Sundays With Ingrid

When Ingrid walked into the kitchen, the Caddy safely back in the barn, Grampy was at the table eating peanuts, shells all over the place.

“A little nap,” he said. “Had it up to here with naps. Manage to keep yourself amused?”

“Yes,” Ingrid said. “Mr. Borum called. He said he heard a boom.”

From the expression on Grampy’s face, she could tell he wasn’t pals with Mr. Borum. “What did you tell him?” he asked.

“That we still had electricity.”

“Good girl,” said Grampy. “And honest, too. Peanuts?”

“No, thanks, Grampy. I better be getting home.”

“Take the pickup,” Grampy said.

Oh my God. “What did you say?”

Grampy laughed. “Just a little joke,” he said, rising. “Driving the tractor around the farm’s a lot different from a car on the open road. Don’t have to tell you that. You’re one of those kids with natural-born good judgment.”

Ingrid laughed too.

He drove her home in the pickup. Night had fallen. Grampy was quiet. The headlights bored a long tunnel in the darkness. Ingrid felt very safe there in the cab with Grampy, which was kind of crazy.

For no reason at all, she said, “You’re lucky, Grampy.”

“Hell, I know that,” said Grampy. “I’ve got you.”

He parked in front of 99 Maple Lane. Lights were on inside and the MPV was in the driveway. Ingrid opened the door, the manila envelope under her jacket.

“That little Greenpeace episode?” said Grampy. “Let’s keep it between you and me.”

Ingrid knew that wouldn’t be a problem. Secrets had different weights. The Greenpeace secret was a light one, easy to bear. Other secrets, she was learning, were much, much heavier.

“Night,” said Ingrid.

Grampy coughed. “Night,” he said, then coughed a few more times, the last one with a little wheeze at the end.

“Grampy, you all right?”

“One hundred and ten percent,” said Grampy.

From Down the Rabbit Hole.

Barb&Maggie: It was good to hear the fundraiser yesterday was a big success. Very heartwarming when everyone gathers together to help out.

B: The Music Festival sounds lovely!

Hi Rose! Third game today. That’s a pretty impressive wager you have going with the Pug.

Kirby: Was rereading the background of the Southern Carolina team (I always think of the University of Southern California when hearing USC, living on the West Coast and all) It is so interesting to hear the background on these things. Thank you.

    Good morning,all.

We have 100 +* of sunshine that we would be willing to auction off to youse guys for the benefit of Snowhook.

Excellent idea! If only the auction concept could work with the weather. Of course, the bidding would get quite frantic in some parts of the country and go for a very high price.

Good morning everybody. Great day here in Chevy Chase. Had a great walk this morning with my friend Baxter (a miniature poodle) and my mom’s best friend and her husband are here the weekend, which is very nice. We are also having a cool spell of sorts. Things are going great in the garden, and at the risk of generating great jealousy, we actually had our first tomatoes on Friday — two really yummy Cherokee Purples (a heirloom varietal). It’s the earliest we have ever had tomatoes, although part of it may be because they are planted in direct sunlight outside of the fenced in garden, where they are normally planted. For those of you who remember, we couldn’t use the fenced in garden because of the hornet nest problem (and of course there is also the story of why the fence was built in the first place–that unfortunate incident with me and Casey
and the asparagus patch). Anyways, got to rest up now for the Rockies-Yankees game later this afternoon. Wookie

    Love the prayer, Zen Kat!

That’s wonderful about the tomatoes, Wöökie. I’m seething with jealousy. My tomatoes are 3 inches tall. They were 2 inches when I set them out. NEED SUN!!

Oh, and Wöökie, we were thinking about a raised bed of asparagus, but with remembering your story, we might change our minds.

Dan is making phone calls and getting set!!
    HIS VACATION starts on THURSDAY!

He is stopping at his first cousin once removed’s place. He hasn’t seen her in over 70 years! Then he’ll be stopping at Zoë’s college roommate. He knew her before mom did because she was his minister’s daughter. Then to my brother’s!

All in Maine. My sister is taking him. She is off for the summer (she teaches) and thought of this plan.

Zoë and I will work on the pool. (a plethora of algae since all the rain) and have fun with the dogs. Something we both need.

Dan called my brother. Now what you need to know is that my brother gets his ability to plan for everyone else from my father. (Good thing Dan went into novels, because we just wouldn’t do as he plotted) When Dan started telling my brother what he had planned for his OWN vacation, my brother said, no that’s not how it’s working.

Snicker . . . Dan explained, nicely (much better than I would have done) that it is his vacation and this is the way it’s going to be. Guess what?

