Sweet And Sour
“Here’s some news from Shanghai,” Bernie says.
I perk up right away. Shanghai Gardens is one of my favorite restaurants, a tiny place in a strip mall beside Cash Your Check, which was running a scam I never really understood, and our client wasn’t really that happy in the end, although her shooting spree thing was uncalled for, Bernie said, but forget all that, the point being that that was how we got to meet Dominic Wu, chef at Shanghai Gardens. We drive up out back and he comes out with a bag of Sweet and Sour Ribs, every time! So: are we on our way?
“Seems they’re restricting dog ownership to one per family,” Bernie says.
Huh? Is this about Dominic? There are no members at all of the nation within at Shanghai Gardens.
“Zero tolerance,” Bernie says. “There are now twenty million people in Shanghai and eight hundred thousand dogs.” He looks up at me. “What if there’s something in humans that induces us to continually create problems we can’t solve?”
Meaning we’re not going to Shanghai Gardens? I go to the corner and lie down. Sigh.

The Pack says: Toss the two legged ones out of Shanghai, leaving open all the places with Sweet and Sour ribs and leave everything to the Nation within the Nation.
Yikes Frank! Stop drooling on the keyboard. uydfrijoehvgqew Mac! Stop pawing at the computer!
Jeez, these dogkjgkjgjihlkdlhk
Rose! Bring it back NOW!
4:29 am on November 15th, 2010
Haven't read yesterdays or today's posts. Just caught up with Saturday's and wanted to quick post our prayers and good thoughts to Barb. We know all will be fine, but hate she has to go thru this. Poor Maggie, she'll be so worried at that B&B until she sees her mom is okay.
Boy, you are out of pocket for a couple of days and things happen!!
4:39 am on November 15th, 2010
Whew! That is some third sentence Chet! Sorry you aren't getting ribs.
Good morning all.
5:17 am on November 15th, 2010
Good morning all,
Goodness Melanie is having trouble with the Neuf's this morning. Sounds like they might want to blog too. I wonder what Rose has taken?
BStover are you feeling better?
Gus and BooBear, Nice to have you back.
5:18 am on November 15th, 2010
Bee: Mom used to work at a newspaper where the competition had a reporter who wrote like Chet — phrase upon phrase upon phrase. When the newspaper would come out each week, her staff would entertain themselves counting words in his sentences. It's been a long time so she can't remember what his record was, but it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 100! Come to think of it, that newspaper was in Massachusetts — maybe that's where Spence got the idea for Chet's writing style!!!
5:20 am on November 15th, 2010
Rose: If you know what's good for you, you'll bring it back to Melanie ASAP!!!
5:22 am on November 15th, 2010
Oooh, mailman, mailman!!! Drat, nothing for me. But Mom says even if she didn't have a calendar she'd know Christmas was coming just by the number of catalogs she gets every day!!!
6:02 am on November 15th, 2010
Note to self: Do not leave breakfast plate near the edge of desk.
Gus and BooBear: Glad you are back. Hope the being "out of pocket" was for something fun.
Is it possible for you to e-mail me the map of all of our whereabouts? B.Stover wants one too, and said I could send you her e-mail address.
I'm upstairs for most of the day. I have a cold and I'm trying not to give it to Dan. I had written down some questions and remarks about the blog last night and then left the list downstairs. Jeez.
I have the humidifier on, drinking fluids and taking at easy. The door is open so dogs can visit.
6:04 am on November 15th, 2010
Oo, oo, oo, I remember one!
Riö telling B. Stover how to sleep sitting up had Zoë and me in stitches!!
6:22 am on November 15th, 2010
I appreciate Rio's very clear instructions on how to sleep sitting up but it sounds as though I'd have to do the splits with my "hind legs" and that isn't going to happen. (That sentence does not come close to Chet's.)
Actually I could sleep last night lying down so I finally got some sleep. However, I'm not really feeling any better. Thank you for asking Alice.
Sorry about your cold Melanie. I wonder how Barb is doing.
6:26 am on November 15th, 2010
I'm hoping benign for Barb or at least contained.
