Sneak Peek: The Dog Who Knew Too Much
“Snow, big guy.”
Snow? I’d heard of it, of course, seen it lots of times on TV during the divorce, when for some reason Bernie had really gotten into skiing videos. The snow sent coldness up into the air. I sniffed at it. Snow went right up my nose! I sneezed. Bernie laughed. I licked at the snow. It turned into water on my tongue, although not much water. Bernie picked some up and patted it – hey! – patted it into the shape of a ball. Yes! One thing about Bernie: just when you think he’s done with amazing you, he amazes you again. Now, after all this time, I was just finding out he could turn snow into a ball. I knew what was coming next, one of my favorite feelings.
Bernie reared back to throw. He has a great arm – pitched for Army, in case that hasn’t come up yet – and can fling a ball a long long way. Whoosh. The snowball rose high in the sky. I took off after it, this bounding run I have when quick starts are needed. The snowball, sparkling against the blue sky, came arcing down. I caught up to it at the last instant and snatched it out of the air. But what was this? It broke apart and kind of vanished, leaving me with a cold nose; very different from any other ball I’d fetched.
Thanks, everybody, for all the comments re e-books.

Chet, you are wonderful!
9:29 am on January 22nd, 2011
Good morning B. Did you send us this freezing cold?
9:44 am on January 22nd, 2011
Good morning everyone. Chet, you are making us laugh this morning.
Lots of good comments yesterday. T & G expressed their thoughts so eloquently. We were very impressed. One thing that really resonated with us was the comments about the Serengeti Plain and the road going across it. We had read about it before and the motive of commerce, but didn’t know about the need to supply materials for kindles, ipods, etc. That makes the project even more questionable to us. All sorts of horrific things are going to come from that project, and it will give morally corrupt individuals a chance to operate more effectively.
9:55 am on January 22nd, 2011
There was a feature article in National Geographic a few months ago about the migration disruptions caused by “progress” and the Serengeti Plain was one discussed. So pointless..
That is some great reporting Chet, in the style that first caused us to fall in love with you. (Chet needs to have more fun, Mr. PSQA).
It is a balmy 28 here, with sun.
10:00 am on January 22nd, 2011
Chet: Snow is so much fun. Up where I am in Canada, it seems we have some every day. Enjoy those disappearing snowballs while they last.
10:04 am on January 22nd, 2011
Chet,

I’m glad you have had the experience of “fetching” a snowball. Chasing snowballs is one of he things I like best about winter, and I’ve been able to do a lot of it this winter. I love the snow, but I’m not crazy about the cold. When I took my first walk this morning the temperature was -6 degrees. I know the Alaska folks would consider this balmy weather; it’s a bit extreme for us. Here’s a photo of my shoveling the walk this morning.
10:20 am on January 22nd, 2011
It is a little warmer today-we had actual temps yesterday of -15 out here in the country. Today we should get up to 15-20, which is a big improvement. Barb is going to meet a friend for lunch. She is from Waterford, Michigan, visiting relatives for the weekend. Her friend is 48 or 49 years old, with a 6 year old. Barb says she is very brave!
10:22 am on January 22nd, 2011
The Pack wakes up in the cold. I think they would hibernate all summer if we let them. Then the cold and snow come and they just love it!
Still mostly out for the count. Everyone have a great weekend.
Watched Maggie Smith in the show I can’t remember right now. Best line was “What is a weekend?”
BBL with any luck.
10:31 am on January 22nd, 2011
Good morning all.
Sam: The wind chill is minus six today and it’s snowing. I guess I wanted to share the delights!
Tyb: You look grand in the snow.
Melanie: I wish you could remember the name of the movie.
10:33 am on January 22nd, 2011
Dawson: I hope you’re feeling better.
B&M: I’m wondering if “brave” is the word I’d use….!
10:34 am on January 22nd, 2011
Mr. Tibbs!…You are very brave indeed!…snort!
10:37 am on January 22nd, 2011
Off!…We are off to her mothers house for a bowl of cawffee and then a trip to Hobby Lobby for, yes you guessed it, supplies….grunt! …My living room looks like Hobby Lobby already…snort!
