First! Greetings from the middle of the mitten. Feeling a bit carpola today. Mom is off to urgent care, something about a strep test. I think I’ll nap while she’s gone.
9:04 am on January 13th, 2013
Have a good trip Spence.
Jasper: I hope your mom starts feeling better.
Good morning all.
9:23 am on January 13th, 2013
I bet Jasper’s mom has this bug that is going around. Barb’s started with an unbelievably sore throat. Still coughing three weeks later.
Wouldn’t it be great to be in Florida today?
9:41 am on January 13th, 2013
The flu is now epedemic in 47 states, and evidently the flu shot is only 60-80% effective.
9:47 am on January 13th, 2013
TPTB have declared a Flu emergency in NY. I am hoping that YSAS and SO get their flu shots NOW.
I would like to be in Florida. I would like to be somewhere that does not have 8 inches of slush.
Actually, I wouldn’t mind being here if I had a hot tub that the Newfs could not get in with me. Not that I have a hot tub now . .
Where OFA will be . .

10:02 am on January 13th, 2013
What is this I see?
The sun getting high enough to break out of the fog?
Please?
Of course, this means more slush.
On the other paw, it’s nice to not have on every light in the house during the day.
10:14 am on January 13th, 2013
I hope Jasper’s mom starts feeling better soon!
10:17 am on January 13th, 2013
Barb, mom would love to send you a card at the rehab place. Could you please post the info? Thanks.
10:31 am on January 13th, 2013
Good morning all. Mom is sick today. Fortunately for us, Pop remembered it is Egg Day.
We kept telling Mom not to go out to dinner last night, but she said she promised her friends, who made reservations, and it was a birthday celebration. So? If you’re sick you’re sick.
10:33 am on January 13th, 2013
Wolfie, Barb does not have that info yet. The surgery will be at Centegra Hospital in McHenry, IL. Still have to find out where the rehab place is.
11:03 am on January 13th, 2013
The Flu! Youse guys are falling like flies.
Please take care of yourselves.
Barb&Magpie: The knee surgery is scheduled for the 29th?
Melanie: Oh, those Beautiful Florida temps! 80 in the daytime and only 10 degrees cooler at night. Ah…..
B: Why don’t you like Florida again?
11:14 am on January 13th, 2013
Yes it’s the 29th. Sob sob
11:25 am on January 13th, 2013
Could Spence stop by and pick mom up on his way to Florida?
Once again, it is going to be warmer at Snowhook than here…two degrees this morning at the dog park. Only the three Huskies and two Husky moms were there. Us dogs had a great time…the moms, not so much.
11:30 am on January 13th, 2013
Howlers’ mom and Jasper’s mom, We hope you both feel better soon.
Barb, You will be glad you had the surgery once it is over with. Everyone that has that surgery is glad they did it.
11:38 am on January 13th, 2013
I know you are right Siber, But I am so dreading it. Plus I have never been away from Maggie for 10 days. Eric the Evil said he would be glad to come over and take care of her, and then take her to the kennel it it didn’t work out. Can you see him getting a leash on her and getting her in his truck? My worst nightmare! hahahahahaha
11:45 am on January 13th, 2013
29 degrees here…a day to enjoy the warmth of the fireplace…(since we can’t be in Florida…sob)
Barb: (whispering) couldn’t Maggie stay with a member of the family that is home all day? What about Gus’ folks? Or is the “comfort of the familiar” a better way to go?
So, so sorry Beau (and Riö) It was soooo close. Ah, well you can join us cheering on Seattle today. They are going all the way…GO HAWKS!!!
11:53 am on January 13th, 2013
Barb, I am sure you are dreading both the surgery and the ten days away from Maggie. The pet setting lady you found sounds perfect, and I imagine you can talk to her on the phone while you are in the hospital and rehab to learn how Maggie is doing.
Maggie told me to tell you she does not like Eric the Evil.
Does the pet setting lady have references? Mom is paranoid about these things, as I am sure you are.
11:54 am on January 13th, 2013
Mama says she would like to have a glass of whine:
“I wanna go to Flooooridaaaaa”
12:06 pm on January 13th, 2013
sob!sob!sob!
12:10 pm on January 13th, 2013
Bear: I don’t like Florida because I don’t like hot weather. (Anything over 70 is hot.) I don’t like high humidity either and the only place where Florida is green is on the golf courses. (I don’t like playing golf.)
12:13 pm on January 13th, 2013
We read last night’s posts finally. Rose kicked in the last of the money for High Jumpin’ Quigley! Hurray!

