“Looks like Snowhook Kennel wants to post something about the Plunderers on their site,” Spence says. “Origin of, what brought them together, where the name came from, the whole story.”

“Are we capable of summing up all that?” says Admin.

“I would say not,” says Spence. “But maybe the Plunderers themselves, or anyone else out there today, might want to chip in a word or two on the subject.”

“Sounds like an idea,” says Admin. “A lazy idea on our part, but sometimes that’s the best kind.”

Laziness: a big subject. Let’s get to it some other time.

Looks as though I might be first to say Good Morning Everyone. I haven’t said much lately because I’m not very well versed on a lot of the topics being discussed so I just enjoy reading and thinking about all of you. Today is the first anniversary of my rescue from the shelter, and I must say it’s been a great year. We’re so tired of the cold and snow (actually it’s snowing right now) that we’re going to jump in the car on Monday and head south. We don’t know where or how far we’ll go, but we hope to stay long enough that spring will have arrived in these parts by the time we get back.

I failed to mention the fact that we mailed our check to Snowhook and want to encourage the rest of you to do likewise. We might have a winner next year.

    Good Morning, everyone.

    Happy rebirthday, Mr. Tibbs!

Just for kicks, I reread last years postings of the Iditarod. Back then, I was in Lurk Mode. I am amazed because just about everyone is still actively posting. The exception is somebody by the name of Georgette, who I don’t remember, but she thought that the Iditarod is a cruel race for dogs. “Nobody asked the dogs whether or not they want to run 1100 miles. That was a human decision.” I wonder what she would say if she knew that we are now Official Sponsors? Heh!

Mr.Tibbs!…..So nice to hear from you!…snort!….How much fun to just jump in your car and drive South to the warm air….sniff!… Just don’t drive to Kentucky, I hear they are having frightful weather there….sneeze!

Allergies!….Our allergies are K-I-L-L-I-N-G us these days….sniff!….She’s even debating the idea of us moving over and staying with her mother for awhile to see if we feel any better by getting away from the sick-a-mores….grunt!….That would mean no Internet for me during the evening hours….grump!…I’m not sure I like this idea at all….sneeze!cough!hack!gag!spit!sneeze! …wheeze!

Well, Chet brought us together. There is an entire post that quotes me (and I am blushing–no joke–because it has my name in the title) about the name “Plunderers.” It’s too long; I’ll make it shorter and post it today but I’d like to know what everyone else wants to do with that.

Hi Tyb. I’ve been wondering where you were. Happy anniversary.

    Good morning all.

Yes, Chet brought us together, that and a love of dogs and animals and reading and all things that are Good.

(Which reminds me. Bee, I worry about you being lonely, seeing as you don’t have any critters. I was thinking that you might want to get a companion dog or two. Something well suited to an Easy Chair. How about a Jack Russell terrier puppy and/or a Border Collie puppy?)

Okay, that was my joke of the day.

On a more serious note, I emailed Rebecca last night (I wanted her to know that I do have a last name, even though my butt doesn’t wiggle so much these days) and told her that this has been a difficult year for so many of us. And that it has been a joy and a blessing to support Snowhook. Like us, Snowhook plunders on, and the bond of our little community makes life a little more bearable.

Wolfie, You are sooo funny. But I agree, Bee should have a critter or two. Maybe a nice sedate senior dog or cat from a rescue. Something small and quiet.

Barb posted that b-d greeting on a relatives’s FB page this a.m. Hippo birdie, etc. Her son saw it and called her and said
“What’s a hippo birdie?”. He thought it had someting to do with the eagle site. Hee.

    Hi TYB. Happy travels.

We will leave the historical writing to Bee, and a few of you others, who are better at that sort of thing than we are.

And yes, Bee, I loved what you wrote about the Plunderers. Can’t wait to read your revision.

Gotta go now before Rio wakes up!

PS Melanie, I don’t understand why you won’t be able to see the play? Can’t you see if there are any cancellations or something? This just doesn’t seem right?

B.Stover: no reason to blush, it was an excellent idea then and an excellent idea now.

To tell you the truth, I’m not sure when I started commenting. Been fun even through the tough spots.

We should talk about the quilt, the missions, and the parties.

Also how we discovered Snowhook last year when Whitey-Lance went missing. And waiting on tenderpaws until he was found.

Also the support we’ve given each other. Yup, we are wonderful.

It is fun to think about jumping in the car and heading south. My dad says that after working 7 days a week for fifteen years since his retirement, it’s time to do something before he has to hire someone to push his wheel chair while he does it. I agree as long as he will take me along. He says he won’t go any where that I can’t go. Am I spoiled or what? Funny you should warn us about Kentucky. Hope the whether settles down before the middle of May; we’re supposed to go there then.

