Stop Badgering Us!

“Here’s what I hope is the beginning of a trend,” says Admin.

“I’ll bite,” says Spence.

Me, too. But what?

“This Wisconsin thing,” says Admin, “politicians going into hiding. Imagine if every politician in the country did that?”

“I know you’ve always been a Jeffersonian,” Spence says, “but don’t you think it’s getting extreme?”

“You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”

Uh-oh. The last dude I heard say that is now wearing an orange jumpsuit. Admin wouldn’t look good in one.

Welcome Kelly, Jodie, Prince, Roxie, Zoey, Rocket.

Don’t get me started on this. (Chet: I think there are a few politicans who should be in orange jump suits and it doesn’t matter if they’d look good in them or not.)

    Good morning, Everybody.

Siber-H – no moon dust here last night. We had clouds too.

Staff – a couple of years ago a pair of Coopers Hawks nested in our suburban back yard. Mom watched one of them bounce on a red bud branch until it fell, then broke it into pieces for the nest. The most fun was watching 3 chicks learn to fly and hunt. The chased each other in the air and also played king of the hill on lower branches of white pines. By August they were gone and sadly didn’t return the next spring. But Mom collected a couple of feathers and might make a dream-catcher one day.

Rio – I think the blog has a few flower children members. We make you nuts, don’t we? :-)

I think that we have been too passive passive for too long. And Admin is right. This is just the beginning.

    BStover,
A dream catcher is a circular web often decorated with feathers and sometimes turquoise or other natural items. It protects you from (Mr.Husky is this right?) bad dreams. You hang them in the window.

If you use Google images and put in dream catcher you will get lots of pictures of them.

I had friends that were hippies. I was not a hippy. Not quite old enough. I was that next “type” Mother Earth.

Had fun, had goats, had chickens, had a wood stoves (to cook and heat), learned a great deal.

I don’t know what I am now. My guys think I’m old (a weird old though and don’t say anything in my hearing), but when I don’t count the aches and pains, I feel more like 11. That was a really great time, read a lot, did science experiments, built go-carts, went on month long vacation all over the US, rode horses, rode my bike, explored the Morton Arboretum. Great time.

Hmm, perhaps as we grow older we can become less of some stereotype? That would be cool.

Rio we’ve read Delusion here, I think it was the second or third PA book we read; it was relatively easy to find in paperback in most bookstores, because it is one of his more recent ones. You will like it a lot.

My dad says he wouldn’t describe himself as a hippie, although his hair was a lot longer at that time and he even tried growing a beard once (way too scraggly though — not a prety sight for those who saw it). He says being in Washington in the late 60’s and early 70’s was a pretty exciting place to be. And of course, if he hadn’t been here then, he would never have met, and where would leave me. Wookie

We have a pair of hawks (not sure what kind) that nest in the woods either behind our new house or the side of the house. Our neighbor (who is a BIG bird watcher) says they are a breeding pair. Wish we could find the nest so we could observe the babies when they come. They were out on Super Bowl Sunday so Mom’s family got to look at them with the binoculars. The family are all city dwellers so this was pretty cool for them. We also have a herd of deer that pass by on a path behind the house at the edge of the woods. Mom puts deer corn out there so they can munch a little on their way.

Hello plunderers! It’s my mom’s birthday. She has been playing sock with me this morning to celebrate. February is a big birthday month in our family cause my 2-legged brother’s birthday is 2/14, he turned 24, then my wonderful Grandma Chris, mom’s mom, her birthday is 2/15. Mom is going to Carrabba’s tonight to celebrate with delish food and berry sangria. I wish I could go with her cause I would really like to try that sangria that she raves about, but she is going with her mom and her sister. I’m going to nap while she is gone so that I can play sock with her again when she gets home.

Mom says her job is going great and even tho she has a two-hour to/fro drive each day, she is using the time to think and plan and just chill. She really enjoys silence. She says silence is like air to her, she needs it to live.

The sun is shining here in Grand Rapids and I’ve already seen two kats out my window. I don’t mind when they walk thru my yard cause I like to watch them saunter by. Parades are fun.

Bluecat, that is cute: “flower children” on the blog.

Yes,Staff, that is correct; dreamcatchers protect you from bad dreams. They were all the rage here, but since I deliberately try to remain “out of the loop”, I don’t know if they still are. Mom got bored with what’s trendy long before I came along.
People had them hanging from their rear view mirrors in their cars. White folk here are really good about “borrowing” from Native American culture and hanging it on their rear view mirrors.

Today for the first time my Mom and Sam’s Mom did a mall walk. The high wind gusts did it. They both wanted to get out and walk and this seemed to be the thing to do. They loved it and so will do it more when the weather is too awful to take long walks outside.

  43. Kirby T. Penworthy
    7:03 pm on February 19th, 2011

Hey y’all! When Mom’s little brother was about 7 or 8, he told everyone he wanted to be a hippy when he grew up. He wore a peace medallion and grew his hair as long as Grandpa and Grandma would allow. Then one day he got car sick while their car was stopped for road construction. When he got out of the car to “take care of business,” the flagman came over and said, “Oh, is your little girl sick?” My uncle still hears about that one! Interestingly enough, he grew up to be a (gasp!) Republican!!!

  45. Kirby T. Penworthy
    7:13 pm on February 19th, 2011

Bee: Anne Rivers Siddons is an author that Mom likes. Most of her stories are set in the South. She used to live in Atlanta, so a lot of her books are set there. Then she moved to Charleston, so her newer books are set there. She also has a summer home in Maine, and wrote a book about Maine that Mom really didn’t like, Off Season. Mom hated the ending, although one of the reviews calls it “a powerhouse ending, dazzling in its stealth and ambiguity.” Like most authors, some of her books are better than others!

