So Close To Steak Tips

So there we were at the Dry Gulch, me, Bernie and Ray. Colonel Bob was supposed to meet us but where was he? Also Ray was wearing a wire. How come? Those were two problems. There were probably more but I don’t go past two. Once we were at a party down at the college – love college kids! the fun they have! who wouldn’t want to go to college and stay forever? – and this math professor had too much to drink. All of a sudden he started crying. “What if nothing important is quantifiable?” he said. Bernie patted him on the back and called a cab.

But right now he was putting his finger across his lips, human sign language for zip it. Then he reached for a cocktail napkin, wrote something on it and held it so Ray could see. Ray nodded, a little nod. He was real scared. I could smell it. I could also smell steak tips just about done in the kitchen, but this probably wasn’t the time.

Now we do have the written note that Chet can't report on. Blast. If Ray is that scared I think Col. Bob's life has been threatened and Astrid's also.

Chet: Nothing important is quantifiable but we won't tell the mathematicians that. It would make them so unhappy.

Hey, y'all! Good Monday morning to you, too! I had a great weekend, I hope everyone else did, too. My Hawkeyes won, because I was wearing my special collar for the whole game this time! And, more importantly, I got to go to Dad's game!!! His team won by lots and lots of points — like Chet says, I know it was more than two! And Mom brought some treats to give me, only she didn't understand that outside treats are meant to be hidden, not eaten! So I kept burying my treats under the pine straw — oh, lovely pine straw! We don't have any in our yard, so I was having lots of fun digging in the pine straw! Mom kept uncovering my treats to try to get me to eat them. Mom, Mom, Mom, will you never learn? But the best part was the some of the boys at the school miss their dogs at home (it's a boarding school, and Mom says that means they live at school instead of home), so they were giving me lots of pats. Boy, were they good patters!

Oh, and come on Rangers — you can do it!!!

Here is a youtube film of starlings flocking in Gretna Green, Scotland. Apparently they come from Scandinavia and Russia to join the UK starlings. The Brits call this "murmurations." I've seen it around here but never with so many birds.

Chet: If it's more than two, it's not important. Unless there's more than two steak tips. Then it's important.

B.Stover: Right on about the important stuff. Hope the shower helped with PugKisses.

Kirby: Good job! You never know when you're out if there will be treats. If you hide them, you know you'll be taken care of later.

Barb & MagPie: A double tease. Steak tips and the case.

Riö: How are you going to know if the blog is fixed if you don't try it?

Macy: It sounded like a GREAT party last night. Sorry we missed it. Maybe Mr. Wigglebutt could blur some leftovers over here. Though with the crowd you had there probably aren't any.

I'm enjoying Storm Front though I must say if the TV series had followed the book, it would have been on cable and lasted longer than one year.

B.Stover: that Murmuration of Starlings was FANTASTIC.

It reminded me of the migration of Red Winged Blackbirds in VA.

When we first moved down there from IL in 1969, the Blackbird flock was as large as what was on that video. It went for miles. Unfortunately, with the decrease of their wetland habitat it decreased after that. Now they are just remnants of the huge flock. I wonder if there is a word for a flock of red winged BBs?

Enjoyed the clip on the starlings, but it kept starting and stopping every few seconds, at least for us.

Melanie, we are enjoying Storm Front too, even tho it is a little out there for Barb. The talking skull, and Bianca were both pretty wild, but still entertaining.

We are hoping that the blog is fixed and we are hoping that the Rangers win tonight. Here is a quote from Emily Dickinson on hope.

Hope is the thing with feathers,

    That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

    And never stops at all.

  35. Riö - The Evil

  36. B.Stover
    12:22 pm on November 1st, 2010

And never stops at all. There's the rub. Does it mean that we always have hope (but without words or focus), or that the "bird" doesn't stay because he (or hope) is indifferent to us?

Thanks!….Now I know why I was thinking Bernie was at some Western PI Conference….grunt!….Staff planted that seed with her post….snort!… It might not be in the book at all. Just goes to show the power of suggestion. …heh!

  43. B.Stover
    1:07 pm on November 1st, 2010

It seems to me that "perches" has a connotation of precariousness, as does "feather" (derived from Latin petere meaning to seek). I never consider many of Dickinson's poems as optimistic but that's just my interpretation.