10:52 am on January 22nd, 2011
Rio – Be careful where you snuffle, snorkel, and sneeze. Don’t disturb any works of art.
11:08 am on January 22nd, 2011
Bee, Barb’s friend went from a MBA/business woman to a first time mom at 43! Took her till 38 to meet the right guy (a peach), and then a couple of years to get married, another couple to get & stay preggers, so there you go. She ended up with 1 beautiful daughter and enjoys every minute of it (almost). Barb says she would rather have dogs at this pioint in her life. Lucky me!
11:10 am on January 22nd, 2011
Good morning dear plunderers! Mom and I went to Aunt Mimi’s last night so I could play with my friends Obi the Pom and Cubbie the weiner dog. Mom was busy playing that funny swooshing game that always winds up with me getting hit in the head or the butt called Wii. She laughs and laughs with her sister Mary and their mom, but I am always trying to duck out of the way. I love going to Aunt Mimi’s because there is so much to sniff there. Mimi has a new tv, a 42″ plasma and mom fell in love. She wants that tv like I want a bone! But…cooler heads prevailed and mom did not buy the tv. She was inspired by the comnments yesterday and bought a Kindle and a lighted red leather cover instead. She also paid her car insurance for the next 6 months instead of buying that tv that she REALLY wants, but doesn’t need. She kept muttering something about responsible adult my ass, I want that tv! as she was paying the car insurance online. Me? I was sleeping in her lap dreaming about all the butt sniffing that I did with Obi and Cubbie.
11:20 am on January 22nd, 2011
SNOW!! There is going to be SNOW in The Dog Who! Chet gets to play in the SNOW!! From the sneak peaks we are getting, The Dog Who may turn out to be my favorite of Chet’s books.
That is a lot of snow, Tyb. If we got that much snow here, the public would think it is the end of the world for sure. I am so jealous.
Sunshine and a high of 55 here today…boring, but better than summer.
11:21 am on January 22nd, 2011
Jazzy..sounds like a wonderful day. Even though there are five of us here, we mostly quit sniffing each other, same old news, day after day. I would really like to get out and sniff something new.
Barb, mom says that just reading about your friend makes her want to take a nap. I am glad that I had my puppies when I was young, and no more for me, mom made sure of that.
I see that those spicy Kats have not been around yet. They will probably be sleeping off all the nip until afternoon.
Melanie..here’s hoping for good strong meds and peaceful Newf days.
B..snow..what can I say?*sigh*
Tyb..it looks like you almost need to wear a safety flag when you head out into those snowbanks. Don’t get lost! Beautiful fluffy tail, BTW. I have a touch of tail envy.
Mr. Husky, if you have not already, be sure to read my last post from yesterday.
11:28 am on January 22nd, 2011
Macy and TYB, Don’t want to set Rio off here, but that fluffy tail is pure English Shepherd. I have a tail that is beyond description it is so fluffy, and naturally hi-lighted, too.
Barb is going to meet her friend and family, I am going to nap. BBL
11:34 am on January 22nd, 2011
Now SH is making me laugh.
I agree with Macy about Barb’s friend. It’s wonderful and I’m glad she’s happy but….oh, the energy.
Jasper: What kind of Kindle cover did your mom buy? It had a light attached?
Rio is making me laugh about his Hobby Lobby living room. Mollypop is correct–you need to be very careful.
Dog Who sounds like another wonderful C&B caper. Wonder where they are in the snow….
11:42 am on January 22nd, 2011
I do not play fetch with snowballs.
Miss Macy, I just read it. I am blushing, but I like you too. If you are going to hang around with a Husky, you will have to give up fireplaces, the heater turned on in cars, and hopefully keep the thermostat in the house below 50 degrees.
pssst, Maggie Wonderfluffs her tail.
12:15 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Tub, that is a lot of snow and you are very handsome!
Melanie, I hope your knee calms down soon.
Barb, don’t tell your friend this, but her daughter will be a teenager in a few years!
