Technology Marches On
“You’re Skyping today?” Spence says.
“Correct,” says Admin.
“I didn’t know you knew how.”
“Today is a first. Reality Check – “
“Novel you wrote? Winner of the Edgar Award for best young adult mystery novel, 2010?”
“Correct. It’s nominated for the Sequoyah Award – “
“Aptly named.”
” – a prize they have in Oklahoma, voted on by high school kids,I believe, and some of them want to Skype with me.”
“Good luck.”
“What does that mean?”
Welcome cagey dude.

Greetings All!
I’m very impressed that Admin is learning to use technology!
Skyping is pretty cool (as long as there are no technical difficulties). Just remember to comb your hair, get dressed, and no nose-picking, as your audience can see you.
Lightning bolts for me tomorrow….I wonder if I can pick up any radio waves by now. 🙂
9:35 am on April 26th, 2012
Wha!?…Holy crap! Admin has graduated from Tweeting to Skyping…heh!heh!…I hope he holds up Spencer so the kids can see him too….snorkel!
9:49 am on April 26th, 2012
Good morning! Skyping! Very impressive, I must say.
More bolts, Rose? Do they hurt while you are getting them? Somehow it does not sound like fun.
Barb is at CLL today. Bummer!
Any news on Dan the Man?
9:53 am on April 26th, 2012
I love to skyp. There’s also something thru Mac that lets you do the same thing, but I don’t know what that one is called.
Good Morning! I think I have stored up enough energy to be able to go for a short walk.
Look over at the Facebookie thing. GOOD NEWS!
10:07 am on April 26th, 2012
Mom and Daddy do face chats with my girl at college. She says “Sammie, Sammie” so I think it’s her, but it doesn’t smell like her.
10:19 am on April 26th, 2012
I have no idea what skyping is. Good luck Admin.
The ARC is here. Good morning all.
10:25 am on April 26th, 2012
Watched Desert Flower last night, from Netflix. True story about Waris Dirie who walked out of Somalia at age 13(in the late 70s), to avoid an arranged marriage, ended up in London and eventually became a top international model. The serious part of her story was that she became a spokesperson against a form of violence against women, which we will not get into here. After watching the movie, I see why it received a R rating. Pretty graphic and shocking, to say the least.
10:32 am on April 26th, 2012
Wow, Can a contest be far behind?
10:33 am on April 26th, 2012
ARC!….AaaarRRRRRRROOOOOOWWWW!…Only 4 more months before the actual book arrives!…WOOOOOOO!…Although, because it is baseball season, I do not want those months to go by very fast…grunt!
10:43 am on April 26th, 2012
B&M: Yep, more bolts tomorrow. The procedure doesn’t hurt. You are given a muscle relaxant, and are put under general anesthesia. It’s kind of like taking a fifteen minute nap, and you wake up with no recollection as to what’s been done to you. Once in a while my body feels a little sore (the ECT induces a seizure), and my teeth hurt, because during the seizure you are clenching your teeth, and I usually have a bit of a headache, but it’s nothing that two Tylenol can’t fix. ECT now is nothing like it how it was depicted in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” or the movie “Snake Pit.”
Melanie: A leisurely stroll, please! How’s Dan?
Rio: Are you absolutely loving your new computer? 🙂
Tyb???

Staff!…No, but the Spring Boutique is springing up quickly!…snort!…So get busy making whatever you are going to make for that special store. Maybe you could knit a sweater out of Alice’s tail…heh!heh!
10:55 am on April 26th, 2012
Rio, And maybe your could make a key ring out of yours. heh heh
10:58 am on April 26th, 2012
ARC! Just in time for our Spring Boutique, aye Spence?
11:07 am on April 26th, 2012
Alice – Mama says that was not nice! She snorfed coffee right out her nose, she was laughing so hard!
Rose – you are a brave woman, and we truly hope you feel better very soon!
Melanie – SHORT walk – ok?
Spence – congrats on the Sequoyah! It is indeed aptly named, and according to friends in Oklahoma this is a highly regarded award out there.
11:12 am on April 26th, 2012
Congratulations Spence! Mom was born in Oklahoma.
