“Simon and Schuster is having a sweepstakes?” Admin says.
“Yup,” says Spence.
“The complete published trade paperback library of the first three Chet and Bernie books? To wit, Dog On It, Thereby Hangs A Tail, and To Fetch A Thief?”
“Yup.”
“Signed by you?”
“Yup.”
“Paw printed by Chet?”
“That’ll be up to him.”
“And all you have to do is enter?”
“Yup. Winners chosen randomly. Contest ends August 11. Let’s post a link.”

My dad just preordered his copy of The Dog Who Knew Too Much, and he entered the
Simon and Schuster sweepstakes. He’s working hard to get the items sold on the auction packaged and in the mail. It’s been a hectic week and as usual we’re a bit behind.
9:02 am on July 14th, 2011
Have entered the sweepstakes!
Funny how they didn’t have a special box for The Plunderers!
Morning all . . .
9:08 am on July 14th, 2011
Morning All!
It is a wonderfully, beautiful day here in Westchester! YIPEE!
I, too, pre-ordered TDWKTM for my Nook, and have entered the S&S sweepstakes. Chet, do you think us guys can have a sweepstakes at your site too? Just sayin’…..

Wondering: T&G-How is your mom doing?
Wolfie: How are your boys?
CUL8R
9:28 am on July 14th, 2011
Chet: You like autographing books don’t you? I’m going to enter the sweepstakes.
Good morning all.
9:39 am on July 14th, 2011
Good morning. I’m almost late…again. Hope T7G’s mum feels much better.
9:40 am on July 14th, 2011
That would be T&G’s mum.
9:50 am on July 14th, 2011
Lucky!….I’m feeling Lucky!…snort! …I need to win something. I haven’t won anything this year yet and it’s almost half over….grunt! …Maybe this Simon Schuster guy will come thru for me….sniff!
10:41 am on July 14th, 2011
Mom said I could enter the contest!! WOO WOO
If I won, I would want Chet’s paw print on them, but I would understand if he didn’t want to do it. No one is dipping my paw in a jar of ink.
10:46 am on July 14th, 2011
Melanie? Any word on T&G’s mom? I hope she is feeling better.
I also hope Zoe is doing better today. You said yesterday morning that she was feeling under the weather.
11:02 am on July 14th, 2011
Sweep!….So why do you think Simon Schuster is giving away Spencer’s books?…snort!… What if the only ones who sign up are us?…heh!….That would mean our chances of winning would sky-rocket. I read the RULES and there will be 5 winners. I wonder if Spencer knows about that part….heh!…snort!snort!

Top of the Morn’n to Everyone
Bear’s good name restored.
A new contest – what fun!
I am tip top tho’ it poured.
11:17 am on July 14th, 2011
Barb is working today, but we are going to take time to enter the contest. 5 is her favorite number, so that is a good sign.
Hoping Zoe and The Royal’s Mum are both tip top this morning.
11:27 am on July 14th, 2011
Rio, I would guess it is a marketing promotion.
I would also say that S&S would be thrilled to have our email addresses and send us promotional emails. That is okay with me because the only promotional emails I like to receive are the ones that advertise books. S&S do give us the opportunity to uncheck that little box about receiving their emails, but I won’t do that because their emails would be about books.
The facebookie people will be entering that contest.
11:29 am on July 14th, 2011
Guess What! Staff got the Funky Chicken quilt in the mail today. It is absolutely beautiful! She says that Wookie tested it and now it is my turn and I get to lay where Wookie laid. Whoo Hooo!!!
(OH B. you better do a post on lay)
I lay, you lay they lay
I laid, you laid, they laid
Please correct as needed. I will save it I promise.
11:36 am on July 14th, 2011
Melanie: Have you heard anything from Tupper&Gilly’s and the Herb Kats mum? Hope the doc gave her some powerful medicine to make her pain go away. How is Zoe? Feeling much better today, too, we hope.
11:37 am on July 14th, 2011
Wookie and Rio are having hotwings with Spence at the top of my page. Along with Chianti. I don’t know Chianti but I wonder if she drinks Cahors?
11:55 am on July 14th, 2011
Have not heard from The Royals’ Mum today. When I do I will post.
Zoë is doing much better. The pool is almost full. Soon I will be chest deep in 50 degree water doing pool things that the Pool guy told us to do.
Oh Joy, Oh Rapture!
Hope my teeth survive!
11:59 am on July 14th, 2011
Abbie: I think you’re wound up this morning. (That’s an interesting phrase isn’t it….) I’ll do a blog post on lie and lay but it would give me a headache if I attempted it today. The only thing I was doing the other day with my suggested rephrasing of Melanie’s sentences was making them consistently present tense. The use of “would” as habitual action requires present tense and “lay” is the past tense of lie. The phrase “under the weather” also has me intrigued. I feel a headache coming on…..
12:03 pm on July 14th, 2011
Abbie: I placed bids on that quilt. How big is it? What are you going to do with it…besides test it?