My sister had a contained breast cancer, and is doing well. My cousin had a double mastectomy. She's doing great. In fact, I want to be her when I grow up! Wind surfing, kayaking, mountain climbing, and she just got married. Wow. She's ten years older than I am, so there's still hope!
6:34 am on November 15th, 2010
Snow!… It sounds like my friend had a very bad commute again this morning….snort!…. She says she despises all weather men and their families. They were touting no snow except for the mountains while she was driving in yet another dense snowstorm….growl! …”Bunch of flaming idiots!”…I feel sorry for her co-workers today… yeep!
6:35 am on November 15th, 2010
Here's an article on the phases of the moon. It says that "'quarter' refers to the extent of the moon's cycle around the earth not its shape."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phases_of_the_moon#N…
6:56 am on November 15th, 2010
Thanks B.Stover: Now I must read it when I can focus. It does bring up other questions. Since the orbit of the moon is in the same eliptical plane as ours is to the sun (I think) does that mean a full moon would look different to C.Harris than to Wölfie or Siber-H? Must ponder. . .
Will give my brain something to obsess about rather than my nose.
6:58 am on November 15th, 2010
Riö: If your friend has been driving to the "not so busy place" does she turn off the computer? Do you have your own pug size computer? One for pug size paws?
7:11 am on November 15th, 2010
Scarecrow!….Go back to bed…sniff! ….Now the sun is shining and I bet she is mad as hell because these freakish snowstorms are happening during the time she is driving…heh!
7:23 am on November 15th, 2010
This post is for BStover.
I am taking a break from more graphic fiction to read a little Georgette Heyer. Here are a few sentences from Cotillion
"It's my belief, Kit, the woman's touched in her upper works."
"No, she is merely addicted to poetry," explained Kitty.
"Well, that just shows you!" said Mr. Standen reasonably.
7:43 am on November 15th, 2010
Spence wrote this on Facebook:
"Chet and Bernie are deep in the woods with a hiking guide named Turk who doesn't seem too fond of Chet, although Bernie doesn't know."
7:44 am on November 15th, 2010
Thank you Staff! Isn't that wonderful!
8:09 am on November 15th, 2010
And this is just for Rio,

Abbie was not happy to be caught in this pose this morning. She sat up straight immediately after I snapped this pic. She seems to have a rather stern look in her eyes, but I took it anyway.
8:10 am on November 15th, 2010
Hmmm,
Maybe that is a pleading look. As in, "Please don't post that picture. Please!"
8:10 am on November 15th, 2010
Melanie, I need you to ponder on that moon thing because now you have got me wondering about it. I do know that a full moon is much more impressive when you see it someplace like Dallas rather than here. That has to do with the amount of atmosphere and humidity it is seen through rather than an eliptical plane.
You do not need to ponder when you have a cold. My mom does not ponder much of anything when she has a cold. I'm sorry you have a cold. Mom is always thankful that dogs can't catch them.
Stover, I'm sorry you aren't feeling any better. I'm glad you are going back to the doctor tomorrow.
Thinking of both Barb and Maggie, but I know they will be fine.
8:13 am on November 15th, 2010
Melanie, I may be little but sometimes I get dishes too. Yesterday my boy left the bowl from ice cream right on the little side table. I climbed up the couch, out onto the arm and then on the table. Wouldn't you know, just then Aunt Mollysmom comes walking in. Busted!
8:17 am on November 15th, 2010
AbbieTheKat!… I’m glad to see you are trying my “Sleep Sitting Up” technique!…snort!… You just need to put your other paw down for more stability…heh! …I still think Stover should try this….sniffle!
8:19 am on November 15th, 2010
Stover? What Spence posted on Facebook…is that about book #4?
I hope so because I see a really interesting book in just that one sentence, but Chet isn't narrating it
Abbie…That is a Monday morning pose if I ever saw one.
8:24 am on November 15th, 2010
Sam! You sound like a circus performer!
Siber-H: Thanks, I will ponder tomorrow instead.
Today will be short pithy comments, hopefully written while I'm awake.
Bess has been eyeing the keyboard. I think she wants to take over.
8:42 am on November 15th, 2010
SH: Yes it refers to book 4. He's answering a question about what will come up in the future. Here is the beginning of the sentence I quoted above: "Right now, though, Chet and Bernie are deep in the woods…."
