Sneak Peek

“How about a sneak peek at A Fistful of Collars?” Spence says.

“Too soon,” says Admin.

“In that case, maybe we shouldn’t mention it at all.”

“Then I wouldn’t be me,” says Admin.

Welcome Zena.

    Welcome, Zena…what a beautiful dog!

“Then I wouldn’t be me”…you’re a real laugh riot, Admin.

Siber, can you please post a link to the Karen Ramstead video you told us about? We read about the moose attack on those poor sibers. How awful. Mom’s first Sibe was named Boris Badanov. He could have handled That Moose (and his squirrel friend).

Well, Plunderers, I may or may not have some good news regarding my boy Chad.

On Thursday, he called mom and told her that he was ready to go to Teen Challenge. TC is a faith based reovery center located about 2 1/2 hours away.
It is an answer to prayer.

He has committed to March 3, not coincidently the start of the Big Race.

Mom and I are worried that he will be partying too much in the upcoming week and he will change his mind. We wanted to take him yesterday, but he wanted to say goodbye to all his ‘friends’.

And so we ask a two folded prayer. One, that Chad will allow himself to take this opportunity, and two, that he will keep his heart open so that he can be healed.

Oh, and three, that Cody will follow suit.

    Thank you.

    Wolfie,
I’m happy that I’m here to help you out with your prayer request and I apologize for letting you down with the turkey breast recipe yesterday. I was “on duty” elsewhere.
Reading the blog, I think you got good advice from Sam. Nothing but the turkey breast in the pot. I usually cook it on low because I start it before I go to work and when I get home it’s done. My sister has started it on high and gone to low after an hour or two.
Actually, I don’t think you can go wrong on the temp. Whichever one you choose, you can tell when it’s cooked just by looking at it. I’ve been held up a couple of times and the turkey has cooked for 10 and 12 hours. It was falling off the bone when I got to it, but it stayed moist and tasty.

Wolfie – My prayers are always with your boys. This will be a tough week for Chad, but if he actually does this, it is a significant step. It can’t be easy to commit to giving up addictions. That alone takes courage.

Hey, y’all! I must say, Admin gave me my laugh of the morning. Good thing I wasn’t eating at the time — I would’ve sprayed food all over the monitor! Maybe that’s why Mom won’t let me eat at the computer, even though she does.

Mom just printed out a photo Rebecca sent her — a picture of lead dog Twig sleeping after last year’s Iditarod finish. She’s going to take it with her to the store this morning so she can pick some coordinating paper for her storytime craft on Saturday. I think she’s looking forward to this year’s race almost — but not quite! — as much as AJ and Rebecca are!!!

Another one for Siber-H: a miniature cache in my yard. This one is 6′ high. Students at my school made it, I bought it and two teachers brought it to my yard. A real one would be much bigger and much higher. (Used to keep meat safe from bears, wolves, etc.)

If it helps, I would like to share here. The Prof and I spent a good deal of our twenties and early thirties using the evil weed.
There is nothing glamourous about it….only the false things we put in our heads…we were cool, creative, happy. The truth is that we were none of those things. We were depressed, paranoid, had no ambition of any kind, and fat. After a few health scares on each of our parts, we decided it had to stop, and it did. Now the Prof has been teaching for 10 years, something that never would have happened while under the influence. The Prof and I have good jobs, we are happy and comfortable, and if not for the annual tune-ups that getting older brings, we are mostly healthy.

I pray for you, your family, and the boys.

Hey! Speaking of jobs, did I tell you my girl got one up in Nashville? (If I did, please forgive the repeat!) She got hired last week to teach a class of 2- and 3-year-olds at a Montessori-type preschool. She’s in love with the kids. Awards!….sniff!…We did not get to see the end of the Academy Awards last night…grunt!…The show that only comes around once a year. No, we had to go upstairs and listen to her mother rant and rave about Beau. Seems she tried and tried to make him go outside, but when she wasn’t looking he performed his circus act along side of her bed instead….wheeze!…So the Award for really bad behavior goes to Beau.

