Sundays (And This One Saturday, Too) With Ingrid

Ingrid Levin-Hill sat in math class, her mind wandering pleasantly. She had the best seat in the house—very back of the outside row by the windows, about as far as could be from the teacher, Ms. Groome. Ferrand Middle School stood on a hill overlooking the river, about a mile upstream from the falls. There was always something interesting to see on the river, especially if you, like Ingrid, were in the habit of noticing little details. Little details like how the water ruffled up as it flowed around a rock, and a big black bird drifting on the current, wings tucked under its chin, and—

“Ingrid? I trust I have your attention?”

Ingrid whipped around. Ms. Groome was watching her through narrowed eyes, and her eyes were narrow to begin with.

“One hundred percent,” said Ingrid, in the faint hope of pacifying Ms. Groome with math talk.

“Then I’m sure you’re excited about MathFest.”

MathFest? What was Ms. Groome talking about? The word didn’t even make sense, one of those contradictions in terms. “Very excited,” said Ingrid.

“Just in case Ingrid happened to miss any of this,” said Ms. Groome, “who wants to sum up

MathFest?”

No one did.

“Bruce?” said Ms. Groome.

Brucie Berman, middle row, front seat, class clown. His leg was doing that twitchy thing.

“MathFest be my guest,” said Brucie.

“I beg your pardon?”

Brucie tried to look innocent, but he’d been born with a guilty face. “Three lucky kids from this class get to go to MathFest,” he said.

“And MathFest is?”

“This big fat fun math blowout they’re having tomorrow,” said Brucie.

“Not tomorrow,” said Ms. Groome. “Saturday morning, eight thirty, at the high school.”

“Even better,” said Brucie.

Ms. Groome pursed her lips, totally focused now on Brucie. There was lots to be said for having Brucie in class. Ingrid tuned out, just in time to catch that big black bird disappear around a bend in the river. No way this had anything to do with her, no way she’d be one of the chosen three. She shouldn’t even have been in this section, Algebra Two. There were four math classes in eighth grade— Algebra One for the geniuses, Algebra Two for good math students who didn’t rise to the genius level, Pre- Algebra, where Ingrid should have been and would have been happily, if her parents hadn’t crawled on their knees to Ms. Groome, and Math One, formerly remedial math, for the kids out on parole.

Math blowouts on Saturday morning. Who thinks these things up? Grown-ups, of course, the kind with a sense of humor like that warden in Escape from Alcatraz. Ingrid was half aware of Ms. Groome scrawling long chains of numbers on the blackboard, all dim and fuzzy. She wrote a note—What’s the word for stuff like giant midget or MathFest?—balled it up, and tossed it discreetly over to Mia’s desk across the aisle. Mia was the smartest kid in the class, should have been in Algebra One, but she and her mom had moved from New York last year and the school had messed up.

Mia flattened out the note, read it, wrote an answer. The sun, one of those little late fall suns, more silver than gold, shone on Mia’s hand—her fingers, skin, everything about her, so delicate. She rolled the note back up, flicked it underhanded across the aisle. Ingrid reached for it, but all at once, so sudden she wasn’t sure for a moment that it had really happened, another hand darted into the picture and snatched the note out of the air. Nothing delicate about this hand, skin scaly, knuckles all swollen.

“What could be so important?” said Ms. Groome, unfolding the note. “I’m dying to find out.” The sun glared off fingerprints on her glasses, hiding her eyes. She read the note, stuck it in her pocket, returned to the front of the class. Her mouth opened, just a thin sharklike slit. Some withering remark was on the way, but at that very moment, like a message from above, the bell rang.

Class over! Saved by the bell! Chairs started scraping all over the room as the kids got up. Hubbub, and lots of it. Thanksgiving couldn’t come soon enough.

“Just a second,” said Ms. Groome, not so much raising her voice over the bedlam as cutting through it like an ice pick. Everyone froze. “We still haven’t chosen our MathFest team.”

Brucie raised his hand.

“Thank you, Bruce. Congratulations.”

“Oh, no,” said Brucie. “Wait. I was just going to say let’s do it tomorrow.”

Ms. Groome didn’t seem to hear. “Any volunteers for the other two spots?”

There were none.

“Then the pleasure will be mine,” said Ms. Groome. She smiled, if smiling meant the corners of the mouth twisting up and teeth making a brief appearance. “Mia. Ingrid. Everybody wish our team good luck.”

