out an idea…sniff! …I mean if we all contributed our very best recipes, that would be a substantial book, in my opinion….sniff!

I know how to collect recipes, but how does one go about putting a cookbook together? Anyone have any experience doing one for an organization- sports team, church group, social group, etc? I have purchased a few over the years, but never was involved in producing one. I will check with my d-i-l who is very good with a computer and scrapbooking, to see if she any ideas.

Riö, I not sure but I think we could put it up as an ebook for Kindle inexpensively. Not sure how that would work, but someone here but up a link to an article by two authors who were talking about ebooks sales. That would be cool to send profits to Snowhook.

Did you hire a student Pug to pose for the cake or did Balloon Butt come to your door and ask for a job?….heh!….I’m with Zoe all the way! I would LOVE to see Clarkson in a Men In Black III movie…snorkel!… You know I love that guy, and I just want him to ‘break through’ so badly….sniff! ….I’ve been waiting for Damages to come out so I can look for him there which is one of our favorite dark, dark lawyery type shows….chorkel!

The Google blogspot publishes items on a blog both in paperback version and in hardcover. Cost would depend on length. I can publish my blog in paperback version with pictures on front and back cover for under $15 per copy. We could get recipes together and then consider opening a group blog. After that see what publication would entail.

On a totally different subject, we had to take Water for Elphants back to the library today w/o finishing it, as there was a waiting list. Liked it so far, but found some passages about animal cruelty a little hard to read. Got to where they just acquired the elephant. Should we finish it or not?

Also, did anyone read Started Early, Took My Dog, by Kate Atkinson? If so, is it worthwhile? It is a new book, just out in 2011.

Rose! OMG I LOVE the missmatched socks. I have a wish list of over 80.00 already. Someone talk me down. Yikes.

    Hiya Bear Spirit, I knew.
I have been explaining it for 3 months. The real story is that Saturday the 16th is Emancipation Day in Washington D.C. only. But because it is a weekend day the ‘observed holiday’ moves to Friday the 15th. And with Friday off in Washington D.C. the final tax date moves to the next workday. Monday the 18th. More than you wanted to know eh?

Bee – thanks for the info on knights. Here’s another theory – countries that have resisted immigrant contact have maintained the purest forms of language – countries with a greater influx of foreign languages coming in tend to “flatten” out as new accents, dialects and idioms came into the predominent language base. (Sorry Plunderers – this is a discussion from Bee’s Blog – its a fascinating place, check it out)

Mary posting now. We are in Seattle now, and are going out to dinner at the Space Needle. They have really cool shops for replacing windshields here in the rainy city. I know this because my husband broke ours this morning. (Long story.) So he stuck some masking tape on it and was going to drive all the way home with a broken windshield. (The shattered area was bigger than a basketball!) So I got on my ipaw and found a shop that was able to take care of it this afternoon. Sheesh!

So, we are all fixed. We drop our friends off at SeaTac tomorrow afternoon and will start the long drive home.

T&G: I like your extended theory. Here’s another example of your theory: After the Norman Conquest (1066) English was, of course, influenced by French. The language shows the class structure. The word “pork” is from the French. (The conquerors did the eating.) The word “pig” is from the Old English. (The conquered did the raising of animals and the cooking.)

When Barb got home today she saw a bunch 8-10) shingles laying on the front porch. They had blown off the house in the 40-50 mph winds today. Oh another fun day in the country!

Rio, You are right, that is one of her books, but not sure we are going to get into this one. Slow starting, and it’s in England, so many of their police terms are unfamiliar.

Talking about Aboriginal racism, we watched a movie/documentary several years ago, title was something like Following the Rabbit Fence. It was a true story of 3 young Aboriginal girls in the 1930s who were taken away from their home by the English and put in a school. Basically, the English were trying to destroy their way of life. They escaped and walked hundreds on miles back home, following this rabbit fence. Liz, do you know the story?
