“Would you say Audrey’s storm-phobic?” says Spence.

“Big time,” says Admin.

“Here’s a link to a possible technological solution.”

“But what’s it all about?” Admin says. “For example, I like storms, and so do most people I know. If they’re inside, of course.”

“Whereas Audrey seems to want to go outside in it, the more frightened she gets.”

“Not sure we can generalize from Audrey.”

Good morning, y’all! Storms don’t bother me too much — as long as I’m inside with Mom and Dad. However, when Dad tries to take me outside to do my business in the rain, I’m not so happy about that! He has to drag me off the porch, and then I try to huddle under the umbrella with him. Not a fan of water. Audrey looks like she’s having fun, though. Maybe swimming at the beach would be a whole ‘nother thing altogether. I’ll get to try that if Mom and Dad take me to the beach with them for New Year’s. Just don’t expect any pictures like that of me — I just haven’t got the hair for it!!!

Good morning. Nope, storms don’t bother us. We do not like to do our business in the rain, either!

Top of the Morning to you, Kirby, and greetings to everyone!

Another beautiful day here in Westchester!

Kirby: I am very afraid of thunder and ligthning, even when I am inside the house! Guess I’m just a scaredy kat, like my awesome kat Kelly was! We were exactly alike…both moody, both didn’t say too much, both HATE getting wet!!!!!

Audrey looks like she’s having a great time on the beach.

Audrey!… Why does she want to go out in the storm when she’s afraid of it?…snort!…That girl is all backwards. Everyone knows you need to be under a bed during a storm…sniff! …Take last night for instance; there was thunder and lightning most of the night…huffle!…No one got any sleep at all because some one was running from room to room trying to get under a bed….snuff!…I’m getting the evil-eye again from her mother….gruffle!

Good morning. I don’t like to go out in the rain either, but I am sort of neutral about storms.
Audrey looks like she might be a water retriever type dog, so I bet she loves it. Spence never did tell us exactly what her heritage might be. I think lab-retriever mix, curly coated retriever, that sort of genetics.

Bee, are you going to the farmer’s market this morning?

Barb is off for errands, so I will nap till she gets back. BBL

Molly’s Mom here. Thank you all for all of my Big Birthday hoopla. I have to go back to catch up on yesterday. I got some intestinal disturbance a week ago, waited for it to go away, and then yesterday it was worse than ever. I made it through the lunch party, but had to go to bed before the third course of dinner was over. This morning I’ve been to the doctor and the lab – now I have to go back to bed.

Thank you for the anniversary wishes. Thanks to BlueCat for the floral offering. I appreciate them.

Alice M. Johnson is terrified of thunder and lightning. She gets low to the ground and slinks around and if you pick her up she sort of sinks into your arms. If she can she goes into a closet or basement and if she can’t she curls up into a little ball of misery. She is also very quiet. No sound at all. Poor little mite.

The summer of 2001 (when she was born and abandoned in our woods) was one of many storms. Trees down in the woods and the road. Lots of excitement for storm lovers, but not for a starving little kitten.

I am off to quilt all day with my friends. BBWL

    Staff, Congratulations!

The Pack loves rain, snow, ice, hail, drizzle, mist, sleet . . .

Franklin does not like thunder and lightning. He wants to be in Zoë’s lap, or on her head. This is difficult since he weighs 167 pounds.

The article has some good ideas. Dogs are not aware of how big they are. Our Pack seems to have gotten their ideas of size from when they were around 8 weeks old. They try to go into places their heads will fit (8 weeks old are about the size of Frank’s head) and just let the rest of their bodies do the best they can.

Now Rose has an anxiety wrap. This does help keep her focus. We used it as a bathing suit for the first two weeks in the pool. She kept trying to save the other dogs by dunking them under. Way too anxious. This is not normal Newf behavior, which is why Rose has NEVER been a mother.

She’s much better now and really enjoys the swimming. Speaking of which, it’s time to get Diver Dave (the vacuum) working.

Later & later each day we are!

Rio, from last night: we were laughing at your description of the working pugs at the end of their day, drinking beer and smoking cigars!