8:48 am on November 15th, 2010
Riö: Shhh, Melanie is asleep, snoring away. I read that you're going to visit Spence. Can he pick me up on the way back to his house? The TV and computer sound good. Though we'lll have to talk about the remote. I would like to go on the beach walks. I could do that with Wöökie. You could ride on my back.
Darn, she's waking up . . .
8:49 am on November 15th, 2010
Whew, It was just a large snort. Anyway, this is Bess signing off. Give our secret signal if this works for you.
8:55 am on November 15th, 2010
Thanks Stover…argh, We have a long wait for this book, but I know it will be a good one.
Hey! Hi Bess!!! I won't be going to Cape Cod with you guys. I have seen the maps. It is surrounded by water!
8:58 am on November 15th, 2010
Bess!… Oh, I will definitely make Spencer stop for you before we head up North for Wookie…heh!… Oh what fun we are going to have…snort!… The remote is mine, no bones about it….grunt!

Mike Baker – The peterabrahams.com web site has been hacked!
9:10 am on November 15th, 2010
WHAAATT!?
9:10 am on November 15th, 2010
Molly!…Is it safe to go out to the website, or should we stay away from it? …grunt!
9:14 am on November 15th, 2010
It's probably safe but who knows. I was there and my heavy-duty virus protector didn't make a fuss. Mom, who is supposed to be retired, is beta testing anti-virus software using cloud computing.
The site just has a bunch of revolutionary flags waving and some strange language.
9:17 am on November 15th, 2010
If that site is running on Mike Baker's computer, that's what was broken into.
9:18 am on November 15th, 2010
Creepy!…I'm not going out there!..snort!.. If I accidentally infect her computer she will K-I-L-L me…grunt!
9:19 am on November 15th, 2010
Molly!…Do you think this blog is at risk right now?…sniff!
9:58 am on November 15th, 2010
Very Good Question, Rio
10:02 am on November 15th, 2010
I'm dying to look at it, but mom says, NO!
10:10 am on November 15th, 2010
Rio, What you were saying about the snow earlier…a pileup involving 34 vehicles has closed Interstate 25 south of Denver. Ice on the road.
10:11 am on November 15th, 2010
Just caught up with Sat & Sun posts and will have to read today's after work.
Melanie, I will be happy to email you the map (hopefully that won't be too hard for Mom) and if you can send me B's email address, I will send it to her as well. But it will be this evening before she can access it.
In our prayers, Barb!
10:12 am on November 15th, 2010
Or you can forward it to her if she prefers, Melanie .
10:17 am on November 15th, 2010
OMG!…. Don’t tell my friend she will be freaking out even more ….grunt! ….She’s a bundle of nerves by the time she gets to the busy place on days like this… snort!

This blog is in danger just as they all are and it depends how good the security is.
The group is called TheWayEnd and the flag it flies is red with a star and a crescent. I googled them and they proudly list all the sites they have hacked.
10:26 am on November 15th, 2010
Nice!…Probably a bunch of 12 year olds messing around in the computer lab at school….grump!
10:28 am on November 15th, 2010
What a nice nap! Those are nasty looking pictures Riö.
I am always amazed at the people who think they can drive what they consider a normal speed on ice.
My niece had an accident in snow a few years ago. YSAS was with her. He kept telling me "She was NOT speeding, she was going under the speed limit." And I kept saying, "If she had an accident then she was going too fast than the weather permitted."
Talk about a chasm of teenage versus adult hood. Anyhoo, he understand it's now AND he understands why we like the Subaru up here in the hills. As a teenager it was not a "cool" looking car.
Any way, I'll BBL, Bess is fussing about the remote. I think she's lost it or the batteries have gone out, but she keeps saying, "Darn, remote, I'll remote him."
10:29 am on November 15th, 2010
Rio – Are those pictures near you?
10:30 am on November 15th, 2010
Rio – Those 12-year-olds speak arabic of some kind.
10:35 am on November 15th, 2010
Molly!…Can you decipher the Arabic?…grunt!… It probably says, “Udate your website Abrahams it’s a disgrace! – signed Mike Baker” …heh!
