Gooood morning everyone! Mom thought new cover had grey title but WE told her it is purple. Always find this version of Chet’s ear a little disconcerting (our dime store word for the day). And would you look at the water in the background! Mmmm…where oh where?
8:52 am on May 7th, 2013
We like it for the most part. Water is supposed to be the bayou isn’t it? Not sure about the white ear.
Good morning everyone. Nice sunny day here. Things are sprouting in the garden – arugula, mesclun mix and beets. A couple of onions are peeking out too.
8:59 am on May 7th, 2013
Maggie: Is it really toady? Whoo hoo yodel howl yip bark!
9:17 am on May 7th, 2013
Thank you, yes I am 4 years old today. Jack and Lyla are coming over later and will sing Happy Birthday to me. Barb is stopping at the butcher shop and getting something special for me. Not sure what, but it will be good!
9:25 am on May 7th, 2013
Happy Birthday Maggie!!!
9:32 am on May 7th, 2013
Have a good night at the Maynard Library, Spence.
Paws crossed no one throws anything other than good questions your way.
Riö: Now what was it you wanted to ask?
9:38 am on May 7th, 2013
Happy day for Maggie.
I love the cover art. It always bothered me that Chet is described as having one white ear and it was never drawn that way.
In honor of Lady’s passing, I am going to donate $50 to the Have Harness Will Travel Fund. I think it is a way to recognize my very own ‘sled dog’ (who didn’t have a sled or a musher).
I am off to school to cook breakfast for 50 staff as part of Teacher Appreciation Week.
9:38 am on May 7th, 2013
Chet is wonderful no matter what color his ears are.
Here’s a link to the geographical term “sound.” There are quite a few in the United States.

Good morning all.
9:40 am on May 7th, 2013
Happy birthday Maggie.

The sixth C&B novel is set in Louisiana. (The summary is on Amazon.com.)
Rio: Please check your email in a moment.
10:02 am on May 7th, 2013
Happy Birthday, Maggie!
Great idea, C.Hobbit!
10:12 am on May 7th, 2013
MagPie, happy happy Birthday!
10:14 am on May 7th, 2013
B: Oh, as in Place. We were thinking more in terms of the other kind that one hears with their ears (obviously too early here. heh)
Looking at the list, Norton Sound leaped off the page. We remember well the adventures our Intrepid Team had there.
10:15 am on May 7th, 2013
Good Morning.
CHobbit: That is a fantastic idea! I’m guessing Lady was a Siberian Husky or a Malamute.
Happy Birthday, Maggie!
10:16 am on May 7th, 2013
B. What a wonderful idea! Contributions to Snowhook in Memory of Lady. Count us in also.
10:19 am on May 7th, 2013
Thank you for all the good wishes.
C Hobbit, what a nice tribute to your Lady. I bet she is learning to be a sled dog right now. I am sure she has met up with a couple of the Snowhook professionals and they can show her the ropes (or harnesses).
10:40 am on May 7th, 2013
Nice Picture…Lady running with the Team.
11:01 am on May 7th, 2013
C.Hobbit, very sorry to hear about Lady. We didn’t get to check the blog yesterday and just read the news. We will also make a donation for the Have Harness Will Travel fund. (Rio, an email coming at you soon).
Happy b-day, Maggie!! And we’re sorry we missed some other special days!
Rose, feel better soon. Mom and Dad are still talking about going to Alaska for the start of the race next year!!
11:14 am on May 7th, 2013
I LOVE Chet’s white ear. Finally . .
Spencer, please let us know what the three “S”s are.
I am at my mobile device right now. For those of you at your large computers I don’t know if this link will work.