Maybe those Anxiety Wraps Audrey mentioned would be the perfect solution for all of you who are afraid during storms (hmm..I wonder if they work on humans)

Staff: We also were not around at that time, but happy anniversary to you on this day. It is good to hear all is going well. BTW: SDD messge received. The books will be speeding their way to you as of Monday.

Rose: Kelly Kat was our kind of gal. I envy you your beautiful day, my friend. It is overcast and raining here.

B: We are happy to hear the Harry Potter series ended so well. I imagine Rowlings must be relieved, in a sense, to be out from under the seemingly unending pressure of having to constantly outdo herself. It is quite an accomplishment for an author – appealing to both young and old as she does.

Staff: Since I am fearless even during the wildest of storms I was surprised to hear Alice is so fearful of them. One would never believe it from looking at her pictures – looking like such a kalm kool kat.

  17. Kirby T. Penworthy

Mom likes storms too, but not the kind that turns houses into frisbees and drops trees on them.

It isn’t funny to watch a dog stick his or her head into a tiny place and think that they are completely hidden, which is why mom always feels bad for laughing.

The weather has been perfect here with temps in the 80’s. It won’t last. Dang.

I’m guessing that Audrey wants to go outside when it is storming because she thinks by doing so she will get away from the storm. They think that is the same reason dogs are likely to try to escape from their yards on the Fourth of July…to get away from the noise. This isn’t logical, I know, but when dogs are in the phobic mode, they are not thinking straight.

Mom would recommend trying Composure instead of Rescue Remedy because to hopefully be effective, Rescue Remedy has to be given several days in advance of the storm. Composure can be given at the onset of the storm. Pet stores and Amazon sell Composure. Mom has it on her list to buy the next time she goes to PetsMart in case we ever have a bad thunderstorm here. That is not looking very likely right now.

I’m not too bad about thunderstorms, but mom is still going to try Composure. I’m phobic about water.

  21. Masquers
    1:41 pm on July 16th, 2011

Siber-H: I do not like water either. Not exactly a kat thing. In general, when in a phobic mode, to not be thinking straight would be a common reaction in all species, human included. So you are not alone. The Composure works well for my canine friend. I of course, being the fearless one, do not need any such remedies. Although sometimes this attitude can be unwise and even dangerous. For example: the other night when I stood up to Ricky the Raccoon when he came into the backyard & up on the deck – inches away from a open backdoor…..

    1:43 pm on July 16th, 2011

B&M: Yes I went to farmer’s market and bought some lovely asparagus. Also went to the regular market and bought more mangoes. Yum!

Rowlings is starting a website on Harry Potter in October. From there one can download the series as ebooks. That’s the only way one can get them on an iPad, Kindle or Nook because “they” have not allowed it up to this point. It’s for the money of course. I have enjoyed the series and the movies but she is not one of my favorite people.

There was a bit of wonderfluffing in the kennel last night. I brushed the coats of each dog. Some appreciated it more than others; Howard liked the one on one attention, yet complained that at his age the extra fur is what is holding him together.

I receieved several checks in the mail yesterday for auction items. As a result, I sent many emails last night to Plunderers that the items they donated for the auction can be shipped. If my tracking is correct, we’re waiting for payment from only a few individuals for auction items.

I enjoyed reading the notes and cards many included with the payments—thank you.

Yesterday’s full moon is called Full Buck Moon because bucks begin to grow new antlers at this time. It’s also called the Thunder Moon because of the frequent thunderstorms (in the east) during July. All of this is according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

So, your Canine friend tried Composure and it worked? Mom first learned about Composure when a vet recommended it for a friend’s dog. Mom and her friend researched it as best they could. We are going to try it instead of Rescue Remedy.

Siber-H: On occasion entire families of raccoons have been seen crossing the yard in back. They seem to exist in large numbers here and grow to be quite large. Problems occur when they get into the trash, scattering it everywhere. > The Composure does seem to have a calming effect. I think it works well for some dogs. See what you think. It’s worth a try. That anxiety wrap is also supposed to do the trick, however you wouldn’t catch moi in one. “Catch” being the operative word here. heh, heh.