10:36 am on November 15th, 2010
Ha ha.
10:36 am on November 15th, 2010
Hey, maybe PA didn't pay his bill. This is Mike Baker's revenge.
10:37 am on November 15th, 2010
MollyPop: Tell your friend that "beta testing anti-virus software using cloud computing" sounds like it is beautiful.
10:47 am on November 15th, 2010
Melanie – Mom says it is beautiful. She always thinks of angels sitting on a fluffy cloud.
It is beautiful in a computer way too because it does a lot of work off of your computer so there's no slow down. It's very powerful.
10:50 am on November 15th, 2010
Molly!..Is The Charming Mr. Abrahams website still hacked?…grunt!
10:52 am on November 15th, 2010
Rio – Yes.
11:03 am on November 15th, 2010
That looks like a terrible auto accident. I hope it isn't. All we have from Rio's storm are a few dark clouds whizzing by and a not too bad wind.
Why in the world would those idiots choose PA's website to hack? It is a good thing Molly found it and not me. She knew right away what had happened. I might have just thought that PA's website was getting really trippy.
Mom won't let me google TheWayEnd. She says the FBI might come after me.
11:03 am on November 15th, 2010
Okay Gang – I need some help here. I'm on Google Earth and I'm walking down Main St. in Falmouth, Mass. Where do I go now to find PA?
11:06 am on November 15th, 2010
My lips are sealed!
11:19 am on November 15th, 2010
C'mon Melanie, spill the beans. This is all part of planning our next Mission. We have to reconnoiter.
11:23 am on November 15th, 2010
Sorry MollyPop, All I got was a post office box address to send the Puppy book to. So I can't help you there.
I like Riö's idea of the tennis courts. If your friend could hack into one of the satellites and go to where one of PA's signings is and then follow him back??
Of course, you'd have to know what kind of car he drives. .
11:24 am on November 15th, 2010
Golly!… You guys sound like a couple of stalkers!…yeep!
11:26 am on November 15th, 2010
Siber-H – The FBI just might get you. Hee hee.
Remember when my family was in Wash., D.C. and had trouble with the Secret Service? Sam's Mom, in total frustration, got out of the car and announced to some guys in suits that she was a crazy woman. Fortunately she's still here and not in custody.
Then we found out later when Sam's girl was standing in the street these guys were guarding and they made her get back on the sidewalk that there were snipers.
11:59 am on November 15th, 2010
I do remember, Molly. That was a strange time for you guys not knowing what was going on. I'm here in NM making wild guesses for you guys as to what could be happening. It doesn't surprise me that there were snipers.
12:23 pm on November 15th, 2010
Siber-H – That made it funnier. You're in NM and you're telling us what was going on.
1:02 pm on November 15th, 2010
Actually Riö, I was thinking of that movie that had the very young college students in it. They found out that they were working on weapons, so took over a satellite, fired a laser at it and popped LOTS of popcorn.
Can't remember the name though.
1:42 pm on November 15th, 2010
Got it:
Real Genius
1985 with Val Kilmer and Gabriel Jarret
1:49 pm on November 15th, 2010
Whew, can't keep my eyes open any longer. . . TTFN
2:17 pm on November 15th, 2010
The peterabrahams.com web site has been repaired.
2:31 pm on November 15th, 2010
Scarecrow!…We do not watch any movies with Val Kilmer in it…Ever….snort!
2:52 pm on November 15th, 2010
Barb!…Too bad Bard does not have someone there who can update us on how her surgery went today…sniffle!…I’ve been thinking of her all day long. In fact I woke up really early this morning thinking about her leaving for the hospital… snuffle!
Sickie!… Now I am wondering how Stover is feeling tonight…snort!…Hopefully she got a lot of rest today….sniff! …We are going to start watching Luther 1.5 right after she whips up some delicious tacos!….Wooooo! ….Oh and Stover, there is a new show on Demand from the BBC called. “Britain Revealed”…grunt!… Unbelievable, but then again I never paid attention to Beauty pagents…sneeze!
2:56 pm on November 15th, 2010
Rio: I still haven't caught up with Luther. What is Britain Revealed about?