“Go team,” said everybody, in a great mood because it wasn’t them.

“But wait,” said Brucie.

Oh no Ingrid: Math Fest at 8:30 Saturday morning? That's enough to make you hate math.

Melanie: I must've missed a prior post about potatoes. I am glad you found them. It's nice to have 10 Newfs to blame things on as needed.

Looks like a scorcher today – but no complaints about the weather because I'll be inside an air-conditioned hospital for 12 hours. Well, I could complain about that.

What would be interesting–in the sense of moving the mystery along–is if Chet and Bernie found Albie's body.

I'm glad you found the potatoes Melanie. It's going to be hot here also Dawson. Plus we have rain, thunderstorms and flooding in the forecast.

I hope AbbieKat's staff feels okay.

I got up early with Mom to help her get ready to go ride in the Tour de Cure. My girl will sleep until noon so now I can go nap with her. See you later. Zzzzz.

HA!… I love Brucie Berman… heh!… What a guy. My friend ordered the Echo Falls series and we thought for sure they would be here by now, but NO!… drat! …That Ms. Groome is hilarious too….snort!….Love the line, “The sun glared off fingerprints on her glasses, hiding her eyes.”…heh!… Well, I am being drug along for a long walk before it gets too Hot here…toodles!!grunt!

I don't like Ms. Groome. I think she's a jerk. But, that ending was funny. I'm still laughing.

I can't wait to see how MathFest works out for Ingrid, Mia, and Brucie. Maybe they'll mess it up-that's my best guess-but considering that Mia's on the team, I guess that isn't possible. Still, it'd be funny to see Ms. Groome's face turn red when they loose or whatever they do. I don't know. I'd just like to see Ms. Groome really mad. Ha.

Heh!… I laughed all the way around the park and our neighborhood over that Brucie raising his hand there at the end…”But wait,”…. Ha!… I hope tomorrow’s installment will be during the MathFest…snort!… For some strange reason I think Brucie Berman is a lot like Peter Abrahams was in the eighth grade… grunt!… I don’t know why, just a hunch I guess. Remember the puddle story?…heh!

I'm hoping that PA had it a bit more together than Brucie does. Brucie reminds me of the kid in my 9th grade class that had been promoted along. He was definately ADHD. The school was an old one, brick, large windows and two stories. This guy would slowly back his desk into the closet and then disappear through a hole in the closet ceiling and wander around up there between the floors.

No one in authority knew or they just didn't care.

OOOOOHHHHH, I don’t like Ms. Groome. Just don’t like her at all. One of the World’s nastiest teacher.

Dan really liked the Echo Falls series. I kept pressing him to read them. And he said, “They’re for younger people, I like adult books.”

I finally put the first one in his hands and said, “READ IT!”

He couldn’t put them down until he was done with all three.

Hmmm, Spence must be figuring out how to open the gate . . Hope he figures it out soon and not in the Distant Future. I think Albie has done a BUNK! Maybe someone even nastier is after him.

Oh, we found the baked potatoes! Zoë had taken them out of the microwave and decided to put them back in for a couple of more minutes, and put them (plus potato pouch) in the freezer. We had them last night! So the Pack was not at fault, they usually are, and no trips to the vet to get a pouch out.

It's true, Sam, about the weather out west. It is suppose to get between 100 and 102 here today. This isn't our normal high termperatures this time of year. I'm dying. There is nothing to do but stay inside under the ac.

Dawson? How hot is it suppose to be today where you live?

Rio's forecast is a high of 85 with a 30% chance of rain.

Plus we had to wait an hour and a half to get the slop!… wheeze!… She was disgusted, but we were just glad to spend some time with her as her heart is really acting up lately… sigh

    SPOILER ALERT FOR LIGHTS OUT

My reason is complex. Very simply, there are too many endings and I didn't care for the final one. Eddie starts like the albatross in the Ancient Mariner–innocent victim. Then the novel becomes an allegory of the Fall, just as the poem is. There is crime and punishment but no redemption (again like the Mariner who "hath penance done, and penance more will do." That line is quoted in the novel). "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" has never been one of my favorites either. It all comes down to my problem believing in such pessimism. (Sorry, I know that you liked it.)

  34. Riö - The Evil

    ***Spoiler Alert for Lights Out!***

I saw Eddie being redeemed by his ability to forgive his brother for all the wrong that was wrought upon him in and out of prison, to the point of trying to save Jack’s pitiful life. I have never studied the prevalent poem, and could only relate to the passages that were put in the story. Maybe, you, like Eddie were trying to hard to figure out the meaning of the poem in relation to his story. And please, do no be sorry for your honest opinion of the novel!

