Science Marches On!
How the nation within and the nation without first got together.
Sort of.

Good morning, everyone! Having lived with a “wolf hybrid” we can tell y’all that they are smart. Don’t know where chihuahuas fit, but mom cared for her grandma’s chihuahua for 2 years after Jonsie passed. Dog was meaner than anything! The wolf was precious in comparison. Welcome home Barb. Loved fotos yesterday. Melanie, washing walls because of “multi-dog mudding events”.
9:21 am on November 18th, 2013
The photos are interesting. I like the last one best.
Good morning all.
9:26 am on November 18th, 2013
Good morning. Why aren’t the Members of the Nation Within conducting our own study to determine when we first domesticated our 2-leggeds?
Can’t wait to hear from barb about her trip home last evening.
Nana breaks out today!!!!! Who is helping her? All 4 of us volunteered for this mission.
9:30 am on November 18th, 2013
The HOH is ready and waiting for Nana detail.
9:49 am on November 18th, 2013
Wait, I’m domesticated? When did that happen?
AnyWoof. By Nana’s side disguised as a chair. Who else is coming?
9:51 am on November 18th, 2013
Good morning all.
Masquers personally invited us to help with the Great Nana Breakout, so we will be there to do whatever needs be done.
Maybe we will need to provide a distraction – hmmmm….should we chase people’s feet in fuzzy slipppers? Look winsomely cute and purr like motorboats? Or do the “ack, ack, ack – splort” thing with hairballs. Decisions, decisions…..

Barb is finally home. Yea! The day of travel was long and stressful. Weather in Texas was beautiful, as usual. Car picked her up with Kelly and Chad at 11:00 and they got to the airport with no problems. They had been hearing about severe storms, but when the got to the airport they were told the flight was canceled. The agent discussed different options (DC, Nashville) eventually they ended up in Tulsa where they walked back and forth between American and United gates to try to get a flight. Eventually they got on a little American plane and had a very bumpy ride to Chicago. The lady across from Barb asked her to come sit with her so she “didn’t have to die alone”! By the time she got in the car coming home she was starting to feel really sick- air plane germs, stress? Finally arrived home last night, very tired and very sick. Thank you Mary Lou for checking on us.
Our house was fine and I was fine too. I am not really afraid of storms. It was Eric the Evil carpenter that sent me to hide behind the shower curtain. Lisa the dog sitter said she spent some extra time with me just in case. Our area was spared for the most part. Patio furniture and grill were blown out into the yard and neighbor’s tree came down toward our house, but didn’t damage anything. Most of the severe weather was central and southern Illinois. Some entire towns almost destroyed. We were lucky here.
The meet and greet was wonderful! So much fun. Karen took time out of her busy schedule to fly in Friday night for the meeting. She and her sister picked up Barb at the hotel. Linda was so friendly and easy to talk to. Marylou and Rick arrived just a few minutes later. They talked for hours (yes they mentioned Rio). Belle waited in the car till they finished eating and then joined them on the square. What a wonderful group of friends we have on the blog. It is truly something special and unique, and we are honored to be part of it.
Going to go lay on the sofa for a bit…Barb can hardly move today!
9:56 am on November 18th, 2013
Thanks for the update, Maggie. Glad you were o.k. Are you in the northern part of the state?
Poor Barb. Mom hates flying. If this would have happened to her, she would have hyperventilated.
10:27 am on November 18th, 2013
Franklin!!!! Glad to know our disguises are working. Dima is the robe hanging on Nana’s door. Meashka is the the sofa in the visitors room. Kat is the trashcan next to the bed. T.C. Is mixed in with all of Nana’s cute stuffedies.
10:33 am on November 18th, 2013
Aww come on – why do WE always have to be the footstools?
10:48 am on November 18th, 2013
Glad we are back online for the Great Break Out. We will be on and off today as Barb is spending most of the day on the sofa in a horizontal position.
Yes, we are northern Illinois, about 15 miles from the WI border. I don’t think there were tornado sighting this far north, just high winds.
10:51 am on November 18th, 2013
T&G, How do you think it feels for a Sibe to have to hang around? š
11:56 am on November 18th, 2013
Where did everybody go???? Is my humor too sophisticated?