2:56 pm on November 15th, 2010
There was a bit of talk once about Kilmer running for governor of NM. That was scary…the stuff of nightmares, actually.
3:14 pm on November 15th, 2010
Why don't you guys like Val Kilmer?
3:40 pm on November 15th, 2010
Stover!… The first episode is about Baby Beauty Pageants…ugh!…Little kids 7, 9 and maybe 11 years old…snort!…Mimicking the American child pageants. It makes us sick the way these mothers exploit their beautiful little girls…sniff!…If you can believe it it has a hopeful ending…sniff!
Val!…He’s just weird as they come!…heh!…And not a very good actor either. We here say why waste time on No-Talent-Wanna-Bees! …snort!
3:42 pm on November 15th, 2010
Kilmer has lived in NM for quite awhile, has a ranch up north on the Pecos River. The ranch is now up for sale but there are no buyers. Kilmer has not been nice to the locals, mostly hispanic people…calling them drunks and criminals..denying people fishing access to the river. He is not a popular guy in the northern half of the state. He could never have gotten elected to any office in NM.
Mom did like Val Kilmer very much in the movie, "The Ghost and the Darkness". Facinating movie. I have seen it on DVD.
I want to hear Rio's reasons for not liking Kilmer and, also, what Britain Revealed is about.
3:52 pm on November 15th, 2010
I liked Kilmer in The Saint.
4:02 pm on November 15th, 2010
Val!… I think its because we have these vague memories of him on late night talk shows just being weird… sniff!… Plus, his acting ability never measured up to our standards of performance. Not me so much as my friend, she has seen him in this and that over the years and decided NO MORE. Her harsh opinion is he has no talent, no mind, nothing interesting going on. So it was goodbye Valie!…heh! … What’s he done lately?…snort!…Nothing comes to mind …sniff!
4:03 pm on November 15th, 2010
We won't be watching Britain Revealed, gag. I was hoping it was a history or scenic tour of England or something along those lines.
4:06 pm on November 15th, 2010
Rio, I think one of the reasons Kilmer has not done much lately is, well, he has gotten fluffy.
4:08 pm on November 15th, 2010
Molly!… Just visit all the tennis courts in town…grunt!…You will probably see him out there hitting some balls…snort!
4:09 pm on November 15th, 2010
Stover!… Luther 1.5 is very surprising so far, we are not finished quite yet!…wow!…Get Well and catch up girl!…snort!
4:12 pm on November 15th, 2010
Rio: When Mom worked at a newspaper in Tennessee, she had to interview a 6-year-old girl who had won a car — yes, a car! — in a national beauty pageant. She and her mom were all worried because her front teeth were loose, and they were afraid the teeth would fall out before her next pageant. Shocking! A 6-year-old with missing front teeth — how could that be beautiful??? Oh, and she wasn't allowed to leave the house without her makeup on! Another time Mom had brought some photos of a bunch of Little Miss County Fair contestants home to mark them and get them ready to publish for the county fair insert in the paper. My girl — who was 4 or 5 at the time — asked Mom if she could be in the pageant. Mom said no way, no how!!!
4:22 pm on November 15th, 2010
I have to be in the mood for Luther but I'll get to it soon. I go back to the doctor tomorrow as SH said. I think this thing lasts a couple of weeks.
4:32 pm on November 15th, 2010
I thought Kilmer was really good in Tombstone, and Deja Vu. The last thing i saw him in was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, also pretty good. But i read an interview once and he was definitely weird and from what SH says, he sounds like a tool.
4:41 pm on November 15th, 2010
Kirby!…These women don’t even realize how sick they look to “almost” every one else when they are exploiting their own children…snort!… The only redeeming quality of this show was that the one little girl who came from a family of No money, a Lot of talent, a Borrowed dress, and hardly any makeup on Did Not Win the Pageant, but she was offered 2 modeling jobs afterwards. Where as the mothers who spent tons of money and tortured their girls with all kinds of beautifying things that no child should have to endure like over-done makeup, fake tanning, eyebrows plucked, dance, song and walking lessons won nothing. Who knows what emotional damage it did to the kids when they felt like a failure…grunt!…The winner of the first Baby Pageant was an 11 or 12 year old who had a very natural look. No big hair or over-done makeup…wheeze!… She did not participate in the making of the show, thank goodness for that too!….gruff!