I like your suggestion about discussing the quilt, the missions and the parties. I’ve heard about the quilt, but know no details. I don’t know a lot about the missions and the parties either.

Wölfie, It’s the timing, the bus leaves NYC before the play starts. So this way instead of seeing a very good (depressing) play, YSAS and I get to PLAY!

There are many things I want to see. Some of them include, his neighborhood and the garden walkway they’ve made on the old railroad bridge.

Notice I don’t want to see his apartment. FOUR FLOORS of stairs.

Wolfie: Georgette wrote something similar on Chet’s Appreciation page on Facebook about this year’s Iditarod. She said that she was afraid that everyone was angry with her for posting it. I replied that no one would be angry with her for stating her opinion. My background in horse racing gives me an understanding of the “humanity,” for lack of a better term, of the Iditarod race. It’s a challenge, a quest, and a test of endurance. I think that the dogs feel the same way as the humans do…perhaps similar to climbing Mt. Everest because it’s there.

Thank the Great Kat they are sleeping it off today and leaving us alone.
We vote for shipping them to B.Stover, in a crate with a grande Starbucks to share on the trip. Trust us – she won’t be lonely when they get there!

“Yup, we are wonderful!” Melanie, you’re making me laugh. You were among the first to post on Chet’s blog, as was CHarris, Liz and myself.

I’ve read about the garden walkway on the railroad bridge. Pictures would be nice.

Oops – good morning everyone – didn’t know we were “live” so to speak.
We are so happy to be part of Snowhook. We weren’t around last year when Whitey-Lance went AWOL, but we loved every minute of the coverage this year. (we admit, we were rooting for John Baker for our own reasons, but we loved supporting and following Snowhook.
Being newbies here, we kind of felt like the Plunderers took on Snowhook cuz they seem like our kind of folks. The way they care for their dogs, the connection they obviously have with them – that is all very Plunderesque. We know that it was thru Rio and Siber that we all got “Snow-hooked” on this team and we are grateful for that.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TYB! All of us who got adopted from Rescues etc have all won the Puppy Lottery!

Quilt: It was Rio’s idea and we all made squares. It arrived at Spence’s on September 15 when we had a “Special Edition” post to let us know. Posts on September 16, 17 and 18 were about the quilt. On September 21, Spence posted a picture of the quilt and a picture of him standing by the quilt.

Someone who is more technologically adept than I am could let Rebecca know how to find those posts, or could send them to her???

Rio: Thanks for the picture. I had forgotten how wonderful the quilt is.

Sad: Bryan Stow, a paramedic, is still in the hospital with brain damage in a coma. Giants are donating $10,000 for his medical expenses. They are dedicating the opening game to him and will have a moment of silence. When the Dodgers come here to play they are going to have extra security. I hope nothing happens as you know there are some crazy people out there.

    Good Morning!

Snowhook & the Plunders! I for one, being new would LOVE to hear the story of Chet and the Plunders. We were going through the archives the other day and found some of the earliest photos of Chet’s Friends. Rio! You are the very first one! I have since heard tales of you being our Fearless Leader and the one who brought this group together. Is this true?

Wolfie & B: Yes, I’ve seen Georgette’s posts on CAS during the Iditarod. I guess she doesn’t know everyone has moved over to ChetTheDog. Seems to be a Animal Rights Activist, which is fine but, as B. pointed out, these dogs and horses love to race.

TYB: I know you are one happy dog today – on your anniversary.

Waiting anxiously for the story of how it all came to be, B.

HERE IS MY REVISION OF THE EXPLANATION OF THE ORIGIN OF OUR NAME. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO MAKE EDITING SUGGESTIONS. (I think that anything Snowhook posts on their site should take the form of a written interview with Spence.)

Origin of “Plunderers”: In answer to Spence who was wondering what we would do when technology takes over the world, B.Stover wrote, “One just plunders on.” (That is embroidered on one of our quilt squares.) The next day, Spence/Admin posted that they thought that very funny because they thought she meant “blunder.” They said that to “plunder on” would be their motto from then on. Eventually they named us the “Plunderers.”

Plunder has a negative denotation in most cases because it’s associated with gaining something illegally often from a defeated enemy. However, the American sense of plunder is derived from the German “plunder” which simply means “baggage.” In that sense Stover often tells her writing students to “plunder your minds to find the solution.” It means to work against all odds to find solutions to difficulties; to sort through the irrelevant baggage to find the thing that really matters in order to help make the world a better place.

