The Nation Within (More)

“What’s up?” says Spence.

“I’ve been trying to find out some sort of accurate population count on the number of dogs – and while we’re at it, cats – in the USA but I can’t seem to come up with anything definitive,” Admin says.

“Maybe someone out there can help,” says Spence.

While we’re at it, cats? Did I hear that?

I can only say that it is far too early in the day to think about numbers. (Chet: I heard that also!)

    Good morning all.

I did a quick look up of “licensed dogs in USA”. I thought that would be more precise. Needless to say, it wasn’t. Each site was different. Will do a longer site when I come back from down the hill. At this point we’re one of the 12% of the 39% of households with dogs. That’s because we have three or more dogs. They didn’t have a percentage for 9 pet dogs! So let me try to calculate . . . what the heck is 12% of 39%?

Hmmm. . No caffeine yet . . . what the heck should mean: x =
    12% of 39%, wait I have to pull this up from 25 years ago . . .

I think I divide the 12 into the .39 and not add the 25 because that’s a different equation. Trail run here . . Nope it’s the other way around.

    X = .12/.39
    X = 3% (or so)

Wow, that took my brain way back in time!
Let’s see that means we are in 3 percenters of dog partners (a good company) of Dog Partners to three or more dogs which includeds OleyHowlers, Bella, Kirby T (for now) and I think Macy.

    Did I miss anyone?

Miz Melanie – I may not be the smartest ole hound in the pack, but down here, 12% of 39 is 4.68.
Might be different up North I have found a lot of things are.

Melanie divided 39 by 12 instead of multiplying. It seems to be 4.68 in Illinois too.

Dear Herbs, I did notice on one of the sites that people tend to have more kats when they have kats than when they have dogs. I think it was 1.7 dogs per family and 2.something kate. Can’t remember though. Now working on my coco.

Dear Mr. Redbone Hound. You are correct in that math, but I was doing 12% of 39%.

Good morning, y’all! Mom’s party went well yesterday. The cupcakes were a hit, although Mom did ask everyone to be brutally honest and the general consensus was that they could use more vanilla. So she’s going to double the vanilla for the wedding, and we’ll post that recipe if it turns out O.K. The young man whose parents hosted the party said they were “awesome,” so Mom left him some extras!

As for the numbers of dogs and cats in the country, doesn’t that change on a regular basis? I mean, look at Snowhook — they just added two to their population. (And maybe more if AJ doesn’t notice!)

Us? Yeah, we’re in that 12 percent of 39 percent. And I’m beginning to wonder just how long “for now” is. Dad was saying the other day that when my girl goes back to school next semester she’ll be staying with someone she used to work with, so Those Girls might be staying with us even longer. “For now” is sounding like a very loooooong time. Carpola!!!

Change of plans here. Dan is in Atrial Fibrillation again and the medications are not controlling it. I was going to take him to his cardiologist but when we called this morning and told them what was going on, they asked that he go to the ER. This is so he can get the correct tests done today instead of waiting a couple of days.

Zoë has taken him in; she does not like me going to the ER. But if this takes awhile, she will come home and I will pick him up.

Needless to say this has been the weekend from CARPOLA. But Franklin is better and hopefully Dan will be better soon.

Still trying to figure out what is going on with my percentage of the percentage. My brain has not kicked in today.

B: Publishing the Cookbook – hmmm…liking Rio’s idea of adding more recipes and pictures (what would this entail?)
Barb&Magpie: Speaking of which – don’t stress – we can figure this out together. Wookie had some ideas as I recall?

    Hello all,
Mom is home with us today. Reason: another vet emergency for Shiek. He had a big guppy hole in his chest. But Meashka watched very closely how the nice girl vet cleaned it and stitched it up. If it happens again, she is sure she can handle it.

Hi to Franklin. Glad you are feeling tip-top again, Dude.
Hoping for Dan to feel tip-top very soon. Speaking of Dan, we are loving White Wings but Mom has been so busy getting ready for the Family Reunion she has not had time to read it in the past week. So she says to apologize to Bear for the delay in sending it off.

Sam, what a fantastic cute picture of you and your girl! We thought it was Adelina. Glad you told us that is your girl.