4:42 pm on November 15th, 2010
Hi, Liz. The guy at the wine store told me about McLaren Vale wine. We like the Shiraz. Do you know about them down under? They were selling their fruit to others and got tired of how they "mucked up the product" and now are their own wine makers. Cool.
Night all.
4:50 pm on November 15th, 2010
Oh!…A bit more about the little one who was offered modeling jobs, her mother was appalled at all the make-up and hair and costumes displayed. Mom coughed up the money somehow and went through it because her girl needed to over-come insecurity, have more confidence in herself (at 7) and feel better around people…hmmm.. The thing is, these two were the most believable of the film. Which sort of says something right there….wheeze! …We hope and pray this little one does not become yet another victim of outright greed….grump!
4:53 pm on November 15th, 2010
Liz!…Hi!…snort!…Val is not our choice of actors and nothing anyone says, will change that opinion…heh!…How are you my dear?…gruff!…I hope you are working hard and getting close to my sketch!…hmmm. I still need to find a good photo and send it to you – let me know when the time is near…heh!
4:54 pm on November 15th, 2010
Liz, Oh yeah, I forgot about Tombstone. We really liked Val Kilmer in that also.
4:54 pm on November 15th, 2010
Hi Bluecat! Yes, the McLaren Vale ones, especially the Shirazes i think, are known to be big – strong i mean, that's not the right word – maybe robust is the word. I"m not a wine drinker at all so wasted on me.
Well grumped, Rio, you'd think in this day and age there'd be better ways to make young girls feel confident and secure.
5:03 pm on November 15th, 2010
Liz!… Its like their mothers have Given UP on their children’s mind before the age of ten…sigh!…Beauty is everything and that’s all you got kid, make the most of it…grump!… Boy oh boy, if I had to rely on beauty I’d be out in the street selling bullshit! …growl! humphf!…This makes me so mad! …..growl!
5:09 pm on November 15th, 2010
Liz!…You should get to know BluKat!…snort!…She is the Kool Kat on the Blog…heh!…She is the one Kat I trust and look forward to hearing from. So of course she hardly every posts and there is nothing she says that I can poke fun at… wheeze!…She is my nemesis in a good way…sniffle! .. I really like Ms Blue Eyes…sigh! …She is one Kat I would let rub up against me and not bite her tail…heh!
5:15 pm on November 15th, 2010
Yeah, well, most people see beyond that sort of shallowness and stupidity. At least – i hope they do!
5:29 pm on November 15th, 2010
Hi Liz.
I can't keep my eyes open any longer so night all.
5:29 pm on November 15th, 2010
Liz!…Why is it such big business then if Most people see beyond its shallowness and stupidity?…grunt!…I think it is a stepping stone to even worse things for those little girls…sniff!…all instigated by their loving parents.
5:31 pm on November 15th, 2010
Liz!…Get your Avatar for gosh sakes…grump!…We here on the blog (or maybe me and Molly) went through alot to get this started…so do it please..Thank you! …grunt!

Late again, but really like Val Kilmer in Tombstone (he totally stole the movie fromm the others) and Real Genius was cute back in the day.
We are now back up to date on our blog, so hopefully, will be able to keep up again. Actually, we had a little foster brother that Mom brought home from the shelter to hopefully bring "out of his shell" a little bit. Turns out he had been adopted once before then returned because he was "odd". He had gotten into something toxic at that house. Mom noticed that his hind legs weren't working real well. In 2 days time, he totally lost use of all his legs….just like a ragdoll. He is at the vet, where they are trying to reverse the effects of whatever it was. Don't know if it will work. Mom went to visit him during her lunch hour today. He was so happy to see her…snuggled his head (about only thing he can move) all under her chin. The vet said it was too early to tell if he can be saved, but he has shown some improvement. Paws crossed!
Thinking about Barb and all plunderers and their families under the weather. Almost sounds as if we're passing the cold around…don't give it to Mom. She's whiney when she gets sick. Thankfully, that doesn't happen often.
Melanie, Mom is going to email the map in a minute. You hopefully will have it in the morning.