12:04 pm on November 18th, 2013
Dima: Your humor hasn’t been lost. Mom is a couch potato today. You keep up the ingognito robe. If y’all need the HOH, to be doilies or (dog forbid) dust bunnies, let us know.
12:07 pm on November 18th, 2013
Barb&Maggie, Great report and glad you had a good time…rest now.
Dima, LOL
They change their minds every few years about how, where, and when dogs decided to live with humans.
12:11 pm on November 18th, 2013
Perhaps the Big Bark two leggeds have it wrong.
I know the Pack have trained me well.
ZoĆ« bought the Newf Tree Topper. I’ll post a pic when I can find it again.
12:14 pm on November 18th, 2013
That was quick on my part.
We are getting it painted a gold color.
12:18 pm on November 18th, 2013
I love that tree topper, Melanie!
12:42 pm on November 18th, 2013
Wow! Love the tree topper. It speaks to us, ruff!
12:43 pm on November 18th, 2013
Super cool tree topper, Melanie!! Perfect for your household.
Wonder how the break-out is going? It takes FOREVER to process paperwork! Hang in there, NanaBarb! Home is close.
12:51 pm on November 18th, 2013
Boo, we were just thinking the same thing… 10 o’clock west coast. Paws crossed that all goes well,
12:56 pm on November 18th, 2013
Greetings!
I am so excited that Nana is coming home today!!! I think Pancho and Lefty are scheduled to pick the locks to Nana ‘s room.
BooBear: Loved your mom’s passport and all the photos! Your stamp is way cool.
Maggie: Glad you are safe and sound, and that Barb made it home to you. I hope she is feeling better soon.
Melanie: Cool tree topper!
12:59 pm on November 18th, 2013
Belle, waiting for service. Not even a bowl of water?

1:02 pm on November 18th, 2013
O’Howlers: I like your suggestion that the nation within should conduct their own scientific study – who domesticated the 2 footed first.
Melanie: Wonderful tree topper.
Zen Cat’s Healing Prayer (from June 26, 2011 post):
May the joy, love and compassion of the healing heart
bring peace and health to all sentient beings.
Everyone is position for the Great Breakout? Good! Now hold those positions for for 3 or 4 hours because it’s only 10 o clock at the rehab center!
Time enough for me to go to my dentist appointment.
1:03 pm on November 18th, 2013
Does anyone know if i need a passport to get into Canada? If so, will they accept my Plunderer passport?
1:07 pm on November 18th, 2013
Kat§ Since 9/11 we think they prefer the real deal. Just saying…
1:09 pm on November 18th, 2013
Dawson, now who has too much time on her hands?
1:10 pm on November 18th, 2013
Kat: You need a passport or “equivalent”. Equivalent can be an “enhanced” driver’s license or a Nexus card.
1:18 pm on November 18th, 2013
OK this is twice. What is an “enhanced”driver’s license or a Nexus card?
1:19 pm on November 18th, 2013
Speaking of angels: Zen Cat is up top, next to a dog named Calamity. I hope Masquers can settle that Calamity down.
1:28 pm on November 18th, 2013
An enhanced driver’s license has sufficient background checks to get into Canada and back. A passport works too.
Kat, you need to have proof your rabies shot is up to date. It’s best to have it on a sheet of paper to hand to the customs official.
1:29 pm on November 18th, 2013
Kat, You do not need to go into Canada to break Nana out of the joint and get her back home. However, it would be a scenic trip if you want to do it.
1:32 pm on November 18th, 2013
So,the average joe,
Doesn’t stand a chance?
Am we allies with Canada or?
What?
1:36 pm on November 18th, 2013
Kat, Nana is going to want to go straight home. You can then run off and visit Canada if you wish.
1:44 pm on November 18th, 2013
HOH: Prior to Sept 11, 2001, you could get across the border with a credit card and a nice personality. Since then, the rules have changed and I think the US Homeland Security Act rules guide the Canadian Border services.
1:52 pm on November 18th, 2013
Wow, scary!
