The Engine That Drives the Story
“First,” Bernie said, pulling up to a roadside food truck – one of the greatest human inventions, in my opinion, right up there with cars and handcuffs, “let’s get you fed.” Sounded like a plan to me. And what if after I was done, he said, Second, let’s get you fed again?
Bernie went up to the guy in the food truck window.
“Got any steak?”
“Just the round, but it’s all cut up for the brochettes,” said the food truck guy. He wore beaded chains around his neck and was missing a whole bunch of teeth. Getting through life without all your teeth? Hard to imagine anything worse.
“I’ll take two pounds.”
“How’d you like that done?”
“Raw.”
The next thing I knew I was making quick work of the best steak I’d ever tasted and you can take that to the bank, except you couldn’t, the steak being gone. This took place outside the car, right off the paper wrapper, the food truck guy in the window smiling the whole time. After that, I lapped up a bowl of water and another, felt like me. I sat myself down in front of Bernie and waited.
“What?” he said. “What?”
He didn’t know I was waiting for him to say, Second, let’s get you fed again? That had been the plan, at least as I remembered it.
Then from the food truck guy came a big surprise. “I reckon he wants to do it all over again.”
“Can’t be,” Bernie said. “You saw what he just downed.”
“So how come he’s barking like that?”
Bernie gave me a look. “Could be anything. Cool it, Chet. Let’s go.”
We went. I tried to cool it but couldn’t for the longest time, on account of it couldn’t be anything! The food truck guy hit it on the nose, whatever that might mean, the human nose being mostly wrong in my experience, or not even in the picture. Finally Bernie said, “Chet! I can’t hear myself think!”
Uh-oh. Bernie’s thinking was one of the best things we had going for us at the Little Detective Agency, Bernie having come up with so many thoughts in our career that I couldn’t remember any. I got a grip.
“Whew,” said Bernie.

Hi Chet.
Good morning all.
8:45 am on September 28th, 2013
I thought the engine that drives the story was the love between Chet and Bernie. Here it appears to be Chet’s stomach.
The Newf Pack thinks that Chet’s Second, let’s get you fed again . . makes prefect sense.
In fact I have Grace and Franklin in my room waiting for treats right now. I know they have eaten because I can smell the garlic.
More on that Snigglifritzing turkey raid later. I am still recovering.
8:48 am on September 28th, 2013
Good morning, Chet and Bee and All.
We think melanie and Grace fell asleep by the side of the road during the night! Last thing she posted was that they were going out turkey hunting, then…NOTHING!
Mom laughed so hard she cried this morning, catching up on last night’s posts. The lawyer/witness silliness was hysterical.
8:49 am on September 28th, 2013
Oh! And just like that, she is back! Good morning Melanie! Got turkey?
9:17 am on September 28th, 2013
Good morning all. Haven’t gotten to that part in the story yet. I agree with Chet, I could always eat twice.
Oleys, I think someone at your place is having an anniversary and a birthday this weekend!
Must go back and read last night’s posts, see what the turkey hunt is all about.
9:30 am on September 28th, 2013
Oh, Melanie, the joys of insomnia. Poor Grace, did she mind the interruption of her beauty sleep? We really liked your steam-of-consciousness posts, even though we hate that you had to be awake to send them. Happy napping today? Yikes, no protein.

Good Morning All!
Wow, it is a good thing I read about those turkeys now….would have been lots of bad dreams on top of the ones I have already!
RIO! I am so happy for your friend! I am skipping and twirling, but I just finished breakfast, so I don’t want to splort. Besides, I think I might splort when Grizz and I meet Teddy and his mom and dad. Belle Starr is getting ready to splort again!
Good day to all!

Greetings all.
Just got back from one of our favorite events of the year: the League of Women Voters Booksale. Yahooo! This is a huge sake and social event. They rent the cafeteria of a large high school and fill every single table with books, sorted by category. One entire side is mystery books. We even found a copy of Dog On It. Plus Dorothy Sayers, Tony Hillerman and you name it.
And now, back to cleaning out the cellar.
sigh…..