11:17 am on May 7th, 2013
Lauing here. Deb was just telling me she was going down the hill and locked her door. As she drove away there she saw a red squirrel trying to GET OUT.
It took thirty minutes to get the squirrel out.
11:34 am on May 7th, 2013
Happy Birthday Maggie. I’m sure your treat will be spectacular.
I was going to offer to do a contribution to Snowhook in memory/honor of Lady, but I see that Wookie’s Mom already beat me to the punch.
Great baseball tonight, with some interblog rivalries at stake. Yankees versus Rockies and Tigers versus Nationals. Yankees and Rockies and Tigers, oh my!
11:40 am on May 7th, 2013
RIO! quick, like a little pug, check your SDD. I hope you won’t find any of my meds there.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Maggie!!!!
Wookie’s Dad: (whispering, many donations are coming in on Lady’s behalf)
11:41 am on May 7th, 2013
BTW: I’m so happy Chet got his white ear back!
12:21 pm on May 7th, 2013
Us too, Rose.
12:22 pm on May 7th, 2013
Gus & BooBear: Thanks for thinking of me. I am sure once I have been acclimated to all these new meds I am taking, I will be back to normal.
I highly recommend that Iditarod trip! In fact, if all the stars align properly, Griizz and I will be going back next year. It would be so cool to meet your mom and pop. Flights can actually be booked already. Carefull with Chicaago stop overs….your mom and pop should defintely not be staying in the Ashtray Inn….
12:23 pm on May 7th, 2013
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAGGIE!
Here’s the link for those on desktop computers . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?client=mv-google&gl=US&hl=en&v=ceYjg1dy-h0&nomobile=1
We have to replace the play yard fence. I took Zoë over to one that I thought would match the age of our 200 year old farmhouse. She liked it. She’s went down the hill today. She’s talking to a fence guy and for someone who will paint our fender and not just say “you have to put a new one on”. Jeeze Louise!
12:23 pm on May 7th, 2013
O’Howlers, Chet just isn’t Chet without that white ear.
12:24 pm on May 7th, 2013
A Louisana setting for The Sound and the Fury will be fun. We like the cover for the book.
Happy Birthday to a very pretty girl…Maggie!
Bear, oh, Bear, What about Puget Sound?
Great idea this morning to send a donation to the Have Harness Will Travel Fund in honor of Lady. I will send an email to the pug soon even if he is mad at me. Eeeek, What did I do?…I just stated some baseball stats.
12:26 pm on May 7th, 2013
B.Stover, I looked at your link. I have been in, on or by nine of those Sounds. Cool.
Also Gracie has to soak her paw in Epson Salts. She is doing better. The V E T thinks that the combination of meds, poultices and acupuncture drew what ever was causing the infection out. The last place (which la vet had to lance) was on the bottom of her paw.
12:28 pm on May 7th, 2013
It’s no fair that Spence won’t be at BookExpo this month. I could have had an entire summer of bragging rights like I did last year.
On the other hand, there could be galleys still. Keeping fingers and paws crossed.
12:29 pm on May 7th, 2013
C. Hobbit, though I can not make a donation at this time in Lady’s name, know that Patsy is up there running with her. I bet that at the Rainbow Bridge Patsy can keep up with her.
12:41 pm on May 7th, 2013
Melanie: Who is Deb and was the red squirrel in the vehicle or the house? Yikes!
12:52 pm on May 7th, 2013
Macy’s Mom: I love the picture of the Great Blue Heron that you posted last night. Where did you see it?
12:56 pm on May 7th, 2013
We are going out on a limb: The Sound and the Furry cover is our very favorite of all the C&B covers. Ithasa lot to do with Chet’s white ear, and a lot to so withBayou Country.
And we don’t agree that “Sound” in the title has to do with a body of water. It is just a play on Faulkner’s novel, which took place in the same section of the country. Was that named for an actual sound?
1:19 pm on May 7th, 2013
Siber-H: Not Seeing our Sound for the Many waters.
1:21 pm on May 7th, 2013
Where are the Royals?
1:28 pm on May 7th, 2013
B.Stover, Deb is Jesse (our go-to guy)’s mother. Jesse has a severely injured spine and is working with the Docs to try to fix it.
The Red Squirrel was in the HOUSE.
The Royals’ Mum is extremely tired. Instead of the rest she thought she would have with the Storyteller in Rehab, she had to be there everyday. Now that he is home he needs a lot of help. He is doing great, but still he can’t move without a brace. He is getting a nurse and the OT person said that he didn’t need her. He does need the PT person but that hasn’t started as of yesterday.
She is also getting ready for a show on Friday.
1:30 pm on May 7th, 2013
You are right Bear, we haven’t heard from T & G at all today. Hope all is well and they are just busy.
Barb got back from the butcher shop and brought me a foot long beef marrow bone, my favorite! As soon as it is defrosted I get to take it out into the back yard. Yum!
Barb said she will make a small contribution to the fund in honor of Lady and for my birthday. Money is tight since Barb is fully retired and she just got her real estate tax bill. It went up $600 from last year which we were not expecting. Our taxes are actually $1,600 higher on this little subdivision house than they were on our 5 acre place in the country with a bigger house and a barn.
1:38 pm on May 7th, 2013
The title of Faulkner’s novel is a quotation from Macbeth: “Life…is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” Rather a dim view of “life” but Macbeth says it just after he hears of Lady Macbeth’s suicide. It’s a play about the destruction of ambition.
In Faulkner’s novel each section is told by a different narrator. The first narrator is Benjy the “idiot” or mentally retarded brother. The second and third sections are told by two other Compson brothers, Quentin and Jason. These three sections are narrated in interior monologues. The fourth and final section is third-person narration and is about Dilsey the family’s black cook. All four sections are basically the same story: about the Compson sister Caddy.
Faulkner’s novel is set where most of his works are set: Jefferson County (in reality Oxford), Mississippi. I think that in the play, Macbeth, “sound” refers to something heard.
1:38 pm on May 7th, 2013
Macy’s Mom, here is a picture OTAS took right beside our house.
Story: The Pack and I went out for their time in the stockade before we went to bed. Beautiful night, warm, a little humid, the frogs were frogging, the insects were insecting, the stars were starring . . We walked over to the far side of the stockade when there was a ghostly like sound from a tree, the rush of wings and three gray ghosts passed over us. The Pack sounded the alert! We all dashed into the house. Safe!
In Virginia where I lived Great Blue Herons were called Grey Ghosts. I now know why.