Funny (sort of) story from YSAS.
Yesterday during his walkabout (he walks 2 to 3 miles in the morning) he was crossing the street with a right away when a car comes barreling through.
To save his life he hit the car with his fist (okay so he didn’t really need to hit it with his fist, he could have used his open hand) and thrust himself backward out of the way.
The guy SLAMS on his brakes and gets out of the car and as YSAS put it “He was the biggest freaking dude I’ve ever seen!” Of course, he didn’t use “freaking”.
The guy starts coming around and yelling, “You hit my freaking car!” Though he wasn’t using “freaking” either.
YSAS points to the right of way sign and says, “I had the freaking right of way!”
“You hit my freaking car!”
“I had the freaking right of way!”
Things went on like this with the huge dude getting closer, so YSAS started taking off his ear piece and said, “You want to settle this right now? Come on, let’s do it right here!”
A Pause For a Moment for Mom
Huge Angry Dude vs YSAS, 5′ 10″ 145 pounds with his winter coat on . . . Deep breaths . . .
The Huge Angry Dude stops looks at YSAS and says, “Well . . . freak you!” Gets back in the car and drives away.
YSAS has definitely become a New Yorker!

It is a funny story since everything came out okay, but it is still scary.

Wookie: I mailed “The Deserter” to your house yesterday.

Busy, busy, busy here in Chevy Chase. Mom’s quilting guild (of which did I mention she is now President of) is having a two day event, sort of quilters’ summer camp, here at Casa Wookie yesterday and today. Members are being offered classes in embroidery, applique and book making (with quilted covers). We had 39 people here yesterday; do you know how exhausting it is to herd 39 quilters all day. And then to boot, we had a major thunder storm during the afternoon session, and it was very necessary for me to stick very close to mom even while she was teaching one of the courses (you know how much that thunder and lightening bothers her — just like Rio’s friend). Today it’s a smaller group, only about 10 or so, so its a bit momre manageable. And no thunder storms on the horizon either, thank Dog.
I sure hope that T&G’s mom is doing better today. Melanie, please let us know when you hear something further.
Alice, just so you know, eau de Wookie is a very subtle fragrance, but I know you will be able to detect it, with your extraordinary feline sense of smell.
And Stover, thanks, my dad is really looking forward to getting The Deserter.
Wookie, over and out, from Quilters’ Summer Camp Command HQ
2:40 pm on July 14th, 2011
Bee, I have to tell you (whispering) that I use garlic in my pesto, too. And it does smell wonderful. I still have a few pesto balls left from last year. Just made some plain pasta and a plain grilled chicken breast, mixed in one of those pesto balls and viola (per Ingrid), great tasting meal.
2:43 pm on July 14th, 2011
Busy!… That Agent Wookie always has his paws into some special event or the other…heh!…He is still The Most Interesting Guy In the World….snort! …Now I’m thirsty for a Dos Equis….snort!
3:12 pm on July 14th, 2011
39 quilters is a lot of people.
Thank you Masquers.
B&M: Now I’m really hungry! Do you grill indoors or outside?
3:23 pm on July 14th, 2011
Abbie: And “laid” is the past tense of “lay.” Heh!