  41. Tupper and Gilly
    11:42 am on April 6th, 2011

uh oh….Mama is up on her soap box about “professional” sports. And remembering that the word “fan” comes from fanatic. What is it about loyalty to a sports team that causes people to riot during playoffs, cause grave bodily injury to a fan of an opposing team, kill ancient trees and generally behave in ways that they would never do in the name of any other idea. Over-zealous sports fans act like extremeists who target others for their race or religeon. Really? Just because the other person happens to like a different sports team? And rarely are fans connected to a team by anything more than geography or mascot appeal. After that jerk poisoned those trees, there was an article stating that he never went to the school he was a fan or, and that most college sports fans are not alumni of the schools they root for.
NOT saying that enjoying sports is a bad thing…just saying that this country pays WAY too much attention to sports and some people lose their grip on reality. Every newspaper in this country has a sports section…why isn’t there a education section, an animal lovers section, a poetry section? Why does every locak newscast have news of the day, weather and sports?
Sorry, but to our Mama, this is just bizarre!

Snowhook: On their Snowhook Kennel page Rebecca has more pictures. She has answered a question I was going to ask Siber-H. I wanted to know what a four-wheeler was. I guess it is to use when there is no snow to train the dogs instead of the sled.

I have to tell you that my license actually does work. One day when my dad was shopping the clerk asked for his license before accepting his check. He handed her mine to get a reaction, and he got one. She said, “He’s a lot better looking than you are; I’ll take it.”

Hello. We’ve been enjoying reading the history of this blog, plunderers etc. We don’t get alot of time to catch up on stuff here, so we don’t know what anyone is talking about most of the time 🙂

We knew nothing about the quilt but that is really really cool! Thanks for posting the pic of it, Rio.

Tyb: Happy Happy re-Birthday and Anniversary. Mom says we are all rescues also. We just know that somehow we got picked to come live here on Howling Arabians Farm and we have been having a Howling Good Time ever since. So we think “rescue” must mean winning a prize or something.

Drivers License! TYB, You are a very handsome dog in that photo! Very cool, just like in the Subaru Dog Commercials. And, who said DL photos are never complimentary?

Howlers: Is Howling Arabians Farm a horse farm?

Staff, who is a wonderfully gifted quilter, put the quilt together for us. DebbieLM also helped out on some of the squares for those who didn’t know how to make them. Rio knows the details.

Rio wrote the mission statements and they are hilarious! Rio will have to post them. (We also had a mission to find Rio on March 5 and 6 of this year organized by Wookie and Wolfie. The posts of the 6th are especially fun. We found him that day.)

I think we should also include a mention of the blog mysteries that Spence writes for us….even though the Astrid case has not yet been solved.

T&G: Your mama is not “bizarre.” We should have more news and material on culture and literature in America. In one of the British newspapers, The Guardian, there are sections on art and literature. I get them on my Google Reader page and they total 20 and more articles daily. Our value system in America is flawed and the things currently happening in the field of education is actually frightening. It’s all part of the dumbing down of America (and I’m not suggesting that sports be eliminated, only that “art” be given the same value). Gibbon wrote about the “crimes, follies, and misfortunes of mankind” in his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire in the 18th Century. Who will write about the Decline and Fall of America and what will be the cause of that decline?

  51. Barb & Maggie

T & G, Does your mama have any extra room on her soap box? Barb always listens to the news, weather and then does some busy work when the sports segment comes on. I know, we are going to get blasted by Rio, but IMO sports are over-rated. So there!

TYB, Isn’t your name shortened from Thank You Blou? I know that is your pic on the DL but it is not your name. You can tell us our observant we are, thank you very much!

We just came in from planting. Now have 1 rasised garden done. This morning Barb planted shallots, spinach abd swiss chard. My job was to run amuck over the nice neat rows after she was done. She loves my help.

We are looking forward to the dinner party tonight, with the second course of soup and salad. Yummers!

Got to go, Barb is getting ready for ther afternoon at the Crazy Lady II’s place. She said she wishes she still drank! Heavily!

B: We do have horses. There is a sign at the end of our farm lane that shows a husky howling at the full moon, and there is an Arabian horse prancing across the moon. We think that’s there so everyone who drives by will know that us Sibes and Arabians own this place.
We are most interested to hear about “mission statements” .. what are they? And how do you all know each others? How come it seems like you all live close to each other? Maybe the Plunderers should publish their own book all about your history.

I remember the “irresponsible pet owner” comment, but it wasn’t on here. It was on a review of Dog On It. There person was upset because Chet leaps the fence when he hears a “she bark” and he is not fixed.

I remember a long comment I made back. snicker

TYB love the photo and you are indeed ready for your trip. But won’t you get in trouble using Blou’s license? Did you have it made in NYC or Vegas? I hear they do a great job in “reusing” licenses.

