Stay Off The Ice, Pifas!

“Have we done a dog on the ice story this winter?” Admin says. “Here’s one from Lake Michigan. Pifas is the name – kind of looks like Rufus, another Nova Scotia duck trolling retriever of our acquaintance.”

Welcome Honey (and in answer to your question, the next Chet and Bernie mystery is The Sound and the Furry, coming in Sept.):

I’m glad Pifas is back. There is a picture of another dog that seemed to be involved in the rescue but the story didn’t cover that.

    Good morning all.

Actually the Chicago dog is more red and white. Saw him several times on the Chi news. He had been missing for 9 days when he was rescued from Lake Michigan. One interesting comment – they said on the news that he was required to be chipped and neutered before Animal Control would release him to his owner. What if he was planning to use him for breeding? That seems questionable to us.

Jaye will be here in 5 minutes, then a Service Master guy is coming to clean sofa and chair in the den.

Storm is due at noon. Looks like it will not be as bad as in Kansas and Nebraska. Mix of rain/sleet/snow.

Finished The Secret Keeper yesterday and LOVED it!

Hope Melanie and Zoe and Rick are having a good day. Happy travels to Rose and The Prof.

Rose – flight delays….sigh. But you will have a wonderful time when you get there.
HOH – awww gee, blush, blush, blush
We have seen a number of “dog on ice” stories. Well, to be honest, we have seen the teasers on the news – we can’t bear to watch the stories, just in case it doesn’t come out right.

  18. SnowBella
    11:56 am on February 26th, 2013

Rio: The banquet is in Thursday night. The second round of vet checks are tomorrow. We are going to invite Rose and the Professor to join us for vet checks. Believe it or not, a lot of fans show up at the vet checks. Elim doesn’t understand why anyone would want to see him get poked and prodded, but there you have it.

Moose head stew! No, they won’t be serving such a delicacy at the banquet. Jodi, the person not the puppy, talked last night about having a snowBQ or a regular BBQ while Wose and the professor are here. Moose head stew came up as a culinary option to give Rose the real experience, but we put that idea on the back burner. When I was north last week I had muktuk, which I’ve had before, but I also had whale meat for the first time. It was good.

I got a facebookie from Missoula Public Library where A Catty Librarian works. They have a new Youtube video out and A Catty is in it. Right at the beginning she is the librarian with the short red hair and the grey sweater and she is stamping books.

I am trying to look on the bright side—like having more time to prepare for my very, most special, best friend Wose—but my Two-legged isn’t making it easy. I told her we should get Yummy Chummies as a gift for Wose, but she said she didn’t think Rose would like them. I am so embarrassed. What if Wose doesn’t think I’m a good host. SiberH, maybe you could help my Two-legged see reason and convince her of the importance of having yummy Chummies on paw for one’s guest.

My Four-legged said she wanted to, but didn’t think she could blur Wose and the Professor and all their luggage. Wose promised to obey all the rules, but the Professor looks like a wiggler—just like the Giant.

Attention Please – Calling All Plunderers

We need strong prayers, right now. Melanie is rushing her beloved Franklin to the vet with a suspected case of bloat. Please, please, take a minute and say a prayer for all of them. We are not sure how much more Melanie can take, and we certainly want dear Frank to be ok.

  54. Melanie
    4:08 pm on February 26th, 2013

Thank you Friends, been a very difficult time here for the past week and a half.

Franklin has an infection, most likely the prostrate, that is causing severe pain in his muscles and joints. His hunched over position looked like the beginning of bloat. Our vet, 35 minutes away, was surprised to see me and Frank 20 minutes after she said to come in, but we are not going to talk about that trip. He is now on two different pain meds, an antibiotic and muscle relaxant. I believe he is seeing some of Tenzing’s giraffes.

The map is almost done. I will be finishing it tomorrow. We will be able to call the checkpoints by their correct names.

Zoe and I are okay, just too much sadness in too short of time.

Safe Travels to Rose and the Prof.

  55. Tenzing
    4:16 pm on February 26th, 2013

Franklin: That giraffe is a great dancer, no? See if he’ll teach you some moves. Glad you’re going to be okay, bud. What was scarier—the time you spent with the vet, or the time you spent in the car getting to the vet? My Lady has made similar drives and has said if she sees red and blue lights flashing behind her, they can follower her to the vets and help her carry our family member in the building. Mothers—they are funny creatures. Bless them.

We think maybe AJ should take a team on a practice run to Chicago to pick up Rose and the Prof. Otherwise, the whole race might be over before they get to Alaska.

Melanie called us to ask how she was going to get a very happy, and relaxed Newf out of the car. We suggested pouring. Cant you just see a giant, smiling, black, furry bag of Newf hair, sans bones just sliding jelly-like off the tailgate?

OMD! We missed so much horrible news. Reading it now felt like reading it in current time. So we prayed for Franklin and Melanie and Zoe. Then we read the good news with relief. Honestly, Mom has been super-sick due to the stress she went thru in January and February, so imagine what Melanie’s stress must be doing to her emotionally, mentally, and physically. It has to be so darn hard for her. We wish we could wave a magic wand and make it better, but all we can do is offer our love and support from afar.