Many thanks to all those who contributed to Quigley: Staff, Dawson, B.Stover, , Bear, Rio, Wookie’s Mom & Dad, and Rose. Oh yeah, and Sasha’s part of the treats budget.
12:19 pm on January 13th, 2013
Have been meaning to ask…who is the team member cheering on Quig’s high jump?
Howlers: Do you know?
12:27 pm on January 13th, 2013
Rebecca, Is that Orion just to the left of the Quigster? I am thinking it looks like him.
Mr.Staff fell on his bad knee yesterday and didn’t tell Staff how bad it was until he couldn’t walk last night. MEN! He is usually intelligent. Anyway, huh, Staff got him cold packs and ibuprofen and he is no better this morning. He is actually talking about GOING TO THE URGENT CARE! Staff says he is going without her as she is getting no where near an urgent care (this flu season) unless the transplanted kidney goes wacky (and then she is to go to the ER). She is willing to drive him there and see him into a wheelchair and wait, outside.
So he had bacon and eggs in bed this morning and then Dad had bacon and eggs sitting at the kitchen table listening to MPR. Now she has to go get Mr.Staff a paper so he can have the TV listing. sigh. She forgot it this morning when she went out to get him a cane.
12:28 pm on January 13th, 2013
At least we don’t have slush.
12:30 pm on January 13th, 2013
I would love to go to the Murder on the Beach do in Florida.
The warm weather is headed my way. This morning the temperature is -10F but tomorrow the forecast is for +40F! The day after is forecast to be +42! Possibilities of exceeding Melanie’s 8 inches of slush.
I hope all those feeling bad get feeling better in a hurry.
12:45 pm on January 13th, 2013
Stover n’ Rebecca!…Please check your SDD’s…sob!sob!sob!
12:45 pm on January 13th, 2013
An unbelievable +33 degrees here and it is supposed to be the same tomorrow. And the night temperature is supposed to be +22. One of my dogs slept outside last night as she was too warm in the house. Very, very strange. The bad part is the possibility of freezing rain so the plan is to stay home today. Perhaps with the warm temps I can work in the garage today. BBL (for Bee: be back later)

***************** Announcement !! ***************
Rules!…An addendum to the Feed The Giant donation rules….snort!….If any of you would rather go out and buy non-perishable food to send to Snowhook for The Giant and the A-Team, the amount you spend can be submitted just as you would a regular pledge to the fund….snort!….So for example, you go out and spend 75.00 on beef jerky, candy bars, dried fruit, cookies or nuts etc., this 75.00 can be submitted in as many emails as you want to qualify for the Magic Number. …wheeze!….Just be very sure to state this in the email(s) you send to my SDD that the amount was spent on groceries….snorkel!
12:53 pm on January 13th, 2013
It is 47 here, and absolutely no sun. Fog fog fog. We got soaking wet outside, and Mom thought it was raining. We told her that is just the fog. The ground is squishy, which we huskies hate. And there is NO SNOW. What happened to winter? This is so lame.
12:59 pm on January 13th, 2013
Maggie, tell Barb that Mom’s very good friend had knee surgery on both knees (one knee at a time). She was so afraid to have that first surgery that she put it off longer than she should have, but then when she had it, she was very very happy that she did. She did great in p.t., and is now walking lots. We don’t blame Barb for dreading it, but we all look forward to happy results afterwards.
1:00 pm on January 13th, 2013
I would like a little direction from Rebecca about what candy bars, nuts, dried fruit or cookies would be preferred by the Giant.
Also what kind of beef jerky.
Thanks.
1:02 pm on January 13th, 2013
By the way, Just so no one forgets. We still need 430.00 for the Shake the Booty fund…

