Some Comfort

“See this from San Antonio?” says Spence. “The parents of a Marine killed in Afghanistan are adopting the bomb-sniffing dog who ran to their fallen son when he was hit. The dog’s a black lab named Eli and the Marine was Pfc. Colton Rusk. After their son died, Darrell and Kathy Rusk asked if they could have Eli and he was flown to Lackland AFB for the adoption.”

    …with grateful tears in eyes.,,

    Dallas!
We are warmer than Dallas today…and no new snow. Maybe Siber H. was right and we should have the Supper Bowl up at C. Harris’s. The world is upside down.

Just caught up on last night’s posts.
No Rio, you cannot sit on my lap. That would cut off the circulation to my legs.
I think we could be able to keep some of those fancy smancy boxes and go back and forth at will between the hilltop party and the boxes. Then Rio and whoever else wants to can be kept nice and warm and be waited on like kings. And the hardy party people can visit in case of inclement weather. The kats should be able to figure out the logistics.
    Oops late for work.

Molly is concerned that it will be too cold for me, but I promised Mom that I would wear my Snuggie. I also like the boxes so I can be treated like the Princess that I am.

Well! It looks as if we will be spending Saturday night at Minnie’s house and will wander back and forth between the Hilside party and the boxes during the Supper Bowl!

Rio, I am SO glad that you are joining us!

Melanie, it sounds as if you are on top of the half time you-know-what. I am crossing it off my list.

Verizon’s iPhone sold out yesterday in the afternoon. The pre-order lasted only 17 hours. Mom’s phone is shipping, due to arrive on Monday.

We’re surprised that so many people want the iPhone 4 since it came out last June and that’s old in terms of technology. The iPhone 5 is supposed to come out this summer.

Mom first wanted the Droid Bionic, but Motorola had trouble with the phone overheating and so it was then scheduled for release in July. Motorola Mobility’s stock dropped.

Since Mom wants a smartphone for its camera, I suggested that she go with the iPhone since it is already known for having a good camera. Now we’ll see how smart Standard Poodles are. What would a Border Collie advise?

Staff, Even tho I am not a Kat, the shrimp and lobster thingys sound very good to me. I am on board for those. Dallas weather does not look great right now. Good thing we have made accomodations for the softies. I will stay outside.

Just heard that our average snow fall (or maybe it was what we should have to date) is 24 inches. So far we have had 47″, 20″ of which was this week. They are predicting more on Monday. Yeah, more snow!

Thanks Wolfie for taking care of the blimp issue.

grrr…I had a post just about ready to send when my browser decided to close itself. Now to see if I can remember what I said.

    Good dog, Eli, good dog.

Day four of our “weather event” Last night to foreguessers said we might get an inch of snow over night. Yes the inch came and brought 4-8 of his friends with him. Dallas got more snow than we here in FAR north Arlington did overnight, but now a stray band of snow has started up here. All the ice from Tuesday that was looking a little worn out is now covered with a soft white blanket. Apparently the Super Bowl committee does not have as good connections as previously thought. However, it IS finally supposed to get above freezing tomorow. We do not know how you folks that live like this all the time do it. brrrr, sneeze, sniffle

Around here, this kind of snow gives up all the right to goof off. Laundry not done? snow day dishes piling up? snow day Dogs not fed? sno….whoa…nobody needs to goof off that much, however it is hours until dinner time so surely mom will be done goofing off by then.

As if driving was not interesting enough around here, Tuesday’s left over ice patches are now covered with snow, so nobody knows where they are, until….wheee!!! Dad swiped mom’s car and left her with the pick-up of death, so she will not be going anywhere, again. If Biddy and I had not gone walkies, mom would never have left the house this week.

Good morning, y’all! Mom’s going to be busy today, so I won’t be able to post much. In fact, Mom has been busy the last few days — did anyone miss me?

One of the things Mom is doing today is looking for a lens for her new camera that Dad bought her for her birthday. Mom already has two good cameras that use film — she used to work for a newspaper so she had to have one for color film and one for black and white. And she had all sorts of lenses to put on the cameras. So when Dad bought her a new digital camera, he figured she could use all those lenses on it, so he bought the camera alone. But then when Mom tried to put one of her old lenses on her new camera it didn’t fit. Seems you have to have special lenses on digital cameras. Who knew???

So Mom had to use her old camera again to take pictures of Dad’s basketball game. But she has today off of work, so she’s going shopping today so she can use her new camera at tonight’s game, since it’s the last one she’ll be able to go to. Her new camera has a “sports” setting, which focuses automatically and takes lots of pictures at the same time. Mom says she can’t wait to try it out. Now that she’s a year older, it seems she’s taking baby steps away from the “luddite” category.

Oh, and Mom texts — to anyone who texts her first!

I love the sports setting on the cameras. I used that to get pictures of OTAS and F for their engagement photos. He is not fond of having his picture taken. So I just took lots and lots and caught him off guard.

I love my two lenses on my digital. I would also like a macro lens and a really really long telephoto. Not happening anytime soon!

The state of emergency remains in NM. Tens of thousands are without heat. The state has basically shut down to save gas. The shopping malls and casinos are staying open, bless their greedy little hearts.
We still have heat which almost isn’t fair since a Husky lives here. A little town just fifteen miles from us is totally without natural gas..

Herb Kats, I do not have fluffy fir like you guys, and yet I nearly spit fur balls also.

We are out of sorts here. Some obnoxious members of the national media are saying that Dallas should never have another Super Bowl. I personally do not think we can take credit for the weather. They are saying that we don’t have the proper equipment to handle the ice and snow, yet every available snow plow in the state is here. It does not make financial sense for cities to buy a lot of equipment that won’t even be used one a year in most cases. It has been quite a novelty to us natives to see the plows on the roads. Mom does not remember ever seeing any and she has lived here her entire life.

