Sounding Like Me?

“How did it go at the Brewster Book Store?” Spence asks.

“No one threw anything,” says Admin.

“Always a good sign,” says Spence. “Did you do the one-review thing? Pre-school?”

“Nope. It was just a signing. One woman said her husband was starting to sound like Chet.”

A human? Sounding like me?

“What’s he barking about?” Admin says.

“No idea,” says Spence.

“It was actually a fundraiser for this cool Cape Cod organization – the Sampson Fund. They help pay for emergency vet care for people who can’t afford it.”

“Nice idea. I wonder if there are similar organizations in other parts of the country.”

Are they talking about vets? Amy’s my vet: she’s great! Although I don’t like going to her office. Was there something about a biopsy, whatever that might be? I think that’s in To Fetch A Thief.

Hey! Giving to charity- something my mom and dad taught me about. It's a good thing. Maybe we could all send the price of a signed, paw-printed copy of To Fetch a Thief to our local "sampsonfund" to let Spence know how serious we are about getting one of those books! Myself, when I get my book, I'm just gonna squiggle some illegible signature and get the standard poodle next door to paw-print it and whose gonna know?

I looked at the Sampson Fund. They are doing a great job. Though most of the hospitals that work with them are in the Cape area.

More power to those who help animals and their families!!

Chet, no one could sound like you. Except that guy who gives you voice in the audio books.

    B. Stover, I have always heard the first story was correct. It makes a better story, though, you wouldn't want to smoke in bed. Fersur!

I looked up the Great White spotted off Chatham Beach. They are right about the seals. When Patsy and I went camping on the Cape we would walk on the beach and the seals would pop up and watch Patsy. I think they were confused. "What's that black seal thingy doing walking up there?" They would follow us down the beach.

Hi Melanie. I've never seen a seal in person but would love to. Since I'm a word person, I suppose I think that the OED is correct and that "tight" means soundly.

However, I have another theory. "Tight" may be derived from Old English "metethit." (I've had to use modern English symbols. The "th" should really be the OE "eth"–the crossed "d" with a curved stem.) It literally means thick with food but would be translated as "well nourished." That would slightly change the meaning of the expression: Sleep with a full stomach. It seems to make sense in a time when food was not always plentiful.

This is a cause that Spence attended that I support with all my heart! Vet bills can be so expensive these days, but I am glad the quality of vet care and the procedures they can do have advanced so much.

Yes, there are groups all over the country that help with vet bills for people that can't afford it. Husky Rescue here just helped a husky with a $3000 heart surgery. The dog is the beloved pet of a child with disabilities. It is a young dog, and the surgery went well. There is also a national Husky Rescue that helps local rescues with large vet bills.

I always think it is such good news when a dog that needs expensive medical help is featured here in the media. Enough money is always donated by the public.

Mom says that if more guys started to sound like Chet, the world would be a better place.

    B. Stover, that is an awesome think! (snicker)

Also if they go to bed "well nourished" or "thick with food" the sugar levels would rise and they could just conk out and not notice the bed bug bites.

Riö, did you read Rosie Gray's blog on the Rats? That's down where YSAS lives. I sent him a link. He thinks he has to come home to see wildlife . . .

Thanks for the link on bedbugs, Stover. After our discussion here, there was an article on my home page about the plague of bedbugs in this country. I didn't dream about bedbugs, though, I dreamed of the ice…a good dream.

Cute seals, Melanie, but they are safe from me.

There's only one way a human could sound like Chet: If his/her mind went off on a dozen different tangents at once. Something Mom is good at. Maybe that's why she likes his books so much! Even then, though, he/she would only sound like a human interpretation of Chet. Nobody would actually be able to replicate his nuances!

Rio: Thanks for helping out our cause. I knew you'd do the right thing! Well, I'd thought you might do the right thing. Maybe it was more like hoping…. Now that I think about it, I'm surprised as heck you did the right thing! Oh, and both our teams finally won last night! Our teams had high scores, but in the Angels' case, we needed it. Your Rockies went above and beyond — times like that I always yell at the team, "Save some for next time!"

    Ok,

I called the post office and told Penny I was waiting for a package and she said she would call if one came in and then I fell asleep and Mr Staff went and got it. He didn't bring it up and put it on the bed, he hoarded it downstairs.

So I woke up at 11:30 central time sort of bummed that I would have to wait until after the pokes on Monday A.M. before I would get it. I phoned down to him. (This is how we are communicating now that I am walking slowly) Oh, yes, he had it!

So now it is sitting beside me on the quilt workspace/computer desk. It is in a manila (I was sure that had two 'l's) envelope with extra tape on the flap. There is a paw print where the return address would be. It is awfully small, furry sort of Sam sized print so I think he used a stamp, not Chet. It has priority mail stickers front and back and the address is hand printed, all caps, and looks like 'guy' printing if you know what I mean.

Yes I will save the envelope. And no I haven't opened it yet.

I am saving it for when I go in for pokes. Three times a week for at least another month. Less after that, but still way too many. I will not read it on the way there or back (one hour each way) I will read one chapter each poke and I know I will not feel one tiny prick!

sob sob sob as Rio would say, I am so-o happy.

    Thank you Admin!

Now I have to go have lunch and then we are going to the quilt store (Mask firmly in place) and I FEEL GREAT!!!!