BOO-T!
1:05 pm on January 13th, 2013
Our average overnight low for this time of year is 26 degrees…not 2 above. I’m happy, but there is no snow. The weathermen say this cold air is from Canada. Thanks Dawson.
C.Harris, It is going to be warmer at your house today and tonight than at mine. This is, indeed, strange.
1:08 pm on January 13th, 2013
I want to add to something Rio has already said….sob, sob, sob
1:12 pm on January 13th, 2013
Greetings from two feet off the ground! The beautiful girl cheering me on in the picture is the one and only Rory. She was a good lead dog, a good friend and I miss her.
Dawson: You asked how I got my name. Well, I’d like to say it was a clever decision to name me after a prospector, but it’s not. It is all because of my sister. My mama, the CNO of the kennel, had a difficult time naming us. There was only three of us in the litter and Elim was placed with a home and to my mama’s joy, boomeranged back to us, but that’s a story for another time. My mama says we dogs kind of tell her our names and until that time she uses two default names: Poopsie McPoopsalsot or Poopsie McPoopsiepants. She tried all sorts of names for my sister and I, but we must have been silent on the issue. Nothing seemed right. She was getting frustrated. We were a few months old and nameless. On day I was busy playing with my mama without my sister. This was unusual because we did everything together. My mama saw my sister from the corner of her eye. When she turned her head to look she saw my sister chewing on a twig. “Twig!” she called and my sister came running over. My mama looked at me and said, “Quig!” I wagged my tail. Sister has been Twig ever since and I’m Quigley for long.
1:16 pm on January 13th, 2013
The weather world is upside-down. If it rains tomorrow we will have skating rinks all over town.
1:24 pm on January 13th, 2013
Lazy Sunday afternoon in front of the pellet stove.