We also had the trip to the north to look for the leaning towers of Chewies. The Pack brought back a picture from that one.

Oley, We don’t live any where close to each other. We are located from the east coat to the west coast, Alaska, Canada, and Australia. Talk about spread out! We are just closely connected in spirit!

BTW, Years ago Barb had Arabs. She had a stallion that was Old Egyptian and was either a son or grandson of Fadyl (sp?) Does that rign a bell? This was way back in late 70’s and early 80’s. He was awesome and very calm and gentle for a stallion.

Oley: We know each other from this blog. It grew as more and more people read the Chet books, found the blog and posted. Rio pugnaciously got everyone to participate here and on missions. He’s written “mission statements” which, as I’ve said, are wonderful. We live all over the country and most of us have never met. Liz lives in Australia. It’s a support group and an extremely fun group to be part of because of all the intelligence, wit and arguing…and yes even the sports commentary…that goes on here. As Melanie said, we’re wonderful!

Barb: Two of our Arabs are part-Egyptian, but we don’t know all of the lines. We looked up the pedigree for Fadl and here it is:

B: Mom loves her Arabs also…Dad does too. We huskies think they are much over-rated and take up way too much attention. But we are buddies with them and we take our job of protecting them very seriously.

Thanks to all of you for filling us in. You guys seem great but like we said, its oh-so difficult sometimes to figure out what you all are talking about, seeing as you’ve been at this for quite awhile. Mom didn’t find this blog until after she finished the 3rd book. And she works all day so we have to do our full-time job of guarding those *%^(%*&Arabs so we don’t get a lot of time to review posts.

We’d love to see that map. We are in S.E. PA !

Hey! I just figured out how to bury my bone in the house! I was carrying it around, trying to figure out what the do with it. Then I saw that Mom and Dad had left some stuff on the floor while they’re working on the house, so dig, dig, dig, and my bone is buried! I bet they’ll never find it! So now I can eat it whenever I want to — I don’t have to wait for them to give me a treat!!!

OleyHowlers: We lurked for a long, long time before we posted, and we only did that because Chet had a contest that Mom entered. When Mom got an honorable mention, I finally decided it was time to stop lurking and start posting! I think Mom didn’t want to post because she was a little scared of Rio, ‘cuz he’s kind of grumpy. Luckily, I’m the brave one, and once I started posting I discovered that Rio may be grumpy on the outside, but he’s kind of squishy on the inside. (Just don’t tell him that!)

My dad has to admit that he doesn’t have senior moments any longer. He now has
senior weeks and months. He is in the midst of one of them now and looked at the picture but not the name. My license came from Blou’s and Dad didn’t notice that the name hadn’t been changed. The first two attempts were with my license and my name. In frustration, I guess, he grabbed another one that he had worked on and not completed. Actually it was just a test to see whether the rest of you are paying attention. Mea culpa! I’ll be sure that he corrects it before we leave on our trip.
    Thanks for catching us.

MollyPop: Please keep the snow. We are actually having a good day today.

Zoë drove for the first time in 2 1/2 weeks. She is very proud.

Rio: I had forgotten about that — now I’m all embarrassed! You just told that story because I said you were squishy inside!

But that does remind me, OleyHowlers, that several of the Plunderers have been able to meet SQ and/or PA. Mom was lucky enough to meet both of them! When she went to that book festival Rio was talking about, PA was speaking in the afternoon, then SQ spoke that night. Although they do look quite a bit alike, they were wearing different outfits, so the two of them do have different tastes in clothes!

Oley, Thanks for the link to the Fadl pedigree. He must have been grandsire of Barb’s old stallion, as he would have been too old to be his father. He must have been an early import from Egypt. Her horse was grey with ticking, and was not big, but had that beautiful Arab floating trot. They have the most beautiful heads, but some are a little on the hot side. Barb and her daughter who did a lot of riding and some showing, switched to Q. horses the last few years that they had horses. Is that your herd sire that you have pictured? He is breathtaking!

The blog from Sam was the hardest because the little princess insisted on black velvet and hand beaded decorations. Every time I got stuck I would email Debbie and she always had the answer.

Yes, I have a Subaru and I love it. My dad bought it used in 2005 and is still running it pretty hard. It has 175,000 miles on it and the only thing we have had to do is keep up the regular oil changes. Perhaps you read in the news someplace this week that Bradford, PA where we live won the coveted title as the city with the 2nd worst weather in the country. I take exception to that. Our weather can be tough and bothersome, but it’s never catastrophic like it is in other parts of the country. In any case to come in second in the contest (Fargo, ND won 1st place) we have to have some pretty cold temperatures and some pretty deep snow. The Subaru has never failed us. For 15 years Dad had a gallery and frame shop in a small ski town 30 miles away, and he never missed a day, nor did he ever open late because of the weather. Thanks to the subaru. Sounds as though I should be doing commercials.