I ditto what Rio said about the book and Baseball season. Spence probably does too.
About Hawks and small dogs:
There is a link on my home age about a hawk snatching the small dog of a grade
11:19 am on April 26th, 2012
I’ll finish the above sentence since it so rudely posted before I was finished.
There is a link on my home page about a hawk snatching a small dog.
11:21 am on April 26th, 2012
Rose! Do you want the Smoochers to come back on Friday? We can easily blurr over from California. I don’t want you to be alone.
Alice & Abbie: Are you enjoying the farm?
Siber: What link? Where?
11:32 am on April 26th, 2012
Masquers, if you can get to MSN’s home page, the link can be found under their entertainment news section
I’ll explain: The dog belonged to a very minor celebrity type woman. Her two small dogs went out to pee and one was injured by the hawk and is still at the vet, and the other dog is just plain gone.
11:41 am on April 26th, 2012
If you look closely, the background in the picture of the ARC is Rio and Sam’s comments from yesterday, 9:55 and 9:59 AM.
11:43 am on April 26th, 2012
Wolfie, Any updates on the boys?
Any news on Dan?
We had a hawk attack on a mama hen and her two chicks a couple of years ago. It was not a pretty sight! I know they have to eat, but GAH!
11:47 am on April 26th, 2012
And that minor celeb is very thankful for the support she is receiving on tweets.
I am sorry about the dogs.
Back from my walk. It was short. But it felt good to get out. Spring has sprung, the Skunk Cabbage is rid, I can hear where the birdies is.
Rose, I actually googled what you are doing when you first posted. Very interesting. Hope this works. Hugs
11:48 am on April 26th, 2012
Darn iPaw! The Skunk Cabbage is RIZ, I tell you RIZ.
Dan’s out for tests. Hopefully know more later.
11:50 am on April 26th, 2012
Oh, that is cool. B.Stover is correct! You can see the blog.
12:01 pm on April 26th, 2012
Siber-H: Is this the same story Kirby was talking about last night? Gulp. Very scary stuff. When my brother, sister and I were small pups a owl made a late night appearance to the dog run. His nefarious intentions were thwarted by our pop, who luckily happened to be in the vicinity. Chicken wire over the dog run took care of any future problems.
Members of the Raptor family are quite dangerous for small animals, which are considered their prey. I remember seeing a up close video of a owl flying into camera range. Not the wise old owl of fable, but a fierce predator.
Sammy: Check out this link: http://www.birding.about.com/od/birdingbasics/a/Protect-Pets-From-Birds-Of-Prey.htm
12:04 pm on April 26th, 2012
no, No, NO. Even though sometimes called a Border Collie, Masquers was never a small “pup”. Gah.
B: Thanks for pointing that out to us!
12:10 pm on April 26th, 2012
Masquers, It is the exact same hawk story that Kirby made a link to last night. I went back and checked and sure nuff.
We have skunk cabbage here after the summer rains. It stands out because it is very green.
12:14 pm on April 26th, 2012
Masquers, thanks for that link. Mom says I have to stay in the house. Molly’s Mom takes me out on a leash, but since that hawk wanted to eat me, that’s not happening either.
12:30 pm on April 26th, 2012
Thanks for that link. Barb doesn’t worry about me since I am not small prey, but she did feel really bad when she unknowlingly set that hen up for a hawk’s meal. She had her and the baby chicks in a 8 x 8 dog kennel, and had a dog crate in there that she locked them into at night. Imagine her shock when she checked them at noon, and there wasn’t much left of the hen, and both babies were mia. After that she had chicken wire put over the top, and never had anoter problem.
When the chickens are out in their large grass area, the roosters always alert to danger – they have one sound for airbrone danger, and a different one for ground predators. They are not known for their brillance tho, so they will alert for low flying airplanes. Better safe than sorry!
12:31 pm on April 26th, 2012
Melanie: Thanks for the hugs!
Masquers: I think Wolfie’s mom may need some extra care. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t enjoy the Smoocher’s company. I always feel much better after your visits.
Rio: You, Spence, and Wookie are up top with your Rockies hats on!
12:34 pm on April 26th, 2012
Posts!…Does this mean the Publicist actually reads the blog?…sniff!