Mom and I are at Sam’s house now. She’s at the groomer and we will pick her up soon. Since she just had her buzz cut, today is just a bath and Wonderfluff.
3:49 pm on July 14th, 2011
Mollypop: How often does Sam go to the groomers? I’d like to see a picture of the two of you together.
3:51 pm on July 14th, 2011
Wookie:
Looks like Abbie has taken possession of the famous Funky Chicken quilt. heh, heh.
Your mom’s quilting guild sounds so interesting. Although we here have never been involved in such, Nana would especially love learning how to do projects such as the quilted book covers. Sadly, her one attempt at being creative in this way turned out to be a disaster. A knitted sweater intended to be a Christmas gift for the dad ended up with dropped stitches and one sleeve longer than the other (snicker) Gram came to the rescue many months later & made 2 small sweaters for the boys out of it.
I have rarely had the same experience as you and Rio with thunder storms. Mom says there were many of them where she grew up in the mid west. Here on the Island it is such a rare occurrence she now says she misses both the thunder, lightening and pouring rain that followed.
3:52 pm on July 14th, 2011
39 of any people are a lot of people.
I’m freezing! Did what the Pool Guy said to do. The Pump is great. We have to harden the water and back wash the filter.
Now that I’ve had a HOT shower, I’m going to put a sweater on!
3:53 pm on July 14th, 2011
Rio: Thank you for adding the P. McManus excerpts yesterday. I’ve been thinking of doing a collection of short stories as that is how I tend to think and write and the excerpts were great inspiration. I’ve been able to spend some one on one time with Rio Jr. now that AJ is away for a couple of days. He’s a love and somewhat fond of ear scratches.
Melanie: That YSAS, a New Yorker through and through better be careful.
I signed up for the sweeps with S&S and now I need to pre-order Chet’s book so Spence finds himself at the top of a best selling list.
Paw over nose hoping that T&G and the Herb’s mum is on the mend.
4:23 pm on July 14th, 2011
Junior!… I think Junior gets his love of ear scratches from me….snorkel!… That is how she tries to trick me into sitting still for a photo …sniff!….But it takes two of ‘em to get meto sit for a photo….heh!… I think there is a trip to the farm planned soon to see Pepper and the gang….snort!… She says there are a few guys there that will help her out with some photos….grunt!… Of what I am not sure….sniff!
4:24 pm on July 14th, 2011
Melanie, Why did you have to drain all the water from the pool? That must be thousands of gal of water. Do you have a well?
Glad that big dude didn’t decide to duke it out with your son. Could have gotten messy.
Bee, We have an outside grill that uses LP, so it is easier but not as good as charcoal.
5:13 pm on July 14th, 2011
B&M: What is LP?
Melanie: How do you make water hard? (I know that soft water has salt.)
Rio: I would rather see pictures of you standing so that we can see your tail.
5:26 pm on July 14th, 2011
Melanie: The Close Encounter with the Big Dude was scary for some here to even contemplate. We think the reason the big guy backed off was because YSAS looked so fierce after almost being run down by the car.
Question: turning soft water into hard water – how is it done? Do you add minerals? E-Gads, what a job for you, draining the pool and all. But I’m sure the Newf’s will appreciate all the hard work on their behalf. And, getting into that cold water is one way to cool off that I’m sure you do not recommend.
Barb&Magpie: We put Skin in our Netflix queue. There is a long wait.
Also, signed up with S&S to win the pawtographed set of Chet & Bernie Mysteries. (whispering) I just hope S&S doesn’t send daily emails. That would drive someone here crazy.

Bee, LP is Liquid Petroleum, that is what is in those little portable tanks that you can get filled at the stores. It is also what we heat our house with out in the country. LP is what you use when you don’t have access to natural gas. Little tank for grill gets filled at the store, and we go thru 1 or 2 per season. Big tank in yard is filled by a delivery truck. Tank holds 500 gal.
6:03 pm on July 14th, 2011

Alice and B&M: Thank you. I don’t grill but my brother does and I’ve seen a tank under his grill.
Rio: I don’t care if you can see you tail or not. I want to see your tail…curled.