1:43 pm on May 7th, 2013
Let me rephrase: Macbeth is a play about the destruction of lives that is caused by misplaced ambition.
1:48 pm on May 7th, 2013
“Grey ghost”…I like that. The heron is so majestic.
1:52 pm on May 7th, 2013
Melanie: I forgot that you had mentioned Jesse’s mother before. I hope Jesse gets better soon.
2:01 pm on May 7th, 2013
Faulkner called his novel, The Sound and the Fury, a “son of a bitch” (hope I can say that without being moderated) mainly because the first section is so difficult. Benjy’s memories are connected to images or smells so the section is not in linear order. I once had a student who put the chapter in linear order.
2:33 pm on May 7th, 2013
I hate those beautiful Blue Herons. They would come to my koi pond to try to get a snack. I had fishing line around the two open sides of the pond so they couldn’t walk in. The feel of the line against any tall bird’s legs will stop them because getting tangled would mean death. Instead the bird would sit on the roof of my house and I would squirt him with a hose.
3:00 pm on May 7th, 2013
I had never seen a Heron until I moved south. Scared the crud out of me. We live right near a lake, so they are in the yard constantly. Finn ignores them even though he likes to go swimming with the other ducks and geese.
3:02 pm on May 7th, 2013
I can just see Mollypop’s Mom spraying the heron with the hose. The info about the line against the bird’s legs is interesting.
3:18 pm on May 7th, 2013
Rose!…Checked and back attcha’…snort!
3:28 pm on May 7th, 2013
Chet’s memories are not always in linear order, right?
3:47 pm on May 7th, 2013
Barb: Right.
3:49 pm on May 7th, 2013
Yet MPM loves stinky old groundhogs. Go figure.
4:17 pm on May 7th, 2013
B Stover, the Blue Heron was at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute at Port Aransas . They have all kinds of birds that have been injured or oiled, and are nursing them back to health.
Here was in interesting display, in light of the Chukchi dogs in the Iditarod. They have students up there studying it.