  130. Tupper and Gilly
    7:58 pm on April 6th, 2011

Here’s our first soup for the night:

Kirby’s Buried Treasure Soup – a mix and match medley of ingredients

1 TBL butter OR olive oil
3 fresh tomatoes – peeled and chopped* – canned, diced, peeled tomatoes will work
a light pound of very thin asparagus – frozen is okay, but never (shudder) canned!
Optional – ¼ cup minced sweet onion OR two to three green onions, sliced very thin
4 cups low salt chicken OR vegetable broth – canned is ok, homemade is even better
1/2 tsp dried tarragon, rubbed fine, OR 1 TBL fresh tarragon, minced
Optional – 3 TBLS dry sherry OR sweet vermouth
6 oz brick cream cheese –cut into small cubes OR 6 TBLS sour cream

Melt butter or heat olive oil in a large saucepan. Add tomatoes and sweet onion if using. (Do not add the green onion if using). Stir over medium heat until tomatoes start to soften. Cut asparagus spears into approx 1 inch sections discarding tough white ends and add to tomatoes. Heat, stirring occasionally until asparagus turns bright green, just a minute or two. Add the broth and as soon as it boils, reduce heat to simmer, cover and let cook for about 10 minutes.
Uncover, add sherry or vermouth if using and cook one minute. Stir in tarragon and thin slices of green onion if using, replace cover and remove from heat.
Place small cubes of cream cheese into 6 or 8 serving bowls. Ladle soup carefully over the “treasures” of cheese. If using sour cream, ladle the soup into bowls first, then add a dollop of the sour cream to the top.

The wonderful thing about this soup is the fresh, spring taste, and the fact that you can change it from one time to the next by altering one or more ingredients.

    * Easiest way to peel tomatoes – cut a small “X” in the bottom, place tomatoes in a deep bowl, pour boiling water over them to cover well. Let them sit for a minute or two. Plunge into cold water, and the skin will slip right off with a little rubbing.

It has been quite a day – with all the great pictures and background information on the Plunderers. And, we’re not done yet. Soon we’ll be off to see T&G, Basil & Sage, and all of you!

  132. Tupper and Gilly
    8:00 pm on April 6th, 2011

And for those who are still in cold weather and want a nice, thick bowl of soup, we have:

Vorld’s Best Corn Chowder – rich and elegant, yet disarmingly simple

    5 TBLS butter
    2 onions, chopped
2 cans creamed corn – look for the cheapest, it is usually the creamiest
1 can whole potatoes, cut into small chunks or 1 can diced potatoes, rinsed
    1 quart half and half
    Salt and pepper to taste
Optional – ham chunks, or small strips of Prosciutto ham

Melt butter in a large saucepan, add onions and simmer over medium low heat about 10 minutes, until onions are soft and translucent. Open cans of creamed corn and empty entire contents into pot. Add potatoes and ham chunks if using. Bring to a light boil, cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.*
Uncover, add half and half and continue to heat over medium heat. Stir often, and do not let boil. Add salt and pepper to taste.

    * When we are doing this for a party, or in very large batches, we often do this part ahead of time, and then refrigerate the mix until near serving time. Then we reheat the corn mix, and add the half and half and we are ready to go.

Please, dig into the salads. there’;s plenty of time before the main course so you can have all you want, and you won’t feel stuffed. This is our favorite spring tradition, sometimes we even go and gather our own ferns:

Some of you are lucky enough to live in areas where fiddlehead ferns grow. If you can’t get these delightful little treats, asparagus is an acceptable substitute.

    Fiddlehead Fern Salad

1 lb fiddlehead fern coils, well washed
1 cup radishes, thinly sliced, or coarsely chopped
1 cup thinly sliced English seedless cucumber (or small pickling cucumbers)
1/3 cup thin sliced green onion
    Boiling salted water
    Bowl of ice water
Apple Cider Vinaigrette – recipe follows

If ferns look clean, wash them once more. And maybe even once more. Bring a large pot of water to a boil, add 1 TBL salt. Toss in ferns and blanche for 2 -3 minutes maximum. Drain ferns and immediately plunge into ice water.
Drain ferns and place in large bowl. Add radishes, cucumbers and green onions. Toss.
Add enough dressing to coat and toss well. Chill for one hour to let flavors develop.
Add salt and pepper as desired.

    Apple Cider Vinaigrette

    6 TBLS apple cider vinegar
    ¼ cup honey
¾ cup canola oil, or other mild flavor oil

Mix vinegar and honey together. Slowly whisk in oil. Add salt and pepper to taste

And welcoming our friends from SE PA, here’s an unusual salad. give it a try…it can be addictive!