Gone. … Now Beau has 3 paws out the door of his good home….sniff!… Her mother won’t let him live with us anymore, so my friend has to find a home for him. She is terribly sad today, as she is the only one who likes him…sniffle!

  24. Tupper and Gilly
    11:42 am on February 27th, 2012

Oh Rio – we are sad for your friend and for Beau. He has improved so much from when he first arrived. Is there any chance that your friend’s mother will relent and let him stay just a little longer and see if some of the last “kinks” can be worked out?
When Gilly first came here, she was pretty crazy too. We will never know her history, beyond the neglect part, but we do know she had a tough time of it.
She had some pretty bad habits when she got here – biting to get attention, not sleeping at night, etc. Ok, so she is still a little crazy – some things are just imbedded too deep – but she is a very good and now happy dog. She no longer bites, she sleeps well and she loves her family.
Beau has made some progress, right? Maybe, just maybe he can continue.
p.s. – there is a spray you can get at the pet stores that keeps dogs from marking indoors – just sayin’

Wolfie – prayers indeed going up for everyone in your family. And we know just how important prayers are, don’t we?

  25. Siber-H
    11:51 am on February 27th, 2012

Rio, I know your friend is sad about Beau and I’m sorry, too.
I’m going to put my two-cents worth in and say I think Beau is peeing in the house because he was never housebroken to start with. That is usually the case with this problem. The dog shrinks say that dogs don’t do things out of spite. Beau doesn’t know any better.
That said, The only way to fix this behavior is to start at the very beginning and housebreak him like you would a puppy. It takes a lot of time and attention and your friend works. Mom thinks it would be even more difficult to do with an adult dog. Your friend’s mom could not even begin to do this.

    12:02 pm on February 27th, 2012

Rio, If you guys do decide to find a new home for Beau, I Googled it and there is a Pug Rescue in Denver. Should you go this route and contact them, you would need to give them a good story (the truth) about how your friend took Beau in because he was being dumped.
Rescues are overburdened now, and I hate to say this, you would need to “lay it on thick” with them.

  31. Mollypop's Mom
    12:06 pm on February 27th, 2012

Rio – A lot of behavior can be changed with food. For example, Beau didn’t want to go out last night. I bet if someone who had treats in her pocket went outside, he would want to come along. Then his behavior would be rewarded. Positive reinforcement works wonders.

  32. Siber-H
    12:09 pm on February 27th, 2012

I will add to that and say the treat also needs to be put in the dog’s mouth right after the dog does his duty outside. The timing needs to be quick on this one.

    12:33 pm on February 27th, 2012

Rio! Oh, no! Not Beau! Can your friend call a Dog Whisperer/Animal Communicator-type like the Oley Howlers used? Could his favorite kat toy be used as an enticement? We can only imagine the frustration your Friend and her mother are going through, although it sounds like she is much more tolerant than her mother. Beau has learned so much in only a little over two months, it seems a shame for her mother to throw in the towel now. Having said that, the marking in the house is something few would have the patience to put up with.
Whatever you decide, we wish you and your family the best. We know what a heartbreaking decision this is for them to make.

Howlers: While Mom was going to checkout Zena at FOC she took a quick peak at Raksh, the Coydog (what piercing eyes you have), Chuck the Elephant Hunter and the little Hoosier Hot Shot (a cutie)
Rose: Don’t feel like the Lone Ranger. Many of us have experimented back in the day. Holding regular jobs by day and partying at night. Sadly for some the “experiment” turned into an addiction similar to that of Wolfie’s boys. Those prone to such things, whose bodies cannot tolerate even the smallest amounts of alcohol/cannabis & the like, are soon sucked into the vortex. Same goes for cigarette/nicotine cravings.