I was wondering about the title of this posting “Stop Badgering Us!”

First I thought badgers were only in England. That probably comes from a children’s book I read when I was little. Turns out ( according to Wikipedia) that there are badgers called Taxideinae in North America. Okay, the tax thing might fit with politicians be it for or against. I kept on . . . They are a member of the WEASEL family. That definitely could fit. But I kept wondering . . . Their jaws are made so they really lock on to things. That could fit or not with politicians. I kept reading.

I still wasn’t sure how the title fit the posting. So I tried trying to find out where the phrase came from . . .
    Ewwww
blurtit says that it came from “badger baiting” which was just really yucky. You’ll have to do your own research on that one. But YUCK.
But blurtit (in another spot) also said that it’s because the animal is nosy and persistent. Seems to me they are flip flopping there. And that can also be politicians. (snicker)

Then looking on thefreedicitionary I found IT! (I think)
A Badger is a native or resident of Wisconsin. . . I think a couple of someones would have gotten this way before me.

BTW, I would not suggest looking it on the Urban dictionary.

AbbieTheKitty, Rio’s friend here. The camera I use now is called the “Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital Elph.” It is easy to use and the video is excellent! The software to upload photos is really easy to install and use. I recommend it, but it was a bit pricey last summer when I broke down and finally bought it. Prices might be lower now. Rio is soaking in the bathtub and there is no way a fat pug can get out of a slick tub, or even a dry tub. I should keep him there more often.

She is still looking around for that little yapper.

I have been in the tub soaking for at least two days….grump!….Now I am finally out and feeling fine!…wuffle!…No blow-drying for me, I am a wash and wear kind of guy….snort! …What did I miss?…sniff!

    BStover,
It has to be a reference to the political upset in the Badger State. I am not sure what a Jeffersonian is. I personally prefer to believe that he is on the side of the union workers, but that is not because I can interpret the post.
Do you know what a Jeffersonian is?
Jefferson did seem to be for the ‘common man’. ?

Whew, I’m too exhausted to think.

Though I do remember my favorite Sesame Street skit. It was the Alien puppets trying to talk to a phone. Wonderful.

    Well TTFN

It’s 12 degrees and the wind is howling!

    Melanie,
Our warm wave is over. We are supposed to get around 8 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow. Also they are saying the melt down of the last 5 days did nothing to abate the flooding forecast because the water is still in what is left of the snow pack.
In fact, because there is less snow to melt, it will make the melt faster (which is worse). They are now saying there is a 22% chance that this year will be the worst flooding ever. (Up from 20% a few weeks ago)

I think “Jeffersonian” means that government is supposed to safeguard the rights of people and that is its purpose. What is happening in Wisconsin is not Jeffersonian.

    9:54 pm on February 19th, 2011

    Though I was going to sleep . . . I’m still up.

Staff: sorry about the flooding. I wonder if you will see any kangaroos that have floated over for LizF’s.

We are getting 6 inches of snow, starting tomorrow afternoon and ending just after commuting on Monday morning. At least Monday is a government holiday.

BTW, I have never had my own bathroom. It would be nice.

  93. B.Stover
    9:57 pm on February 19th, 2011

And according to the article, Jeffersonian means limited government which is also not happening in Wisconsin.

Well, that was an interesting “read” (snicker to B. Stover) Staff. I would say that through out our history we’ve been going back and forth from one thing to another.

I don’t know how I’m going to tell YSAS he’s living in a cesspool by Jeffersonian standards. Best guess, is he already knows it. The rats there are unbelievable. The ones on four legs I mean. Though I guess the two legged variety is in abundance.

MagPie would have a good time in NYC.

Wait, I forgot. . . MagPie is at the spa for a few days.

Greetings everyone. Its been a very long day. Mama and Daddy had to go to a birthday party for a 3 year old….they do love this little girl and her parents, but the thought of party games for a roomful of screaming 3 years olds, a tableful of snacks for kiddies, and dealing with the family’s various and sundry weird in-laws, out-laws and siblings just about put them over the top.
But they are home now, and Mama was reading the newspaper. She found this article and copied it just for B.Stover. It made her laugh:

Turkey vultures: the first sign of spring

The Audubon Society has reported a variety of recent bird sightings in western Massachusetts. The only sign of spring this week was a few turkey vultures soaring over the lower valley.

The article goes on to list bird count sightings for the week (this is a weekly column with bird counts – can you tell its a small town?)and it mentions the flocks of robins seen here and there. But a VULTURE is the first sign of spring.
Oh dear – this doesn’t bode well to us!

Me too. G’night all. Hope Liz is OK, Haven’t heard from her today.

BTW Fargo is on track to make 3 million sandbags. They want people to turn out 24/7 at the Fargo dome to service 3 automatic bag fillers.

No pay, but it might save your house. :-(

Hey! I know a funny story about Vultures. Funny but true. One time after I adopted a Sharp-shinned Hawk at Hawk Ridge in Duluth MN I got to go behind the scenes to where they captured and banded the birds. They only got a chickadee while I was there, but they told this story about Vultures.

They do not want to lure vultures to the banding station. Vultures have a perfect protection against banders. They will projectile vomit on you. heh. And they eat carrion.
So no banding of Vultures. They get a pass.
    Now really. TO BED.

As for us, we are Great and Mighty Kats! Ok, so maybe Basil is a little hippy – he does like his chicken crunchiesd, but we NEVER fart (at least not in public).
