Screenplay (More)

“Given any thought to who could play some of the roles in Dog On It?” says Spence.

“Nope,” says Admin.

“But isn’t that part of the fun of writing screenplays?”

“Fun?”

“For example, wouldn’t a younger Jeff Bridges be great as Bernie?”

“How does he get younger, exactly?”

“Special effects,” says Spence. “You liked Crazy Heart.”

“Uh-huh. What was that Ryan Bingham song?”

“‘The Weary Kind.'”

“Good song. Should we say something about Lucian Freud?”

“R. I. P.”

“Not much peace in his paintings.”

“Doesn’t stop them from being great.”

“Cheers.”

“Back at ya.”

Welcome Cat Observers.

Good morning, y’all! I think Macy’s right; I would be a good Iggy. I could get used to that Hollywood life. Limos and caviar. Oh, wait. Caviar is fish eggs. Maybe not.

    Good Morning Everyone!

Love that the blog background is now the cover for TDWKTM!
Hmmmm….Thinking about actors for the film.

    Stay cool!!!!!

Gerard Butler as Bernie!! Yes!!! (And he can put on a very good American accent.)

The blog background that I have is still from TFAT.

    Good morning all.

    Good morning y’all. Hey Kirby!

Kirby, I can live that good life to the fullest – just as the big star that I will be. I eat everything so pass me the caviar please. I think I’m the only four-legged here on the blog who has eaten Wolfie’s toffee.

OIC, we had never noticed a background before. Now that top bit, where we only see a bit of Chet, is great. Less is more.

Green!…The title of the Blog is now in green…sniff!…But the rest is all very dark like it used to be when I first found this place…grunt! ….We need an actor with right shape of head to match Bernie’s….heh! …and dark hair of course. A young Kevin Spacey would be perfect…heh!

    Hey Guys!

Yes, I have the new background. CHET: A Dog’s Life is written out in green. You can see a bit of Bernie on the lower left, a bit of Suzie on the lower right, one of Chet’s legs, and his tail.

Kirby: I do believe Rio was eyeing the part of Iggy.

Well, I had to do some homework this morning. Looked up “Crazy Heart”; I’ve never seen it. Netflix has it on DVD. That should be coming in soon!

Now listening to the theme song. Wonderful.

Looked up Lucian Freud. Nice obit in the “The Economist”. Then I hit images. Wow, talk about stark reality. Very good and very unsettling.

B.Stover: I also did some homework on “Frankenstein” and the idea of Prometheus. I had some ideas this morning and will try to write later.

Time to go pick up Jesse. He is doing INSIDE work today!

OK, I just went back to “Dog On It” to see who would be a better Iggy: me or Rio. I’m thinking Hollywood isn’t in my future after all. First of all, Iggy has a “high-pitched bark, an irritated-sounding yip-yip-yip.” I don’t do that, but I could learn my lines for the movie, so that isn’t the problem. Here’s the problem: “He (Iggy) spotted me and started jumping up and down in that weird way of his, his fat jowls wobbling in the opposite direction of every leap.” No fat jowls here, and I’m not sure even Hollywood could fix that!

Good Grief! Are we late this morning or what?
It was mostly due to reading all last night’s posts about Frankenstein – so interesting! Siber-H is right. Somehow the name has come to mean the monster, and not the doctor who created him, although Dr. F. could easily fit our definition of “monster” – as in “any very cruel or wicked person”. As for the Creature – we have always sympathized with him – wandering the world friendless and misunderstood, through no fault of his own.

Tupper&Gilly: Hey! This is the Royal Mum’s big day! Cape Cod and autographs – yay!

Barb&Maggie: We saw Winter’s Bone too and agree – it was a dismal story. Nana watched it because the lead actress was up for an Academy Award for the part. You might try Cape of Good Hope for a little lighter fare.

Rio & Kirby: Why not screen test for the part of Iggy? Question: Do either of you jump and bark with such frequency? Just an observation…Don’t want to step on any tails here.

    Good morning, all.

Lots of much needed rain here. We are now in the first stages of drought, according to the weather people. Not good for all the Illinois farmers out there growing corn.

We like Robert Downey Jr, and Kevin S. a lot, however, can’t picture either as Bernie. Needs to be someone more chunky and burly. Admin’s suggestion of a younger Jeff Bridges would be perfect, but can’t think of anyone else off hand.

Oh, how about Dean Caine, he is chunky?

Nana, Will put Cape on our list at Netflix.

Barb watched Winter’s Bones because she has a Missouri cousin who is doing time, breaking rocks in the hot sun, for drug trafficking. He is a son of Barb’s mom’s younger brother. Family was devout Church of the Nazireene (sp?). Conservative, no drinking, smoking, makeup, dancing or card playing. What eles was left but starting your own meth lab on the old family farm! Got caught by the pant leg, and sent off to serve about 10 years at the big house.

