Off to the tennis court this morning – reminding me of the tennis lesson scene in Thereby Hangs A Tail (from the Chet and Bernie series which can-be-read-in-any-order™):

The tall blond guy took a ball from the bucket and hit it to Ganz. Ganz wore white shorts, had skinny legs like sticks. He swung his racquet and hit the ball back. The tall guy let it go by, took out another ball. “Brush up, Shermie, brush up. Spin on the ball, always spin on the ball.” He hit the ball over the net. Ganz swung, this time missing the ball completely. “Brush up but through, up but through, up but through,” said the tall guy, sending over another ball. Brush? I knew brushes, saw none around. Maybe tennis was tougher than it looked, but I didn’t worry about that because a ball came bouncing over in our direction – we were now beside the court – and I snatched it out of the air, and who wouldn’t have, the ball being right there practically saying, “Catch me.” And then – this part was a bit harder to understand – I was on the court, racing toward the net. Up and over: not much of a challenge, tennis nets turning out not to be very high, but still it felt so great, being airborne and all, that I kind of twisted around still up there, if you see what I mean, and landed facing back at the net, and the next thing I knew I was jumping over it again, from the other direction, and, yes! doing the spin move once more, and when I landed this time, somehow with two balls in my mouth now – how had that happened? – I –

    Good day to all.
Leave it to Chet to find a game in every situation.

Diana pawPrints is ball obsessed. So far I’ve only been throwing them for her to chase (and never bring back to me.) But now I wonder if she could catch them in mid air. She isn’t a jumper so a Chet move is likely beyond her. But if she became obsessive about mid-air catches, who knows.

This has given me an idea for play. Perhaps she would let me play with her if I was the “air-tosser” of balls.

I had completely forgotten about this passage. Perhaps it is time to re-read the entire Chet and Bernie series.

I hope Diana pawPrints learns new tricks with the ball chasing.

Wose: I got your message and will be sending the family portrait to you in a day or two.

I am reading Project Hail Mary and it is very good. I hate to put it down to do errands, go to appointments and pre-clean my house because a housecleaner is coming tomorrow. I lingered over the science parts to set them into my brain. I only have rudimentary science skills but I understood what they were describing. I am a little over half way done and just discovered that my e-reader hadn’t quite been plugged in…so I have to wait while it is charging. GAH

I have a zoom meeting later but will try and hop back on the blog–maybe while the meeting is going on! lol

BooBear’s mom. I did read the first of the Howl series. A little slow at the beginning, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it a lot.

WTAFP, thanks for giving it a shot. It’s very different in that the dogs talk to each other but I liked the series.

Have a good holiday weekend, all.

I love me a good tennis ball. I would collect them in the night on my favorite dog pillow. In the morning, the Giant would make me go outside to check my correspondence. Often I would refuse. Didn’t he understand that those tennis balls wouldn’t hatch themselves? Please note, I loved him despite this one character flaw. I blame his upbringing.

Hazel the Stray also loves her a good tennis ball. A couple of summers ago while the team was away for work, My Lady would toss the ball for Hazel after chores were done. Hazel didn’t have an off switch. She would insist My Lady throw the ball for hours —- Did My Lady end up having shoulder surgery that fall? As the summer progressed, Hazel slowed down while fetching. She would still fetch, but at a slow, slow pace. Then, Bannock, a rescue did something that warmed the cockles of my dog pillow. He grabbed the ball that Hazel was making her way toward, ran to Hazel and placed the tennis ball at her paws. He had never shown interest on playing fetch before this, but somehow knew Hazel needed an assist. The Giant and My Lady still give Hazel a tennis ball to sit with her on her dog bed. It is in the same spot as my favorite pillow —- Prime real estate!
