Congratulations to Shakira and Pals and to Lucy Lou (Huntress Extraordinaire)

When we two legged were just pups, the whole family would go visit my Grandmother (the one I’m named for) in the mountains of North Carolina. For some reason, the Raven thought it would be great for us to learn how to catch and kill rattlesnakes.

We did get one. Grandmother was pleased. We had to go to the edges of her domain to do it. The two COTTONMOUTHS were easy to get and kill as they were on the porch under a basket. Scared the Dog right out of us!

Did not know there was a vaccine for dogs. We have not rattlers here, nor cottonmouths. Our big snakes are garter snakes.

    Mom’s experiences with rattlesnakes:

Many times while walking in the desert just at dawn, the rattlesnakes come out onto the dirt tracks to sun themselves. Mom just walked the dog around them….no problems. The snakes didn’t seem to mind. Not one ever rattled a warning.

A long time ago Mom’s female GSD killed a rattlesnake in the yard that was up by the house. The dog was not bit.

We know a man who lost half his leg to a rattlesnake bite.

They have a rattlesnake hunt in this state every year, which is STUPID. The idiot that kills the most rattlesnkes wins.

  29. Siber-H

In answer to Spence’s question, yes, we know people here that get the rattlesnake vaccine for their dogs. These are the kind of well-meaning people that go hiking and let their dogs run loose. Mom is not going to get me any unnecessary vaccines because I am not going to be off leash. (That’ll be the day)

Rio, thanks for posting. Thankfully, we do not use any of those foods or treats, but Mom did throw away a really really delicious treat she bought us last week, after she had read of recalls of simlar treats by the same company. Oleys, we are back, but don’t know what we can contribute regarding the bedding. Never used sand, just went from cloth and paper towels to shavings. Barb, the sand is working great in the brooder box. But we are still not sure if we want to go that way for the coop when the go out there. Do you think it would be cold in winter? We read that comment from some folks online. Of course, none of them who said that had actually tried sand.
We have lots and lots of wood shavings around here, because we use it in the horse stalls, so that would be cheaper. But how on earth do you “pick” chicken poop in that?

    6:08 pm on June 19th, 2013

We love Major Crimes. The new season just started. TNT has some good ones. Rozolli and Isles new season starts next Tuesday. It is a hoot.

Dog food and cat food should NOT be composted for an edible garden. Only poop from farm animal type critters.

Oleys, not sure anyone else on the blog is interested in sand vs shavings, but here goes in as few a words as possible:

Would not use sand in the permanet coop. Go with shavings or straw. You don’t try to pick it as you pick a horse stall. Just add more shavings or straw on top (just enough to give you a clean surface). Continue to do that till spring, then have someone come in and clean the whole thing out, taking it all to a compost heap. The layering will give them extra warmth during the winter months and acts as insulation on the floor. We did ours twice a year, but we had about 28 chickens. Barb had two teenagers that came over and hauled everything out with wheelbarrows and a little skid loader. Our coop was 8 x 24 (192 square feet) and they could do it in about 2 hours (they charged $50). With 7 hens, it will not get smelly and yucky.
Oh, and occasionally when they are shut in, give them a leaf of hay – they LOVE alfalfa hay – and after they finish scratching it around and having a ball, it will contribute to the bedding.

  66. Barb & Maggie
    6:14 pm on June 19th, 2013

One more thing – Gah, will she ever quit! We liked to use straw sometimes as it will create a more neutral compost than the shaving which are pine and will be more acidic. Ok, we are done!

Exploding hair . . I can understand that.

HOH, the compost thing for dog poo is a large container with holes in it that sits down in the ground. The dog poo goes in there and then slowly decomposes out into the lawn.

Hmmm. That’s why it wouldn’t work here. Four months of the year it would be covered with three feet of snow. And I’d have to have 5 of the containers to deal with the amount of poo.

Close! And, here we are with all our money tied up in chocolate. We recieced a not-so-sizeable loan from Luna—it is borrowed against future winnings—and got the Giant one of his favorite candy bars for Father’s Day. It was a king size chocolate bar. We spared no expense, not for our guy.

OK – so first off, thanks from Gramp for the birthday shout outs. We think he had a good time.
Mama got him his favorite cake – an Italian Fruit cake – nothing like the hard as a rock Christmas type, and roasted a leg of lamb (or was it a Marauding Goat). We put “Wahoo – 82!” on the cake – he thought that was a riot. A good time was had by all – even though Aunt Disease-of-the-Week, and Uncle Ichabod Goofball came for dinner. Yes, they are here from Florida, and we could only duck them for just so long.
The funny part was when Aunt started complaining about the pain in her leg and her sore shoulder and her aching eyebrows, the Storyteller said that he had kind of a tough winter too – then he lifted his shirt and showed off his “mauled by a bear” scars from the back surgery.
She didn’t have too much to say after that.
    Go figure.

Dawson got distracted by me and forgot about the game. Luckily Mollypop’s Mom mentioned it and she is now sitting in front of the TV. She had a slight problem finding the game because she kept looking for it on cable and it is on the regular NBC. We called Mr.Staff and he told us where to look (and said she was missing a great game).

She is cackling away in there now.

She was really PO’d there for a while.