And now we are worried about Rose getting to Alaska. What will she do? We aren’t seasoned travelers so we don’t know how easily she can switch flights and make it all the way there. Do youse know if there was much of a layover in Denver so that maybe she can make it there on another flight, and still hookup with the original one there? Worry worry worry….

I hope Stover is right. With the way the airlines operate these days, I figured they might just toss Rose and the Prof. out into the snow and charge them for it.

T&G: You made my heart jump into my mouth for a minute there.

Yeep!…The FTD has smoke coming out of it and we will have to shut it down for the night…grunt!…Rose and the Prof did not make the flight, so plan B is being hatched…snort!…The will not be landing in Anchorage tonight or in the wee hours of the morning either…wheeze!…Hopefully, the storm will be over and done with by the time they get a flight out of Chicago Town…sniff!

Weather!…The weather over DIA is not good right now. Snowing and blowing. You do not want to be in an airplane coming into DIA with weather like this…gurgle!…It can get very ruff!

I’m not sure if air travel has mandatory layovers like our races, but if that is the case, Rose and the Professor are resting at the Chicago checkpoint until tomorrow. If they are lucky like us, they will get fresh straw to lay on and be wrapped in jackets and blankets. AJ also rubs our muscles and feet; I sure hope Wose and the Professor get the same kind of treatment.

What’s that? What? Oh, my mama says I need to offer a translation of what I wrote above. I don’t know why, but here goes. We recieved a transmission from Rose saying they have to stay the night at a hotel. Grump.

Years ago, mom and dad flew to Alaska. They missed their connecting flight in St Louis due to a delay in Houston. The airline put them on another flight. They ended up flying to Anchorage in first class. Sweet!!

Thank Dog Franklin is going to be okay. So scary for Zoe and Melanie.

Thinking of Wose and the Prof in a cozy hotel room, hoping for them a peaceful night’s sleep and smooth travel tomorrow. Interrupted travel – Gah – never fun.

Rio: There I was waiting not so patiently for an incoming transmission from Rose and the next thing I knew, red lights started flashing, a distress signal alarmed and the FTD started smoking. I grabbed the fire put-outer—Belle’s so it was covered in sparkly stickers—and prevented a fire. It did get quite hot and the stickiness on the stickers loosened and well, long story short, the FTD and most of my tail are covered in sparkles. The FTD still works. It’s just sparkly. Do you think Masquers will notice?

We got bumped off a flight in Chi-town a couple of years ago. The airport put us in a 4star hotel with a $50 voucher for the hotel restaurant. Plus we got $400 each and were put in first class the next day. This is why we always volunteer to get bumped off if they have overbooked the flight.

Not sure if a weather delay will give Rose and the Prof all those goodies, but they will be comfortable tonight.

Sniff…I have an announcement to make. My Lady spoke with Wose and the Professor on speaker phone. She said they both sound so nice, but that’s not the announcement. The real announcement is that they are staying in what they called a ‘No Tell Motel’ tonight and are booked on a flight leaving early tomorrow afternoon. Yes, that’s right folks, afternoon! Sniff! They will have a long, long day of travel of them before arriving in Anchorage late, late tomorrow night. Wheeze.

I can report that, according to my Lady, they both sound tired, but in good spirits. There was a fair bit of giggling on the phone. They are plundering on!

G&BB: The Prof had the same questions. Did I mention how nice he sounds on the phone? Anyway, the vet checks are tomorrow which they will miss. There plane will be taking off just as the team is rolling up to race headquarters to be poked and prodded. I don’t mind the poking so much, but I could do without the prodding. The banquet is on Thursday night. They will be able to get some rest before then and my Lady says if they feel up to it, they can do some Anchorage sight seeing before the banquet. The Giant and my mama plan to have then out on Friday to take them on a sled ride! And, then the ceremonial start is on Saturday in Anchorage and the real start the follow day in Willow. Wheeze!!

Whitey-Lance – we know that if you get bubble gum in your fur, rubbing peanut butter on it will take it out. Bet it would work for glitter too. Plus your tail end would be delish!

Rio and the Wookster up top! That does my sled dog heart good.

I figured out the trick to clean my tail—puppies! The little tikes had a grand old time following me—or, more to the point, my tail—around. Now, my tail is sparkle and peanut free. I can’t say the same for the pups, but they’re young and can get away with it.

G&BB: I found out a couple of days ago that a dear friend decided to celebrate her birthday a few days late. It is one of those important birthdays and she picked Sat. night to celebrate with friends. So I have been in a quandary about my being in Willow on Sunday. {{{{sigh}}}} It doesn’t look good but I know Rose and the Prof will have a fabulous time. I am hoping that they will get an Iditarod program signed by a lot of mushers so that it can be put in a future Snowhook auction. Life…twists and turns and surprises–good and bad.
