Thanksgiving (1): From Dog On It

Albie Rose lived in the biggest house I’d ever seen, more like a palace, surrounded by high walls. A guy with big shoulders and a gun on his hip led us across vast green lawns to a huge swimming pool. On a deck chair by the pool lay a fat old man in a tiny bathing suit. His skin was oiled and deeply tanned, just about the color and texture of a turkey Leda had left too long in the oven one Thanksgiving. I tried not to look.

Congratulations to AJ and Snowhook Kennel, and first-rate stuff from Melanie, as always.

This was a team effort. I started, The Royal Mum added, Bella checked facts, B.Stover edited and then i cut and reorganized a bit.

I will admit to channeling Riö and keeping things on the move.

So a cheer for Snowhook AJ, Rebecca and Their Pack!

Hmmm, that reminds me that at some point I want to know what an “AJ” moment is . . . Pondering.

    Good morning all.

Dusting of snow when we woke up this morning. The “guys” are here taking the stove out, cut the cabinet to make room for the new stove which is coming on Sunday. To be put in by the “Sears guys”.

Exciting times. Couldn’t find the circuit for the stove. Only been here for 12 years. Snickering. We have a laminated piece of paper with all of the circuits on it. Many which have “?” next to them.

I remember this part. At some point Chet ends up in the pool. Way to go Chet!!

Melanie: I’m laughing about your circuit board. Good luck with the stove. The windchill is 19 here, though the sun is out.

    Good morning all.

    HI Melanie and B!!

It is a crisp, chilly morning here in Westchester. Dropping in for a quick hello and it’s off to work I go. B, you are MUCH to young to retire.

Once again, props to A.J., Snowhook, and Melanie!

Rio, I was going to tell you that I thought I found them on the MM page, over to the right side. Those Polar Bear earrrings are nice. Did the Royal’s Mom make those?

Bear, We ordered Tree of Life, because you mentioned it last night. Usually anything that you like, Barb likes as well. We saw one mention on Netflix for Bottled something or other, about the early days of Nappa Valley. Did anyone see that? Barb was thinking about ordering it for Christmas for her brother who is a C&B/coffee/wine/dog fan. She already got them a Dishlickers cookbook and TDWKTM.

Barb&Magpie: We watched The Tree of Life last night. It features Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and an actress that reminded us of Liv Ullmann. The movie was: Beautiful, Mysterious, Poignant, Strange, Disturbing, Confusing, Revealing. The photography was Breath-taking and the narration added to the over-all dimensions of the film. It seemed to be a combination of Ingmar Bergman directing 2001: A Space Odyssey, in that you could feel the mind stretching beyond its usual perimeters. Definitely not a film for everyone. And, even for those of us drawn to this type of Cinematic Imagery, perhaps best viewed at a certain time and place.
We will be most interested to hear your opinions of it.

Home!… Yesterday my friend was home because her mother was about to lose her mind because of Bo’s behavior the day before…grunt!….He was barking at everything and racing around here knocking stuff over….sniff!…Generally just being a real pain in the ass….heh!….So my friend said she would see what goes on around here and put a stop to it…wuffle!… The first thing her and her mother did was to rearrange the furniture in the living room so that Bo could not get on the bay window ledge and bark constantly. I knew it was a mistake when they first moved the couch over there…heh!… After that we were both perfect gentlemen all day long until he wouldn’t let her put his harness on, but that is beside the point…chuffle!… Her mother exaggerates about our his bad behavior and now my friend knows we are both perfect angles during the day…heh!

BlueCat – that is great news. We will still keep the prayers going tonight since the biopsy won’t be in for a while.

Mama is working hard on just the right words for the prayer. Her plan is to create a document in Word, and then transfer it to the blog. Pre-prayer circle plea – Mysterious Moderator – please let the document go thru…promise not to mention things for feet or places with s l o t machines.

She has been keeping notes from the blog about prayer requests, so she seems pretty confident she has everyone who has asked. But as she told someone this morning, its NEVER to late to be included in a prayer.

Would you all like the prayer posted 15 minutes or so before the gathering time? Or do you want it to appear at the moment?