Staff: The series of books you mentioned yesterday, by author Mary Laswell, were not available at our local library. We will check with Amazon later this afternoon.
A Fine & Pleasant Misery is on order for mid-August.
Checked the S&S website. They offer a personal preference sign-up page which gives you the choice of which types of books you would like to hear about, which authors and how often.

Did anyone receive a confirmation that you entered the sweepstakes from S&S?
6:55 pm on July 14th, 2011
B: I received an email thanking me for signing up for S&S emails.
7:06 pm on July 14th, 2011
Hello All,
Mom just got home and she is not giving us long on the computer. Says she wants us to sit out on the porch with her after we get the horses out. This farm life is very busy.
Melanie! We are very cold just thinking about you going in that freezing cold water. If you had our genetic memory, you would never go into cold water!
We have a propane tank outside our house also. Its used for indoor cooking, hot water (on demand) heater, and fireplace. But we also have a hose hooking it up to our gas grill, so that we no longer have to replace lp tanks.
7:08 pm on July 14th, 2011
Mom entered the S&S sweepstakes. She did not appreciate them asking her birth date.
When she hit “Enter”, a confirmation screen popped up.
7:14 pm on July 14th, 2011
Hello Plunderers all. Tup and Gilly’s Mama here (tho not for long)
Thank you all so much for your concern and good thoughts. Short version – I have scoliosis and there is a muscle group right above the curvature that decided that enough was enough and has gone into spasms. The muscle group is deep tissue, meaning that massage or muscle rubs can’t get to it. Spent the day in the hospital getting pain injections evry 15 minutes, and valium injections every half hour. Needless to say – very, very drugged. Doc let me come home with stipulation that I stay in bed for 2 days and continue taking a trio of valium, percoset and muscle relaxer. Let me assure you – I won’t be going out dancing tonight. I feel like wilted celery…and have about as many brain cells too.
But I did want to say thanks – going back to sleep nowwwwwww……
7:16 pm on July 14th, 2011
So glad to hear from T&G’s mum. But we hate knowing she is in so much pain. We love you T&G and Mum.
7:17 pm on July 14th, 2011
Thank you Rebecca. I received a confirmation as Howlers did but I didn’t receive an email.
7:21 pm on July 14th, 2011
Royal’s mum: Thank you for letting us know. I hope the spasms stop soon.
7:27 pm on July 14th, 2011
Jeez, muscle spasms . . . I sat through Zoë’s and it was not pretty!
Tupper and Gilly, you guys be good little pups. No trying to herd bears!
Liquid Propane. That sounds like an oxymoron . . . Like Dark Light, or The Living Dead, or where I spend most of my time Virtual Reality.
That reminds me of an old commercial for some kind of sunglasses. People kept putting them on and saying “It’s like seeing in 3D!”
I kept yelling back, “It is 3-D, you idiots! It’s the real world you’re looking at!”
Hmmm. I spend a lot of time arguing with commercials . .
7:33 pm on July 14th, 2011
Buddy: Yeah! what’s up with that! Do we have to show birth certificates to claim our prize? Luckily, we all happen to have our trusty Plunderer ID’s handy so there won’t be a problem.
B: We also received confirmation from S&S after entering the secret information.
7:42 pm on July 14th, 2011
Royal Mum! Very relieved to hear from you, but so sorry to hear you are in such pain. We know Tupper & Gilly and Basil & Sage will do their part to make things as easy as possible for you.
7:50 pm on July 14th, 2011
I’d like to hear Melanie arguing with commercials.
I wonder if a heating pad would help spasms.
7:57 pm on July 14th, 2011
I was thinking the other day that it seems as if Basil and Sage have been fairly quiet on Chet’s. I wonder if Tupper and Gilly finally succeeded in boxing up the herbs and shipping them to parts unknown.
It is good to hear from the Royals’ mum. I had emergency back surgery a few years ago and when you have back pain it doesn’t there’s any cure. I hope the Royals’ mum is soon Plunderering again and enjoying time with her clay.
8:04 pm on July 14th, 2011
Very glad to hear from the Royal’s mum. We love you and are wishing you a quick and complete recovery.
8:20 pm on July 14th, 2011
T & G’s Mum, Havwe you ever tried non traditional treatment like chiropractic? Have heard it can help. Have gone to one off and on for years, but not for anything that serious.
BSD, Let us know what you think after you watch that movie, although it may be awhile. Did you just get a change to your Nexflix bill?
8:25 pm on July 14th, 2011
Mom has scoliosis also, but not as bad as T and G’s mom. The pain can be unbearable.
My boys are doing great! They are clean and sober, and are active participants in their recovery. Somehow we managed to acquire a girlfriend. I like her because she gives nice pats. Mom and Dad are letting her stay because both of her parents were drunk and high when they dropped her off at home, and decided that the gf would be safer at our house. Turns out that the parents were supplying my boy and his girl with pot and cigarettes and alcohol a few months ago.
My boys need to work part time, and getting them to apply for jobs is like herding Kats. Mom is also nagging them, I mean, encouraging them to get their drivers licenses and their high school diplomas.
8:26 pm on July 14th, 2011
B&M: I received an email from Netflix telling me about the change beginning September 1. I have both streaming and dvds and would change to all streaming (that price didn’t go up) but they have a limited number of streaming titles.
8:32 pm on July 14th, 2011
Wolfie: Good On ‘Em! And you and your mom and dad!
B.Stover: Got that message too.
TTFN (too much Pool!)