Rio, it is 106 in Phoenix. I don't know how they play baseball in that oven. I could care less how hot it gets for the Snakes, but the Rockies are there!

Mom is reading "The Fan" by PA right now. She is having a hard time putting it down, and like PA's other books, she has no idea where the story is going. Hey, Rio, it has some funny things in it like "Their Wildest Dreams".

    SPOILER ALERT FOR LIGHTS OUT

Eddie went beyond forgiving his brother: He revenged the castration of his brother and his ultimate death by going back into prison and killing El Rojo. He doesn't need his watch back at the end because he's there for life and apparently does not care. That's why I say there is no redemption. It seems to me that that ending is pessimistic for the sake of being pessimistic. I have a hard time "buying it." (In the poem the Mariner kills the albatross so it is his crime for which he pays penance. That is not the case with Eddie.)

    SPOILER ALERT FOR LIGHTS OUT

Well, my problem with that is that Eddie did not grow up in prison. He was 19 when he went to prison. Granted, he did not have a good childhood, but he had "Uncle" Ted (I think that was his name), he had swimming which he loved, and he had a scholarship. Also, he didn't feel safe in prison. What he learned there was to protect himself the prison way, and to revenge wrongs done to him. What I see in Eddie is a life completely wasted. I suppose in reading a novel of the mystery genre, one wants justice at the end. That is not what we have here.

  47. Siberian Husky

I love fireflies. When they come and all light up at the same time, it's quite a show. They may not like it out west where it's too dry.

Gotta watch the Molly Owl Box – the owlets will come out soon. Only 2 left out of 4 to officially fledge. The 2 that already did, haven't gone far, but don't return to the owl box to sleep in the day.

Our air conditioning comes from up above, also, but we like to snooze in front of fans. That is the life!!

Poor Bernie. He is stuck, halfway up and halfway down, on top of the gate. I think I've changed my mind. Chet is a good leaper!! He'll do fine.

But – I wonder if Bernie is having a "hunch" about Albie. Most of us don't usually climb over gates when nobody answers the door. (Well, I guess I can only speak for myself!)

Bernie is obviously feeling a sense of urgency. I wonder if he'll find a dead body, and if so, who?

I've never seen a firefly either. Mom saw them when she was a kid. Molly might have hit upon the reason we don't have fireflies.

    I don't know what a glowworm is.

Bee, We agree with you on Lights Out. SPOILER ALERT! First ending was probably better than second ending. Final scene on the beach would have kept one wondering if maybe there was a happy ending for Eddie.

It has been an interest and scary evening here in northwestern Illinois. Big storms and winds. Our barn is no more. 100 year old Maple tree has crashed on top of it. The 2 goats are on the side that is not flattened and are ok. Chickens have their own coop and are ok. But what a mess! Cleanup will take a couple of weeks. Thanks be to the insurance company for repairs, and a higher being for no losses of life !

We are going to bed for the night. Rio, Barb deals with these things just fine as long as there are no losses of life. It was a metal pole barn, not a beautiful old barn that couldn't be replaced. It can be rebuilt. If the animals had been killed, she would have been in tears. Material things are not that important. SPOILER – LIGHTS OUT – Eddie was not a bad person, even thought he did bad things in prison. We hoped his life would have taken a differnt turn after his release. It was still good fiction!

Siber H.: It only got to about 72 degrees today. It's 60 now at 9:30. So it wasn't the scorcher I expected. I was freezing all day with the ac in the hospital. And: I read all the spoilers to Oblivion a while back and by the time I read the book, suffice it to say nothing was spoiled.

Barb and Maggie: So sorry about your barn and old maple tree.

Glad no one was hurt though.

Staff: Quadruple Ouch. I know we'd here from you if you weren't hurting. My sympathy goes out to you.

Fireflies: When I was a young girl in Indiana I would collect a jarful of fireflies before bedtime then read under the covers by the light of fireflies after lights out. In the morning I would have a jar of dead fireflies. Only place I've lived that had fireflies. I'm glad they still exist.

Mom just read a very interesting book tonight called "Making Rounds With Oscar." It was writtn by an MD who works at a nursing home and one of the staff cats who always knew when somebody was about to die. Oscar would snuggle up to the patient, comfort them, and comfort the families.