MollyPop: Tell your mom I hope she feels better soon. It is a bummer to be sick on your birthday!

Masquers and Siber-H: Composure? Is it a tincture like the Rescue Remedy? Masquers, did you give it to Ricky?

I am FREEZING! 3 hours in the pool today, and it is looking GOOD!
That piece of carpola filter and pump wasn’t big enough for any pool much less the size we have and what we use it for!

So today I was vacuuming. Diver Dave had the right idea and he will be great once all the carpola is off the bottom, but today the vacuum needed a guiding hand.

We backwashed the sand filter more times today than people do in a year! AND cleaned the catch basin almost as often!

Zoë brought me hot tea while I was in the Pool. I have now had a HOT shower and I’m drinking hot coco. I have on a sweatshirt, shirt, heavy jeans and socks and shoes! I might sleep with my mattress warmer on. BRRRRR

Masqueres, I agree…It sure wouldn’t hurt to try Composure. That calming stuff works on some dogs and some it doesn’t. Mom is mumbling something about giving me Composure before I go to the groomers. I told her that the groomer would probably even pay for it.

Bee, Barb has never gone to a Harry Potter movie or read any of her books. We have never been able to get into it either, but when we have seen snipets of the movies on tv, they look interesting.

Barb got a Netflix movie to watch tonight or tomorrow. Can’t remember the name of it but Hal Holbrook and Dixie Carter star in it, about an elderly man who is in a nursing home and decided to walk back home. Maybe the title is something like the Long Walk Home. Has anyone seen it and is it worthwhile?

We have moved and what a kerfuffle! Where is my water? Where is my food? Got bones? What about my fetch toys? I needn’t have worried because my mom took care of it all. She had all my favorite people to haul things in and out. It took 2 hours to load the truck, one hour to drive to the new apartment, and 45 minutes to unload the truck. I didn’t know where to go or what to do, so I just went everywhere and did everything. I’ve had a couple of tinkles outside, and so far, I’m getting used to the new place. Ugh! I am exhausted and it’s time for a nap.

Melanie: Good news about the Royals’ mum! > PotterMore must be what Kirby and B were referring to earlier. > No, we didn’t get a chance to try out the Composure on Ricky as he made a quick exit when mom was taking pictures. It may have worked. You can spray it on a blanket or other clothing item for a calming effect. Siber_H: the actual product we used was called Comfort Zone Spray, containing DAP, which mimics a natural comforting pheromone produced by dogs.
B: We suspect Rowling’s current persona may be the result of her earlier feelings of inferiority. She seemed to avoid publicity and personal interviews when first becoming popular.

Oh, now the comfort thing. When the Ladies would be coming into heat and the males were still intact, we would use something that gave off the smell or pheromones of a nursing bitch. I don’t think that would work as a chewable. 🙂 snicker

I feel like I’ve spent the day at the beach! Exhausted!
Luckily, I didn’t have to vacuum up sand dunes.

Mom turned the computer for me. She thinks she has the same problem as that guy in the movie Alien.

Here’s the story: Sam’s dad went to South America and came back with this same problem. He went to the doctor, got an antibiotic and is fine. Mom is getting tested for who knows what and no help in sight yet. Lots of pain and lots of sleeping.

BSD, The Long Walk Home, The Evening Sun, those are close! Wow, was she off, at least she had the actors right. It seems like your Nana and Barb has very similar taste in movies. You’ll have to have her recommend some of her favs. We may not get to watch it till tomorrow tho, so you can critique it for us.

Crap!…We finally get to come downstairs again to catch the game and it looks like they are playing “filler” stuff instead of the game…huffle!…This must mean its been rained out in Denver…grunt!…Some here wish we would get some of that rain that’s been battering the downtown area for days now and not us…snuffle!….So no game. SiberH! If it starts up let me know, she is going to watch some reality foodie show I think…grunt!

Rio, I checked on the internet and it said it is delayed because of rain. I’ll let you know if the game starts. I cannot believe all the rain Coors Field is geting and we are getting zero. Ok, we are 450 miles away from Coors Field.

MollyPop: You mentioned South America. Do the doctors think it is some kind of bacterial infection? Whatever it is we hope your mom is feeling better very soon.