1:53 pm on November 18th, 2013
Canada is one of the easiest borders to cross. Just look the guard in the eye and smile while showing your license or passport.
2:33 pm on November 18th, 2013
Remember the movie “Canadian Bacon”?
Do not cross the border like that.
I was going to add something else, but as I can not remember it, it must be time for a nap.
2:56 pm on November 18th, 2013
So, Princess Sam: I do not need a passport, just a rabies certificate? Would my rabies medal on my travel collar suffice? If the Spring Plunderer meet involves Niagra Falls, I don’t want to be left behind when Mom goes over to the Canadian side.
2:56 pm on November 18th, 2013
We are with you on that idea Melanie. Just got up to check the blog and see if Nana has been sprung yet. Now, back to the sofa. Can’t really fall asleep due to the constant coughing. This is not fun!
3:00 pm on November 18th, 2013
Maggie, Tell Barb that I have this under control. They are giving Nana a hard time, and I am barking ferociously. They are so confused by a barking trash can, the Thieves and Franklin should be able to easily sashay Nana on out of here.
3:13 pm on November 18th, 2013
Macy, I love that picture of Belle! Mom said that she was such a sweetie.
3:22 pm on November 18th, 2013
Do I need this shirt? Maybe with a little bling added.
3:32 pm on November 18th, 2013
My Dear Niece Kat, the customs official is not going to reach into a car to read a dog’s tag. Too dangerous. They prefer to see a piece of paper and your ‘rents got that when you got your shot.
However, when we all go to Niagara Falls, Loulou will go to Smooches for Pooches and you could go too. She loves it there!
4:18 pm on November 18th, 2013
Wow, min pin!
5:02 pm on November 18th, 2013
Numb! Confounded!
I should’a had a four-legged with me to grab that suppose-ed dentist by the pant leg. He hurt me! How bad, I will figure out once the freezing wears off.
The Senior’s movie (which I am missing) today is titled, Escape which is what Nana is probably doing right now and what I should’ve done about 10 minutes into that dentist appointment.
Now I’m going to lay down and hope to escape into a little nap.
5:15 pm on November 18th, 2013
Waiting for the Getaway Car.
BSD, Masquers & Gang.
5:27 pm on November 18th, 2013
Masquers – ve vill be there in minutes. Porsche is gassed, reved and ready to visk all of you HOME!
Siber – move over – Nana get to sit in front. Make sure getting no hot ving sauce on back seat this time.
5:30 pm on November 18th, 2013
Woo Hoo, Franklin says he has changed from the chair and now is the wheelchair. Heis getting his feet ready to go!
6:18 pm on November 18th, 2013
Wow, I have been busy with Quilting yesterday. Then I had to get up early to go to the big city, Fargo, with Mr.Staff ’cause he had to go to a tax class from 9 to noon. Then we went to see my kidney dr. Then we came home and I have been reading reading reading the blog ever since. I can’t believe I didn’t read it yesterday at all! That has not happened since my transplant days.
Nana not out yet, but soon I hope.
Melanie welcome back.
I am so sorry to hear about Cody. I hope there is some successful help for them all.
I am moving this week and you spring an auction on me! Jeez Louise! Hopefully I will find something to put up. sniff
6:58 pm on November 18th, 2013
Sorry to be such party poopers here. Barb is feeling worse as the day goes on. Getting some cough syrup to go with the Dayquil and NightQuil. Barb’s sister in law who is in the medical field said to put some Vicks on the bottom of her feet and then put on socks and keep them on overnight. Has anyone ever done that?
Staff are you moving back to Minneapolis for the tax season?
Hope all is going well with Nana. Now back to the sofa.
7:56 pm on November 18th, 2013
Barb & MagPie, I have never tried that. Let me know how it goes . .
Staff, Good to be back.
Haven’t heard from Franklin lately.
8:02 pm on November 18th, 2013
Will let you know Melanie.
Now off to bed for the night. Hope to be back to normal tomorrow. Or close, anyway!
8:07 pm on November 18th, 2013
A friend swears by this cold/cough remedy:
Preparations. In the evening before going to bed, prepare by having a pair of cotton socks and a pair of wool socks. They must be at least 90% cotton and 90% wool, respectively.