The movie, however, portrayed a different level of poverty and lifestyle than what Barb’s family experienced. They were not poor, and there was no reason for his druggy behavior. Broke Uncle Maurice’s heart. Goes to see him every month and hopes he will be changed when he gets released.

I still think the best scene of dog jowls was in “Turner and Hooch,” the movie with Tom Hanks playing a police officer who adopts a dog named Hooch when Hooch’s owner is murdered. There’s a slow-motion shot of Hooch running down the dock with jowls flopping and drool flying — totally cool!!!

  31. Kirby T. Penworthy

  36. Barb & Maggie

You guys are cracking me up.

    What does OIC mean?

I don’t think that medicine had advanced to performing lobotomies when Shelley wrote Frankenstein. (First published in 1818.) However, an idea that was prevalent then was physiognomy which is mentioned in the novel. It is the belief that a person’s character can be determined by his appearance. The first reason for Frankenstein’s fear of the creature (this is when the creature first opens his eyes) is his appearance. (It’s on page 39 of the Oxford World Classics paperback edition…Chapter IV of Book One.) That is one of the reasons that I dislike Dr. Frankenstein. (He judges his two Natural Philosophy professors on appearance when he first meets them as well.) Another interesting thing is that F keeps using the same and similar words to describe the creature and Elizabeth (his cousin and the woman he is supposed to marry). Fun!

I now have the Dog Who cover art for the blog.

  39. BearSpiritDog
    10:55 am on July 22nd, 2011

Bar&Maggie: Yes, a young Brian Dennehy certainly would have had the physique for the part of Bernie. Most of these guys that could have filled the role are now too old.

  40. Barb & Maggie
    10:58 am on July 22nd, 2011

We are completely in the dark about the cotton balls. Please splain. Where did OIC come from?

  41. Melanie
    10:58 am on July 22nd, 2011

B.Stover and anyone else interested: First, which myth are the people talking about? Prometueus’s role changes from the 8th-century BC Greek poet Hesiod through Aeschylus’s 5th-century BC tragedy and even on through the 4th-century BC Greek and Roman authors.

I am going to be fussy and take the following approach. Prometheus tricked Zeus into deciding to take bones for sacrifice rather than meat. Zeus got mad and took fire away from humans (at this point only men). Prometheus steals it back. Zeus makes Pandora out of clay sends her down to mortals with her jar of little horrors. That gets opened up (and dog, haven’t they blamed women ever since [snicker]) and everything gets loose except for hope. He also chains Prometheus to a rock and has an eagle eat out his liver. Every day.

I would like to say here, that I’m glad I wasn’t an ancient Greek.

So what makes “Frankenstein” a modern Prometheus?

Get back to it in a minute or two. Zoë has come back from hunting and we must put the groceries away.

  42. B.Stover
    11:00 am on July 22nd, 2011

Macy used OIC in her 9:36 AM post today. Gerard Butler is just the right age.

One thing we know about the “modern Prometheus” is that is he not immortal.

  43. Barb & Maggie
    11:04 am on July 22nd, 2011

Thanks Bee. Have no idea what it means.

Gerald Butler would be good. Still like Dean Caine. Anyone else like him?

  44. B.Stover
    11:05 am on July 22nd, 2011

Melanie: (Love it!!) Mary Shelley is writing in the “Romantic Period” and for the Romantics, Prometheus represents a rebel against the establishment which is represented by Zeus. (That is not to say that Mary Shelley believed in this Romantic idea.)

  45. Mollypop
    11:08 am on July 22nd, 2011

My guess: OIC = oh I see

  46. Melanie
    11:10 am on July 22nd, 2011

Yes, B. Stover: I think you’re right on that. We also can’t forget that Shelley was writing during a time where she was shunned and ostracized for having an affair and a child with a married man. (Percy Shelley) Though she did marry him after his wife committed suicide, I imagine this had an effect on her novel.

  47. Masquers
    11:12 am on July 22nd, 2011

B: Both Dr.Frankenstein and Prometheus defied God/the gods and were punished for it. Peometheus stole the knowledge of fire and the doctor wanted to steal the secrets of creating life.

  50. B.Stover
    11:23 am on July 22nd, 2011

So is Mary Shelley being pro-establishment in punishing Frankenstein and in making the reader sympathetic toward the creature?

Frankenstein is creating life without the “help” of a woman. Mary Shelley’s mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, died shortly after giving birth to Mary. Mary Shelley had…I think…three infants who died until finally having a son who lived. (Some of these things occurred after she wrote F. Percy died in 1822 by drowning in a boating accident.) These are real questions by the way….I don’t have answers.

  51. Melanie
    11:23 am on July 22nd, 2011

There is the connection with Prometheus with his rebelling against Zeus, mankind’s creator, and Frankenstein’s monster who rebells against Dr. Frankenstein.

There is also the connection of Pandora. At the end of the novel, the monster wants Dr. Frankenstein to make him a female companion. Dr. Frankenstein at first agrees because the monster threatens his family. A family, friends and love that the monster can not have . . .

