The Dog Who Knew Too Much

“Weren’t we going to post this on Tuesday?” says Spence.

“But it’s visible this morning at Amazon,” says Admin.

“Oh.”

“Exactly.”

Good morning, y’all! They’ve added Susie to the cover, and we get to see more of Chet! This has a different feel than past covers. And does anyone else want to scream, “No, Chet! Don’t go in there!” or is it just me?

    Hi there, Kirby!

I love the cover, and the fact that Susie is on it, and that we see a fuller view of Chet. I love the mysterious feel to this new cover, and yes, I do want to yell “Don’t do it, Chet!”

    Greetings to Everyone!

Hey, Rose! I wasn’t sure if I liked the cover when I first saw it. But the more I look at it, the more it grows on me.

Rose: Are you having any posting problems? The first time I tried to post it said, “Slow down, you’re posting too fast.” But then when I refreshed the page my comment showed up. Then the second time I tried to post I got that “cannot find the page” page and had to hit the back button and then refresh to get back here.

Yes, Kirby, I just got the “can’t find page.”

Sorry, but I don’t like Suzie on the cover. Otherwise, it’s great cover art.

Art!…As a beautiful picture, its great….snort!….As the cover of Chet and Bernie, it’s not right. I don’t like Susie in Chet’s place on the cover….grunt!

Geese!…My friend just emailed me and said she almost took out 3 large geese this morning on her drive to work….heh!… Seems they have taken over the office parking lot and the street getting to the office…snort!….Three of them jumped into the turn lane just as she was zoomin’ into it….scrreeeech!…She slammed on her brakes and the 3 numbskulls sauntered across the busy street…grunt!

    Good morning everyone.

    Chet! I love the cover!

B.Stover: I, like Kirby, when I saw Suzie on the cover thought, B’s not gonna like this.

I wondered why Suzie isn’t covered with mosquito bites, dressed like that.

    Hey Kirby:

I had problems with my first post. I got the same message as you did. Hopefully, this issue is resolved.

B: Just curious, why don’t you like Suzie on the cover? Do you like that Chet is more prominently featured on the cover?

I wasn’t around much yesterday — first Mom went to a bridal show with my girl (no engagement yet, but Mom keeps saying she’s engaged to be engaged), then she came home and immediately went to Vacation Bible School, then she said she was too exhausted to turn the computer on for me (what’s so hard about that?), so now I’m finally catching up on yesterday’s news.

Mollypop: I’m sorry you’re still under the weather. I hope your test results give the doctors a plan on how to help you — quickly! Maybe you can have a belated birthday celebration when you’re all better!

Wolfie: Hang in there, buddy. I hope things are looking better this morning.

Melanie: Re: pool. I’m glad you’re getting that pool under control, but if the Newfs ever invite me for a dip, that platform is going to have to be a lot higher or I’ll drown!

We have paws and fingers crossed for Audrey making a safe return home. Spence, please keep us posted.

We knew Bee would not like the cover, but we do. Not to sound ego-centric here, but Chet looks an awful lot like my kind – English Shepherd. Only at 100 lbs. he has some other things mixed in. I am about 65-70 lbs, so he is way bigger. As we have said in the past, we like Suzie, and we know Spence wouldn’t turn it into a sappy Nora Roberts novel, even if the love affair heats up a bit.

Aud, come home baby, come home!

Ooh, ooh, ooh, it’s a story in a story. Just a glance at the cover tells a story and makes you want to open it up and peek inside. So tempting!

Busy, busy emptying boxes. Mom’s gotta make a trash run soon and get all these empties outta here. Can’t see the dining room for the empty boxes. Mom says it shows progress. Hhmph! I just think it’s a mess.

Met 3 Yorkies this morning. I was doing my business and up comes these curious frisky critters. Can’t a guy have some privacy? Jeez! Come back and visit when I’m done.

  36. B.Stover
    10:43 am on July 18th, 2011

I hope Audrey is okay and they find her soon.

Rose: I don’t like Suzie on the cover because she is not a partner in the Little Detective Agency and should not be. The Chet and Bernie series has proven very successful and should not be changed. Adding Suzie would change it. Also, I do not like having the entire Chet on the cover. I think his breed and looks should be left to the reader’s imagination based on Spence’s descriptions rather than on an artist’s rendering.