Stover. OleyHowlers actually posted the link for the Simon & Schuster contest on Wednesday and it is copied below. It ia a bit weird, because the page is about the contest and lists some of (but not necessarily all) the books that may be under consideration. In any event, go to the bottom of the page and their is further text that says “What was your favorite book of 2011? Tell us, and you’ll be entered to win 10 books in the genre of your choice.” with “Tell us” underscored as an active link. Click on that and you get the form to vote for your favorite new book of 2011. They make it kind of difficult, but once you know what to do, it is easier.

SiberH and I already voted on Wednesday. Wookie

Snowhook Purchases: I bought a neck gaiter lined in purple which I hear is a popular choice. And the Borzoi’s necklace – WhooooHooooo! And, my own books. Yes, that’s right! No one else would buy them. And I found out A Catty Librarian’s Sailor Man had actually seen the Golden Spruce on his meanderings and read and loved the book. So now he is getting The Tiger for Christmas. And one of the grandkids will get the stuffed tiger and The Golden Spruce, well, I haven’t determined it’s fate yet. Patsy and I had a great time this afternoon. This morning Zoe and I got the Subaru which cost $200 less than they thought it would!! YIPEE!

Patsy and I went down the hill and did errands and then went over to The Royal Mum’s studio. I was giving Patsy her water and yogurt when Mum came out to say hi! Patsy looked up and showed off her yogurt mustache. It was very big.

Then I got to see T & G. Very polite Royals. After greeting me they chewed their bones. I don’t know what the Mum is talking about when she says they get into trouble.

Rio, Behavior problems are the number one reason people get rid of their dogs and the people most often lie about the real reason (behavior problem) they are getting rid of the dog.
I don’t know if this was the case with Bo.
Did your friend get him from a rescue group or a family “that couldn’t take care of him anymore”?
Is Bo only doing the biting when your friend tries to put the harness on him?
Your friend did a good thing taking in Bo and don’t despair.

There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. It looks like Bo’s previous owners did not do right by him. He is only reacting to the treatment he has previously been given. All the leather harnesses in the world can’t fix that, but the love of his new family can. Hooray for you, Rio and your friend, for being there to show Bo how wonderful life can be. It will take time but the payoff will be great.

Perhaps Bo’s family hit hard times in this down economy, and that is why they couldn’t take care of him. There are so many dogs, cats, and horses being given up because of people losing their homes. Very sad. Rio, tell your friend thanks so much for helping Bo. Love always makes good dogs. Mollypop’s mom said it right. There are no bad dogs; only bad dog owners. We are happy for you, Rio, and we hope you enjoy Bo’s company as much as we enjoy Kat (honest, we do).

Words of Wisdom from Us: Bo must have had a bad experience with the harness. He relates it to something negative and/or hurtful, so he bites to stop it.

What about a different type of collar/harness that doesn’t go around his whole rib cage? Can he be walked with just a regular collar? We are not fond of choke chains, so maybe there is something else. He probably doesn’t have a long enough nose to use one of those strap thingys that goes across his muzzle. Any other suggestions?

  62. Sam
    7:22 pm on November 18th, 2011

I have a comfort step-in harness that my front legs step into and then it clips on my back. Bo might like this better.

  63. Mollypop's Mom
    7:26 pm on November 18th, 2011

Sam’s harness is made of mesh and Bo might not associate something like that with whatever bad feelings he has toward his other harness. Also, if the harness just left to lie flat on the floor he can sniff it and walk around it and see that it does no harm.

  64. Melanie

To add to what Mollypop’s mom said about leaving the harness out and letting him walk around it, give him treats when he is doing this. Tiny treats work just fine. He needs to learn to associate the harness with, “Good Things happen when he sees and experiences the harness”.

  66. OleyHowlers
    8:02 pm on November 18th, 2011

Bo’s harness sounds so cool. Maybe he can use a slip-collar for now, and get back to that leather harness after he adjusts to his new world. My 2 cents for what its worth.

  67. Barb & Maggie
    8:02 pm on November 18th, 2011

Those are great ideas guys, for positive reinforcement. We don’t think Bo is biting because he is aggressive. He is using his mouth like 2 leggeds use their hands. He is saying “I do not want you to put that on me”.
What we don’t know is why he doesn’t like it, because a walkie is a good thing. Also we don’t know if he was allowed to buffalo his other people by biting at them.