  44. B.Stover
    1:13 pm on November 1st, 2010

Bernie was at that conference. Here's the post from Octo. 14:

    Where’s Claude?

“Here’s something interesting, Chet,” Bernie says. “A woman named Mary Paquin, driving a Honda on Cape Cod, hit a guy in a Toyota, sending both drivers to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Also she was charged with driving under the influence, driving to endanger, etc. etc. Nothing unusual so far. The unusual part is that her golden retriever Claude jumped out of the wreck and has been spotted in several Cape towns since, seemingly headed west. Searchers think Claude may be headed back to where he used to live for most of his life, which was Plymouth Mass.” He looks up. “A search like that would be right up our alley, big guy, if we weren’t so busy with the Astrid case. To say nothing of the Great Western Private Eye Convention.”

The Great Western Private Eye Convention? Whoa! Isn’t that in book four? We’re getting way ahead of ourselves, which I’ve seen our shadows do, but don’t really understand.

  45. Siber-H
    1:24 pm on November 1st, 2010

    I hope Claude is okay.

  46. Barb & Maggie
    1:28 pm on November 1st, 2010

Bee, I am sure you interpretation is more accurate than ours, but Barb thought it was uplifting. I think anything with feathers sounds interesting!

Rio, Watch out, Emily may come back from the grave and pull your little Pug tail!

  47. B.Stover
    1:44 pm on November 1st, 2010

Another interesting thing about the word "feather" is that it can be traced back to Sanskrit patati which means both flies and falls. I suppose that's logical since a feather can do both. There is no right or wrong answer regarding poetry which is what makes it so much fun.

Now nothing for us baseball Kats until late February. Mr Staff used to take Staff to Spring training in Florida. (((Sigh)))

    Those were the days.

The only problem I have now is that Mr Staff likes to watch the post game show. It is going to be 2 whole hours. I like to just watch the games. I don't like to rehash them.

Wow! Wow! Wow!….The Giants win the World Series! They are the Best of the Best (this year)!….snort!… No one can deny the talent they have on their team…WOOO!WEEEE!… There for a minute I thought they would let Lincecum go to the very end, but that Black Beard had to get in there…grunt! ….I feel bad for the Rangers, I really do. We know very well how it feels to lose the World Series and it is piercingly heart breaking!

Sad!…Last of the 2010 baseball season….sob!…Now we have to suffer all winter long without it …sigh!sob!sigh!

uh, oh, groan, but congratulations to the Rangers for winning the pennant and making it to the WS.

Congratulations to the Giants for winning. They have some fantastic pitchers.

I could not have handled it if I had been #100 tonight.

Well!… It’s been a great baseball season and I want to thank all of you for allowing me to enjoy it here with you guys on this here blog. Special thanks to Peter and Spencer, although I know they are big fans of the game, I just hope they have enjoyed this season rehashed through the voice of another mighty baseball fan who happens to be a stout Pug….snort!… I think some of you have actually become baseball fans for the first time or once again because of it all. At least I hope so.

Re-Hash!….Mr. Staff, we are with you and will re-hash till we have to go to bed…heh!…WOOOOOO!…What a great year! What a great Series!…whooowheee!

I agree too, while my heart was with the Rangers, the Giants were just too terrific. Congratulations to them for a great series. And thanks to my good friend Rio for rekindling passion for baseball with my dad, where it had laid dormant for many years. Growing up, baseball was far and away his greatest sports passion (shudder, he actually liked the Yankees for a while, but gave way to the Dodgers, especially during the Koufax era), but spending so much time in the Washington DC area without a baseball team (until recently) just sort of dampened it. We'll now be counting the days to spring training and the start of the 2011 season here in Chevy Chase. Wookie

    Goodnight all,

It was a fun series. If we go back and see the predictions, did anyone come close to being right? I remember Admin. had a few problems with the National league teams vs the American League teams and had to change his vote, but I don't remember what it was.

    Thanks for the baseball company.

Wouldn't it be fun to go to a game together sometime?

Maybe the winner of the proposed title search could go to a game with Spence instead of having him out to dinner in our home town. (population 51)(no restaurant at all) We do have a grain elevator though. Oh, and a post office.

I was hoping I could incognito as #100. I will sacrifice being kissed by a pug now that the Giants won.