12:41 pm on April 26th, 2012
Chickens!…heh!snort!heh!…Low flying planes!
12:56 pm on April 26th, 2012
Sammy: There must be a solution. You simply cannot be stuck inside the house all the time! Any chance of a covered dog run in your future? We still like Tupper & Gilly’s umbrella solution for your walks. A light coat of mail also might do the trick (grasping at straws here)
Barb&Magpie: The chicken wire worked great here also, but it was mainly used on the ends of the kennel where I made my Great Escapes. Not to say I didn’t somehow always find a way…a loose board and…what can I say? Heh, heh…the phrase, smarter than the average Bear comes to mind.
12:58 pm on April 26th, 2012
Bear, Why are you using past tense? Do you no longer try to escape? Just thought I would ask before Rio does. Heh!
1:16 pm on April 26th, 2012
Sam, I don’t know if hawks eat skunks but maybe you could try this …
1:16 pm on April 26th, 2012
Barb!…Bear is Dead. He posts posthumously…snort!
1:31 pm on April 26th, 2012
Rio, You don’t know that for sure!
1:33 pm on April 26th, 2012
Barb!…Yes!…snort!…Its not my fault you have short-term memory…grunt!
1:39 pm on April 26th, 2012
Which is why he’s called Bear “Spirit” Dog I think.
I think Sam should get one of those skunk costumes.
1:51 pm on April 26th, 2012
Bella, if you get a moment please check SDD.
Now about the store. I have a photo from B.Stover, not sure I want to tell you what it is because I love it!
Anyhoo, if you have sent me a picture in the last three weeks, please know that it is not with me any longer. Please send again.
It is now cloudy and cold. Had to shut the house up again. Looks like our last frost is going to be Monday night (maybe). Which is good. Things have come in and need to be planted!
1:55 pm on April 26th, 2012
Bear isn’t dead. He posts from Rainbow Bridge and other beautiful places in the next life.
I do not think a skunk costume would stop a hawk. Sibers and coyotes aren’t afraid of skunks so maybe a hawk isn’t either.
1:58 pm on April 26th, 2012
We thought Bear was always a little vague about his energy form. That is not really the same as short term memory loss. Is it?
2:24 pm on April 26th, 2012
Melanie: Decoded and responded.
Rose: Belle Starr packed her sparkly pink backpack with only the necessities—dress collar, chapstick, a dog blanket from the race to tuck around you and one for Masquers although she was worried that it isn’t a special Kat-dog blanket, Swedish fish, honey for your hair because she didn’t like the ‘product’ you had in your hair last time and Luna. There was a lot of mumbling going on along the lines of, “Hope Masquers is ready to go,” “…shouldn’t have left her in the feat place,” “still don’t understand what is meant by ‘kat.’ I will have to look it up.”
A few winters ago, AJ was on a run. As he was out on the trail a raven started flying above the team and followed him back to the kennel. The next mornin we had a murder of ravens. We never had ravens around before that winter. Later, when Patsy Anne was a brand new mama, a very daring raven poked his head into the new mama’s house where was caring for her brood. When I arrived home I found the large chunks of wha remained of the raven in he puppy pen and black feathers everywhere. It was a few weeks before the ravens returned, but they don’t bother Patsy Anne. I think she sent a clear message that day.
2:36 pm on April 26th, 2012
Hurrah for all Dogs named PATSY! Don’t mess with them!
2:38 pm on April 26th, 2012
I, Bear, am always HERE in the NOW which is the only place there is.
2:42 pm on April 26th, 2012
Dead!…As a Doornail!..sniff!
Melanie!…What exactly do you mean the photos aren’t with you any longer?….grunt!
2:42 pm on April 26th, 2012
Hi everybuddy!
I haven’t been getting on the computer often as Mom is busy using it a lot these days. I got a big surprise on Monday when I had snow to play in again. Weird – we had summer weather a month ago! Did you guys get snow Monday?
I’m mad at Mom ’cause she doesn’t play outside with me for long – she says that it’s too cold but she wouldn’t be cold if she’d put her jacket on. GGRRR! She doesn’t like the rain, either. I admit that I don’t like rain and I always point it out to her when it starts. Oh! I don’t know why I go inside when it gets wet. It just seems like the right thing to do.
