Tarantula Tarantella

“Here’s something we know a little bit about, big guy,” Bernie says. “Remember the case in To Fetch A Thief?”

To Fetch A Thief – that was the Peanut case, right? No way I’ll be forgetting that any time soon. But Peanut was now safe on that elephant sanctuary in Tennessee, so what was this all about?

“I’m talking about the big illegal trade in exotic animals,” Bernie says.

Oh, yeah, that part.

“Here’s a German guy, Sven Koppler, arrested for mailing live tarantulas into the country through the U.S. postal service. He put them into plastic straws or little plastic containers, and in a routine inspection postal agents found them tapping their legs against the sides of the containers. Kind of a little dance in boxes.”

Yeah, but scary. I’ve seen tarantulas out in the canyon. Most bugs: no problem. But tarantulas – yikes.

“Seems they’re highly valued by collectors. Females of breeding age can cost up to $1000 each, and this guy’s latest shipment included more than a thousand. Do the math.”

Some other time.

    Yikes!
Wonder what becomes of 1000 live tarantulas after they are apprehended.

Morning Dawson, Not around here I hope!

Have a friend that lived in Costa Rica for awhile. He got used to the iguanas living in the attic and thundering across the weak ceilings, but got a bit “perturbed”, his word, when going into the bathroom one morning he found a huge tarantula had taken up residence under the sink. He SAID it was the size of a dinner plate.

Also, reminds me of the time we brought the tree in to decorate it (having gone out into the woods and chopping it down, tying it to the car) and since the house was warm, the cocoon thing in the tree opened and we had hundreds of very small praying mantises.

Great Holiday Cheer! snicker. The guys had a blast hunting them all down and catching them.

Taratula the size of a dinner plate under the sink…No way. Hundreds of baby praying mantises…cool.

Having brought up two guys, I quickly learned to hide any feelings of ewwwwwww or yuck.

It’s not so much fun when Mom looks and touches and says, “Wow, now let’s put it back in it’s environment.” Snicker.

Someone forwarded me a “list” of what evers. I totally agree with “There is great need for a sarcasm font.” I would also like a snicker font.

    Morning Sam

Money!…That’s over a million dollars that German guy would have made if it weren’t for those postal workers being on the tip-top of their toes…heh!… What a racket! I have a feeling today is going to be a little squirmy for the likes of Sammie’s gal…chorkel!

    Okay – baby steps:

We did have an avalanche here a few years ago. The steepest hill is on a 63 degree angle and it’s named The Wall. The rescue dogs were called in to help. They are the only dogs allowed to ride on chair lifts here.

Straws!… Now answer me this, how did that guy manage to get 1000+ tarantulas into straws?….snort!… Seems like that process alone would kill the spider…snort!

“The Tarantella Dance music is probably the most recognized song of all the Italian folklore music. It literally means “tarantula” because the dance is done buy everyone in a great big circle going clockwise, until the music in the set changes, becomes faster”…… “You can see this dance at authentic Italian weddings, is often the theme song of many restaurants and pizzerias, can even be heard in The Godfather movie.”

    Awesome MollyPop!

When I could hike and stuff, I thought about training Patsy for S & R. She wouldn’t have been able to go on collapsed buildings like that little Police dog (Momo, I think?) but in the woods or in the water, not a problem.

There is a volunteer S & R team here. I went and met them. Nice group of dogs, and people. One dog has to wear a GPS finder on his vest. He’s very fast and finds people, but forgets to come back to tell anyone. Lots of wood acreage here. People hike, cross country ski and some get lost.

Mollypop: Thank you. Those rescue dogs are amazing…wagging tails when they find someone. I like the dog who knows to turn around and wait for the chair lift. They’re so full of life.

Rio: The tarantella is the dance performed (but off-stage) by Nora the title character in Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House. It’s used as an interesting symbol.

Vaguely remember a discussion about collars for big dogs who try to pull away from their owners when on a leash. I would like the name of a special leash for these kind of dogs…so it doesn’t hurt the dog when you pull back on them and you have more control. Anyone know?
Mollypop: Nice link. The nation within a nation members have many talents. Is Mr. Oncini a friend of yours?