Creeping out of the house, Grace and I were taking our lives in our paws. The neighborhood bear had been seen the day before under an apple tree. I had my black Stormy Kromer covering my (mostly gray) hair. Grace was hatless.
Having learned from Chet that pictures didn’t always make it for The Nation Within, I had found my guys’ old Scatch and Sniff book on Farm Animals. We reached our orchard with only the noise of crickets keeping us company. With my hat brim clip on LED lights I found the scratch and sniff for the turkey.
Grace took a whiff. Another whiff. I noticed the guys had been eating a PB&J sandwich the last time they read the book. I scratched harder. Grace alerted and off we went. Through neighbors’ yards, through bushes, through puddles, across the street, back across the street. We had all the dogs in the area barking. Front lights came on. Explanations were going to be awkward. Thank Dog, Grace headed for the swamp.
She stopped under an apple tree and there, huddled together were a rafter of wild turkeys. Ten feet up in the air. We ate some apples and thought about our options. I ate an apple, and tossed it over my shoulder. Now I can NOT throw or catch anything, so the apple went straight up in the air, missing a turkey, but disturbing it enough that it flew down landing on Grace’s head. It fell asleep.
We returned home by backyards. I lighted the way while Grace soft pawed her way home, up our stairs and into our room. She nosed the turkey on to the chair. Listening to the soft murmurings of the turkey, both Grace and I fell into a deep sleep.
Until Frank smelled something at 7 am . . but, I’ll tell you about that later.

12:08 pm on September 28th, 2013
Fred came over to play and poop. Those baby bunnies are still in their nest. We gently lifted up the grass to look at them and they don’t look ready to leave yet. Jamie Googled wild rabbits, and it looks like they need to be 3-4 weeks old before venturing out. Probably up to a week more to go. It is a pain to not be able to let him out into his yard, but we don’t want him to kill the bunnies.
Cutting grass this morning, picked some green beans (those pole beans just keep going), and picked a huge eggplant.
Going to make an eggplant/pasta casserole later. New recipe Barb saw on morning t v. Will review it later.

Rio: The first rule is: don’t pass out when you hear the amount they want to charge you and second; do not send priority mail otherwise they will charge you an arm and two legs (and it will take longer to get here). I hope your friend does not plaster “fragile” stickers all over the box. Those are the boxes they play soccer with in the back rooms of the post office. Oh…and: Do not insure; Pretend the contents are worth the same as a couple pairs of your grandma’s underwear; do not worry; be patient; the package will arrive safe in record time if you follow these directions.

Barb&Magpie: I always look forward to your Meal Menus.
Rio: Your Friend’s Recipe for Tuna Salad is identical to ours.
Food! The topic of the day! We are Late for Breakfast here because a special lunch is in the near future. Don’t know if I can last without a snack before then. Is that more than 2 hours away?

Grizz, Belle Starr, and I just had the greatest time with Teddy RR and his mom and pop. I tried to talk Teddy into staying here with me, but I think his mom and pop would miss him. And I got my first passport stamp!

Yeep! I only splorted three times! I will send the Giant later to clean it. What did Teddy do when we first met? He bumped me so I bumped him right back. He did it again so I did it again. I wore my sparkly pink collar that I save for special and I gave Teddy a pawful of gold glitter as a gift. My Two-legged is right—Teddy’s maw and paw are wonderful people. I already knew that about Wose and Grizz.

Staff: Good memories and fun times.
Always suspected it and now we know..Spence is channeling Chet for real. Speaking of which…IMHO Chet is Not a fictional character like some have claimed…he is very real. I have proof of this because he pawprinted our copies of The Sound & the Furry and A Cat Was Involved. Heh.

Dawson!….If the package had weighed just a little more she says the postal-gal was going to force her to send it Priority…sniff!…So she lucked out there. She wrote “Gift” down as the description and the postal-gal said she had to be more specific, so she wrote “Artwork”. I hope this won’t cause a soccer game to break out with the box becoming the ball…grump!…No Tracking, No Fragile stamps and No Insurance….sniff!…My friend is very worrit.

Oh oh oh!!! I met my bestest New York friends, Ms. Rose and Mr.Grizz. Ms. Rose had some extra special treats for me whenI arrived (on account of the fact that she knows Mom and Dad never ever feed me.). She let me play on the ground with her and nibble on her a little. And and and she told Mommy I could never be a Devil Dog cause I’m too cute. Heh heh, wait until later tonight. I met Ms Belle Starr and she gave me some yummy gold sparkles. She is beautiouful. Just like Ms. Rose. I told her and the Prof to come along with us but they couldn’t fit in the back seat with me. Sigh. Stuck with Mom and Dad again. But on to Vermont. Happy happy day. A passport signature and meeting my friends. Am I lucky or what?. Teddy RR

Teddy Rough Rider: You are one lucky youngster to have the bestest mom & dad AND to have met Belle Starr, Rose and the Griz. I know I was very excited to get my passport stamped for the first time. Hope there will be many more to come.
Rio: Your friend did everything 2-leggedly possible so she needn’t worry. The MG’s are too busy preparing for Canadian Thanksgiving to worry about “Artwork”. I will let you know when I get it.
Oh yeah!
I keep forgetting to let T&G know I got their card…like four days ago! Thanks for thinking of me while lounging at the beach scarfing lobster. I was lounging at the beach scarfing crab while you were writing that card. Now I am in frosty weather and the beach is a dim memory but for the smell of buttery lobster coming off that card.

