Summing Up

“Anything with ‘merry’ in it can’t be bad,” Elise said.

    Good morning everyone!
Love the “anything with merry in it”.
Mom went to school with a girl named Merry Gale. She called her
    “Happy Windstorm”.
    Satisfied Saturday to all.

It was another lovely day today. A bit overcast except for a few min. of sun this afternoon. High of 76 so really quite ideal for going to the beach area for a day of coursing. More like a day of waiting.

Freyja and I were supposed to have a class at noon, then three rounds of beginners coursing starting at 1. The class didn’t start until 1 and we only got one round as there were maybe 25 dogs. She did not exactly make her mark. She was not the best by far but also not the worst.

For the class run, she did run out and eventually finish the course but she was distracted by gopher holes, then had to pee, then ran, then pooped and while my back was turned coming back with her full poop bag, she once again picked up the lure and ran in to the finish. It was the only time she actually completed the course. The three rounds for the second run that was supposed to start at 1 didn’t start to likely 2:30. We didn’t leave until 4pm. There were 15 dogs with three runs each. Some dogs didn’t run or stopped and returned to their owners and some were really great.

Freyja was not the only dog to poop on the course, nor the only one to pee or the only one to decide to go explore gopher holes.

She did have a great time. It was a good bonding experience for us as she doesn’t often get to spend time with me alone.

The lady running it suggested I try her at home with a practice lure. It is basically a huge cat wand. Tie a favorite toy to the end of a pole and drag it around the yard for her to chase. I’ll see if my sister or my parents have an old fishing pole.

The bottom line is she has a prey drive but it easily distracted. So either she’ll learn to concentrate on chasing the lure with practice or she’ll “pull a husky” and decide, I’ve already done this. What’s the point? In which case I’ll try her with scentwork. If it turns out Freyja doesn’t have the aptitude for coursing I’ll either cancel the classes in November or maybe I’ll bring Diana and see if she likes it. There was a shepherd and a labrador that really tore through the course. Diana might like it. Or it might be too much effort. You can never tell with her.