Tarantulas!…. Here are a few facts about the spider….snort!…Don’t feel too bad if the sight of one makes you scream like a 5 year old girl even though they’re harmless…grunt!… They generally don’t bite, and if they do the venom won’t hurt you. The males come out once in 10 years to mate from August to early October then they die a few weeks later….snuff!….No one knows why for certain….snort!…They don’t hurt anybody. So when you see one you should help him find his way around. The poor guys days are numbered. You might as well help make his one outing a pleasant one….heh!…Oh and Tarantulas like to come out at night when it’s cooler. They will go indoors to find a cool spot….wheeze!

Good morning, everyone. Hope all are doing well today.

Brother’s two boys, now 22 and 20 had a pet Tarantula for years. Purchased at a pet store. Barb did not want to hold it.

Barb just opened an early Christmas gift from bro and family. It is a really nice panini maker from William Sonomo, along with a panina recipe book. Everything in it looks scrumptious!

Still very cold here, with possible ice storm coming in a day or two.

Melanie: Thanks for the info on the Wacky Walker.

    11:52 am on December 8th, 2010

    Barb and MagPie!

Great on the sort of good news!?!
Yes, we’re already watching that storm. They are still not sure which way the track is headed.

Tomorrow, Jesse (our go – to guy) will check the generator, make sure all windows tight and look at the pipes, making sure the heat tapes on them are plugged in.

Two years ago an un-forcasted ice storm hit here. No power or hot water for 4 days and nights. Tops of trees were shredded. Kept people employed though.

That’s when we had an electrician come in and hook up a generator to the furnaces, hot water heater, refrigerator, stove, some lights and the COMPUTER!

Hope we don’t need it but yesterday the weathermen kept saying sunshine with an occasional snow flurry. It was cloudy all day with snow. Today they are saying snow, it’s sunny.

  28. B.Stover
    11:52 am on December 8th, 2010

Dawson: The symbolism is complex but put simply, the dance represents Nora’s breaking free of the constraints placed on a 19th-Century wife and mother. (There was a very strict double standard then both culturally and legally.)

That is really interesting Rio. What about the female tarantula? Any info?

B.Stover: In one of Dan’s books, can’t remember which one, he uses “The Doll House” as an indicator (and I know that’s the real word I’m looking for, dang) for the motivation behind one of the characters.

We had an ice storm on Christmas Eve last year, trees looked like there had been a tornado come through, and power was off for 36 hours. Yuck! Temps are supposed to be back in mid 30’s by Saturday, so at least it is warming up.

Barb is afraid to walk out to the chicken coop if there is an ice storm. She does NOT want to fall!

  34. B.Stover
    12:43 pm on December 8th, 2010

Melanie: Do you know what aspect of Doll’s House Dan was referring to? When you say “motivation behind one of the characters” you are referring to a character in Dan’s book right?

  35. B.Stover
    12:45 pm on December 8th, 2010

Is there someone Barb could hire to take care of the chickens for a while?

  36. Melanie

MagPie: do NOT let Barb fall. NOT a good thing. Ow.

B.Stover: Yes, it was a woman whose total life was taken up by the “wife” and “mother” definition. Now that I think of it . . . Dawson, do you remember if that was in “Sightings”?

Melanie and B. – Here’s what Mom likes about her iPad and how she uses it. B’s question yesterday was about the keyboard which is on the screen. Mom has that on her Android phone also so she is getting used to it. If she had a lot of typing to do, she would get a real keyboard for it.

Mom uses it mostly for reading newspapers and playing games. The games are awesome on the iPad. That where she plays all of her games now. Bejeweled always was fun, but not like when you play it on a touch screen. The same with Peggle, another favorite.

Newspapers are free and you just scroll the screen with your finger as you read. She has saved a lot of money on the Buffalo News and the New York Times.

Amazon has an app for the iPad that lets you read your book on the Kindle and the iPad and keeps your place so Mom reads the iPad in the evening when she needs the back lit screen, reads the Kindle when she’s outdoors or at the coffee shop.

  39. B.Stover
    1:08 pm on December 8th, 2010

Thanks Mollypop. I often do a lot of typing for school but I’d probably use my laptop for that anyway. I know that a year-round home delivery subscription to the NYTimes seven days a week is over $600 so the savings with an iPad would be real. On the iPad can you listen to pod casts and view slide shows? If I get an iPad I’ll be asking how to play bejeweled since I’ve never really figured it out. (Does the iPad automatically come with that sky search app and with the piano app?)