Oley Orange You Glad You Asked Salad

    5 oranges, peeled and sliced
1 large red onion, sliced very thin

2/3 cup oil, canola is good, or a mild olive oil
    1/3 cup wine vinegar
    1 tsp sugar
    ½ tsp mild chili powder

Dark leafy salad greens or spinach leaves

1 gallon sized zip lock bag

Place orange and onion slices in the zip lock bag. Mix the oil vinegar, sugar and chili powder together and pour into the bag. Seal and gentle turn the bag a few times to distribute the dressing overall, without breaking up the slices too much.

Allow to marinate for an hour at room temp, or for up to a day in the refrigerator. Turn the bag occasionally to distribute the juices and dressing.

At serving time, lay the salad greens on a platter. Using a slotted spoon, scoop out the orange and onions or gently pour them into a strainer. Dispose of dressing and juices. Lay oranges and onions out on the salad greens. Dust with paprika.

And last, but not least for tonight’s offerings, something special we whipped up for one of our special Plunderers. Hope she will like it…it’s really good for her!

Support Staff Salad – Iron-Rich Quinoa with Fruit and Spices
    • 1 cup quinoa*
    • 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
    • 1 cup dried apricots, coarsely chopped
    • ½ cup raisins
    • 2 cups water
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • ¼ cup red onion, chopped fine
    • 1/4 cup cashews, chopped coarse
    • 8 cups baby spinach
    • Moroccan-Spiced Lemon Dressing (recipe follows), divided
    • optional toppings– sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds or wheat germ as garnish
Toast quinoa in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring often, until it becomes aromatic and begins to crackle, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a fine sieve and rinse thoroughly. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add apricots, raisins and the quinoa; cook stirring often, until the quinoa has dried out and turned light golden, 3 to 4 minutes. Add water and salt; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, until the quinoa is tender and the liquid is absorbed, 15 to 18 minutes.
Meanwhile, make Moroccan-Spiced Lemon Dressing. Transfer the quinoa to a medium bowl and toss with one half of the dressing. Let cool for 10 minutes.
Just before serving, add cashews and onion to the quinoa; toss to coat. Toss spinach with the remaining half of the dressing in a large bowl. Serve spinach and quinoa side by side so guests can take some spinach and mound the quinoa salad on it. Offer optional toppings if desired.
    Moroccan-Spiced Lemon Dressing:
    • 1/4 cup lemon juice
    • 2 tablespoons nonfat plain yogurt
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons honey
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
    • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
    • salt and pepper to taste
Whisk lemon juice, yogurt, honey, cumin, cinnamon and ginger in a small bowl until blended. Slowly whisk in oil so that the dressing becomes smooth and emulsified. Season with salt and pepper

*Quinoa was of great nutritional importance in pre-Columbian Andean civilizations In contemporary times, this crop has become highly appreciated for its nutritional value. Unlike wheat or rice and like oats, quinoa contains a balanced set of essential amino acids for humans, making it an unusually complete protein source among plant foods. It is a good source of dietary fiber and phosphorus and is high in magnesium and iron. Quinoa is gluten-free and considered easy to digest

    Bringing Us Together:

The Plunderers are and will always be Peter Abrahams and Spencer Quinn’s biggest fans. It has to be said that our love of Spencer’s Chet and Bernie series was the first common thread that pulled all of us together. Each of us sought out Chet’s blog after reading one or more of his books and then realized this was a unique blog that both animals and humans could post on. We all live in harmony here on Chet’s blog unless, of course, we are arguing about something. This rarely happens though.

    Where The Name “Plunderers” Originated:

The blog is really nothing more than a computer program created by Mike Baker of Baker Media. He is the go to guy when problems arise. Problems always arise when it comes to software. Last July we were experiencing a very nasty infiltration of Bugs, which made posting on the blog quite strenuous to say the least. Everyone was disgruntled and complaining. Peter was busy at the time trying to finish his latest middle school novel and found it all to be a bit much, at least that’s how I remember it. In his frustration over the blog bugs, he wondered out loud in a post what ever would we do when technology takes over the world. It was B. Stover who responded to his cry with “One just plunders on.” The next day Spencer / Peter posted that they found Stover’s remark funny because they thought she meant to “blunder on”. They decided “Plunder On” would be our motto from then on. Eventually the author fondly referred to all of us as the “Plunderers”.