12:16 pm on January 22nd, 2011
B. – Mom has a Kindle cover with a light that she got from Amazon. It’s made by M-Edge.
12:17 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Er, I meant to say Tyb, not Tub! (blushing)
12:28 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Mollypop: I do have an M-Edge light but I thought Jasper said the light came with the cover they bought.
12:34 pm on January 22nd, 2011
umm Do those lights work well on the Kindle? Mom is filing all this information away in her brain in case she buys a Kindle someday.
12:50 pm on January 22nd, 2011
The M-Edge light comes separately and requires the cover with the slot that it goes in. It’s called the e-Luminator.
12:51 pm on January 22nd, 2011
SH: Yes they do work well. I have another light that I like better. I ordered it from Verilux and it’s called a “Full Spectrum Book Light.”
1:31 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Mr. Husky, it’s ok..it was just my imagination…running away with me..aall together now…It was just my imagin-aaaa-tion…Running, away with me.*tails swinging with the music*
I was just watching mom scrape the hair off her legs and I have got to say that I do not understand the concept. She had better stay away from MY legs with that scraper thingy. (mom said that I was bordering on TMI there, sorry)
Siber boy..you are asking for trouble..Maggie is going to fluff you, but not in a good way..
Wolfie’s got a crush on Tyyyyyyb! (I wish mom would go find something else to do besides read over my shoulder, she said that was not nice either, but I don’t care..I am in a FRISKY mood today. Ain’t no stoppin me now…..
1:49 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Wolfie,
Thanks for the compliment. I knew you meant Tyb and not Tub. No need to blush Sometimes our toes hit the wrong keys because they don’t have the reach of our friends fingers.
1:51 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Here’s a link/pic of the leather cover w/light I bought.

1:55 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Thanks Stover and Mollypop for your answers.
aww Miss Macy..that is usually a problem with a Husky having a relationship. We tend to hang out with one another because of our strange ways. My two best friends at the dog park are Huskies. I hope it wasn’t just your imagination, though.
2:29 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Fire!…. I’m imagining Siberh-Romeo’s tail catching on fire because he is lying too close to that dumb fireplace…heh!
2:29 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Did we miss it or has no one else noticed B’s new avatar?
2:46 pm on January 22nd, 2011
B. Maggie Smith said “What is a Weekend?” in the first episode of Downton Abbey.
That’s a lovely new avatar you have!
3:13 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Mollie: Oh, right. I knew it was familiar. Thank you.
Hi B&G. I was going through photos on my other laptop and found this photo that I took two years ago. It’s the only one I like.
3:28 pm on January 22nd, 2011
B=it’s a really good picture! Our mom hates having her picture taken. It seems candid shots always catch her at her worst!
3:29 pm on January 22nd, 2011
B, did you just change it again?
3:30 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Oops, mom didn’t have her glasses on. Sorry.
3:34 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Stover’s new avatar…I like it! This is only the second real human we have with an avatar…that is when Dawson isn’t being a moose.
3:56 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Thank you SH and G&B. It was when I got my new camera (Nikon) and I was trying things out.
4:02 pm on January 22nd, 2011
We tried to click on B’s avatar to make it bigger so we could really see it, but nothing happened. How do you do that?
And Siber, I DO NOT Wonderfluff!!!!
4:24 pm on January 22nd, 2011
I, too, noticed the new avatar and wondered if we could enlarge it. Does anyone know how?
4:46 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Avatar!…I tried, but its awfully fuzzy…snort!…I think she did that on purpose…heh!
4:50 pm on January 22nd, 2011
I am confused. The avatar looks like a landscape to me. Is B a tiny person somewhere in a field?
4:52 pm on January 22nd, 2011
I did not hear anybody singing along with me?hmm
5:01 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Mom has a question: I wasn’t primary caretaker but did visit a friend’s dog mid-day while she was away for 10 days. The dog was glad to see me but wasn’t unhappy when I left. Today the dog was excited, blurring and rolling in the snow. A little later today my friend came home, two days early. Would you all have known that your people were coming home early? Do you other Kats on the blog have that kind of intuition?