I think dogs and cats should be allowed everywhere. We add such a wonderful ambience to any room, don't you think?

    HI guys,

I just stopped in to read the blog and then go to sleep. Tomorrow we travel down to the twin cities and hopefully Monday I will be allllll better!

Mollypop, I just read "Wesley the Barn Owl" It's subtitle is "the remarkable story of an owl and his girl" I really liked it. I am a sucker for animal stories.

See, see, everyone…Dawson is just like me. She can read all the spoiler alerts and they don't ruin anything for her.

Could get up to 102 here today. No way could I get Dawson to trade places with me right now. I'm stuck here in a Stephen King novel.

    SPOILER ALERT FOR LIGHTS OUT

Barb&Maggie and Rio: I actually thought that there were three endings and I preferred the "first" which to me is right after Eddie leaves JFK and is riding the bike to the hippie house: "Eddie pedaled JFK's bike. The track widened slightly, grew smoother. Soon he would see the white house on the bluff, the hippie house with the peace sign on the roof. Five or ten minutes had passed without a single thought of Jack. That was good. That was the way it would have to be. He came to the bluff, saw a lane leading up to the house, paused" (300).

That is beautiful writing. I'd love that as the ending. However, I realize that many would not. "You can please some of the people some of the time."

I'm glad you and the animals are okay but sorry about your barn B&M. Hope everything is getting better soon AbbieKat's Staff.

Wolfie: To answer your question: "Whose" is the possessive pronoun and, as I recall, that is what you wanted in your sentence above. "Who's" is the contraction meaning "who is."

  90. BARB & MAGGIE
    8:30 am on June 6th, 2010

Thanks for all the concern from our friends out there. We are attaching a pic of the barn for you to see. SPOILER FOR LIGHTS OUT. Bee, I guess you are right – there were 3 endings. It was as though Mr. A wrote one, and then wasn't quite happy with it, so wrote another and another.

Barb read the book about Wesley the Barn Owl a couple of years ago. She thought it was interesting and touching, but all the detail about dispatching the thousands of mice was a little gory. I mean, we know they are rodents and they are destructive, but they are living creatures, too. Too much about the "mice on ice" for us.

The storm hit us about 40 minutes ago, It got very dark, thunder and lightening and high winds, and torrential downpours, but fortunately it lasted only about 15 minutes. Puppy Shower! We need to finish planning the Puppy Shower!

I vote for July 10!! We haven't decided on a location yet, but since it's virtual, we can have it anywhere. I vote that we have it somewhere cool and green, with a big lawn for dog games, and a nice clear lake and no mosquitos!! Ohhh, we should have some fireflies for Rio, and maybe we can have some snow delivered for Cyber H.

I hope that Staff will be able to get all ten-ish quilts finished in time. She has had a nasty toothache but if she pulls a few all-nighters, she should be able to get her done.

Thanks to Dawson, all the puppy snacks have been ordered. Yumo O.

    Queen Bee is making pies.

    Sam is making the cakes.

Lexi and Megan are leading puppy games.

Rio and his Friend are making puppy favors. (I can't wait to see what they decide upon!)

    I, Wolfie, am the Planner.

So…..we need an official pooper scooper. Any volunteers?

Plus we need somebody to BBQ the people food. (Steaks for the dogs, also! Plus some steak tips for Chet!) Unless we want to have it catered? That might be the easiest thing. I wonder if Bobby Flay is busy that day? He throws a mean BBQ.

I'll be back, gotta go check the previous posts. Don't nobody be mad, okay. BRB.

Instead of waiting until Tuesday for the c-section, she's going in tomorrow morning. That's if she makes it through the night without having any.

Pictures in the afternoon tomorrow! Have to bring Gracie out of the anesthesia, make sure the pups are healthy and nursing. The vet is 90 minutes away. But, he's the only one around here who is trained in large animals and for some reason, other vets think that Newfoundlands are large animals.

Wookie, we had that storm front go through. It's why we were not on line for a good long time. Yesterday, tornado warnings, today, tornado watches. YIKES. And in Phoenix it's 111 degrees. (I remember a math test in a boring class, a bit like Ingrid's, where for every single answer I put down 111. My parents did not get mad. Boy, I wish they had, I got the TALKING to, notice I did not say with, why did you do this, do you not know how to do this? The truth was I was reading a really good book and we were allowed to read if we finished the test, so I just filled it in so I could read. Made sense to me!)