Masquers, not all of us have Plunderers ID, so we may need to show our Birth Certificate. Altho ours is not official, and so we may be accused of being born in Kenya.
We did not receive an email from Netflix yet, but we figure we will drop the DVDs and just do streaming. We are hoping they expand their list to newer movies.
8:44 pm on July 14th, 2011
Barb&Maggie & B: We have not checked into the Netflix price change, but did receive notice of it. Will look to see if we can get less DVDs + instant play, which would be less of a charge than the unlimited plan + streaming we have now. Seems like everything is going up but our incomes.
8:45 pm on July 14th, 2011
Dawson and Tyb: Check you SDD
I received a call from AJ who is made his way to southeast Alaska to collect little Charlotte and check on the rest of the team. Did he make the journey alone? Nope. Johnny, served as co-pilot on the journey and will spend the remainder of the summer pulling tourists. My parting words to Johnny other than words of love included: No fighting and no grown-up loving.
8:50 pm on July 14th, 2011
Bear!…I’m sure you will enjoy P. McManus as much as we did…snort!… Someone here will be ordering other books by him I’m sure….heh!… That book has been in her possession for years and years but she didn’t find it until cleaning out for the big garage sale, along with some other jewels she will be reading. BTW, we still have the garage. …hmmphf!… She told me the reason she never read McManus in the first place involved a long story about a boss she hated. He actually had a story published in Field & Stream, and he told her about McManus, I think he was the one who gave her the book….snort!… Having held the grudge forever she finally broke down and read the book and it was wonderful…heh!…What a waaah waaaah waaah she can be…grunt!
Stover!… I know you like my tail, but I don’t like being photographed and I am an expert at avoiding it….snort!…So good luck seeing the tail anytime soon…heh!heh!

Well, hate to admit it, but Barb is so behind times, that all she does is order a movie thru Netflix, watch it, then mail it back and wait for another. You guys will laugh,, but we don’t even know for sure what streaming means. Does it come thru your computer, or your tv? We were paying 9.00 per month, and it would go to $15.99 for streaming and mailed dvds. Now we will be paying $7.99 for mailed movies only. We are happy with that, because we only watch 1-2 movies per week anyway.

That quilt and Alice look great together. The colors are beautiful.
9:49 pm on July 14th, 2011
Yes, Alice and the quilt go well together.
Barb: Streaming is through the internet but I can attach a cable to my tv and computer and watch it through the tv. I can also attach another cable and the sound comes from the tv.