2:46 pm on April 26th, 2012
I have taken Sammie for only one walk since the hawk problem. It was too hard for me to walk because my eyes were glued to the sky.
2:47 pm on April 26th, 2012
Oh!…Brother!..grunt!
2:49 pm on April 26th, 2012
Security is lax around here!!

2:49 pm on April 26th, 2012
Riö, I hit buttons I shouldn’t have when I was exhausted.
Terri, the Newf Pack totally agrees with you.
Hmm, just want you to know that I hate cardiologists. The one that visited Dan in the hospital told him he could go home!
Of course, the neurologist and the geriatrics doctors don’t agree with that. Guess one Dan listened to?
I am once again on his SOL list.
2:51 pm on April 26th, 2012
We really enjoy doing Facetime with the grandkids on my wife’s iPhone.
3:04 pm on April 26th, 2012
Melanie, I think you might take up long term residencey there!
Barb’s bro, the doc. says cardiologist’s egos are only outranked by those of brain surgeons.
3:16 pm on April 26th, 2012
Surgeons!…If I were a Brain Surgeon I’d have a big head too…snort!
3:22 pm on April 26th, 2012
Rebecca: I hope it is the blanket with the frogs on it!
T&G: Thank you for your well wishes!
3:29 pm on April 26th, 2012
Siber-H would be one to agree with you about the rain…and the snow. Looks like you’re having a great time there!
Melanie: Knowing Dan’s medical history, we are wondering why that neurologist would say what he did to Dan. Hmm…one would almost think he hadn’t read his chart.
The blog is still slow in refreshing, but better than yesterday.
3:41 pm on April 26th, 2012
Just refreshed and there was a picture of me, me, me!
Melanie, If Dan spends 3 days or more in the hospital, can’t he then be covered by Medicare to go to a nursing home for awhile.
3:47 pm on April 26th, 2012
Hi Terri & Steve!
Terri: That’s a nice photo.
Bella: The term “a murder of…..” takes on a whole new meaning in that story of Patsy Anne. Never mess around with a mother, bear or otherwise.
Tell Belle Starr my motto is: “Have Knapsack Will Travel”. I can be ready at the flick of a tail.
3:50 pm on April 26th, 2012
Three cheers for Patsy Anne!! I have always wanted to get a Raven. When mom and I go for a walk in the desert the stupid Ravens just stand there as we walk by and, of course, I am on a leash and the dang birds know it.
3:58 pm on April 26th, 2012
Rose, maybe Belle Starr will bring the blanket with the baseballs on it.
Mom and I will be thinking of you tomorrow and wishing you all the best. You are brave girl and we are very proud to know you.
Most times it seems like one doctor doesn’t know what another doctor is doing with the same patient and the patient or family has to tell them.
HI Terri and Steve, Wish I had been there to play in the snow with Terri. It has been very hot here for this time of year.
4:05 pm on April 26th, 2012
Have we heard much from Wookie since he was found with a bottle of Cahors next to his ‘legal briefs’ in his briefcase yesterday?
Patsy Anne is a sweet, timid girl but that raven crossed a line. Her father, Fargo my main lead dog and the alpha of the kennel went fang to fang with a wolf a few years back. We were certain that was the end of his racing career. He would not be denied. Later that season, he lead AJ to a first place finish in a 300 mile qualifier.
4:08 pm on April 26th, 2012
Yes, Barb & MagPie, he has a bed in the rehab facility. He will need PT and some other things before he comes home again. Other things? Will know more if the other docs ever call us.
Seriously thinking of a V*E*T.
4:40 pm on April 26th, 2012
Rose: I’ll be thinking about you. Please let us know when you get back home.
Hi Terri (love the picture) and Steve.
4:58 pm on April 26th, 2012
The Raven – one of my favorite poems!
5:00 pm on April 26th, 2012
Gah! I meant to say third place finish in my post about Fargo.
5:20 pm on April 26th, 2012
I think that is a fitting end to a Raven who had his eye on a little puppy morsel. Don’t mess with Mama!