4:28 pm on May 7th, 2013
Annddd another bird. This one was a little skittish, so I could not get too close.
4:36 pm on May 7th, 2013
Chukchi….That is where us Sibers come from.
That bird is taller than my mom.
4:38 pm on May 7th, 2013
Macy: Love your mom’s Bird Photos!
5:09 pm on May 7th, 2013
Macy’s Mom: That institute would be so interesting to visit. Let’s see….
5:41 pm on May 7th, 2013
Woo hoo! I’m getting a kat! My two-legged says BlueKat coming to Alaska doesn’t not mean that BlueKat is coming to live with me, me, me. I tend to disagree with her—mostly on principle, but also because I want a kat of my very own.
Happy birthday to Maggie!
Thank you for your contributions to the Have Harness, Will Travel fund. My four-legged says she heard from the other side of the Bridge. Lady won points with Fargo when it be came evident she liked to take corners really tight—one of his favorite things.
5:57 pm on May 7th, 2013
O’Howlers, Molly’s mom takes me on walks and we go around sniffing out the groundhog holes. They’re not stinky at all. They smell pretty darn good to me.
6:32 pm on May 7th, 2013
Sam, those hogs are nasty. The only good hog is a dead hog in our book. Same goes for raccoons, squirrels, bunnies, possum, rats, mice….well, you get the picture.
6:44 pm on May 7th, 2013
Correction! I’m getting two kats! Gus and BooBear are coming to live with me, me, me!
7:08 pm on May 7th, 2013
Spence: I love the newest cover art for The Sound and the Furry.
Happy Birthday Maggie!
MacyMinPin: I’m enjoying your vaca pictures.
OleyHowlers: So relieved that the baby’s operation was sucessful.
Terry: Yes! Get some galleys. I’m pulling for you because it’s no fair you won’t see Spence at the Book Expo and have those bragging rights. An ARC would give you bragging rights galore on this blog.
Blue Cat: Gasp! Is is true? You’re going to Alaska?
CHobbit: I know you and Lady shared some wonderful times together. Your donation to the harness fund in her honor is a fine tribute.
Hope those with sore paws are healing.
7:10 pm on May 7th, 2013
Fellow Sibers, You forgot skunks in your list of critters that need to be eliminated.
7:26 pm on May 7th, 2013
Right Dawson, and ARC would give Terry bragging rights AND everyone would be jealous and try to bribe him to see it.
Hmmm, actually that sounds like a win win situation. 🙂
Tomorrow and Thursday are supposed to be cloudy and rain showers. I can’t believe I’m saying that we need the rain. Very dry here. Red Flag Alert.
I wouldn’t mind some inside time. Love working in the garden, but I do tend (snicker) to overdo.
7:27 pm on May 7th, 2013
Siber-H, they also forgot chickens.
7:28 pm on May 7th, 2013
You also didn’t mention chickens. Hope that is a good sign. June is just around the corner.
7:38 pm on May 7th, 2013
The Texas Parks and Wildlife folks don’t want to waste sign space, so…