1:28 pm on January 13th, 2013
Barb here again. I am totally paranoid about Maggie’s safety, so a lot of thought went into her care while I am gone. Both Josh and Kelly offered to take her, and I considered it for about a New York second. Both homes contain crazy kids that run in and out with no thought to a dog escaping, neither has a fenced yard and one contains a very kid friendly, dog aggressive Pit bull. So NO. I considered a kennel but then opted for the dog sitter. She is registered with a internet care giver group, and they have to have references. I also talked to someone at the extension center for 4-H who knew her. She is a life long resident of this county and I was impressed with her when she came to visit. She said she could call me daily if I wished for updates. I feel bad about her spending 10 days alone, but it seemed like the best option. If Kelly had a fenced yard, I probably would have taken her there, but they just have underground.
1:32 pm on January 13th, 2013
Buddy! You blend.
1:33 pm on January 13th, 2013
B&M: Coach, the father not the dog had both of his knees replaced a few years ago. He said the key to getting the best recovery was riding the stationary bike. He know walks several miles a day. He was always active before his surgery, but is much better off now. He was not looking forward to either of his surgery, but is glad he did it. You will be fine. Plus, the Smoochers also have their calendar blocked out for you.
1:35 pm on January 13th, 2013
B&M: This is a little “out there”, but could Gus spend some time with her?
1:35 pm on January 13th, 2013
Siber & Riö: What’s with the sobbing? You’re scaring me.
1:37 pm on January 13th, 2013
Maggie, we don’t do kennels either. When the rents go away, which is next to never, they have someone stay here with us. That person has to know about horses too, so it is really hard to find someone Mom trusts. The girl who stayed with us in the past is great. We love her so much that we wouldn’t mind if they went away more often. Now they have the upcoming Seattle wedding, and since it is on a holiday weekend, Mom figured she better ask Sarah plenty early. But woah!!!! Sarah is pregnant and due just befor that weekend. Sarah is going to get her the name of a new young woman moving back here from college, but the problem is that she comes back here later than the rsvp is due (today!) So there is no telling how this will pan out.
1:40 pm on January 13th, 2013
Howlers: You’re ‘rents should visit Alaska while they are traveling for the wedding. We’re practicially neighbors. 🙂
1:50 pm on January 13th, 2013
Riö: Good option to send food items to the Giant…this is a can-do.
1:50 pm on January 13th, 2013
Dog Sitters . . Zoë will only use Jesse.
I believe they are sobbing because Denver lost.
Hi Wölfie!
I am considering writing a book called, “Zen and the Art of Digging Out Poop from Eight Inches of Slush.” Or, Zen and ADOPEIS.
This morning I had more helpers than normal. Two Ravens were watching me.
They commented (a great deal) on my technique. If you go to this link . . http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Common_Raven/sounds
and play the last recording, it is the second call on that loop that sounds like what they were saying.
We had quite a conversation.
1:55 pm on January 13th, 2013
Oleys, you are right. Barb said it is much harder finding someone who can take care of animals than to find a babysitter. When she lived in the country and had the chickens and goats she hired a young single girl who was a vet tech. She was really good and trustworthy. She stayed overnight and charged $30.00 per day.
We will mention Gus coming to play. That sounds like a good idea.
1:56 pm on January 13th, 2013
Staff: The All Important Booty Fund has NOT been forgotten…only waiting for treat jar replenishment…..
2:04 pm on January 13th, 2013
Melanie got it right. We are sobbing because the Broncos lost….after winning all those games this season, they LOST!
2:11 pm on January 13th, 2013
Melanie: That is a great site with the many Raven calls.
Snowhook Bella: I can see that it is not always easy being the CNO. Funny story about how Twig and Quig finally got their names. Meanwhile, I’ve done minutes of research on Joe and Fanny Quigley. Heh.
OleyHowlers: Kat and T.C. are living the life.
2:12 pm on January 13th, 2013
Rio and Siber, Melanie was outside chatting with the Ravens after they beat your Broncos!
2:16 pm on January 13th, 2013
Dawson, that was Buddy the Siber wannabe who was snuggling up with Kat. Me? I am living the life, and I prefer this life to be Sibe- and Buddy-free.
Staff, Mommy is saving up for some BOO-TI donations….I told her to just take all of Buddy’s treat money.
2:29 pm on January 13th, 2013
Hi, guys. Mom is letting us play with the new ipaw. Please forgive any and all typos and auto corrects. Yesterday Mom spent all day putting up the rest of Christmas. Around here that’s a job. Today, she won’t even get out of her pajamas and is watching free HBO. Someone mentioned yesterday that they had free Showtime so she checked. We have free everything! Very cool.
Rio, sorry about the Broncos. Y’all had quite a season and Dad really expected y’all to go to the Superbowl. We expected GreenBay to win too. Maybe since we were wrong about those two games, we shouldn’t be so pessimistic about the Texans. The unexpected can happen. Tom Brady could get lost and not show up!
2:32 pm on January 13th, 2013
OHs, new avatar? Is that in memory of your Sasha?
2:37 pm on January 13th, 2013
Bella: Great story about the naming of Quig and Twig…and thanks for letting us know it was Rory in the background.
The Broncos…it so looked like victory was in their paws…sob.
2:39 pm on January 13th, 2013
G&BB are the first to notice our new avatar, which is actually Dima, winner of the competition for the Editor-In-Chief position recently left vacant. Kat was the tie breaker vote and felt that Dima’s seniority deserved the promotion, especially because he shares his treats with her, and does not demand her toys. Meashka says she can distract Dima and change words whenever she wants anyway.
2:41 pm on January 13th, 2013
I was a little distressed to hear YSAS was in the ER a couple of days ago, so I thought I would meet up with the Smoochers and see if I could help. I arrived with my lanyard around my neck that held my whistle. I don’t have the whistle any longer, but now Lefty’s bark sounds like a whistle.
I introduced myself to a nurse as a coach and the next thing I knew, I was ushered into the pupternity ward. There was a lot of huffing, puffing, screaming and swearing—and that was just me. You should have heard the lady in the stirrups. From what I gathered her go-to guy, Coach Lamaz was a no show and she needed help. I’ve seem my Lady be a midwife several times in the kennel. It involves letting the mama to be rest her head in your lap, stroking her ears and telling her she’s doing a wonderful job. Easy. Several hours and jello cups later, a pup was born. I expected four to six more pups, but they never showed. Luna had a litter of one with Belle Starr, so I guess strange things like this have been known to happen.
Furless, seven pounds, fourteen ounces if anyone cares.
3:10 pm on January 13th, 2013
who? Where? What?