5:33 pm on April 26th, 2012
SiberH: I would love the blanket with the baseballs! Thank you for your good wishes.
Thanks, B! I’ll post as soon as I get home tomorrow.
Patsy Anne, you rock! No wonder the Prof is crushing on you….he likes strong women!
5:46 pm on April 26th, 2012
B&M: Those little morsels are little no more. They, Jem and Radley of the To Kill a Mockingbird litter, are now two years old.
Rose: Patsy Anne wanted to join the Smoochers, but Belle Starr had a fit. I think she is scared that she wouldn’t get all the attention she believes she deserves.
5:55 pm on April 26th, 2012
Snowhook!… I’ve just come back from the Snowhook Blog…snort!…There is lots of new stuff out there. Especially if you haven’t checked it since early March like me….heh!heh!
5:59 pm on April 26th, 2012
Rio: Don’t get too excited. I’m currently working in a handful I new posts for that there blog.
6:05 pm on April 26th, 2012
Rebecca: There is enough love and adoration to go around for everybody. Belle knows she’s my special girl….
6:50 pm on April 26th, 2012
Dan the Man update!
Dan will be leaving the hospital tomorrow (hopefully) to go to the Rehab facility. He will be there for some time. Not sure how long. He will be doing PT and having his meds balanced. He has started a new medication that is actually used for all his symptoms. Most people only used it for one or two of those symptoms, but Dan has them all!
I had to tell OTAS that Dan will not be able to make it to the wedding. OTAS thought that is the way it was going to be. He’s sort of okay about it. Have to figure out how to do a Skype of the wedding.
Guess I’ll have to ask Spencer how to do this?
6:54 pm on April 26th, 2012
Mom just discovered a book that she knows the rest of you must have read, “The Art of Racing in the Rain”. She just can’t put it down! She got it at a book fair last weekend when a friend said that it was her very favorite book.
7:20 pm on April 26th, 2012
Macy: The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of our all time favorites too!
Melanie: Skype could be the answer to Dan not being able to attend the wedding. The family can rest easy knowing he is getting the attention and constant supervision that he needs at this time.
7:35 pm on April 26th, 2012
Melanie, Thanks for all the updates on Dan you have given us. Your family is in our prayers. I sure hope Skype can work for you guys and the wedding.
7:36 pm on April 26th, 2012
“The Art of Racing in the Rain” is one of my favorite books too!!
Melanie: Skype is very cool, and a nice way for Dan to share in the festivities! It can’t be too difficult…The Prof figured it out in no time.
7:39 pm on April 26th, 2012
Just got a call from YSAS and Hamlet as they are getting ready for their play series DEBT.
I expected some thing for “Momanager” (as YSAS calls me) to do or write or whatever.
I was put on speaker phone . . . The question???
Which Weasley brother worked with Dragons? Snicker …
No problem . . Charlie
7:45 pm on April 26th, 2012
Thank you Melanie for the update. Rehab is probably the best and safest place for him right now. Hope the new med. does the job.
I guess we are in the minority here. Read Racing in the Rain. Liked it, didn’t love it. Sorry.
7:58 pm on April 26th, 2012
Is YSAS still hanging around with Othello? After the way he punched him in the face. All that blood.
8:08 pm on April 26th, 2012
Barb and Maggie – we are in the real minority. We have never even heard of Racing in the Rain
Hi everyone – been kind of crazy busy here. Not only does Mama have two shows coming up, and the Bear to finish, and a gala wedding to attend- our Dad came down with the stomach bug the other day. Now, we are not saying he is a sissy, but according to him,no one in the history of the world has ever been as sick as he was, or needed as much care as he did. ( and this despite the fact that Mama had the same bug the other day)
So – what’s new?
8:10 pm on April 26th, 2012
Barb, We are in the minority with you…just thought The Art of Racing in the Rain was ok.
Macy, Many people loved that book.
8:14 pm on April 26th, 2012
Rebecca!…snort!….You need to start planning you advertising campaign for the Spring Boutique…sniff!….You can’t just open it one day and expect tons of customers to flock to it, unless they are Plunderer, Shoppers Extraordinaire
8:50 pm on April 26th, 2012
Siber and T & G, Now we don’t feel all alone!
