Solstice

“Today,” Bernie says, “is the shortest day of the year.”

I watch Bernie carefully. Where is he going with this?

“We can either throw in the towel or run around extra-fast.”

Towel? I’ve had some trouble with towels in the past – hard to find a place for the laundry basket that’s out of my reach – so maybe running around extra-fast is the way to go.

“Chet! Easy, big guy.”

Welcome Blackie and Chuy.

Good morning all. Barb is working today, does shortest day make her work day shorter? She is hoping so.

G & B, Barb got a package from her DIL with a bunch of pics in it. Later she told Barb that she had included Barb’s earrings that she had left at their house. Earrings were long gone, so now we always check envelopes twice!

We are still chuckling that last night we said “Happy tails till we meet again” as our sign off. Next post was from Trigger. Did anyone else think that was really funny?

Me? I’m throwing in the towel.
Morning Barb: I’ll have to go read last night’s posts, but yeh, that is funny.
I’m off to work as well. It’s so warm I will walk.

Everyone was up late last night. Except me. After the Howl my eyes began closing. Didn’t even make it through the end of the movie.

Barb, We LOVED your clever sign-off last night and thank you for pointing out that Trigger posted immediately after. That was synchronicity!

This I know how to share: Steamed Christmas Pudding recipe

    1/2 C flour
    1/2 C sugar
    1/2 C butter
    1/2 C milk (room temp)
    4 eggs, well beaten
1 C Molasses (Brer Rabbit orange label)
    1 tsp soda

Beat flour, sugar and butter together, well. Add eggs and milk. Put molasses in a 2 cup measuring cup. Mix the soda into the molasses. Stir well. It will double in size and become lighter. Pour into 9″ cake pan and steam over hot water for 1 and 1/2 hours. Serve with hard sauce.

This was a secret family recipe, until it popped up all over the internet. The older generation wasn’t amused.

    Hello all!

Rio: To answer your question from last night, it is good to spend time with my family. As far as hot yoga, last night was my second time doing it and I survived. I have discovered a couple of things, I’v suspected about myself for quite some time: I have no coordination, and, thanks to the bolts in my back, there are just some ways my body doesn’t bend any more.

AJ said that we received about 2.5 feet of snow yesterday. He takes it very personally anytime it snows like that. He has to clear the driveway which can take a long time.

Whew, I’m glad MollyPop’s Mom figured this out. I’ve been on the run all morning.

Gus and BooBear, I’m so sorry that I did not just say what was in the package, I wanted it to be a surprise and also it was after 9 pm after I got it all done. As we all know, my brain quits about 11 am.

I would give you mine, but I missed counted! (What did I say about my brain?) I will be reordering in January and so will get you another one!

One half of the Holiday grocery shopping done. I did look at Prime Rib (way too much meat) and at Matzo meal (wheat). we were thinking of scallops for Christmas evening, but try $17 a pound and YSAS eats more than a pound himself! So at this point, we’re going to do a Surf and Turf for two. Zoe and I will split the one and YSAS will have the other. Crab Newburg on Boxing Day (OTAS and F).

The main reason I went out was to get the Gluten free baking . . .
    carrot cake
    pecan pie
    sandwich bread
    lots and lots of cookies
    fudge
    and banana bread!

B.Stover: I remember getting fruit from my Grandparents that lived in FL. Always delicious.

Barb, I thought the Barb and Trigger postings were funny.
Sam, Love the stuffed Trigger joke. I’ll tell it to my dad.

Fellow Sibers? Did I read that correctly? Is your mom wearing the medal? There is a little disagreement going in our house over who should wear the medal.

Rio, our weatherman said the snow would miss you. He was wrong, as usual…sob, sob, sob. Rio is getting my snow. I am still waiting.

Now Siber-H, you need to share your snow. Don’t you have some on the ground?

Bella, I don’t move in some ways anymore and I DON’T have bolts in my back.

Got the low down on Dan. So far so good! X-ray shows the position of the leg pieces are okay so far. He is healing GREAT. At least one more month in Rehab. NO weight on leg because of nasty things that can happen that I don’t even want to picture.

Speaking of the CL let us tell you about the wonderful “Christmas bonus” we got this year.
Keep in mind that it has been insane thus past year with numerous projects and Mama has gotten CLL in the newspaper 5 or 6 times. We had the big expansion, we had an open house that got many new members, we are covering for CL 3 days a week while she babysits her )&(:&!? grandkid, we have been configuring the new operating system for the computer etc.

So in deep gratitude – CL gave us each a letter urging us to continue working hard and making suggestions about what we can do to make the business grow.

Well, in her defense – it was printed on vellum, and in a lovely, script font.

  54. Tupper and Gilly
    1:45 pm on December 22nd, 2011

    Thank you for your questions.
Mama is well – except for a mild head cold.

The project that she is working on? Well , the final stages of holiday prep are kind of front and center. After that, her fingers are itching to get back to clay. She has ideas floating in her head that need to come out her fingertips.

And today’s big project – grocery shopping….yay!! She hasn’t been grocery shopping for 3 whole weeks. Getting pretty hard to make dinner with no ingredients. And the Christmas gang all want escargot, so garlic is on the list.

Song!….Beaus been humming this song all morning long….snort!

    Walkin’ in a Doggie Wonderland

Dog tags ring, are you listenin’?
In the lane, snow is glistenin’.
It’s yellow, NOT white, I’ve been there tonight,
    Marking up my winter wonderland.