That’s the way it’s going to be!

Good afternoon, y’all! Mom and Dad talked about going somewhere today, but then they decided just to zone out and do stuff around here instead. One of the things they were doing was looking at the computer — that’s why I’m so late getting here, they don’t understand this is MY computer! They want to find a new place to go for New Year’s. I think I said before that the place where they used to go got eroded and all but one of the cabins were torn down. Last year they were able to reserve that one cabin, but this year somebody beat them to it. The good news is that some of the places they are looking at are pet-friendly, so if they choose one of those I’ll get to go! I’ve never been on vacation — is it fun?

Vacation!…. Don’t ask us. We haven’t been on a proper vacation in six lousy years…grump! …Although, she did say her and I are getting out of here and going to the mountains one day when she is off the week of the 4th of July…wooooo!

Waiting!…I think we are waiting for some guys to come and move some old furniture out of this house…sniff!… Her mother is driving everyone nuts today. More than usual it seems. So we are downstairs watching the game and staying away from her…grump!

    Rockies!….Are ahead by 1 homerun off of Wiggington…heh!…What a guy! What a hitter!…snort!

MagPie, tell Barb she is correct. Steve Guttenburg was in both. But now if that was him in the short video, it’s pretty old!

Kirby. Tell your family they have to find pet friendly and take you! Our Mama and Dad go to the beach every year for their anniversary. Last year the place they go invited US! We had a fabulous time. We walked on the beach (don’t like waves much) and since there were huge storms way offshore the waves were gigantic. Gilly was running and barking. Mama went to see what it was and Gilly had found a genuine blue lobster washed in on the waves. We threw it back into the deep water. We knew they were rare but not HOW rare til we got home and looked it up. But we’re still glad we threw it back. We also saw a big shark but don’t know what kind. And we went to the best ice cream stand in the world and had frozen pudding ice cream. Yummers!
Just today Mama confirmed that we are all going again this year Yippeee

Melanie, Maybe he just looks like Steve Guttenburg, and it’s not really him.

Ocean, Barb says one of her favorite vacations is at Kiawah Island. It is off the coast of Charleston, S.C. and is just lovely. Hilton Head is neat but more commercial. Her family has gone there and you can rent a house right on the ocean, or a row or 2 off the ocean. Expensive, but not really, if you have several parts of the family splitting it up. You can go over to Charleston for the day, or just hang out there at the ocean. Kirby, did your folks ever go there?.

T&G, here’s hoping your folks pick pet-friendly. We have never been on vacation either, but then again Mom & Pop can’t really go away on vacation much either, with all the horses and stuff. They did go to the convention in 2008 (we were not allowed) and they also went to St. Michaels in 2009. Mom wants to rent a house with a dock in St. Michaels that is pet-friendly, and rent a boat too. Not sure how we feel about that tho.

Rio: Coors! You joke, but an aunt of ours in Oregon would always request a delivery of this particular brand of brew when we visited. We kind of just shook our heads.

Bella: Have a great time while you are here and don’t work too hard!

Siber H: I don’t remember Rio getting “lambasted” for his play by plays. I did a few play by plays too. Maybe I missed the “lambasting”.

Snowhook Bella: Enjoy the no mosquitoes while you can.

Hi SnowBella! Didn’t get a chance to say hello to AJ last night – so Hello AJ!

    7:18 pm on June 26th, 2011

Dawson, I don’t remember much but I don’t think the “lambasting” was serious. I thought at the time that the person or persons (I don’t remember) were kidding.
We can’t all be interested in the same things. We’d be pretty boring if we were. For instance, I don’t watch the same tv programs that you guys do, but I sure don’t mind you discussing them.

Eeek, A new fire has errupted up in the Jemez that I can see from my back yard. Another new fire about 50 miles south of me along the Rio Grande.

    7:31 pm on June 26th, 2011

    Good grief!
I hope those fires are not caused by humans. I hope they can get them under control in a hurry. The rain here has stopped for the moment.

  83. Siber-H
    7:38 pm on June 26th, 2011

Yes,Bear, but there have been several fires over the past few years in the parts of the Jemez that we go to. We have seen burned over areas but won’t walk around in them because the dead trees could topple over at any time.

Eeek again, This new fire in the Jemez is burning toward Los Alamos. It moved 6 miles just this afternoon.

  84. Siber-H
    7:41 pm on June 26th, 2011

Dawson, the sick thing is that the fires are all human caused. There have been no clouds and no lightning.

When will it end. Siber-H and all those in fire ravaged areas could use some relief. And soon.