The Whole Story and Nothing But:

As time went by we all realized we had more in common than our love for Chet and Bernie. We started posting about our lives, hobbies, families, human jobs, books, movies, TV shows, good grammar, civil war, poetry, oil spills and other current events, our likes and dislikes of certain balls, and chewy treats. You name it and we have talked about it. This place became a great way to learn about things we otherwise would not have taken the time to investigate. The Iditarod is an example of this. If not for the love of this sport by one of the Plunderers (SiberH!), the rest of us probably would have given it no thought year after year. More on this later.

The Plunderers are known for their extreme impatience while waiting for Spencer Quinn to finish a Chet and Bernie book. So we have on occasion gone on Mission Trips (short stories) to try and secure a copy of an advanced reader copy or to fiddle with Spencer’s computer so we can watch him work or get sneak peeks at the next book. Unfortunately, this has never proved profitable. These Missions will continue as long as Spencer is writing books, and everyone still enjoys them.

Throughout last year we as a group experienced the Olympics, book contests, the mysterious Astrid case, spring planting, tomatoes, the Edgar awards, baseball, twelve Newfoundland puppies, Dan’s book, struggling young actors, artists, recipes, unemployment, death, sickness, authors on tour, badges, bed bugs, Rockie the undercover squirrel, hillbillies, rats, Sestina’s, tin futures, kidney transplants, quilting, software upgrades, a book release, and finally the holidays. I’m sure I have left off quite a bit on that list.

I have to make special mention of “The Quilt.” The idea came about when it became evident that a lot of the Plunderers were quilters. With the upcoming release of “To Fetch A Thief” only months away, it was decided that as a group we would each contribute squares portraying ourselves for a special Quilt as a “Thank You” to the author and all his hard work on the books we love so much. It took a lot of coordination and a huge learning curve on the part of some Plunderers. One special member who was recovering from a kidney transplant agreed to put the quilt together for us while she was on the mend. We were able to send the quilt to Spencer / Peter just before the book was released. I think he kind of likes it. Here is a link to where the Quilt literally came together.

    What’s Next?

This year so far we have experienced the Supper Bowl, dinner parties, a rescue mission, Quacky Baseball, the Jumbotron, and the Iditarod together. As a group we have decided to sponsor Whitey and the Snowhook Kennels in the 2012 race. This will be the first project of the year for the Plunderers. Our plan is to continue to raise money all year long for the big race and hopefully get to know Rebecca, AJ, Whitey and the whole team a whole lot more before next March rolls around. I’m sure there will be other projects that sneak up on us and sweep us away. Stay tuned.

Well, that is the whole story of the Plunderers in a nutshell so far. We are a small but powerful community living each day under the banner of Chet The Dog’s blog. We welcome all newcomers and encourage everyone to read the Chet and Bernie series for the sheer enjoyment of it. Who knows, you too may be a Plunderer at heart.

  157. Tupper and Gilly
    9:18 pm on April 6th, 2011

Liz – whew, these are all easy fixes. First, half and half is a type of cream. It is actually half milk and half cream, but you can use any type of milk or cream that you like. We have made the chowder with light cream, milk and even once plain soy milk. Wouldn’t recommend that for the first try, but it wasn’t bad.
As to the potatoes, around here, the size is 15 oz, but just figure that it about the same size as the creamed corn can. And the true beauty of this is that you really can play around with the quantities of any of this to make it the texture you like.
Seedless cukes aren’t really seedless – these cukes are just really long and slender, so the seeds look kind of invisible. You can use any cuke, and just cut the seed spine out.
Now, the fiddleheads/asparagus….well, that one is a little tough to substitute…hmmm…not sure what the green veggie from Austrailia might be…most continents do have some type of grass veggie (asparagus and ferns are both grass types). Is there anything that you can think of?

Rio — that is a pretty big “nutshell” but I wouldn’t change a word — it was just perfect and what wonderful memories it captured. Everything is so yummy here at the soup and salad party. We (in particular mom) are especially partial to fiddlehead ferns, which are hard to find as far south as ChevyChase but we always have when we head to northern climes. Yum, yum, yum. And the Rockies beat the Dodgers again to boot. It just doesn’t get any better than this. Wookie

No Grace and Katie, Riö didn’t come this time. You’ll have to play soccer next time.

Pigtails. I have long hair. In the summer it can get hot so I’ll wear it up and back with hair clips or in pig tails.

A couple of towns over there are some cops who like to stop high school students and give them a hard time. So I’m driving merrily home one dusky evening and a cop coming the other way sees my pig tails, u-turns it and puts his lights on.

I was doing absolutely nothing wrong. He comes up to the window figuring he’ll be able to jerk a young girl around and gets me and Patsy. Patsy is sitting in the back seat. He leans down, realizes that I’m much older than he thought and then Patsy sticks her head between the seats and stares at him.

