The Future

Spence here. The question has come up – like maybe a million times! – after the ending of SCENTS AND SENSIBILITY: Will there be more Chet and Bernie? The second-last sentence of the book makes it clear – at least so I thought – that the answer would be yes. But just in case: YES! MORE CHET AND BERNIE!

As for when, there are 2 answers. The next actual story is the e-short, SANTA 365, coming Nov. 24. (Please note that the events in SANTA 365 take place earlier than SCENTS AND SENSIBILITY, probably just before THE DOG WHO KNEW TOO MUCH.) As for the next Chet and Bernie novel: normally I’d be writing it right now, but – as happens in what my grandmother always called “the writing game” – an idea came to me out of the blue that just could not be ignored. I’m in the middle of it at the moment, and it will be my next published novel. The working title, and most likely actual title: MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. What can I tell you? There’s a dog in it, in a supporting role (in both senses). It’s part crime story, part war story, part something else, the something else part being what drew me in so strongly. As soon as we have a pub date, we’ll let you know.

And after that: More C&B. Any questions?

Good morning. Spence, this is REALLY BIG NEWS! Can’t wait.

Three things we are grateful this morning:
    1). Mom is mobile (a.k.a. Self-sufficient)
2). Bella’s incision is healing very well
3). This here farm looks beautiful in all of its Autumn splendor.

A question, yes: Is the author PA or SQ?

    Good morning all.

Oh, Bee. That is indeed a good question. It certainly will make a difference in the texture of the storytelling.

Howlers – good news indeed. May your healings be as progressive as the change of the season.

Our new stainless steel fridge arrives today. Packing all the stuff from the current fridge into coolers. It’s amazing the things you find buried in the way back of an fridge. And kind of scary.

    Good Morning Everyone.

We are Looking Forward to Santa 365, which is coming up soon, and to hearing more about OFA’s new book.

Magpie&Lucy: Hope Barb gets her Suitcase soon. Luckily this didn’t happen Going to her destination.

BooBear: Your Mom’s Oxalis Plants are lovely. We have one that Staff sent us a few years back that is thriving too. So delicate, yet so hardy.

Royal Mum: Loved the News Clip from yesterday! And, yes, Seattle is one of those cities that no longer celebrates Columbus Day.

Good morning all. It sounds more like a PA book, and I think there is going to be a little break in the C&B series. I don’t think we will get one next summer.

Bear, Going down there, I was totally in charge of packing so I was very organized. I sort of dropped the ball yesterday morning. Got the suitcase out of my room and at the top of the stairs, but then never checked to make sure Dave grabbed it.

Suitcase is already on its way. Shipped by FedEx, and the exact same price as what United charged. You wouldn’t believe the huge bags people tried to sneak in as carry-ons!

I had no doubt that there would be another C&B book! PA/SQ sure likes to keep his readers in suspense…

Howlers: Glad that your mom is mobile, and that Bella is healing nicely. When does the collar come off?

T.C.: I forgot to ask….How are you getting along with Bella? Have you and Zeusikov reached a peace agreement.

Hi Wose. Thanks for asking about me. I find Bella to be annoying, though harmless. I am trying to train her in proper cat etiquette.
Zeus still wants to be my friend, and while I am no longer afraid of him, I still find his huge head intimidating.

Assuming Bella had the no-babies op? Maggie had that too, but didn’t have to use the dreaded cone.

Agree with Wose, never imagined that C & B was ending. Maybe it was due to advanced warnings about the last two sentences.

Spence: I agree with O’Howlers – this is really BIG news! I’m looking forward to reading Santa 365 (a retro) then Midnight Special and then the new Chet and Bernie. I had no doubt there would be more Chet and Bernie.

Howler’s Mom: I’m glad you are self sufficient but be careful you don’t do too much. I’m also glad Bella is healing well. Hooray for Fall!

“Out of the blue” — great image if you think about it. Thanks, Spence!

Happy about Barb being home, the luggage on the way, the OH mom’s improved mobility, Bella’s healing, TC’s lack of fear, and everyone else’s presence on this here blog!

From sunny and 60 yesterday morning to 48, dark, rainy, and windy this morning. Weather in Wisconsin.

I made chicken veggie/noodle soup this morning.

    Good day all!

I thought I had posted this earlier today, but, in the words of James Thurber, “I hope this is true. I make things up you know.” To answer Wose’s question from a day or so ago, regular postings on Facebook have no intrinsic value, but my corral of friends includes people I first knew in grade school, so it is a nice way of letting people know how our lives are going.