Zoë says that a snicker font would look like a certain Pug.

There may be an iPad in Dan or Melanie’s future I think!

Thanks Mollypop. I read in the Technology section in today’s NYTimes that the new iPads are due in April. I’m thinking of waiting until then. When we get to over 100 here on the blog and are on the second page, anytime I refresh it takes me back to the middle of the first page so I have to scroll either up or down, click on next and then scroll down again on page two. It still leaves comments in the comment box after submitting also.

  44. Riö - The Evil Pug
    3:39 pm on December 8th, 2010

Blog-Bugs!…I have those same issues…grunt!… If I post a comment on the second page, it should take me there instead of back to the middle of the first page….cough! …It is time consuming on my old computer to post after the 100 mark….snort!

  45. Barb & Maggie
    3:46 pm on December 8th, 2010

Same here, posting after we hit 100 is more time consuming, for sure. It goes back to page 1, you have to scroll down, hit 2 and page down again to read what you just posted.

    3:55 pm on December 8th, 2010

Tomorrow, at 1 pm our time, please keep Dan in your prayers.

The preliminary reports show a very bad bacterial infection in his right lung. There are protein fibers that formed when the last hospital did not drain his lung correctly. This has caused quite a mass in there.

Unfortunately, antibiotics can not reach this. They will have to take these fibers out by instrument. When they do that, he should be able to breath correctly and be able to use his lungs.

This is a hell of a shock. Yesterday, surgery was the last on the list and now it’s the only thing that will work.

I’ll BBL, have a lot of contacts to reach.

Rio – Siber-H has been busy with his building projects. A couple of days ago Mom went out and forgot to take her phone, so I called Siber-H. He couldn’t come to the phone becase he was outside sleeping in the leaves.

Kirby too!….wheeze!….Where is our pal Kirby?…grump!…I can’t be alone with all these female Kats and Girl dogs all the time… grumble!…I could get into trouble if I say or do something wrong…grunt!

The two awwws are pretty amazing, Rio.

Mollypop, We really enjoyed the video about the avalance rescue dogs. I could do that…sure I could…ummm…no I couldn’t because I would forget about rescuing the victim and just keep on heading North if they were stupid enough to let me off leash.

Rio, maybe the tarantulas that he put into straws were babies…tiny little buggers.

Stover!… At 4:15 (my birthday!) Stover was last heard from!…grunt!… Has she been abducted? Has she fallen and cannot get up? Is she doing research and forgot about us here?…snort!…Where in the world is Stover???…grump!

SiberH!…By George, I think you’ve got it!…snort!…They must have been very young little Tarantulas for someone to fit 1000’s into straws or tiny containers… sigh!…Now I feel better having a solution to this strange question….grunt!…Thank you very much for your amazing logical thinking!…wheeze!… Please say “Hi and Welcome Home” to your Paw for me and remind him to be careful in the back yard…snort!

Rio?? Are you saying that 4:15 today was your birthday?

MagPie!…Stover almost always says goodnight, unless her computer isn’t working properly….hmmm!

SiberH!…She would have told me, and No!…sneeze!

Barb? Someone already asked you this (I think), but do you have someone to take care of the chickens if you have an ice storm? We don’t want you going out there.

Rio, nobody is allowed to go into the backyard except me and mom
because of safety issues…that includes my dad. People have to stay on the concrete patio and can only look at my projects.

Rio is correct on both counts about Stover, I hope she is feeling okay…now I am worried.

Stover!…She was the one to ask Barb and MagPie if they had someone to take care of the chickens for them…snuffle!…Where did you go Stover?…yeep!

SiberH!… You should have someone take a photo of your projects and then send them to Molly so she can post your works of art for us…heh!

Art!…Watching my friend struggle and strive to produce creative stuff…snort!… I have to believe that everyone has some sort of artistist abilitie within them…heh!…I mean, if she can do it, anyone can…heh!

Tonight!…She decided eating was more important than working on her project for Grandma…sigh!…Now it is too late to get all the stuff out and organized for the crucial putting together part..grunt!

You are right Rio, Bee always say Good Night to us.

We do have someone we could ask to go out to the chicken coop if it was absolutely necessary, but Barb doesn’t like to ask. We will see how the storm develops. Snow is ok – ice is worse.

We are heading off to dream land, too. Hope Bee is ok. She probably had company or went out to dinner.