C.Harris: The icy roads may make those traffic circles/round-a-bouts involuntary. lol

  49. C.Harris
    2:19 pm on February 27th, 2012

Even Fairbanks doesn’t have traffic circles. There is one main road in North Pole that has all the stores, etc. in a 4-block area and people were risking life, limb & car entering and exiting the businesses and dodging traffic. So traffic circles was the solution.

Tell your friend’s mom that neglect and abuse and abandonment take a long time to heal. When they were pups, my boys went through hell. They are still dealing with PTSD and all kinds of things, but I believe that they will come around. I hope her mom decides to give Beau another chance. He is a Plunderer now.
Perhaps your friend’s mom’s bedroom (B? Can that be correct?) can be off limits to Beau? I think it would break your friend’s heart to send him off, and this has already been a year of loses for her. (Maybe you can play the sympathy card by reminding her that your friend was supposed to be in Alaska right now, and would be, if life had not interrupted.)

  51. Tupper and Gilly
    2:21 pm on February 27th, 2012

CHarris – we live in a little itty bitty village too, and when there was a round-about proposed for a dangerous intersection, the people poo-ed it – said it would never work, that it wasn’t necessary, that a simple traffic light would be better, etc. Now that it is in place, we have to admit (and we hate to) but the thing really works. And now we are pushing for another one in another dangerous area right near our home. We currently just hold our breath when we go thru that intersection, and that probably isn’t the best long term solution.
But we don’t have any way-cool ice sculptures on our round-about. Heck, this year, we don’t even have any ICE!

And now – seeing as it is Monday – it is errand day. BBL, and hopefully Melanie will be home and reporting on the FOTAS shower.

And now for Post Office Absurdity #2. I just went to the PO to mail a small package that weighed less that 1/4 pound. I had my choice of ways to send it. To guarantee delivery by Wednesday I would have to pay $33.65, probable delivery by the end of the week would cost only $9 dollars and change, or I could get it there by next Monday for $2.67. I went for the $2.67 because the item is not perishable and , I think, worth waiting for. I’d be willing to bet that it gets there before next Monday.

Mother!…. Well, all good suggestions and most of them have been tried and tried again…grunt!…One problem with her mother (and there are several, let me tell you) is that she is inconsistent….sniff!… She has NO CLUE how to make me and Beau behave or do what she wants…sniff! … The small act of closing her door at night eludes her. She says he will scratch at the door and “ruin it”. My friend has told her mom she would come up and put a pillow or blanket in front of the door after she goes to bed so Beau won’t scratch. This works well with the door to the basement when he is downstairs and wants to be upstairs….heh! ….The other problem is no one can pick Beau up….sniff!….He goes berserk if someone tries to lift him. So they can’t just grab him and through him outside. Or take him and show him what he’s done and reprimand him. He gets all aggressive and growls and lunges at anyone who reprimands him….gruffle! …The guy has issues. But my friend thinks he is getting better each day. Unfortunately, her mom is the one cleaning up the mess during the day or night (like last night) as the case may be…sniff! ….She’s fed up with it I guess…wuffle!

Shelter!….The one no-kill shelter in town has turned my friend down saying they are relocating to a smaller building and they are transitioning to a more foster based rescue program and are not accepting any new dogs at this time…..grunt!…My friend countered with a proposal asking if they would post Beau’s photo on their webpage so that their adoption and screening procedures could be used in finding him a new home. Beau would stay with us until a new family could be found for him, just like any of their foster homes would be doing for him….snort!….She said she would pay any of the expenses that the shelter would have by doing this….sniffle! …No word back yet on that…grunt!….Pug Rescue of Denver has not replied at all…wuffle!

TYB: Hmm…that package description sounds familiar. Your dad definitely made the right choice (we are wondering however about the advice given by that postal employee) We here send a lot of things Media Mail. Many times the delivery time is the same as for Parcel Post which costs more. Another interesting discovery of late, is noticing the same delivery times for Priority Mail and First Class Mail going to Alaska. What’s up with that?

Beau’s past issues continue to haunt him. We shudder to think of what he has gone through in the past. Too bad he can’t get a quick lesson from either The River Bears or The Snowhook Pack.