Patsy has a HUGE head. I said politely, “May I help you officer?”

He yammered something or another and let me go with a warning.

But he backed way up when he saw my Patsy, pumkin, kissy faced girl!

I’m excited about the Quinoa. I’ve never tried it. Seems to be a super food.
Gluten-free, protein that’s not meat, hmmm, how is it in soups?

I hate to say it, but I’m going to use some floo powder and head home to bed. The Pack can bring the van back.

I can’t let them use the floo powder because the last time they went to the White House to play with Bo. They thought he was a small Newfoundland. Well anyway, after what they did to the Lincoln bedroom is still talked about there. And everyone complained that Lincoln’s ghost has fled downstairs into the kitchens.

Zoë has me printing out the recipes something new to try. Thank goodness. I think a part of the winter doldrums is the same old food served the same old way.

Thanks for the great party. TTFN

Rio, That was great. I think you hit all the important parts and really summed up who we are. You must have spent a great deal of time on it, thank you.

Question about the quinoa. When you said to pile it on the spinach leaves, do you use them like a small wrap? They have dressing on them to, so it sounds like you would have to use a fork, or it woule be a little messy. Please explain that a little more.

We think Dawson did have to go back to work, so we are thinking she will not make it tonight. Pooh!

Oley – so glad you could come to the party, and glad you like the salad. Mama truly loves quinoa too – she makes it hot like oatmeal for breakfast, and cold for dessert like rice pudding, and throws some on top of salads, and on soup and just all sorts of things.
We hope everyone is having a great time at the party, but we have had quite a week, what with the caffeine, the getting ready for the party and being home alone more than usual. And Mama has to work all day tomorrow cuz her co-worker is still out sick and she has to do a double shift.
So, take your time, eat to your hearts content and feel free to take home doggie bags. There’s plenty of room for anyone who wants to camp out overnight.

Hi Barb and Maggie – so glad you could make it….
we usually put a layer of spinach leaves in a shallow bowl or plate and then put the quinoa salad on top of that. Yup, you do need to eat that with a fork. But now that you mentioned it, I bet that salad would be really good wrapped in lettuce leaves that didn’t have dressing on them. Hmmmm. We may just have some of that for lunch tomorrow.

Sorry, B. I’m thinking there shouldn’t be a space in overdid. Whatever the case, this is only the second time i’ve been wrong. I just don’t know whether it’s in the entry or in my “correction”. Good Night, All.

    OK Mr Husky,
did you want a helicopter ride home? I brought the lear jet. You will just have to make do. Staff wants to get home so she can go to bed.

OH yeah, Staff says Rio did really well on his history of the blog. I didn’t see any obvious errors but if he did a comma error I wouldn’t have a clue. B. can check it in the morning.

C’mon Mr. Husky. Let us go home.

Rio, When you wrote about all the things we talk about, did you mention the maurading goats? We did have a lot of fun with them.

Thank you T & G and the Herbs, and of course your mama, for the hospitality. It was a truly magnificant menu! Give us a little hint. Does the veggie dish for next week have little round green things in it?

BTW, we are almost at 200 posts today.

We are off to bed. Night all.

It was directed at you but I’m just teasing, I didn’t contribute anything much. Then or now! Let’s face it, I’m a recovering lurker and I know nothing about baseball so this is mostly just spectating on my part!

I’m home at last. I tried to get Medivaced over to the party but all the pilots were busy. I love chowder of any kind and quinoa. I would really like to have sampled fiddlehead ferns. I will see if I can book next Wednesday off so I don’t miss another party with my friends.

It’s Melanie’s real birthday. Happy Birthday Melanie. Any carrot cake left? I’m so hungry I could eat a moose. Now that reminds me of those cute moose cupcakes made out of twinkies cut in half, frosted and pretzels for the antlers.

Rio: Your summary of the Plunderers is right on.
LizF: Your contributions are of quality, not quantity. You were a contributor a looong time ago. I consider you a full fledged Plunderer and a part time lurker. I’m a part time lurker too.

Rio, you didn’t mention us when looking for an opinion on your post for Rebecca, but we thought the summation of the history of the plunderers and our formation on the Chet the Dog blog was great. We know several of the bloggers have mentioned it, but it bears repeating….we are there for each other. Many have had tough trials (both physical and emotional) over the past couple of years and it is so comforting to have each other for support.

By the way, we don’t remember if it was on one of Snowhook Bella’s post on this blog or on their website, but we thought it sounded like they were going to try to have 2 teams in the Iditarod next year…with both AJ and Rebecca racing a team. Does anyone else remember reading something like that?

Then she had to take a shower because she got paint in her hair. The whole process took her a loooooong time, and I had to supervise of course!