  58. Siber-H

Dawson, some people are using electric heaters, which are all sold out in this state, and some people can use wood stoves or fireplaces. Shelters are open all over the state.
Some good news is that an animal shelter in the northern part of the state is without heat and water, but they found temporary foster homes for 100 animals within 4 hours.
You are right when you say that a lot of people here don’t prepare for this possibility.

Mom is prepared…she has cold weather sleeping bags and both mom and dad have down parkas. Mom wears hers to the dog park…she looks like she is on Mt. Everest going for the summit instead of just another day at the dog park.

Hey Double Dawson! What do you Canadians mean by holding up the roof rakes at the border?

Not a roof rake in the area and ours broke during the last snow storm. We ordered one and it was to come in today. Hrumph.

We are told that they are being held up at the border. That is so weird. Of course, it could be the USA holding them up. Maybe we think they are weapons. I could see that. Sure. A bunch of maundering beavers with roof rakes attacking the house. It could happen.

Loved the card, and it did remind us a little bit of a certain pup we know and love.

Melanie, we also have not heard of a roof rake. Is it soemthing for the snow?

Mr.Rio, I’m glad you finally told us how the doctor visit went. It probably won’t take long for the results of the blood tests to come back.
A doctor just this week told my dad that some peoples’ bodies can handle salt better than others. Some people just process the salt on through and others don’t.

Melanie – We should have had the weather that you got instead. Lots of snow, right here on the ski slopes!

Macy – We don’t want your weather – it’s cold with not enough snow.

Olivia!….Stover to tell you the truth, we here did not like Olivia from the get-go. Which was unfortunate because we loved all the other characters. Now we have been away from the story so long there is no way to catch up even if we wanted to. We don’t care what happens to Olivia. So what’s the point? …heh! …Got to care about the main characters. Take notice you writers out there!…gruffle!sneeze!

SiberH!…Thank you for the post about Salt….sniff!…She is probably one of those people who cannot handle salt (all of a sudden!). So she is actually excited in a weird way to find new things to eat or new ways to cook. The problem is time and energy after work, but she will somehow have to figure out how to organize that….snort! …If anyone has any suggestions I can give her about cooking this way with low sodium that would be great!…heh!

My dad is suppose to watch his salt intake so here is what we know…that lite salt is a big no no, the doctor said. I didn’t spell lite wrong…that is the way the company spells it.
The doctor recommended those Mrs. Dash seasonings. They don’t have any salt in them and there are many varieties to choose from.

Hi Rio – Sorry about those bad Kats. Mama does try to keep them away from the computer but they are just sneaky.
Please tell your friend her knee thing may or not be a salt issue, but blood will tell as they say. But almost all people in this country use too much salt. Mama wanted to cut down on everyone’s salt here, and all she did was start cooking more from scratch. Packaged foods are all loaded with salt. So she cooks fresh veggies, and real potatoes and she uses lots of herbs and spices for flavor. She is right about beng excited about thinking of new ways to cook. Tell her to read read read about low salt cooking, and have fun experimenting!

The potassium shaker is in the spice/baking aisle in the supermarket and is called Nu-Salt.

Again I say wait until you see some test results. In the meantime, if the pain is from swelling, as I have said before, RICE – Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Rio, Dad likes that Mrs. Dash stuff. Mom likes it too.
Most of us eat way too much salt. There is no need for all these companies to put so much salt in our food.
Your friend’s problem may not be salt. It could be thyroid. If that is the case, modern medicine is very good at fixing thyroid problems.

Roof Rakes! Up where it snows several feet in a season the accumulated weight of all that snow is huge so some people shovel their roofs. Instead of climbing up on top and risking life and limb there is a roof rake which is just a series of poles screwed together until they are long enough to reach the roof and then the “rake” which is just a rectangle about 8 inches tall and 2 feet long. your put that part at the end of all the poles and reach up to the roof and haul the outermost edge of the snow down. It takes a tremendous amount of weight off the roof and also gives any melted snow a place to run off so ice dams can’t form. If you look at the picture of Melanie’s house you can see where she has raked the snow off all the edges.

Ah, I see it Dawson, interesting, especially since it is a two-story house. With these flat roofed houses here, we have to shovel the snow off, but that is only maybe every 15 years.

    Dear Rio,
I have to eat low salt. If your friend has to do it tell her slow and easy does it. Start slowly and don’t try to do it all at once. After a while she will be able to like the taste of things with very little salt. It is an acquired taste, but it can be done.

For me the hardest thing is no pickles or olives. I LOVE olives.
Also learn to read the containers for sodium content. You will be totally amazed at how much sodium is in a can of beans or even a package of frozen vegetables. You can find them with 15 milligrams of sodium or with 600. Read read read the labels. Portion size and sodium content. Bleh.

And give yourself permission to have a hotdog when you go to the ballpark. Just no popcorn.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaa

Yes I miss it. Ask Dawson. I have been a bore on the subject this fall/winter. It is a result of my blood pressure problems that I had to go low salt.

Thyroid is much easier. I have had that for many years. Take a pill and you are fine! The pills are even cheap!

    good luck

Cowboy Stadium could have used a colossal roof rake today. A bunch of ice/snow slid off and injured 7 people. And the hits just keep on coming…

A few years ago, mom and dad went “skiing” and awoke one morning to a strange sound. They went out to find men shoveling the roof of the condo. Not something you see in Texas for sure. (it was in Durango, CO)

Rio ” We know someone who is married to her cousin”. Is that legal in CO?
