“Here’s something we know a little bit about, big guy,” Bernie says. “Remember the case in To Fetch A Thief?”
To Fetch A Thief – that was the Peanut case, right? No way I’ll be forgetting that any time soon. But Peanut was now safe on that elephant sanctuary in Tennessee, so what was this all about?
“I’m talking about the big illegal trade in exotic animals,” Bernie says.
Oh, yeah, that part.
“Here’s a German guy, Sven Koppler, arrested for mailing live tarantulas into the country through the U.S. postal service. He put them into plastic straws or little plastic containers, and in a routine inspection postal agents found them tapping their legs against the sides of the containers. Kind of a little dance in boxes.”
Yeah, but scary. I’ve seen tarantulas out in the canyon. Most bugs: no problem. But tarantulas – yikes.
“Seems they’re highly valued by collectors. Females of breeding age can cost up to $1000 each, and this guy’s latest shipment included more than a thousand. Do the math.”
Some other time.