We have never found Eyes of the Dragon yet and have looked for it, but I’m glad you reminded us.

The name “ammo” would be the kind of name some gangbanger would give his pitbull. It would be okay for a military or police dog, though.

  47. OleyHowlers
    12:49 pm on September 19th, 2011

Bear, we think Shiek ran into a fence post during the night. He is missing one eye from an accident when he was 20, so you can see how that could happen.
The vet who was here is a new associate, and she is a young woman who just graduated from Vet school. That made Mom nervous, and is part of the reason Meashka felt obliged to make sure she did everything right. The young woman turned out to be quite the seamstress. Mom and she talked about life expectancy of horses. She said the mean age (horses can be mean??? really???) is about 25, but Arabs live much longer. She thinks the average age for an Arab is about 45 !!!! And, she had a 48-year old Arab brought in for a minor eye issue. He was still going strong! Shiek is 30, so that made Mom very happy.

Siber, is the book at Amazon illustrated like ours? There are beautiful pictures in our book, especially those of Frisky.

umm, no, Fellow Sibers. It is a mass market paperback. That must have been why we didn’t order it before. We are going to go ahead and order the paperback, and you can tell us what Frisky looks like. I’m thinking that maybe she looks a bit like Meashka. That will work.

    They have some beautiful names.
Then there were the names that got me laughing . . .

Nasa: because “he was out of this world and sometimes it was ‘Houston, we have a problem'”.

Blade: “I chose this name for my husky because when I grew up I was scared of vampires and I got a dog and named him Blade to protect me. I know a little silly but he is my big baby and I love him. So I highly recommend this name.”

Breeze: “She is here on moment and gone the next!”

Halo: “His zorro eye mask reminds me of a the expression ‘halo having slipped’ which matches his personality completely.”

Romanoff: “Russian and a pun.” (took me a minute to get that one)

Mozart (Mo): “When Mo howls (and he does it a lot!) it sounds like he’s singing.”

Melanie, that link didn’t work right. At the top of the page it says Not Found, and then lists all sorts of names, but Siberian Husky is not among them. It has Eskimo Dogs, and we thought that was what you meant, but those names weren’t anything like the ones you list, which are great. We especially love Romanoff (LOL LOL) and Mozart.
Take a look at this site, that Mom uses for Sibe (Russian) names:

Netflix, as you all know, has divided up their streaming video and dvds. They just announced they will also be using two different websites in the near future. Qwikster for the dvd rentals and the original Netflix name will be used for streaming video. Anyone who has both will receive two different bills.

    Are Sibers able to leap?

I remember seeing Mikhail Baryshnikov in “Don Quiotex”. He was AWESOME! At one point he did a series of leaps around the stage (to impress the female lead) each one higher than the last. Then when she paid him no attention, he walked off FLAT FOOTED! Wow, what a dancer.

GREAT NEWS! Dan is on his way home!

The problem? The doctor who is not his regular doctor WAY OVER MEDICATED HIM!

Zoë and Dan are furious. All of this should have been handled on Friday when Dan’s download from his pacemaker got to the doc’s office. But NOooo, they didn’t look at the history of what was going one, just one day and doubled his medication.

So good to hear Dan is o.k. Docs are do bad nowadays. All those medical records, yet they don’t look at them. Similar thing happened to Mom once. She always has really really low blood pressure. But she went thru a short time frame when she was exhausted from working on u-know-who’s campaign. Afterward, she felt like her heart was racing a bit. Went to the doc and he put her on blood pressure m-e-d ! She started coughing continuously. When she went back, the older, wiser doc realized that the new guy did something stupid.

Melanie, Misha is no longer with the pack physically (altho he is with his beloved Sasha in spirit). Misha is not to be confused with Meashka, who came with that name, within a month of Misha leaving us.

Here are the names so far: Kaz, Luka, Mozart, Romanoff. Mom sent a sort-of angry email to that rescue for taking so long. Our vet has not even been called yet! Did we tell you that we had to give references, besides our vet? Mom gave them the Executive Director of the Humane Society, our horse vet, our X-state rep, and our very good friend who rescues many dogs and volunteers at many shelters.

For some reason I like the name Mozart for “Duke.”

Great news about Dan being okay.