Off to watch that movie Barb and Maggie were mentioning earlier.

Beds!… Someone asked why they don’t just let me get under a bed during a storm….heh!…Well, it’s not that “they” don’t let me, its because those damned bed frames are too low and my, ahem, stocky chest cannot get low enough to get all the way under them…grunt!…It’s the most awful thing, I try and try and sometimes I get stuck…YEEP!…Then all hell breaks loose…sniff!….Luckily, tonight it is not storming….whew!

We are at an art show this weekend. Its just a small show, but it is put on by a friend of ours and we get to see lots of nice people. And so far, so good with the back. Tonight was just set up – the show is in the morning. Hoping for lots and lots of people coming thru the door.
Congratulations on the move Jasper – hope after you ahve settled in we will hear from you more often. We’ve missed you. And we also hope MollyPop’s mom is feeling better.
We are sending out good wishes for perfect health for all the Plunderers, near and far!

Ricky!…..Hey, I figured out who Ricky the Raccoon looks like…heh!…He looks just like that actor Raccoon on the Lottery commercial…snort!….He is the spitting image of the raccoon who is going through someone’s trash and he finds a used lottery ticket. He enters the drawing with the used ticket and wins big!…heh!…My friends brother worked with a guy who won $250,000 doing just that….sniff! …So if you ever wonder if it’s the real thing, it is…heh!

T&G: Your meds may be good, but I saw my last post and wondered to myself, ‘Is that English?”

Our power went out so I sent the last post from my fancy work phone. I forgot that since my phone went haywire while I was traveling it doesn’t post on Chet’s correctly. In fact, everyone’s names look funny, but I can tell who you are by your avatars.

When the power went out Tenzing came over to me and placed his head in my lap. Seems sweet, yet he left the south end of a northbound Tenzing up in the air.

    Good luck with the show!

Project!…Well, someone here tonight is totally pissed off…grunt!…Seems she ran out of a certain color of paper and tried with all her might to use another shade, but it doesn’t look very good now that it is formed and glued down. She is now thinking about scraping the whole damned thing…gruffle!yeep!… At the same time she is trying hard not to sob!sob!sob!….sniff!…I am sure she will find a way to fix it – maybe….scruffle!

Rebeccer!…My south-end is always up unless I feel bad or I am trying to get under a bed for some reason…sniff!

Rio: I think your friend is her own worst critic. I’m sure it’s not as bad as she thinks. Perhaps you could try Tenzing’s approach to offer some comfort or comic relief—if your southend is already up, it requires limited effort on your part.

Rio, That advertisement with the raccoon is a cute one.

Mollypop, I hope they figure out what is wrong with your mom so she can feel better soon.

Best of luck with the show T&G’s mom!

Alas the power went out in our neck of the woods. Heh.
I understand Rebecca. What does that say about me?
    I guess I don’t need every consonant.

Mollypop’s mom I sure hope you are feeling better soon. I am glad that Basil and Sage’s Mom is better.

I was quilting until 8:30 pm and now I need to go to bed so I can get up and go quilting again in the morning. So far 4 chicken hotpads are finished and 2 pillowcases are cut and ready to sew. 6 more hotpads are cut and ready to sew. Heh.

I know Dawson gets one pair of the chicken hot-pads. Wookie told me I had to. One pair has to go to Wookie’s Mom cause she donated the chicken fabric. Maybe I can have a blog drawing for the other pairs. Would anyone enter? If so I will think about it.

They look smashing if I do say so myself.

Maybe I will get a picture tomorrow.

Nighty night everyone. (Microsoft thinks I should say nightly night. snorkle

Home! And straight to bed. Except….
Carpola! Those marauding Canadian goats have eaten my mail to Snowhook.

Wookie and Staff: Wookie, thanks for putting in a word for me and Staff, thanks for listening to Wookie. I get hot pads! WhoooHooo! (I could read Snowhook’s weird message too.)

Jasper: Good move. Now your mom will have more time to spend with you and us.

T&G and B&S: Glad your mom went for the acupuncture and is feeling better.

    Melanie: Brrrr!

    Good night.