Smell that tree? That’s my fragrance.
    It’s a sign for wandering vagrants;
    “Avoid where I pee, it’s MY pro-per-ty!
Marked up as my winter wonderland.”

In the meadow dad will build a snowman,
    Following the classical design.
Then I’ll lift my leg and let it go, man,
So all the world will know that it’s
    Mine-mine-mine!

Straight from me to the fence post,
    Flows my natural incense boast;
“Stay off my turf, this small piece of earth,
I marked it as my winter wonderland.”

    Carpola! Snigglefritz!

Two items came in the mail. Both had problems. Snigglefritz.

First one gave me a complete refund.

Second one is not being helpful. I think I called during their Christmas Party. Sure took them long enough to get me. Hate “on hold” music. I hummed Beau’s song.
    They can’t replace it.
Their warehouse is closed for the season.
Don’t know if they have the instructions.
Sending me a “tag” for a return.

CARPOLA! Now what do I give this kid?

    Alice you look great.

    I’m not saying we’re exhausted here, but . .

Patsy takes Tramadol for pain and Fosamax to help keep her bones hard. Both are part of what we do for her cancer.

    Greetings All!

You guys have been making me laugh out loud today!

Rio: I really enjoyed the cards, and your song!

BlueCat: The card looks very pretty, but I did not get any animation. Should I?

Wolifie: I tasted your toffee today. WOOOOHOOO, it sure is yummy!!! Thank you once again.

Miss Macy and Mom: I liked your picture! Thank you for your card!

T&G: Bears were on my doorstep today. OMG, they are just gorgeous!! Even the Prof was extremely impressed with the workmanship. The Nothern lights bear now resides on a place of honor, a table that I have always loved since I was a little girl. It belonged to my grandmother, and my father gave to me when she died. The small bear will be placed in my cubicle at my busy place so I can be reminded of you all every day. And thank you for the beautiful Christmas present. Check in the mail tomorrow.

SiberH: You know how much I love the snow. Why can’t I have some???

Now I’m going to get a little teary here…The Plunderers are a very special group, and I’m very grateful for your friendship. It is the best Christmas gift I could receive…In fact it is the best gift because your friendship keeps giving all year long.

Hugs, tummies, and scritches to you all!

Hi, guys. The link I tried to post this morning was of a winter scene that changed from fuzzy to clear when a mouse was moved over it and it had an inspirational message. Maybe that’s what Barb saw, as well.

I forwarded the email I got to Molly’s Mom, who posted the link. The picture is beautiful; perhaps y’all can be inspired by it. It’s not the original.

I sent Macy an email and told her I can clean cat boxes and drive in snow, but I can’t do an effing thing techie. No more posts from this Kat.

By the way, pondering here – Christmas and Solstice and Festival of Lights, all in the same week – methinks we are TOTALLY CONNECTED.

    Have a good evening, Everybody.

Maybe what Bluecat is talking about is the same thing that I saw earlier this week on line. I don’t remember whether it came from this blog or in an email from someone else. If you go to google search and type in “Let it snow”, flakes start falling across your screen. After a few minutes your screen fogs up like a window; you clear it by dragging your mouse around. You can draw or write on the scree like we used to as kids when the windows fogged.

In the link that Bluecat posted, once you put the mouse on the picture, it becomes night, lights go on in the house windows and smoke comes from the chimney, there is a snowman in the foreground and two raindeer in the distance eating; it starts snowing and the large pinetree has lights on it. There are also stars twinkling in the sky.

B: We like your reference earlier to the Winter Solstice as Time Standing Still. An intriguing concept.

An article in USA Today notes it has also been called The Great Stillness. It goes on to say: “most of us know that the days in the Northern Hemisphere begin growing longer after the Winter Solstice. but few people notice something unusual…sunrise does not occur earlier until well after the solstice. That is, until well into January, the days grow longer because sunset is a little later each day, while sunrise might actually occur later, or hold at the same time for several days. Exactly what happens depends on your latitude, or how far north you are”

Dawson once posted the number of seconds the light begins to increase each day as the sun returns to the north.

Wölfie: Please tell your mom that the toffee has made it to the other side of the country! It’s certainly not going to last long. YSAS arrives tomorrow.

I was inspired by the “Time Stand Still” time. Right now instead of breathing they are all snoring.

Listening to the radio and the local TV, everyone has this dognabbit cold. Never seems to end. I’m blaming this weather. Damp and cold. Not cold enough to snow, just mud. It is mud season here and we don’t usually get that until Spring.

I’ve been wrapping gifts. Came down to say goodnight and give Patsy her yogurt and water and pills. Then it’s Puppy Pee and Poo Parade.

I’m hoping that YSAS can figure out what’s wrong with the upstairs computer.

Mom says that any plain cracker made without any kind of fat (I.e., common crackers) ground up finely in a food processor would probably work just fine in lieu of matzo meal.
Dawson, if we did try to mail you some matzo meal, how would Canadian customs agents react to that? Are they worse than MG’s?
Mom also says that while she prefers Yukon Gold potatoes, yellow potatoes like the ones you mentioned should work just fine too. Actually even plain ole Russet potatoes can work, although they have a propensity to turn gray fairly easily, which is why mom prefers Yukon Gold instead. Wookie

Wookie: Since 9/11 US customs has not looked kindly on homemade foodstuffs coming across the border, and white powdery substances. I brought some salt in my carry on baggage a year ago and it was subjected to all kinds of tests. I’m not sure if the standards are as stringent with Canadian customs. But…one of my friends can bring me some from Dawson Creek. It’s a city and surely they have it there! Thanks for thinking of me.