Sob!sob!Sob!
Pissed!…I’m slowly moving from mourning our teams loss to being really pissed off….sob!sob!sob!….Beau and I were really looking forward to watching the Broncos and the Patriots play next weekend. …wheeze!….The New England Pats are Spencer and Admin’s team. We have a rivalry all things football and baseball…grump!…So, for what it is worth we will be rooting for New England today…sniff!….They are also “supposed” to win their game. It will be interesting to watch….sob!sob!sob!

Football. Bah-humbug!

Coach Whitey-Lance, you are an amazing being!
And Quig, I’m glad you and Twig found your names. Sometimes it takes us two-leggeds awhile.
Dinner has been served and inhaled. Maybe I can get another nap in . .

4:23 pm on January 13th, 2013
Stover, you are cracking me up even though I am still sobbing.
4:23 pm on January 13th, 2013
Oley – loved the cat and dog shot. Here is my favorite from the 1970s.
4:37 pm on January 13th, 2013
B&M: No one that we know, two or four legged had a litter recently. My huffing, puffing, screaming and swearing skills happened to be in the right place at the right time when I went to check on YSAS in the hospital. I’ve seen things I should not have seen, let me tell youse.
Speaking of pups though, I may not be in the race this year but my three boys have been training with the A team. There is a chance one, two or all might make it to the staring line. Last year Abe and Garrett were on the team. Abe made it to the finish line! Abe and Marco were named after the two trappers that helped take care of AJ while I was on my little walkabout.
4:47 pm on January 13th, 2013
Losers!…sob!sob!sob!…Well, every team we have rooted for up to now has lost right at the end…grunt!….We will now concentrate all of our rooting abilities on the New England Patriots…heh!

Dawson, The Royal Mum and Snowbella, please check SDD.
4:59 pm on January 13th, 2013
I am not watching these football games so I can’t be blamed for our teams losing.
I am just following the games on the blog.
5:05 pm on January 13th, 2013
Riö, I will watch the game just to nix your jinx! Because two Jinxes make a win. Correct?
Gus and BooBear, congrats on the new iPaw. I have found when using the iM thingy with GLAD is when I get the weirdest and strange autocorrects.
5:09 pm on January 13th, 2013
That said . .
Zoë says to tell all of you that you mean the world to her with everything that you have done, prayed, and circled.
She also loves to laugh with you (today, I read her Coach WL’s adventure) and cry with you.
Thank you from Zoë (and me)
ps. I will now remember to check the phone, that I must always carry with me, to make sure that I haven’t turned it on while picking up dog dishes, and then Zoë can’t reach me, freaks out, calls the neighbor, who throws slush balls at the window, catching my attention, then makes strange hand gestures so I have to open the window, after stepping over eight dogs, to find out that Zoë wants me to call.
5:09 pm on January 13th, 2013
Jinx!…Melanie, I really do want the Patriots to win…snort!…I can’t help it if I am a jinx….sob!sob!sob!