5:18 pm on January 22nd, 2011
I, personally, have attached a tracking device to mom, so I know where she is at all times. Belle, however, never runs to the door unless dad is home. She knows. Maybe intuition, maybe some sound clue, but she knows.
5:25 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Bluecat, I don’t know the answer to your question. Mom wouldn’t go off and leave me for 10 days. Where she goes, I go.
5:44 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Bluecat: Maybe the dog was just glad to see your mom and to be in the snow.
6:42 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Macy, although I adore Cyber H, I’m still crushing on Sam.
hey, mom is going to get a new book today. Should it be “Katie Up and Down the Hall” or “The Lost Dogs”?
6:48 pm on January 22nd, 2011
The Lost Dogs is a good read and so is Scent of the Missing.
7:12 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Book!… My friend found an old book by the Charming Mr. Abrahams today at the used book store…heh!…I think it is called Revolution #9 ….snort!….Today she also cleaned out the refridgerator. I watched that process very closely indeed…grunt!… Then her neighbor came over and chatted forever while all of our food was sitting out on the counters. I swear, I didn’t think that guy would ever leave…sniff!
Sherlock!…Then after all of that, she started some intense Quilling while I watched Sherlock. The ending drove me crazy! Sherlock, Dr. Watson and Moriarty all standing by the pool etc. I won’t give anything else away in case someone still hasn’t seen this episode…snort!… Is there another episode after this cliff hanger?…grump!
7:16 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Snicker, by the time I read all the comments and got to the bottom, I forgot what they said . . .
Thanks to whomever remembered the name of that show.
I now am taking a heavy pain reliever and tylenol. The tylenol is helping with the swelling.
Zoë ordered a software and attachements today that help you train your breath and heart rate. Hope it gets here soon.
My sister came today and helped out with household chores and such. Zoë got to rest this afternoon.
DO YOU REALIZE THAT WHEN SPENCE STARTS UP AGAIN WITH OUR ON LINE STORY, IT MEANS THAT HE’S REALLY DONE WITH THE DOG WHO KNEW TOO MUCH?
Awesome.
Well back in bed for me. TTFN
7:28 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Zow!… Poor Melanie. I hope she doesn’t become a drug addict because of that bad knee…sniff!… I hope the Newfs are helping her to get well somehow…snuffle!
7:34 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Bluecat, I think that animals have a “knowing” of things. it is one of the things that make it so magical. (This is from Wolfie’s mom.)
7:36 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Melanie, did the doctor tell you that the recovery period would be that painful? When do you go back for follow up? Since the aliens in your knee are rare, do they really know what’s going on? Hope you feel better soon. At least Dan is home and Zoe isn’t having to go back and forth to the rehab. All 3 of you need to get better soon!
7:48 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Rio: I can’t remember the end of Sherlock but there were only three episodes.
8:26 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Stover!… I can’t believe you don’t remember that cliffhanger!…grunt!… It was such a good episode and the ending is driving me crazy!…snort!
8:34 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Rio: I think I do remember it…all three of them by the pool.
8:34 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Hey, y’all! Mom worked all day, then she got home and I had pizza crust, and now I’m finally here!
Macy: You asked a question yesterday, but Mom did errands and went to Dad’s basketball game, so I never got back on the computer until just now. Mom’s library has a downloading service for e-books called “OverDrive,” so that’s the one we know about. According to OverDrive, “Library eBooks cannot be read on an Amazon Kindle. DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected ebook formats are incompatible with this device.”
The way somebody else explained it, the digital books are “locked” and require a device to “unlock” them. Kindle doesn’t have the right “key” to unlock the books, but other devices — such as Nook, Sony Reader and Apple products — do. The Kindle “key” unlocks books only from Amazon, because Amazon has a proprietary right to that particular key. My guess is that as long as Amazon is making money with things the way they are, there is no pressure on them to make their devices compatible with free library usage.