  37. Rose
    10:53 am on July 18th, 2011

B: Although Suzie is not a member of the Little Detective Agency, she is a part of Bernie’s and Chet’s life. I don’t think the fact that she is on the cover suggests anything else.
I like having Chet on the cover. This is exactly how I imagined he would look. Much better than on the video…

Spence: I hope that Audrey comes back to you safe and sound.

Mom started feeling better today. She was going to call the doctor for something, anything, help, help, and maybe now doesn’t have to. If the tests taken on Saturday show a problem, she may have to take an antibiotic, but Sam’s Dad was put on Cipro and Mom sure doesn’t want that.

Now that Audrey is home, I can breath again. That is the worst feeling. The heartache . . . I believe all of us have gone through that.

When my guys were going through their teenage years they would occasionally forget to call home. It is like that feeling except that when we are missing one of the Pack there are so many different kind of dangers they can get face.

Dog, children and pets . . . they hold our hearts.

  53. Melanie

  54. B.Stover

Also on the Facebook entry on the right of the blog screen, notice that Audrey is “unrepentant.” LOL!

  55. Gus and BooBear
    1:13 pm on July 18th, 2011

We agree with Rio and B. The cover is very pretty but we really don’t like Susie on the cover. Sorry, but she is a secondary character. We prefer the back of Bernie and Chet. And that is not how we imagine Chet to look. We had pit more shepherd in him. The border collie look isn’t intimidating to most people and remember, most people seeing Chet for the first time are nervous.

We also feel that having Susie on the cover makes it too busy. If the artist felt that he/she had to show all of Chet, then we should just see the back of Bernie’s head. Just saying…..

  56. BearSpiritDog
    1:17 pm on July 18th, 2011

Heh! We now know Audrey is feeling tip top and back to her old self!

  57. Melanie

I ask again, what makes you think it’s Susie?

Remember that Leda owns part of the Little Detection Agency. What has happened between Leda and Malcolm? Has she decided to join up with the detection?

    Melanie (playing Devil’s advocate)

  58. Gus and BooBear
    1:17 pm on July 18th, 2011

That should say “put more shepherd in him”.

And yea for the safe return of the unrepentant Audry!

  59. Wookie of Chevy Chase
    1:21 pm on July 18th, 2011

Thanks for letting us know that Audrey is safe and back home. I was halfway up to the Cape in the Wookiemobile to look for her myself when I saw BSD’s message on the blog.

Actually I took off after Audrey right after getting home from the vet, where there was good news. It was my first checkup since chemo was over and my lymph nodes are normal and my blood values are stable. I also lost three pounds (down from 95 to 92), which pleased the vet; she thinks I should get down to 85 pounds — not so sure about that happening though. Also, I don’t have to go back again until the end of August.

    Wookie

P.S. On ocassion I do get a message when I try to post that I need to slow down and that I am posting too fast (not sure how that is even possible but I am sure the Fabulous Baker Boy knows the answer to that). Most times, I just wait a few seconds and hit Submit Comment again and it generally goes through on the second time.

The Cover!!! We love seeing all of Chet front and center on the cover. The artwork is beautiful and as Rose said, it does look mysterious. ummm That is a classic Border Collie, but we know Chet is much bigger than a BC. Whatever, Chet is one handsome dude just like we knew he would be, and he is smart like a Border Collie.

I am so happy that Audrey is home safe and sound that I am not even going to comment on Suzie being on the cover.

A comment on the new cover: It is Beautiful. However, B does have a point about Susie. We don’t think she (or, as Melanie says, how do we know it’s Susie…) belongs on the cover. Otherwise it draws us in wondering what Chet is in for now.

    Wookie: That is Excellent News!!!

MollyPop: Happy to hear you are feeling better.

Melanie: Yesterday you said YSAS appeared in an episode of Damages. Can you tell us which one? I agree the character Glenn Close portrays is not very likable, but that may be what makes the show so good. Anyway, we love it and are looking forward to Season 3, which is listed as “long wait” on Netflix.

Well, I have the day off. Since I have just now finished everything that I wasn’t going to do, I think I will watch something. Dog knows what.

Wookie: I love hearing good news…Glad your lab work is looking good!