Regarding the cookbook: We would have to follow the wishes of the publisher but I don’t see why more pictures and recipes would be a problem. As far as its selling, I believe that there is an audience for cookbooks. I’m still checking it out.

As for “I’m thinking we should….”–it is grammatically correct. It’s an interesting combination of tenses.

Howlers, your farm is beautiful. It looks like paradise. We are very dry and brown here in the California foothills. It is hard to believe that we live 45 minutes from the south entrance of Yosemite National Park. As soon as we get our first good rain, the grass turns green almost overnight. It is magic. Until then, we worry about fire.

That picture is beautiful! Is that long line your driveway, otherwise known as a lane?

Barb is very frustrated. She went to a website recommended by Wookie, who got a 1 time only super-duper cheap price for the cookbook. Barb submitted an order, which she thinks is the same as what we have. With a 50% discount for a first time customer, the price is $30.00 with shipping, Not sure if they will add tax on top of that. That means with postage to you guys, it is going to be around 32-33.00 for one copy. Not sure if anyone wants one for that price. I have the order on hold till I hear. That is more than I expected, so Wolfie and BSD had both comitted on one copy, but do you still want at that price?

The Buffalo Bills won their first game. Big wup. Everybody thought the team was so terrible because the owner, Ralph Wilson, kept saying he couldn’t make any money on this team. Well, it turns out the Bills are the most profitable team in the league. People feel duped.

Hi Liz! Wow already at 101 and it’s only 8:07.

The local hospital (sort of) is undergoing some changes. They will have to merge with a bigger hospital. The staff are all upset by this and they are very understaffed right now.

Zoë said it was like Bizaro World. (Superman) And she totally agreed that NO one reads the medical charts.

But Dan is feeling better. For the first time he got angry instead of trying to be the nice guy. Worked great. They were getting ready to come home when his nurse (who seemed more upset by the fact she couldn’t find any TV remotes took out his drip thing and put a small bandage on it. It started bleeding and she just left.

It bled over everything: the bed, the floor, the chair, even the wall. Zoë couldn’t get it to stop. So she found another nurse who fixed it. When she was finished she was out in the hall and Zoe and Dan heard her said to the first nurse, didn’t you read he was on blood thinners?

Yikes! SWP . . . Stay Well People!

BSD, I just ordered 3 at 31.60 each. You are not obligated tho. It was very frustrating, because I did not know what wt. paper to order. I went with 28lb. because 100 lb. was 5.00 per book more (after 50% discount.) They were up there above 65.00 each + shipping. I did order 1 for you, but I can keep it if you don’t want it, or if it turns out I ordered something wrong. Depending on what we find out, I would still be interested in more later as well.
Think about it – like I said, I can always keep the 3 copies.

Howlers: I like the name Nikolai—even thinking about it for a name of a future team member. It is a checkpoint on the Iditarod trail.

Rio: Bear and moose were a dining treat provided by our hosts last night—AJ and I don’t hunt but enjoyed the meat. Maybe we can make a thing or two from Dishlickers when you’re here or (whispering) if other Plunderers come up have a dinner party.

OTAS got a car! It’s a Hybrid and gets 33 miles per gallon, highway and city. He will need that if this house comes through (knock on wood) because it’s 45 minutes from both of their works. i wish he could get Barb’s house because he would love a barn, spiders and all.

Tomorrow YSAS has his first rehearsal for the Indie movie that he has no idea what part he’s playing. Got to love that.

I am going to bed. It was a long day of worry. I’m so glad Dan is okay, but it is tempered with being angry at our entire medical system. If we could get rid of hospital “administers” and hospitalists perhaps medical care could get back to the patients.

Snowhook Bella: the leaves are pretty much off the trees. I saw a few tiny flakes in the air the other day but chose to blame it on my Lasik surgery rather than actually calling it snow. I still see halos around lights which is starting to be a problem with car lights. I guess I’ll know in a couple of months if they will disappear or I get used to them. I am reading fine but the florescent lights at school irritate my eyes. I seem to be fine at home.

I don’t think there will be a puggy in my future. It is hard enough to housetrain a dog in summer, it is probably not going to happen to a puppy at -20, -30, -40, -50.