8:43 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Good evening everybody. Its been such a long day. Mama had to go to work for the Crazy Lady this morning, and then she and Daddy spent the day at a non-orange box home repair store looking at cabinets and stoves and all kinds of things that make Mama excited. All we care about is that there is room in the new kitchen for our dinner bowls. Everything else is pretty boring to us.
Rio – thanks for the Wooo’s. But Basil and Sage are pouting about something you said to them. (its okay with us if you give them a hard time – Sage has been playing his game of Jump on the Sleeping Corgi since way early this morning, and we are just tired of it)
Tyb – you are just beautiful in the snow! Would you come break a path thru for us so our delicate little underparts don’t have to get dipped into icey cold snowbanks?
Maggie – We are sure your tail is gorgeous, no matter if you Wonderfluff or not – don’t listen to those guys – they are just jealous and love to tease the pretty girls.
And Macy – you shameless hussy (tee hee) We would love to be there to see Siber blushing.
8:55 pm on January 22nd, 2011
SiberH!….He has gone up in smoke!…heh!
8:59 pm on January 22nd, 2011
T&G: Mom’s in deep doo-doo with Dad because they also had gone to a non-orange box store and found an unfinished sink base for the laundry room that was on sale, but when she was supposed to go buy it, she had another idea that she thought would work better, only it didn’t. And then Dad went this morning to buy the sink base after all, but it was gone. And then my boy called all the other non-orange box stores and found out they didn’t have it either. In fact, none of the non-orange box stores in the whole state have it. The one in our town was the last one, and it was there the other day but now it’s not. So now Mom has to piece together other unfinished pieces to make the right size, or buy a finished one. Both options will cost more than the other piece would have. Oops!
9:04 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Oooh! Speaking of box store stuff, I’m going to have to leave for a little while. It’s time for Renovation Reality. It always makes Mom and Dad feel better to watch other people mess up!
BBL!
9:04 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Oh dear Kirby – around here we have a place called ReStore. They have all kinds of wonderful building supplies and architectural salvage stuff . Some is brand spanking new, and other stuff is neat vintage stuff like stained glass doors. Mama loves to go there and poke around. Maybe you have a store like that near you? Maybe they would have a good sink base?
9:19 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Rio, I am reading The Fan.
9:27 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Good night all.
9:50 pm on January 22nd, 2011
I guess I would not want a Kindle if I could only buy e-books from Amazon for it. I would want an e-book that could get downloads from the library.
However this talk on the blog has made me think I will just stay with ‘real’ books. If I want to download from the library I can do it to my laptop. And at least I would have the book to donate to my library when I was done with it. Or loan out to friends.
The e-book thing reminds me of cell phones. They are supposed to be so wonderful, but what you have is constant interruption and you get charged for sending calls and receiving calls. The phone company gets to charge two people for the same call. Sheesh!
Hey BStover I like your new avatar. It is nice to get a fresh one every once in a while. At least that is what Alice and Abbie say. BTW did you see my post last night about the Science Magazine cover? It was really late.
9:51 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Macy – we are NOT sleeping all day – just been very very busy torturing Corgis – besides which we aren’t “spicy cats” -we prefer to think of ourselves as “well-seasoned”
9:51 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Jeez I missed BStover again! Drat. That is what I get for going to a party with the Teddy Bears all afternoon and sleeping all morning. Tsk tsk tsk…
10:30 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Fan!…What part are you reading SiberH!…heh!…We are being fans and watching the Australian Open…grunt!…I don’t know if it is live or not – I doubt it…sniff!
Project!… My friend only has to make 6 more objects for the project. These six are the main event though, so she is going to work on them when she isn’t so tired…grunt!
10:37 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Yaaaaaawnn…..’scuse us everyone. We’re soooo tired. G’night.
10:45 pm on January 22nd, 2011
T&G, we are all tired too. We better go to bed early again.
Nighty night everyone.
‘cept you know who. Hi LizF!!!