Well Folks, I was trying to send you a link for Emmy-Nominated Commercials from the Huffington Post, but it didn’t work. Rats! But if you go to their website & search for same there are 6 to be seen.
With that effort I’ve exhausted my limited techno-skills for the day. Back in the am – Bear
p.s. Wolfie! Good news about your boys!

BluKat!….All Alice is ever thinking is, “ How can I take over the world?”…snort!
Shucks!…She says we have to go for a walk…grunt!…Even though the game is really fun right now, she says we have to go…sniff!…I hate getting into that harness. It’s a real bitch!…grump! …And it pinches. She says if I would quit eating Zingers maybe it wouldn’t pinch so bad…huffle!

We watch streaming Netflix thru our Blue Ray player but that only lets us view movies we already put in our instant queue. We can view many more thru our WII.
Wolfie, we are happy your boys are doing well.

Alice, you look elegant on that quilt. and Haughty which is always a good trait in a kat.
Good nite…its way past our bedtime once again. If I don’t hurry up, I won’t get a spot on anybody’s bed.

That’s not fair!!! Rio has to go for a walk during this baseball game.

Keep up the good work, Wolfie’s boys!
Thanks for the words of support, Siber, and Bee, that streaming stuff sounds like way too much work. We like to just put the disc in and play. Think we will stick with that till we get taken, kicking snd screaming, to the next level of technology.
Good night, all.

Barb and I are going to share some ice cream. Night all and sweet dreams.

11:00 pm on July 14th, 2011
Uphill!…That walk was so uphill that every time I tried to piss on something it would go downhill past the target…grunt!…I can’t be expected to figure out the algebra needed to hit the target, not on a torture walk like that…grumble!…She says, “Get used to it, because this is going to be our ‘norm’ every night“ …yeep!yikes!cough!

It’s only the 7th inning, but I am declaring the Rockies the winner of this game and going to sleep. The Brewers might as well go back to their hotel rooms now.
Feel better soon T&G’s mom.

Upstairs!…To bed!….wheeze!… Now she has decided she needs and wants to go to bed even before the game is over…grump!…Well, this is good news because it means I will get to be on the big bed and listen to the ending of the game over the radio…heh!…Not so bad, not so bad…snorkel!…She’s got this really nice ceiling fan, it is awesome!…wooooo!

Just caught up on the last 2 days of the blog. Wow, miss 1 day and all hell breaks loose. T&G’s mum, glad you are feeling better and hope that the medication and rest helps. We agree with Rio…perhaps a little too much standing and reaching with the clay.
Rio, the McManus readings were wonderful. Mom was reading them to Dad and they both really enjoyed it. Sounds like a Kindle purchase.
Mom made her weekly jaunt to the cat food store and there, in the grooming area, was Mollypop’s twin!! She had Mollypop’s haircut and color and was the prettiest thing!! Mom knew it wasn’t the real Mollypop because Mollypop’s snowbird mom would NEVER make it in southeast Texas in July!!
Wolfie, we’re so glad your boys are doing well. Sometimes it IS worth the wait.
See you later guys!

Speaking of Sam, I wonder if she enjoyed her day of beauty.
I’m not sure what happened. I worked from home today and when I completed my work. I closed my eyes just for a moment and woke up three hours later. Now, I’ll never sleep tonight.

We are very impressed that T & G’s mom can type a coherent sentence. If she has any of that wonderful pill cocktail left over, mom will be happy to take it off her hands, lol. She has spent today trying to get some more muscle relaxers. She should not be penalized that she parsed out her pills so long that the script expired. Maybe tomorrow. yawwwwnnnn. Oh excuse me, I really did mean to cover my yawn. Nite-nite, from the land of 15 straight days of over 100 temps, and it doesn’t get below 80 at night. We had a heat advisory on Tuesday that was supposed to end tonight, but now it extends through at least Saturday. I personally don’t care, but the 2-leggeds surely are cranky.