Masquers, I am sorry Seattle lost. I was cheering for them.
I am cheering for Houston….Macy and Gus&BooBear should be helping me.
5:48 pm on January 13th, 2013
Nix!…Melanie’s power of Nix seems to be greater than my power of Jinx…heh!…Pats are ahead now!…snort!
5:51 pm on January 13th, 2013
Well, virtually overnight our household has grown from 2 humans, two dogs, and 4 Kats to 4.5 humans, 2 dogs and 8 Kats. Yup, my boy Cody and his girl have moved in after being evicted. Mom says that they have to do the right thing because of the baby. One of the new Kats, Daisy, is in heat. Poor puss.
The 8th cat, Moochie, is the mascot from work. He had been beaten up by a stray dog and disappeared for two weeks over Christmas. He finally reappeared today and mom decided that it is np longer safe to be an outdoor cat so he is coming home also.
Sheesh. It’s a good thing that me and Gus love everybody.

Wolfie: You must have either a very big house, or a Very Big Heart.
6:12 pm on January 13th, 2013
Wolfie, We hope and pray that things go smoothly. Is your dad on board for this? Is the mama-to-be keeping her body clean and sober while she is pregnant? Your mom may end up with another child raising experience in her future.
6:15 pm on January 13th, 2013
Wolfie, Didn’t mean to get all preachy on you. We just worry about you and your folks.
We are gearing up for 5 hours of Golden Globes. Long night ahead.
6:25 pm on January 13th, 2013
Wolfie: You let me know if you need any tips about being a midwife. My mama is getting me a knew whistle and I’d be happy to loan it to you.
6:28 pm on January 13th, 2013
We are cheering for the Texans, SiberH, but it is often hard to be a fan of pro sports in Houston. Mom and Dad are die hard Texans fans, but more often than not, we are waiting for them to shoot themselves in the foot. They always seem to screw up and screw up bad. Right now Mom is glad we’re not losing worse than we are.
6:28 pm on January 13th, 2013
Golden!…Globe awards…sniff!…Just the thing to bring me out of my blue funk…wheeze!….The Red Carpet is already humming…heh!heh!
6:31 pm on January 13th, 2013
And now we are…gah!
Wolfie’s, be sure to give all those cats time to adjust to each other. You will probably hear some hissing. And have your mom get that girl cat fixed! She will drive everybody crazy.

B.Stover, please ignore the incorrect use of the word “there”. My only excuse is the Pack has eaten my brain.

Bee – we agree. There is WAY too much sobbing in sports!
Wolfie – your Mom’s heart is bigger than the great outdoors. Just make sure that it doesn’t get broken.
Still wishing that we were in Florida. The dampness and fog are really playing havoc with arthritic joints.

Hey – our Dad gets a magazine called Indian Country. There is a very complimentary article about Hugh Neff and his sled dogs. Its in the magazine because Neff credits the Native people who took him in when he first moved to Alaska with starting him with his team. And he says he plays Native music for his dogs, cuz they like the drumbeats.
One quote from the article: “Winning (the Yukon Quest)was sucha special moment for me because I get more out of seeing my dogs get the respect they deserve than I do from any trophy.”
He calls his team “Veterans with an Attitude” starring Walter. And he says Walter is a great lead dog because he always knows the “the couch is right around the corner, and he wanted to get back on the sofa”.
He sounds like one of the good guys – we hope that its all true.

Neff is a nice guy we think. Will look him up tomorrow.
Going to watch a little more Golden Globes then off the bed. Nighty Noodles.

More rain! Gah! AJ gave the dogs a break today because of the rain and poor trail conditions. He did brave going into town and on the way home, helped someone who rolled their car.