I haven’t stopped by for a while, but just finished Thereby Hangs a Tail – the Recorded Books audio version read by Jim Frangione who did a wonderful job. I loved the book except, and it is one big except, the biopsy bit. Why include that? It’s like all those ‘group of women’ books where one of them has cancer. I run a mile from books like that. I just hope the third book settles this immediately (on the first page would be good) and it is nothing. But why bring it up? What I’ve so loved about this series is that I could count on nothing bad happening to Chet. I’m sure all my fellow fans feel the same way.

My bedbug story…when I was little we moved around a lot (until we moved to Alaska when I was 8). I went to 6 different schools in one year. Anyway, I was very shy and quiet–almost mute. One day before I left school, I went up to my teacher and softly said, "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite." I spoke so little that was the only thing I could think of to say…I think I liked the sentence because of the rhyming. My teacher later told mom about it at a P/T conference and mom was so embarrassed since we lived in a trailer and there was a stigma about trailer-court life. My teacher, bless her heart, thought it was very sweet and was so glad that I had talked since I was always quiet.

We had an exciting day today. My mom's friend Leslie is down from New Hampshire (she's a school teacher there and a history buff) so we drove up to Gettysburg to see the museum and battlefield memorial. It was a little hot, although not as bad as last week. We walked around portions of the battlefield, which has about a million markers and plaques. We also saw the place where Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. Did you know he had a dog named Fido, although Fido never made it to the White House because he did not like loud sounds (like cannon blasts or trains), and Lincoln was worried that he would not survive the trip to Washington, DC, so Fido stayed in Springfield, given to another family by Lincoln. My dad also bought a book called Dog Jack, which is a slightly fictionalized account of a real dog, who was a mascot of the 102nd Pennsylvania Regiment Infantry. He was with his regiment from 1861 to 1863 until he became a prisoner of war, captured by the Confederate Army at Salem Church, VA. He was later exchanged for a Confederate Soldier whereupon he returned to be with his regiment. There are pictures of him today in the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Pittsburgh. All in all, I learned a lot of interesting history about my kind on today's trip.

Rio — Love the business cards. And the Rockies last night were truly awesome. Set a major league record for 11 consecutive hits (the entire team batted twice in the 8th inning, possibly another record). Wow! I may ask my mom to make a business card for me, although I don't know if quilt supervisor and secret agent go together well on the same card.

For those who have offered to send money to defray quilting costs here, don't worry about it. My mom says that whatever money you would send should be donated to a local dog rescue society or local Sampson fund equivalent, and that would be much better.

Mr. Husky, I am so happy that you are getting to watch your game. I would be so unhappy if we could not watch our game. The Ballpark is less than 10 miles from our house and the peeps love to go to the games, but not when it is so hot. Couch 1 Ballpark 0! Just hate that those pesky west coast games are so darn late. Lucky mom doesn't have to be at work until 11 tomorrow, so she can stay up late. When she goes to be the TV goes off, and the buttons are too small for me.

Sorry about Belle. She is extremely outspoken.

    Siber H,

About mailing. Could you tape it to a piece of light cardboard? It shouldn't hurt it much to get wrinkled if it is all cotton.

But I worry about some of you who are using unusual mediums.

If I can't iron it without a problem then tape it to the cardboard. Just a light piece like a cereal box or pantyhose insert…Do they even have pantyhose inserts any more? Haven't worn them for 20 years.

    Will that work for you?

If it can be ironed just fold it into an envelope and put that inside a slightly bigger envelope and mail away.

If you are sending pearls etc then tape it and cover the front with some soft material, quilt batting paper towels, whatever and tape that down too. Put it in a manila envelope with bubble wrap in it. Mark it "fragile, hand stamp", and pray. Or use a box.

I have found the framing fabric I want for BlueCat and Maggie's blocks. I am going to put in a tiny 1/4 inch border of framing fabric and then the black and white border. I expect those two to be done tonight.

Rio and I will have to discuss his. Email me with your ideas off list between innings. (If possible) We can figure out the design.

Mr. Wookie you are so generous, I can't wait to see myself on a square.

Belle says to tell Rio that her motto is is you can't take the heat stay out of the doghouse. The pups and I never know when she is going to go of on us. She doesn't usually yell at Holly, since Holly is part Pug too.

Oh, and these are my pups when they were still little.

Well I have all my border fabric cut and the blocks are ready to go except I forgot I had to rinse the ink on the photo's so they are now air drying and I am ready to go in the morning.

I think I will go to bed early again.

I took a percoset because of my aching back and legs and now I am all itchy. I sure hope that doesn't start ruining my fun with percoset.

I have trouble with pain killers because of the kidneys and right now they don't even want me to take Tylenol. Sheesh.

I don't need it much. I guess they let me have some to take home because I didn't ask for it in the hospital very often. They kept trying to give it to me, but my theory on pain is you need a little to tell you when to be careful.

However my back feels much better right now. Much better. teehee

    Night all.

Wookie, we would be pleased to donate money in your honor to Siberian rescue. There is no Golden Rescue in this state or we would donate to them. Goldens don't seem to need to be rescued as much as huskies. Mom says it is because your tribe is saner than my tribe.

Barb, mom thinks you may be right about the Lab. Biddie is taller than Annie and me both, and due to the fact that she is still a little awkward, we are not sure that she has stopped growing. As for the "situation", Biddie, Annie and I all went together to take care of it. No pups for us. Holly and Belle are out of the game too.

Say, staff, mom says if you want to get rid of those Percocet, she will take them off your hands, hehe. You take good care of yourself and that spiffy new kidney.