  86. BearSpiritDog

    Siber-H: Caused accidentally, I hope…

Bear, It will end of the monsoon ever comes. The monsoon isn’t late, but we all hope it shows up on schedule…maybe the middle of July.
Most of the fires are accidentally caused, but a lot of stupidity can be added to accidentally. A few over the years have been started by wildland firefighters (just a few) who wanted a job. No employment problems this year for the firefighters.

Homes are being evacuated up there now and Bandelier National Monument is being evacuated.

    Goodness Siber-H, stay safe!

Dan was telling me a fire fighting story yesterday. He and Zoë spent their honeymoon on top of a fire tower in OR. There was a fire that started and Dan and other guy who had a bulldozer when down to fight it. Zoë stayed on the fire tower as the communications person.

Dan said this guy was to bulldoze a fire break and Dan was to put out any small flares.
Unfortunately, the guy didn’t want to stop working so he kept pulling the coals over the fire break so the fire would start up again.

Dan said many bad words to him.

Dan also said that everyone else in department was great and fought fires with great skill.

Today he made a list of the things he’s taking with him on vacation. OTAS must get that from him! Because he sure doesn’t get it from me!

Off to bed. I am going to stay up on Tuesday if we have that surprise party for you know who!

Poor Rio, It doesn’t sound like a very relaxing weekend day for you.

My new computer comes tomorrow and then I have to start moving everything over to it.

Tuesday evening. I haven’t heard who is bringing what for the surprise party that Audrey is hosting in the east. At you know who’s house. I wish you guys would get on the stick and send in your dishes. As I said, I will be bringing in Carrot Cake. That is my idea of a great birthday cake. With cream cheese frosting!

Bear, we have not seen Secretariat. Good to hear you liked it…we will have to add that to our Netflix list.

Siber, we hate hearing about all those fires, and so close to you! We are trying to send rain your way, even tho we need it here too. But not as bad as you do. We are amazed that the fires are being started by humans. We thought they were just starting due to the heat and stuff.

Dawson, lots of bug bites here too, but none in the armpits. That is the PITs 🙂

Speaking of T.V., the new season of Burn Notice started last week. We have it recorded but have not watched it yet. Thats our favorite T.V. show.

WE could certainly set up a grill. It is nice and wet in the east so we don’t have to worry about fires. Do we? I hope Dawson has enough notice and can get there. If that road is out it might make it hard for her to leave.

I think we need a two legged to do the grilling though. We wouldn’t want anyone to singe off their hair. Volunteers?

uh, Maskers, you will need to bring salmon fillets for more than just the kats. Alice and I are really into salmon bonbons, also.
I can bring New Mexico food.

The fires are burning in the opposite direction of me. We won’t even get any smoke from them because of the direction of the wind.

Causes of some of the fires:
A campfire abandonded and not COMPLETELY put out by campers
A spark from an ATV crossing a railroad track.
A vehicle parked over dry brush.
This is how dry it is here.

My sentiments exactly, Rio. We need another kind of cake in addition to carrot cake. Carrot cake is for girls.
Stover is going to need to bring more than one pie.

Barb says carrot cake is her favorite, especially with cream cheese frosting. Yum!

And we are so jealous of Wookie for having tomatoes already. Cherokee Purple is one of the best. Our tomatoes are just starting to bloom, which puts us about a month behind them. Ahead of Melanie, however.

We have to say good night, too. Off to read a little Sacred Clowns, by Hillerman.

BEARS !!! WE HAVE BEARS IN THE BACKYARD!!

This is kind of scary. There is a large bear in the neighborhood that one of the IDIOT neighbors is feeding. So now the bear is hanging out, looking for food.

The bear came right into our fenced in yard today, and Gilly just about barked herself hoarse trying to either scare him away, or herd him. We’re not sure what she was trying to do, and she got herself into such hysteria that she didn’t come when she was called.

Mama had to yell at our Grampa – he was outside watching the bear. He said that it was in case it decided to climb the neighbors’s house. Mama asked him just what he thought he would have done it it did. Oh….he didn’t think of that.

Anyway – we will be at the party and we can bring a cake. Siber and Rio – would you prefer Spicy Pineapple Upsidedown Cake, White Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting and Guava Filling or just a good old double chocolate cake (maybe with cherry filling?)

Yippee it sounds like the Wookie/Spence party is a go. I vote for Pineapple upside down cake AND Double Chocolate.

    YUmmers.

I, Staff, will ‘man’ the grill, but I want some concrete barriers around it so when the Huskies and Newf’s start running around like crazy dogs they won’t knock it over. Or me either. I don’t like being knocked over.
