Snowhook Update
“Maybe we should tell newcomers about Snowhook,” Spence says.
“Don’t let me stop you,” says Admin, possibly a little grumpy today on account of something about the coffee machine.
“Snowhook is a wonderful kennel up in Willow Alaska, run by Rebecca and her husband Justin, the musher,” Spence says. “They compete in the Iditarod and other races and have become friends with this blog and a big sub-group of its community called the Plunderers. The dogs of Snowhook are beautiful and are cared for in a loving way and we try to give them some support. A race is underway at this very moment, and here’s an update from Rebecca:”

Greetings plunderers from the middle of the snowy mitten. Looks like we’re finally getting some winter weather around these parts.
Mom is feeling tip-top again. She joined some friends from her busy place for happy hour yesterday and said she really enjoyed her vodka and grapefruit juice drinkypoos. Whatev! Water is my drink.
After two weeks of being sick as a kat, mom is planning to clean up our warm and cozy apartment, move the furniture around in the living room and then get back to her quilting projects. I’ll be trying to bite the vaccuum and run around like crazy when she moves the furniture (I don’t know why that fires me up) and then I’ll be supervising the quilting projects.

Hmmmm……I do believe that more than 15 dogs are running this race with AJ. Fargo, and Howard and Mollypop and Wookie and Teddie and Gracie and Bess and Brandy and Sasha and more than a few Kats. Not sure about the humans, though. Knowing my mom, they have special wide screen viewing with plenty of snacks.

It is cold enough here that the barn is below freezing, meaning it is difficult to keep the horses’ water buckets from freezing. So that has us wondering how Bella keeps the kennel’s water bowls from freezing, or how often she has to swap them out, or what the logistics are. And why don’t we have cheesecake?

Mama is kind of under the weather, so we have to be very quiet. Nothing serious, she just had the full round of doctors the other day and she is medicated and poked and prodded and shot to within an inch of her life. She thought she was so smart yesterday – feeling pretty good after all that. Then today, everything jumped on her and has put her back in the “wet noodle” category. But she is still cheering for Snowhook – albeit quietly.

I have it on good authority that Quig and Twig were in lead. They are a good match and I agree with AJ’s choice to put them in lead. He had Bjourn and Bridger’s son, Fritz in swing. I bet Bridger is watching this race with pride. I am watching with pride, that’s for sure. In first team were Elim and B Stover’s Charlie who can run lead along with the four others already named. Jesse as in James and Louisa Mae are in second team followed by…drum roll, please…Junior and Doc in what My Lady is calling fifth lead for Rio. The thieves, Pancho and Lefty are behind them, followed by Jem and my son, Marco. The wheel dogs, also from the fruit of my looms are Garrett and Abe. This has been Whitey-Lance reporting from Race Watching Central. W.L. out.

Melanie: I think the team is among the leaders, but no longer in second place. I think they are currently in fifth place. My Lady says two things: 1) a lot can happen between the runners and the finish line so she tries not to pay attention to placement this early on in the race—tries, and 2) AJ’s race strategy is to run this races as a training run and not push the dogs as if he were competing in a race. That doesn’t make sense to me, but she says to trust here. AJ wants to get miles on the dogs and this race is a good way to get back to back long runs on the team and see how they will perform in a race.
Melanie: My Lady says she is sending you love. I am sending you hugs. I am the best hugger in the kennel, rivaled only by Tomboy. I think I could take her if it came to it, but for now, I’m happy to share the title with her.

Wose: I am in Trouble! If you ask me Trouble looks a lot like Willow, but what do I know? Last night when my two-legged pulled onto the half mile long driveway, I jumped out of the trees. This is not allowed, me to be so far away from the Kennel and My Four-legged, you understand. I ran as fast as I could up the driveway towards the kennel, but my Two-legged says she saw me. I scurried, yes scurried, into my house with my four-legged, but my two-legged still says she saw me. Grump. When I pick you up at the airport this afternoon, can you tell my Two-legged she didn’t see what she thinks she saw?

Well I got sidetracked by Dad who fell in the bedroom. I heard this suspicious sound from upstairs and came down and peeked in the bedroom and there he was sitting on the floor.
We used the method Dawson taught us for how to get him up and he is up and fine and walking around. Then he wanted breakfast (at noon) so I did that. Now I am back with the news about the Booty Fund.

Melanie, we know why you are not understanding that leader board. You are seeing the checkpoint where AJ was in 2nd place as the last checkpoint when in fact it was the first checkpoint. The next checkpoint is then Finger Lake, which is the halfway point in the race, but the lates checkpoint reported. And he is in 5th place at this latest one.

Doctor approved of the facility Barb wants for rehab. He said it is a good one. Evidently he thinks the hospital pushes their own rehab for monitary reasons. He was not trying to be controlling. He comes in personallly and writes his initials on the knee before surgery. That is a good thing.
Barb was tempeted to run in the oppisite direction when he told her about infections and pulmonary embolisims (fatal strokes). Scary S**t!

My Lady just returned from picking up our dropped dog from a very caring volunteer. Who was the dropee? Elim. AJ sent him home because of a sore wrist. He will be fine, no doubt about it. Right now, he conned his way to a spot on the couch and is sleeping. I may have added a little of personal feeling into my last sentence.
My Lady has been going, going, going, all day and stayed up much of the night. She is going to try to get some sleep once it is confirmed AJ is into the next checkpoint.

I will get in the truck and drive to the finish line four hours after the team leaves this checkpoint and will play the waiting game from there. Rio: Right now, I’m trying to ignore my cold hoping it will go away. It isn’t working, but things are looking up. About an hour ago I thought about chocolate chip cookies.