T.C.: Being small and meek, I also find huge heads intimidating (literally and figuratively). I am sure you will be successful in training Bella in all things cat.

Terry: Thanks for your response. I shy away from Facebook because just Googling my name brings up way TMI on me. Besides, I don’t want to let any of my friends know that I am only leading a life less ordinary.

Macy: Does your mom find keeping a gratitude journal therapeutic?

CHobbit. We have the wide open spaces. We also have a night sky that is wonderful. You can see it from one horizon to another! Of course you have night skies up in AK too. Only not so much in Anchorage I suppose. Now out in Willow at the Kennels…(wait, I forgot all those trees)

Spence. Does the new idea have anything to do with those ‘things out there-in space’? You really jumped on that comment yesterday.

Looking forward to it, whatever it is. Nice of you to bring out all the ‘retro’ books to sort of ease it into the atmosphere. I am thinking it will be a Peter A. author. Just my guess…so therefore…

Terry Ballard: I love that James Thurber quote!

Wose: I am sure that many would call my life boring, especially now that my traveling to the US days are over, what with Dad being in a safe place and the Canadian dollar being at 75% of the US dollar, but I am not bored. I am living the dream.

More books from OFA is always welcomed news!

So…I confiscated Sadie’s copies of Countersurfing 101 and Advanced Countersurfing due to an incident with the chicken last week but evidently Mr. Big got his paws on them. He had been determined to eat Sadie’s breakfast so I put poor Sadie out on the deck in the cold and drizzle to eat. Then I saw that Mr. Big had his nose stuck in the can of dog food…

Mr. Big: Not too fat to jump!

A beautiful day here had a frosty start.
I’m off to play cribbage with the old folks. Boring huh Wose? But not for me. This might be a day when old Martha throws the cards at someone (not me hopefully) and I don’t want to miss that excitement.

  22. Linda
    3:43 pm on October 13th, 2015

I, too, am impressed by Mr. Big’s agility.

Wose: I, too, lead a very ordinary life. Sometimes in my mind I hear my parents, family, teachers, and associates chiding me for not doing more. That’s when I concentrate on something my very practical friend, Pam, told me. After years of my teaching challenged and disadvantaged students and working with displaced homemakers, Pam said, “It’s okay. You can relax now. You don’t have to save the world any longer.”

Dawson – one word – DUCK!
Wose – you are not boring. You are Colorful, and Whimsical and you believe in Wizards. Nope – one the Boro-meter Scale, you don’t even register.
Hobbit – we are sending Sadie detailed instructions on the packing and shipping of obnoxious kats to remote locations. At least she only has one nemesis to get in that box.

  27. c.hobbit

T&G: I don’t think Sadie can afford to ship a 21-pound cat anywhere. Besides, most people would consider Alaska a remote location.

Mr. Big has taken over the big bed and ought to give lessons to the bed wanna- be at Snowhook.

Mom looks a lot like that Snoopy after 4 weeks of sitting around eating to pass the time.
Dawson, when the doc told Mom she must still use the one crutch, she was disappointed, and asked him if that means she still can’t ride her bike or her horse. He thought for a minute and then told her she can bike. You could have knoced her over with a feather! (we love that saying). Then she said how about my horse, and did remind him that mounting would put all weight on that one leg while she swung herself up and over. He told her to see how she feels by the end of this week and then maybe try riding!!! He cautioned her not to fall off either one. Hah! Of course he knew that Mom couldn’t promise that. The doc is a cool dude. He told Mom he knew she would be going crazy being inactive. He is a lot like her that way.

Are you talking about the Cubbie’s win, Howlers? We are exciting although there were some mixed emotions as I am a St.Louis girl and my mom was a huge Cardinal fan. Still, the Cards win more often, and we want to see the Cubs go all the way this year.

Chilly nights are here and I have brought out my beloved long-sleeve Snowhook t-shirt to sleep in. The warmest of memories come with it. Snowbella gave it to me at dinner at Amalia’s with Howler’s Mom and our HeartFriend. Of course the Storyteller and Gramp. Watching the debate. Anderson Cooper is very quick on his feet.
I am happy to be able to watch. I don’t have cable and get my tv via the Internet. I usually cannot get “live tv”, so that cuts me out of sports and things like debates. CNN relented and let stream it live.

Rose, mom does enjoy her gratitude journal. She can look back and remember what was going on on certain days by what she was grateful for. Plus it forces her to find some positives in every day. It is a nice wrap up to the day. However, I have not seen MY name listed, just a generic “dogs”. Hmpff

Tomorrow is mom’s last day of day camp after six weeks. Maybe we will see more of her now.

    Night night y’all