Harness!…. Well, he tried to bite her again when she almost had that damned harness on him…snort!… She was able to get him to step into one of the places for his leg but then he laid down and when she tries to lift his other leg into the other hole he lashed out…grunt!… She tried several times, but he was having no part of it…sniff! ….Funny how he let her put it on him the first two times with no issue….heh!….He’s no dummy. He just doesn’t want to go for a walk…chorkel! …She says she has to get him to accept this because he needs to get his shots…heh!heh! …She went on her walk alone before it got too dark. I think she was discouraged or disgruntled or something…sniff!…She says she likes the idea of leaving his harness out for him to sniff.

Stuck!… Anyway, let me tell you what happened to ole grumpy Bo today…snort!… Mother and me and him were outside because it was so nice out. She was cleaning up branches and leaves…grunt!….He somehow snuffled himself in-between the fence and a low long board that was put along side the fence to keep out raccoons. Well, he shoved himself in so deep and far that he got stuck big time…heh!heh!….He was wimpering and crying his baby guts out until finally mother heard him…chorkel!… I just watched as she tried to get him to first back out….nope!… She couldn’t lift him because it would have hurt her back…grunt!…She somehow managed to move that big board away from the fence a little, it was heavy, so he could squeeze himself out…wheeze! ….What a dork!

Barb, I am suspicious of that…maybe getting away with biting at his other people and that method of control worked for him in his former home.

Trained!…. That fancy harness that Bo came with was set so small he must have been a puppy the last time he was able to get into it….grunt!… I don’t think he really knows what the harness is for. He doesn’t know it means “walk” because it was ages ago that he actually had it on (if ever!).….wheeze! …She has sized it to its max and it just fits Bo comfortably now. I don’t know what she will do. I think long sleeves and gloves are part of the plan for the next attempt tomorrow…gruffle!

    Collars!… snort!… Collars don’t work if one does not have a neck…sniff!

    Hmmm…did not realize that.

Kat had a fun time at her kamp today. We missed her.

  74. Riö - The Evil Pug
    8:44 pm on November 18th, 2011

No-Neck!….Actually Bo has a very small head, so anything that would fit around the area where a neck should be would slip right over his eight-ball head….chorkel!… She says I have a fat head….sniff!….Or maybe that was “flat head” not sure…heh!

  75. Siber-H
    8:47 pm on November 18th, 2011

Rio, I don’t think the majority of dog trainers would agree with this, but my mom might try the same thing with the gloves and long sleeves. The goal is to let Bo know that this biting behavior is not going to work for him in this family. Just firmly and calmly put the harness on him and don’t say a word while doing it. Ignore the crappy behavior.

Then, and this is a big one, make the walk for him as fun as possible with treats. For right now, this should be Bo’s walk to have fun and not necessarily an exercise walk.

It can take baby steps training a dog and may be need to be repeated over and over.

Right now, Bo is winning and you don’t want that.

  76. OleyHowlers
    8:52 pm on November 18th, 2011

Siber, that makes a lot of sense. You’re right that Rio’s fiend must make sure Bo knows he is not calling the shots. For his own sake.

We will post the prayer in a minute or two.

Winning!….That’s why she was so discouraged tonight…sniff!….He is getting one over on her and she hates that!….heh!…Boy don’t I know it. She says she is going to think about it tonight and then tomorrow if it is nice out, the harness is coming out and it is not going back in the drawer until it has been on a walk…snicker!… I hope she doesn’t decide to put it on me…wuffle! …I don’t think it would fit me thank goodness…heh!

Creator – Thank you for this glorious day. We awoke, and breathed in the air that you have created. We have touched our feet on the glorious earth that you have created. We have seen the sky and the waters that you have created. We know that we are most fortunate to live in your world.

Creator – we also thank you for the friends we have in this world.

We have found each other in your world. You have brought us together and stitched our lives together like a most wondrous and glorious quilt. Each one of us, although we are made up of different colors, different patterns and designs, with different backgrounds, each one of us has been incorporated into this quilt, where each part touches many others, where the beauty of the whole comes from the blending of all the parts. Our quilt spreads over all who seek its warmth, leaving none to face the cold alone.