You might think it was the only tree around.
7:40 pm on May 7th, 2013
Chickens? You guys can’t go around chasing chickens because that’s our friend Peaches. You can’t chase good old Peaches.
7:49 pm on May 7th, 2013
7:51 pm on May 7th, 2013
Melanie: Yes! I am first in line for talking Terry out of any potential ARC of The Sound and the Furry.
MacyMinPin: I wanna see the Big Tree! Please mommy, please! I wanna see the Big Tree!
7:53 pm on May 7th, 2013
Wow, spring has sprung up here for sure. 40 today and it is supposed to be in the 40s and 50s all week. Only tonight and tomorrow has freezing temps at night. Finally!
Yesterday I had no hot water. Today the plumber came out: the circulating pump on the hot water tank is kaput. They very seldom go out as they last
20-30 years. $300 later… Last week was $550 for a new dishwasher. Paws crossed that nothing else goes wrong. This is such a great house, it is like it is throwing a tantrum over me wanting to leave.
8:01 pm on May 7th, 2013
(Whispering) There are a bunch of others we didn’t name for fear of offending some of youse on this here blog.
8:08 pm on May 7th, 2013
The Howlers are barbarians. Pffft
8:08 pm on May 7th, 2013
CHobbit: My dad’s words of wisdom regarding home ownership…You have to be 1 of 2 things. Rich, so you can hire someone else to fix the problem, or handy, so you can fix it yourself.
8:10 pm on May 7th, 2013
C.Hobbit, we understand here at the Pack’s house. The oil tank in the basement sprung a leak. The guy looking at it said, new pad, new line, new oil tank. We thought we had it covered with insurance, but the insurance will not cover the full cost. We will have to fork over a grand.
Zoe said it’s good that we’re replacing the tank. She thinks it’s older than she is.
Our river is supposed to have gold flakes in it. When it gets warm, I might have to spend my free time panning for gold just to pay for the furnace, the car, the . .
Nothing like an old historic house!

RIO! Have any calculations been done for Have Harness, Will Travel?
8:14 pm on May 7th, 2013

For the Plunderer Geeks! “Two Months As An Icebreaker” Though this takes place in the southern part of the world, I once again am amazed that AJ makes it through the sea ice.

Mom and I finished The Secret Keeper last night. It was good. We were up very late because we couldn’t stop until the end.
8:30 pm on May 7th, 2013
Buddy, that can be dangerous. You just have a few more chapters, then a few less chapters . . All of a sudden it’s 3 am.
I have just bought my sunscreen for the summer. I would go and buy it, but the store is 90 minutes away. Sooooo, I bought it on line.
Time to shut up shop down here on the first floor.
8:46 pm on May 7th, 2013
Chickens!! How could we leave out chickens. They are tastier than skunks.

9:22 pm on May 7th, 2013
That tree is magnificent.
9:23 pm on May 7th, 2013
Love the tree. It has character.
Peaches – Barb saw her yesterday. She is living at Kelly’s SIL’s parents’s farm. As soon as Barb said Chick, chick, chick, she came right over and wanted to be picked up. She is 4 or 5 years old now and still remembers her early months. And they say chickens are dumb. Don’t believe it!

Hi, Dawson. Rio isn’t allowed out of his yard; I’m not allowed out of my house. The parental units, however, decided now’s the time for a cruise of the inside passage in Alaska. Unfortunately they won’t be near Snowhook or CHobbit. Someday I’ll make them take me!me!me! to Willow.
Macy – cool pictures, kiddo.
‘Night all.
9:44 pm on May 7th, 2013
BluKat!…My friend has been on that cruise before and she says it is absolutely wonderful…snort!…Those guys will have an amazing time, if they picked a reliable cruise line that is…heh!heh!

BlueCat: I’ve not been but have heard that is a fantastic cruise.
Lucy Lou! Leave the baby possum alone!

Jaxon, the Newf Pack is surrounding you with love and protection. (They are trying not to drool too much). Sleep tight little one.
I am also hitting the hay. Well, to tell the truth, I’m picking the hay out of my bed before I get in. Some lovely Newf brought in the hay on HIS rear and got on my bed. Washing the sheets tomorrow. Sigh.

I am back from quilting evening with my friends. Also back from Menards where I bought lumber for the garden, and at Mr.Staffs request I got an umbrella for our new east deck.
AANNNNDDDD I picked up two huge bags of dog coats for Snowhook. Now all I have to do is stuff them into a box and send them north to Alaska.
I had to explain how I got into all the Snowhook stuff too. Mr.Husky, your name came up. Yours too Rio. And Rebecca and Whitey Lance.
Night all.