We watched Rio’s card to C Hobbit. You do have to enter the code, so enter it before going to the link. Anyone who can yodel is amazing to us. How do you even learn how to do that?
This might be a minor SPOILER ALERT, but not much of one, as we will say this discreetly. In Chapter 5 Chet has a concern over a medical procedure that is really, really funny.

(Pookey camping in the land of, “Gee, we don’t know why the WiFi won’t work”.)
Don’t pay the ransom, we have escaped the non’WiRi zone, if only for a bit. Mom usually reads to us all and takes notes so her lack of short term memory doesn’t matter and she can comment on all she wants to BUT, here in “The Doghouse” she forgot to pack paper and pencil/pen 🙁 She said to comment on: Barb, she does her tuna just like you, we love it. OH: happy anniv and maybe a b-day? Macy: hope health comes your way. Frank: If I don’t say HAPPY B-DAY to you, Darah will slime me to the floor when we get home. CHobbit: Happy b-day.
Took us forever to get here. Mom had to go to people v e t Friday a m. Another infection 🙁 At least he said she could come on the trip with me and Daddy Dawg if she took her meds and didn’t over do. All mom could say was that life without a spleen is interesting 🙁 Mom took a couple of fotos and I’ll try to send them if my paws hit the correct ipaw buttons. Pay no attention to my wounds. They are STILL from the racoon, but we think the new antibiotic is working, it just upsets my puppy tummy. Mom is great, she buys yogurt for me, me, me:)

View out our back window.

we are coming up for air from the cellar that is now almost empty. Mama made beef and veggie soup, and we are going to get some on our supper because we have been SUCH a big help in the cleaning department.
Sage is really not happy about all this. At 3 am, whilst we were peacefully sleeping, he came into the bedroom and picked a fight with Gilly. We didn’t see the start of the fight, but there was a lot of yipping and snarling and caterwalling before Mama got the light on. And then we could see Gilly standing in her bed, lips curled, and Sage standing on his hind legs, batting at her.
Everyone got yelled at, and Sage took off at RocketKat speed. Mama went and got the water pistol – Sage knows what that is all about, so we had a peaceful rest of the night.
See – THIS is why we keep trying to ship the Wrotten Kats off to anyone who will have them.
Maybe Melanie can get a turkey to sit on them.
5:17 pm on September 28th, 2013
Let’s see . . where was I?
Grace and I sleep with the fans going. The turkey seemed to be enjoying itself . . Head tucked under it’s wing, soft gobbling sounds as it snored. Grace woofed in her sleep. I snuggled deeper under the covers.
Have I ever mentioned that Franklin can open doors?
The door sprang open, rebounded and slammed shut. Franklin woofed from the other side of the door. The turkey stirred. The door slammed open again, and Franklin charged in, and the door slammed shut again. Franklin was growling and woofing. The rest of The Pack, trapped on the other side of the door, barked hysterically. Grace woke up at attention and started sounding off not knowing why.
The turkey shrieked, and the carpola hit the fan. I am not speaking metaphorically. I sat up in bed and yelled, “Quiet!” It did nothing.
The turkey flew to the top of the bookcase. Franklin and Grace tried climbing, and all the books tumbled down. I tried “Sit!”. That didn’t work either.
Dogs barking, climbing, clawing at the door, Zoë yelling, and the turkey gobbling and shrieking; a mad house.
I rushed to the window and opened it as far as I could. Grabbed Grace’s and Franklin’s collars, and the turkey jumped down to the chair, and out the window. It was screaming, “Sanctuary . . sanctuary” as it flew down the street.
I looked at the floor covered with feathers and carpola, at the two dogs grinning at me with drool all over them . . And sighed. I threw them out the door, and leaving everything on the floor, crawled back in bed for another hour.
I hope I get some sleep tonight.

If not, perhaps there will be another installment of The Tall Turkey Tail Tales (another one that is hard to say).

Dawson and Rio. I have been reminded that I seem to have some trouble sending Dawson the wonderful Plunderful Quilt. Sniff. I can’t imagine why. Maybe I will send it along when I finally return home. Maybe not also. heh heh heh.
Oh OK I will send it. I bet it costs an arm and a leg. Maybe I will let Abbie the Kitty take it to the PO. Sounds like a plan.
Lucky Rose and the Ruff Rider to have stamps on their passports.
Rio, belated happy last day wishes. It is nice to know you were appreciated and to be gone gone gone.
Melanie, I hope those turkeys don’t try to get revenge for the kidnapping of one of their own. It could get scary.
Happy Birthday CHobbit
Happy Anniversary O’Howlers.
Oh My Dog I know I am forgetting other birthdays and things but I am too far out of the loop here in the wild city of Fargo.

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of
your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so pesople
could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having onne
orr two images. Maybe you could space it out better?