MollyPop: Happy to hear your mom is back on the road to wellness!

Maybe the mystery woman is Janie, Chet’s groomer. He loves the sound of her voice, and she IS the best groomer in the Valley. She also brushes Chet’s teeth….

(Whispering) I still think it’s Suzie on the cover.

The more I look at the cover, the more intrigued I am about the story. If Bernie and Suzie weren’t placed in the foreground, the rest of the picture actually looks like a photograph!

I do believe I’ve changed my mind, which kats are entitled to do by the way. I now LOVE the new cover. Also, I’ve decided there is nothing wrong in trying something new for the cover art. After all this is the 4th book in the Chet & Bernie Mystery Series. Why does everything always have to be the same? Rose said it best: It has a compelling and mysterious feel to it; drawing you in, tempting you to find out more….

I just received Staff’s potholders! They are beautiful. Black background; on one side there are hotdogs and on the other are dogs. The loop is the material that frames Spence’s quilt (I think): Black background and white paw prints. Wonderful! Thank you Staff. (I like the stamps on the envelope also, especially the one of the coffeepot: American Toleware which I’ve never heard of before.)

That is a boarded up old mine on the cover. I do not want Chet going in there because it is too dangerous…send Suzie instead.

Dawson, coyotes are very common here. We see them all the time.
Some live in the desert right next to my dog park. Often mom and I see them trotting down the street with a rabbit in their mouth when we are driving to the dog park. I am not allowed to be off leash except at safe places like the dog park. “Never trust a Siberian”

The cover – is it a photo-stopped photograph? Melanie, can you tell? I, along with G&BB, envisioned Chet with a shorter coat. I’ll just keep on using the mind picture I started with in the first book. Guess we have to trust the marketing people on cover art, among other things.

I’ve taken a long look at the cover. I believe it is a mixture of real and art work. Chet looks like a cross between an English Shepherd and German Shepherd with some Border Collie thrown in the mix!

If you look at the perspective of Bernie and “whomever” in the foreground and Chet next to the mine (did you notice the veins of gold running up the rock?) he is easily a 100 pounder.

Hello All. We are on the fence about the new cover. Macy said it well that it “lacks a certain edginess.”
The ARC also had Chet out front with whomever and whomever cowering in the rear. How do we even know that is Bernie? We thought Bernie would be a bigger guy than that. He is so strong and such a good fighter after all.
Wolfie, we think your mom still needs to talk to someone about your Dad’s medicine.

It seems that several of us see a little of themselves in Chet. Personally, I never had any hope that he had any Min-pin in him. I pictured him as Wookie with a couple of generations of mystery dog stirred in, just enough to make him intimidating. Just 1/8 teaspoon of pit bull. Two things about the cover. Well, maybe more than two. It is rather green and I am not sure I like that, but it sure gives you an eerie sense of place.
But the two things are both about Chet. His right front foot looks like it is coming out of his tummy and his tail is way too friendly and happy. That is a fluffy tail and Chet is not a fluffy dog. Scatterbrained sometimes but never fluffy.

Yo Rio, buddy! Sure I watch Burn Notice. I get a kick out of all the spy information they give. “If you ever want to break into a steel vault without drawing a crowd…” Those bits crack me up.
And being a southern gentleman, I ain’t gonna say how much I hate the cover…I’ll just say it sure isn’t what I was looking for in a Chet and Bernie mystery. I stopped reading Hardy Boys a looooong time ago. Got no problem with having a pretty little lady on the cover, but sure don’t like the whole picture of Chet. Makes his character too much of a dog, instead of a dogminded voice of a detective.
Not saying that every cover has to be exactly the same, but take a look at Dick Francis books, Robert Parker’s Spenser books, John McDonald’s “color” series. Different picture, but the same artistic style. Personally, I like jest seein the back of Chet’s head, next to Bernie’s shoulder – partners lookin in on the crime.
Course, what I’m waitin for is what’s between the covers – I can always take off the blasted book jacket.

Too green, too “pretty”, too Hardy Boys.

Too much Chet, and I didn’t think it was possible to have too much Chet. Kind of like seeing Santa at home in his underwear eating pork rinds. You need a little distance from beloved characters, some mystery. Especially in a mystery!