He can be a real jerk, but he seems to like her a lot and he rarely acts up around her anymore…wuffle!…But her mother and him have had terrible fights lately, all because of his marking…grunt!

Oh, Rio, I feel sad too. I guess there is not way to separate your friend’s mom and Beau? Even though I have not met Beau personally he seems like a good dog…..I need a tissue.

Rio, we are so afraid that Beau losing his home once again will set him back on his learning. And the next home may not be as careful as your friend to find him a home and not a shelter.
It is difficult to take on any animal, let alone one with past issues, when you share a home with someone who is not as committed to the work involved. We were new to this blog when you and your friend were moving in with her mother. Did you make that move for the purpose of helping out her mother? If so, you have some leverage there. Just sayin’.

The Dog Whisperer has pointed out that it is not our kind, but the two-leggeds that need the training. However, in watching The Dog Whisper series on DVD, we have seen, that he too, has been bitten on occasion by a particularly unruly student. He says we sometimes assume the role of Pack Leader and tell our so called Masters how to behave instead of the other way around. Personally, I think it should be a matter of mutual respect on both sides, not dominance by one or the other.

Also, given Beau’s previous life, it is a safe bet that he was never properly “house-broken”. (we hate that term) It takes a very long time for us to understand that concept, no matter what age we are when our humans try to teach it to us.

Rio – this one may be gong out on a limb, but here goes…
is there any way that Beau can go to your friend’s busy place with her? Many employers are more understanding about 4 kegged family these days, and maybe, just maybe if it was explained that your friend was trying to save a life….

Rio, We feel so bad for your friend and Beau. You are getting a lot of good advice today from everyone. We agree that he probably was never properly educated about house manners when he was a puppy. It is harder to do this training as an adult dog, but with proper guidance he could learn. Unfortunatley you have limited possibilities because of his bitting issues, thus no homes with kids.

A good housebreaking idea is supposed to be to keep the dog tethered to the person at all times, and then take him out frequently. Doesn’t seem like something your mother could/would do, however.

If he has to go, it seems like a foster thru Pug Rescue would be the best for him. Fingers and paws crossed here.

We forgot to say: Welcome Home Melanie!

Rose: Forgot to say how happy we were to see The Artist winning Best Picture and Jean Dujardin…Best Actor. We have yet to see the film since the closest theater is on Whidbey Island. And, with only one showing…7:30 pm…too late for winter-time travel.

Siber: I followed your instructions to find the adn link, and found the story, but didn’t see the video. That is some story Karen and her handler had to tell!
Here’s a link to another tale of a moose encounter, which some of you may have already seen. It happened last month to a elderly husband and wife at the Willow Airport. http://www.adn.com/2012/01/22/2277726/wife-stops-moose-stomping-with.html

Masquers: I was skipping and twirling when I heard the Oscar results for “The Artist.” I think Berenice Bejo was cheated out of the Oscar. She played a very important role in the film, and is a beautiful and excellent actress. The Weinstein company will be opening the film this Friday on more screens. Hope you are able to see it.

Rio: I am very sad for your friend. Stay close and take good care of her.

Masquers, Dawson posted a link to the video earlier today.

Siber, Karen Ramstead does NOT have to scratch the one-eyed Irv who was hurt by the moose. She said that although she saw the ‘Anchorage Daily News this morning which read “Injury eliminates hard-luck Irving from team’, but it seems Irving didn’t.’
The vet had her run him on a couple of shorter runs this week, and he did well, When she reexamined him, she said nothing remains that would exclude him from running Iditarod.

Masquers, Dawson’s link on page one of this blog works for that video. Clink on her link and the video will be right there in your face.
I see the problem now…No where in the title of the video does it mention Karen’s name. It says “Meet the Sled Dogs”

Sibers, Thanks for directing me back to page one and Dawson’s link. I loved seeing and hearing about Karen’s team. Irving named after the drummer in the fictitious rock band…the Mosquitoes…too funny!