"But I was going to say when Truth broke in

With all her matter-of fact about the"

    math class, (snicker)

Climate Change is an interesting concept.

That's sweet Wolfie-snow for me. I appreciate that, especially now.

I am probably taking the Grace and PUPPY thing harder than Melanie is. She knows what she is doing, and we have never had PUPPIES. Maybe this is why we have never had PUPPIES. I'm glad Grace is going in tomorrow instead of Tuesday.

Wolfie, I'll volunteer my mom to be a pooper scooper. She is experienced as she and Molly's mom go around and pick up all the poop at the dog park most morning so the park will have a clean start to the day.

    Rockies Won!!!

Melanie, Why is she having a c-section?

Rio, I didn't really say it was a bad ending, it was a great writing ending. I just wanted Eddie to have happy ever after life. Probably not very realistic, right?

Uh Oh!… Now its our turn again to be in the storm center… yeep!… Its right over us and they are saying hail along with the lightnig and thunder again… snort!… We were going to leave to go to dinner, but have postponed that for a while to see if the hail stones pass us by… grunt!… Our car got beat up enough in that really big tornado a few years back… sniff!… She’s not chancing it again. … wheeze!…. I’m hungry dammit!

Gracie is having a C section? It that because there are so many?

Or is this something that was planned all along? I can't believe we have to wait until tomorrow!! Oh well, it's better to be safe!

I couldn't seem to find the other posts about the party, although I did come across that recipe for Shoo Fly Pie.

And I did find Dawson's postings on the bakery goodies, but it made me drool so much that mom made me go outside. She was afraid I would short out the laptop.

Cyber H – that is awesome that your mom is going to be a pooper scooper. Tell her thanks from all of us!

Rio said something about having the party at Melanie's, but those 18 newfies are going to be keeping her pretty busy. Besides, she said that they have BIG mosquitos!

Cyber – we'll have lots and lots of snow for you!! At least an acre! And I think that lots of the Pack will enjoy.

Wookie is going to be the Master of Ceremonies.

Barb and Magpie – I forget what you are signed up for, but it sounds as if you be doing a barn raising. So, all you need to do is show up. I think that certain pugs are expecting some beer, so you can bring that. But since we'll have so many young-ums around, let's make it non-alcoholic. Besides, Rio promised Lexi.

Are Frosty Paws considered to be Junk Food? Just wondering.

    2:24 pm on June 6th, 2010

Ooh. I-I feel kinda dizzy. Rio? Was-was that resolution that we made for you, does-does it mean I can't have beer, too? Ooh.

It's stormy over here. Wooh. Maybe I'm just-just imagining it…ow, my head.

Melanie – are you going to get any sleep tonight or will you be on Puppy Watch?

We haven't had any puppies here since Teddy had 11. But puppies have got to be the sweetest things on the planet. Well, all babies are, really. Even humans.

  133. Melanie
    2:28 pm on June 6th, 2010

Dan, Zoë and I will deliver puppies if necessary. We will deliver up to six on our own, but ten is a bit much to do safely. We are so far from a vet, that it's better for mom and pups to do the c-section.

We've had joys and sorrows delivering pups. So paws and fingers crossed everyone!

Riö! Don't go out in the hail!

Wolfie, Frosty Paws are made by Purina. I don't think they are exactly junk food. Lexi could have one. We will need a lot of Frosty Paws.

Lexi – You are a good girl. Just a teensy bit teenager – ish. I’m glad your mommy is coming home tomorrow because I think you a tiny bit calmer when your mommy is around. Not only does it take a village to riase a child, it takes a Pack to raise a Lexi.

Barb and Magpie – We’ll put you on burger flipping duty if you don’t mind. Hey, PA is a big shot writer. Maybe HE can ask Bobby Flay if he can cater the Shower for us? Please?

Poor Bess is so worried that she has passed out, upside down. Poor dear.

Gracie… A little prayer for her tonight, as she is in all our thoughts….sniff!

Lord of all Creation, tonight we await the arrival of many new lives. Please give strength and healing to our Gracie as she becomes the new mother of so many puppies. Please, Lord, place in her the mothering nature she will need to take care of them once they are born. We ask that Gracie will not suffer much in this birthing process and also that all her puppies are born healthy and strong. Lord, I ask that you watch over all the people who care and worry about her during this exciting, happy and incredible time of new birth! Amen!