Creator – just as with any quilt sewn together with care and love, when it is so well used, there may need to be some repairs. We ask you to bring us together with the thread of this prayer so any parts of the quilt that are a little frayed or tattered, any colors that have faded and stitches that have come undone may be made whole again; may be made strong by virtue of our unity. We ask you to hear our hearts beating together, united to pray for the good of our friends.

Creator – we ask you to light your lamp on the path of some of our friends so they will know that they are not lost and alone. Help them to find the gathering place where there will be good things waiting for their arrival. Where Macy’s family has felt the coldness and uncertainty of dark waters, please grant them your warm light and help them find the sun on their faces again.
Where Wolfie’s boys have struggled through the jungle of addiction, please give them the tools they need to finally cut through the grasping vines that hold them back. Let Bella’s beloved brother see through the fog to your light, and know that he can travel safely. We ask that you watch over Macy’s friend Marilyn’s mother, and be with her in this difficult time.

Creator – we ask you to be with each one of us as we work to be the best we can. We ask you to guide us to opportunities that will fulfill what is in our hearts. Please let there be open doorways for McKey, and let there be eagles’ wings soaring along the Iditarod path with AJ and the Huskies.

Creator – We thank you for granting talent to our hands and minds. Bless and guide the hands that sew and knit and quill and cook and paint. Bless the hands that garden and harvest and write and sculpt. Bless the hands that teach, the hands that sooth, and the hands that reach out to help others.

Creator – we are so thankful for the continued good health of our friends. You have brought Barb and Staff, Wookie and BlueCat back to good health, and we ask you to continue to shelter them in your hands. We bring to you prayers for those beloved ones in our circle who need you most – please gently hold Dan and Patsy on their journey. Let them feel only your love and ours. We ask you to hear our prayers as a healing for Wolfie’s mom Mary, Melanie and Zoe, and for BearSpiritDog /Barb’s second son and Liz’s dear Cricket. We ask you to watch over Dawson’s brother and sister in law, and Nana’s sister and brother in law. We ask that BlueCat’s dad will only need to remember this biopsy for the scar upon his skin, and not for the need for any further treatment.

Creator – we ask you to take the strength of our unity, and give it to those who care for others. Let Zoe and Melanie, Kelly, Dawson and Staff, Wolfie and all who give of themselves know that they have our strength to draw from and to lean upon.

Creator – we thank you for the wonderful gift you have given us in the companionship of our beloved animals. They are in your image that they judge us not, and love us no matter our faults. We ask you to watch over them, both in this life and the next. As we honor the memories of loyal Blou, fierce MollyPop, gentle Bess and all the others who have gone before us, they remain in our hearts. Bless those who rescue the abandoned, the abused and the homeless. Bless those who give more to their beloved animals than they give to themselves.

Creator – you have created this wonderful quilt of people, who while we may never meet, will always be joined together in more important ways. In honor of the many gifts you have bestowed on us, our gift will be the warmth and comfort that this quilt provides. We will shelter within its folds our many friends and family members who need our support.

Creator – we lift this prayer to you in unison. We ask you to hear our love and concern for our Circle of Loved Ones. We ask you to grant our requests and be with each one of us in our needs.

Creator – we thank you for this glorious day. We have breathed deeply of the air you have created. We have walked upon the sacred earth you have created. We have gazed upon the sky you set above us and been surrounded this day with your love. We know we are most fortunate to live in your world.

    Amen

If Bo didn’t fight the first two times about the collar…maybe it isn’t the collar at all but the Brutal Walk. Or the collar is pinching somewhere. Or if Rio doesn’t have to walk, Bo doesn’t want to either. I do think your friend should wear some protective gear.

Please Lord, please tell Bo to stop biting. Its not nice and it is very discouraging to the ones who are trying hard to love him. I also ask that you do allow all of us entwined in this special quilt to meet one day preferably at an event where our favorite author is at also. Rio, One more thing your friend needs to know. Bo’s biting is not anything personal toward her. It is just some sort of reactive behavior, probably fear based. A dog can love their human to blazes and still act like that. In other words, tell her not to take it personal.