But Dr. Frankenstein destroys her. And the monster then murders the Doctor’s friend and then the Doctor’s bride.

All is let loose from the jar at this point. (Pandora theme) Hope remains out of reach.

As Zeus the Doctor has chained the monster to a rock where he is tortured everyday. The rock could be life and his torture to not have companionship.

Well, my brain just went dead. Too hot! Maybe more later.

I am not going because: of the whatever I have, I REALLY don’t do well in humidity and heat, I wasn’t invited (snicker) and if I had been, wouldn’t have gone anyway because the Royals’ Mum and Dad work their patooties off and I’m too lazy!!

  54. BearSpiritDog
    11:30 am on July 22nd, 2011

Barb&Maggie: Both Dean Cain & Gerald Butler seem too “nice” for the part. Bernie tends to get tough in certain situations and has a big guy attitude. B. Dennehy is more our idea of Bernie’s size but, again, too old.

  55. B.Stover
    11:32 am on July 22nd, 2011

So Melanie, you’re suggesting that the creature represents Prometheus. I like it. There is the “fact” that P was a Titan–second generation…the gods before the Olympians (meaning Zeus). This may be getting into too much detail but it may also be important to a definition of the modern P. Pondering….

We all love the idea of a young Brien Dennehy but oh well…kind of hard to do without a time machine. We don’t know a lo about movie actors but what about the guy who plays Seeley on Bones? Or Mark Harmon from NCIS? They can both do taciturn and dry humor and be menacing without looking like criminals themselves

I don’t know about Bernie, but when I think of Damon Keefer I picture Dan Hedaya, who played Carla’s first husband on Cheers. He has that slimy kind of attitude that makes you go “ugh.” Hedaya also played Richard Nixon — see, what did I tell you — slimy!

If the role of Bernie can’t be played by YSAS, surely there is another role for YSAS. He has a following of loyal, Plunderering fans—all he needs now is a break.

Speaking of filming, AJ and I need to film our five minute video for the casting call. It’s now or never because he’s leaving again for another week.

KirbyT: Don’t know about a Russian accent, but I bet he could. Let me tell you a story.
YASA was in a Serbian movie about 3 women who come to the US. ( Still hasn’t been released yet; supposedly in September). Anyhoo, a lot of the movie is in Serbian and YSAS (an Irish American bartender) has to run down a list of Serbian words he knows. Before the movie started rehearsing, he went to the Serbian Consulate in NYC and asked for help. A BEAUTIFUL Serbian woman helped him with the words, the pronunciation and meaning. Snicker . . . one of the guards kept inching forward to listen to what was going on, and when the woman wouldn’t say what the word meant the guard was glad to say it right out loud! (not for polite society)

YSAS taped all of it. Used the tape to memorize all the words . . .
Rehearsal for that scene came up and the director started to pause so he could help YSAS do the words, and YSAS just rattles them off with a perfect accent!

    He brought the house down!

Oh good dog! Mama and Dad just checked into their room at the hotel. They got here earlier but their room wasn’t ready yet. Mama was very polite about it and said not to worry- they would go get lunch and look around the town – find the show site etc.
They just got back to the hotel and waited their turn behind a VERY rude tourist who was being demanding. She finally left and Mama told the desk clerk she was so sorry that she had to be treated that way and congratulated the clerk for remaining professional and courteous. Then Mama asked if her room was ready. The clerk said just a moment and did something with the paperwork. Then she gave Mama the keys and they went to their room. Only now their roomwas a SUITE! With a living room area, a kitchen, bedroom and large bath. And looks right out over the harbor.
What a great start to what she hopes will be a great weekend!

Another vote for YSAS. The dude who plays Bernie must be a dog person. YSAS is a dog person. People can be fooled with great acting but dogs always know if they are dealing with a true dog person or someone who is acting the part.

Way to go T&G! When Mom and Dad got married they went to Disney World for part of their honeymoon. They must have looked totally in love, because the desk clerk asked if they were on their honeymoon. When they said yes, he not only upgraded their room to one in the tower, but the hotel sent up a bottle of champagne!!! (Mom and Dad don’t drink champagne, but that’s beside the point!)

Wait a minute you guys – didn’t Spence mention that the screenplay might take into account when and how Bernie and Chet first met? We know YSAS personally and we have seen him act in a variety of personas – he could play any age, any type – but he could absolutely play younger Bernie!

Earlier someone asked why we have extension cords all over the house. It is because our battery powered backup electrical system isn’t working. And the outlets that it is supposed to back up are out of commission. All the important stuff like the refrigerator, the freezer, the upstairs air conditioner, the sump pump, washer and dryer and stove are on the backup system.

First I got my air conditioner running. Then the fridge and freezer. Then the router and dsl. GOTTA have my internet.

The stove, well I am not turning on the oven in this heat! All the rest will wait until the guy comes to fix things. It is sort of hard in the bathrooms as neither of those are considered essential. HAH!