Rio: can Beau be kenneled during the day with his favorite blanket, toys and treats? Then he can be leashed and taken outside when your friend gets home. Once he has done his business (and been extravagantly praised for it), he should be good to be indoors for a while. Remember my friend who consulted a pet psychic? What I didn’t tell you is that it was a phone consultation and my friend had just sent in a digital photo of the dog to the psychic. She wanted the dog near the phone and at the end wanted to talk just to the dog. I can’t remember if my friend put her phone on “speaker” or held the phone up to her dog. Anyway, you might try something like that. One of the plunderers just had a pet psychic experience and maybe could email you the information. I feel for all of you including your friend’s mom. A pet with peeing problems can drive you insane. Consulting a vet might be useful too.

Home!…When my friend came home after the busy place and after working out there was no one in the house to greet her…sniff!….She thought her mother had hauled us off to the pound or sumthing…heh!heh!….We were outside telling those kids next door what is what. In return they were throwing pine cones at me and Beau…grunt!….Damned kids!…grrrrufff!

SOL!….Beau is still very high on the SOL list, but at least no mention of him leaving for good was talked about tonight….sniff!….Until he had to go outside. Instead of going out in the yard he decided to piss on the patio door….grunt!….Tipped her mother right over the edge again. So we are all downstairs hiding and watching An Idiot Abroad in Africa….snort!

Package!… A slender package arrived today in the mail for my friend….snort!… It really cheered her up when she opened it. She told me to thank the parties involved in this nice surprise. What great timing too!….chorkel! ….She will write a proper Thank You tomorrow because lately our computer here at home is having trouble when we open up Yahoo….grumble!

Well, hellooooo blog. We had three days to catch up on and it took us awhile. So here goes…

Dawson, ask our grandma what it is like when someone (ahemmom) puts their Mr. Potato Head potato in the back of the closet for safekeeping. A lot like when she put a “pot” of beans on to soak in her little metal oven and forgot about them. Ack And mom was glad to see that with 5 girls and 6 boys there were 11 dog teams, because mushing without dogs is not much fun, heh heh.

Bear, we have a hand drawn calligraphy family tree that goes back to the 1400’s. Mom’s copy (which is not a copy, but one done specially for her) only goes back to the late 1600’s.

We can hear Jasper in that picture thinking “I can’t feel my teef, and my wips are numb.”

Staff, the bookstore where mom met Spence is called “Murder By the Book”. Quite cozy.

The howlers get beer after a run? Moderation guys, moderation!
And on a related note, the four-keggeds would be quite a tipsy bunch.

CHarris–unbelievably beautiful. We are so jealous. We got 18 snowflakes last week. sigh

K, thnx, think we are caught up now. Except Power of Positive Paws to Wolfie’s family.

Rio, We were thinking about the crate idea too, just as a training tool, till he gets used to going outside. Then taking him outside, on leash, to a designated spot each time to do his business. Since most dogs will get into a routine, you probably would not have to do this ridgid schedule for very long.

Hope to get some good updates from Melanie tomorrow, on all the parties and the Jersey girls.

Barb’s coworker still has a sick kid, so Barb is working part of the day tomorrow. CL has called twice tonight, because she couldn’t figure out how to respond to an email.

Barb has an appointment tomorrow with the accountant, and she told CL she would not cancel it. Lordy, the office will be closed for 2-3 hours, because CL won’t go in and answer the phones.

Night all, see you some time tomorrow.

Crate!… Beau came with a pile of stuff and one big cage type thing….sniff!… It is quite roomy, but there is no way her or her mother would lock him innit for the day….snort!… Just getting him to go in would be a miracle to begin with. I’m not sure even treats would work. The effort and work involved with taking Beau outside on a Leash (remember his harness issues) would be too much for her mother and if my friend only does this on weekends, there really is no point….grunt!….He wouldn ‘t understand what was going on…sniff!