8:52 pm on April 26th, 2012
Oops – I mean Hamlet. Either way that guy is bad, I tell you bad!
8:55 pm on April 26th, 2012
Staff read racing in the rain. It was sad at the end, but you know that going in. Sad in a hopeful way. I gave it a 4 out of 5. Very rarely do books get a 5 from her. Unless you are
P.G. Wodehouse.
8:56 pm on April 26th, 2012
Yes, Rebecca, that there Cahors was just fine, slurp …burp. Almost as good as Mr. Redbone’s ‘shine.
Macy, we are in the camp of truly loving The Art of Racing in the Rain. Just terrific. But it is definitely a book that has both incredible admirers and others who are lukewarm at best.
Wookie
8:56 pm on April 26th, 2012
Sammie!…Theres many a time I’ve wished Out Damned Spot! – does that make me a bad guy?…snort!
9:08 pm on April 26th, 2012
Sam: Now I’m curious. Why are Othello and Hamlet “bad”?
Lady Macbeth says “Out damn spot.”
9:13 pm on April 26th, 2012
B., a day or two ago there was a picture of Hamlet punching our dear YSAS in the face. There was a lot of blood.
9:15 pm on April 26th, 2012
Yeep!….Thunder!….yeep!….Beau doesn’t seem to mind Thunder and Lightning…wheeze!…That Show-off….grunt!
9:18 pm on April 26th, 2012
Hamlet!… I wasn’t pretending to be Hamlet, I was just making reference to the play as it pertained to my daily life….sniff!
9:24 pm on April 26th, 2012
I see. Sam is referring to the actor.
9:26 pm on April 26th, 2012
“Out damned spot” is from the play Macbeth….my favorite.
9:29 pm on April 26th, 2012
Spot!…See Spot Run!….heh!
9:33 pm on April 26th, 2012
Hamlet!…Well, whats a famous quote from Hamlet that would pertain to my daily life?…sniff!…Thats what I want to know.
9:41 pm on April 26th, 2012
To be or not to be? Hamlet is questioning living. “Me thinks the queen protests too much.” He means his mother, the queen, is promising too much and she won’t be able to fulfill the promises.
9:44 pm on April 26th, 2012
My apologies to B for the following:
To snort or not to snort, that is the…burp.
9:46 pm on April 26th, 2012
Sam, Hamlet and YSAS are like brothers. Blood one minute and jokes the next!
YSAS did say he had to put more blood on the tee shirt for the play. Who knows what they’ll come up with this time.
B.Stover, YSAS did a huge paper on The Scottish Play. His idea was that no matter what culture the play was able to resonate with the people of the land. He compared English, Zulu, Japanese and then an American movie called “Scotland, PA”. He had seen the RSC’s “Macbeth” and “uMabatha” in England. Both excellent productions. I can’t remember the name of the Japanese movie. And “Scotland, PA” was great. It had Christopher Walken in it. Whew! Netflix has it on DVD. Anyhoo, he did a great job on the paper.
Time for bed. The snoring down here is putting me to sleep and the passing of Newf gas is making me pass out.
TTFN
9:46 pm on April 26th, 2012
Wookie’s post reminded us. Would you believe that there is a burger-bar out here called The Slurp & Burp? I am not kidding!
One of the many reasons we have to move.
Maybe youse should slud on over for a shot and a beer. That bar stool next to me ain’t tooken!
9:47 pm on April 26th, 2012
Hmmm!…To Pee Or Not To Pee, that is the question…snort!…She doth protest too much if Beau (heh) does not make it outside…sniff!…But she never promises us anything…grunt!…We take it all for granted…wuffle!
9:50 pm on April 26th, 2012
We are also in the camp that loves Enzo!
9:52 pm on April 26th, 2012
Looks like Barb is on her way to the Stovernia Correctional Facility for Delinquet Plunderers with her last post.
9:53 pm on April 26th, 2012
Barb!…She is definitely in the Stovernia Prison now!…heh!heh!…Many charges can be made against her. None being the baseball word however…snuff!
9:53 pm on April 26th, 2012
Did no one but me see Melanie’s picture of Hamlet punching YSAS right in the face?