10:48 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Sleep!… What a bunch of sissy’s ….hmmmphf!…. I bet Liz at the Australian Open….sigh… I actually think I am watching it live because I saw a clock and it meant they are 16 hours ahead of me, which I think is correct….sniff!…Only Wookie would really know the answer to that one…heh!
11:08 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Rio, I am reading Chapter 5 now…making good progress. I have also been watching Alaska State Troopers. They show all this beautiful scenery along with the law enforcement stuff just to get dogs like me to watch it. I wouldn’t watch it if it were Florida State Troopers.
I am looking forward to seeing your friends latest project.
We are going to bed now and read some more of The Fan.
Good Night Everyone!
11:43 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Fans!… We finished that book yesterday!…heh!…We could not put it down. Loved the baseball parts, wish there had been more…sniff! …Will Spring ever come? Watching tennis is helping a bit tonight. Federer is not looking as good as he usually does. He just lost a set. Good Grief! This doesn’t happen very often…sniff!….Exciting stuff, we may be up all night long!…sneeze!
11:47 pm on January 22nd, 2011
OK, I’m back, but just long enough to say goodnight!
T&G: We don’t have a ReStore around here, but it sounds like it would be right up Mom and Dad’s alley! I know you’re new to the blog, so you don’t know that our house was built in 1888. I’m like Chet, anything more than two is confusing, but even I know that’s pretty old! According to Mom and Dad, it’s also a bunch of projects, or maybe just one really big project. Whatever it is, it’s taking forever! They made a new kitchen a year and a half ago — took everything out down to the bare walls — including the wallpaper! — then put in new cabinets, floor, granite counters, appliances, and even the kitchen sink! But there are still parts of that to finish — like the trim and the backsplash and the curtains and — well, you get the idea! Mom and Dad tend to get enthusiastic about something, for awhile anyway. One of their vows for this year is to actually get their projects finished!!!
11:49 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Looks like everyone is going to “hit the hay” early tonight, except maybe Rio. We are next.
Kirby, Tell your mom not to feel bad, things like that happen. Tell her that when Barb was doing a major remodel on her kitchen, she decided to use white painted cabinets. She bought used custom cabinets from someone who was redoing a kitchen. She needed a few more to fill in, both base and wall cabinets. Since she was painting them, she could sort of mix and match, as long as door design (raised panel) was the same. She went to some high end cabinet shops and asked to see their reject room. Most custom shops have them. She actually bought several cabinets for 5-10% of original cost. Example: $350.00 piece for $30.00. When people look at our kitchen, they have no idea that she did this. Just a thought.
Night all.
11:49 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Rio: Have fun watching tennis. I’m off to my nice, warm bed — which doesn’t have any baseball toys in it, but it’s nice anyway!
Goodnight, y’all!!!
11:52 pm on January 22nd, 2011
Wow, Maggie, that’s a great idea. I’ll have to see if we have anything like that around here. Since it’s just for the laundry room — and Mom and Dad are going to paint it anyway — it doesn’t have to be fabulous, just useful!
And now I really am going to bed! Goodnight again!!!
12:08 am on January 23rd, 2011
We were briefly at -20 for a few hours. I was really happy but the next thing I knew the temp suddenly started falling and we are back at -40. The next few days doesn’t look good. I am still waiting for the warming period promised a few days ago. This part of winter is really hard. We have more daylight but it is still bitterly cold–a lot of people fight depression about now. Most northern climes have alcohol problems for a good (or bad) reason.
Rio: my job is safe but I am at the end of my career. If I had known about the cuts earlier I could have planned to retire and save some young teacher’s position. I remember being pink-slipped 3x at the beginning of my career and it was sad and painful.
1:01 am on January 23rd, 2011
Charris!….I get depressed every time you tell us your temperature…sigh…Australia is having summertime right now, so it is fun to watch the tennis matches….heh!…Those guys are sweating but good…grunt!… So you and Stover are both considering retiring soon, eh? That’s too bad….someone here has a long road ahead before she can retire…snuffle!
Awww!…Federer has won again…heh!…So we are probably, maybe, kind of, gonna go to bed now…sniff!…Maybe….heh!