Wow! A toast to AJ the giant! I’ll have to let him know when I get home. He can’t come to the party because he is getting dog food for the team.

Here’s to Melanie, Professor B and Stinky Mama for all their work on the Living Legend project.

    Hey Dawson!

Please give Franklin and Mac a pat. They are feeling left out. They are not fast enough to be W.L.’s wing men.

(though AJ did mention that he could have used a Newf or two blazing some new trail)

Dawson: That was the team bring more root beer float fixings. I had no idea they’d be so popular. I also asked them to stop and get some hot wings for Rio. Looks like they’re pulling up now.

Hi Bella, I think it all had to do with the SK hat Rebecca was wearing in one of the pictures I sent. It was AJ the giant in front and right behind him was Rebecca in her pink Stormy Kromer!

Melanie: I need all the help I can get. (whispering) I’m a little nervous about seeing Princess Sam again.

Speaking of which, has anyone seen a small, wonderfluffed Princess? I have have a bowl of turkey and Yummy Chummies for her. My lady said never go court a Princess empty pawed. Damnit! Bo! He just swiped the turkey. Franklin! Mac! Stop that pug! No—not that pug, the other pug!

    Oh dear,

Hey Mac. Hey Franklin…yes, I can see you even though you are trying to be invisible. You are one good looking Dude! Wasn’t it your picture that was auctioned off to earn a small fortune to allow Snowhook to enter the Iditarod? Hey! Without you there would be no wingnuts, e.. wingdogs.
Toffee, Turkey and a Toast to my friends the Newfs.

Just talked to my almost daughter in law. She loves the idea of the party! She also said, If you like me on facebook and upload a picture of yourselves, she’ll do a demo of them and sell it to you cheap. Then she laughed. Can you tell that they now have a mortgage?

Melanie!….That was the perfect photo to include….snort!….Rebecca wears Stormy Kromer wonderfully…heh!

AbbieTheKat!….Now she has the hiccups because she has snarfed down way more food than I have…burp!….Abbie, you’ve got to get rid of the excess air from gobbling food one way or the other…sniff!… I prefer the “other” myself…heh!

I think I should stay here for a few days and help Melanie with the remodeling. I can give up the dog park because I have my own play group right here. The leftovers from the party should last a few days.
Whitey-Lance has to go back to Alaska and continue training, but Gracie and I can carry on.

    Yes!
That picture of the ruggedly handsome Giant and the delicately beautiful Rebecca wearing her Stormy Kromer hat was genius to add to the application. AJ is so going to win this Living Legend deal.

Wow! That lobster is good! I guess my allergy to it disappeared.

Andrea: Welcome to the party! Coats were hanging up over there in the corner, but it now looks like some are sleeping off the effects of a great party on a pile of down and fleece.

The SK rep mentioned that I was wearing my pink hat when she was talking with AJ on the phone yesterday. He told her that me in the hat has a cult following and that it is my favorite of all hats.

Thanks Siber-H. I’m overwhelmed, I mean I’m glad you are staying.

Anyhoo, I’m for bed. I’m up way past my bed time. So I’ll snitch a piece of B.Stover’s pies and some jam and rolls, and yes lots of toffee . . .

Have fun, don’t worry about the noise. I’m used to that!

I think you had better spend the night, Rio.
I’m going to help clean up. The Newfs will do the dishes…no point in using water and energy to run a dishwasher when they are around.
I’m turning in then so we can begin construction bright and early tomorrow.
It was a grand party and beautiful prayers.
Best of luck to the Royals’ mum with her show this weekend.

I’ll just take this last piece of toffee. And maybe a tiny piece of pie. I hope Dawson doesn’t stay up too late tonight. She has Mom’s cold now and should get to bed soon.

    Night all.

Such a long day. At prayer time I was unexpectedly in the waiting room of a vet with my cat. I silently said a general prayer wishing well-being and safety to all the plunders/loved ones with physical or emotional needs. An older couple had just put their dog to sleep and as the man was taking care of the bill, the woman was softly crying. So, so sad. It takes such courage, strength and love to do that.

Still tons of work to do tonight. Take care everyone. I might take my iPaw in KY so I might be able to keep in touch. (chetthedog is the only thing on its toolbar) 🙂