Step 1. Soak the foot part of the cotton socks in cold tap water and wring them out thoroughly. Place the socks close to the basin or bathtub used in the next step. Note: If your feet are already warm (e.g., you have already been in bed) you can skip to Step 3.
Step 2. Put your feet into a basin or bathtub of hot water to warm up your feet. Soak them for a few minutes until they are hot and pink.
Step 3. Remove your feet from the hot water and quickly dry them off. Immediately put on the cold wet cotton socks, and then over them, put on the dry wool socks.
Step 4. Go directly to bed and keep the feet covered through the night. The therapy does not work if you or your feet are uncovered, such as when walking around or sitting in a chair uncovered.
When the Cold Sock Treatment procedure is followed correctly the feet will start warming up within a few minutes of getting covered in bed. The congestion will usually start to be relieved within 30 minutes. It will often work better than a decongestant or antihistamine to relieve congestion during sleep. In addition, it is not uncommon to see a small child or infant fall immediately to sleep after they are put to bed with the Cold Sock Treatment. After approximately four hours the socks should be totally dry, the feet warm, and the symptoms will be much improved (if not gone).
8:12 pm on November 18th, 2013
Barb!…Sick?…sniff!…Sounds like she DID NOT take an Airborne like I have been preaching on this blog for years…grunt!…No one listens to me, why do I even try?…grumble!
8:13 pm on November 18th, 2013
Goodness the cold sock treatment sounds, well, weird. Just my opinion. I don’t suppose I will ever know if it works because I will never ever put cold wet socks on my feet. Even wool ones. I have no sense of adventure.
8:15 pm on November 18th, 2013
Masquers: I looked up how long it would take to get from the rehab place to the Island. It looks like the getaway car will be in traffic for almost an hour and a half. A long drive in rush hour traffic. By then it will be time for supper so I hope the pantry is full.
Wait! Are we all meeting on the Island to welcome Nana home? I’m bringing ice cream because I need soft food. I have butterscotch, peanut butter and bananas to put on top.
8:37 pm on November 18th, 2013
Barb&Maggie: You really got the crud, didn’t you? I hope it doesn’t last too long. I’ve heard of putting Vick’s on your feet but not the cold sock treatment.
8:41 pm on November 18th, 2013
Nana!…Someone better bring the Hot-Wings and Beer!…snort!….Which reminds me that I have not spoken to my Brother Redbone lately about an order of Shine!…wheeze!…I sure do hope he is coming to the Nana! Welcome Home! party…chuffle!
8:41 pm on November 18th, 2013
Dawson, ha ha. You still remember my excellent photography.
8:43 pm on November 18th, 2013
Vicks!…Is that the nasty smelling stuff my friend puts on her weird little toes?…gasp!…Nothing like a whiff of Vicks to make me want to splort right out loud…grunt!
8:46 pm on November 18th, 2013
Dawson, also. I did score a goal as a defenseman which is just like Bobby Orr. Then a very large woman checked me into the boards, I crumpled down on the ice, was carried off, and had trouble making it into work the next day. That was the end of my hockey career.
8:47 pm on November 18th, 2013
Get-Away!….Oh, I found out that Natasha has been pulled over by the Washington Cops for driving like a Bat-Out-Of-Hell..snort!…She is giving the Cop a big ole sob!sob!sob! story right now…wheeze!…I hope she pulls this off…gasp!
8:55 pm on November 18th, 2013
If anyone can get out of a ticket, it would be Natasha. That is, if she doesn’t try and make a break for it. What will she decide to do? Perhaps someone can start watching the news and see if there is an “incident” being reported live on air.
9:06 pm on November 18th, 2013
Natasha probably has diplomatic immunity.
9:08 pm on November 18th, 2013
SiberH!…You are in the car with her so don’t say or post anything that could be construeed as evidence…grunt!
9:18 pm on November 18th, 2013
The was a report of a limousine turned away at the Washington/Canadian border because there was no proof that nearly a dozen dogs inside had had their rabies shots.
Mollypop’s Mom: You and Bobby Orr are twins! I’m glad you quit that violent sport.
9:19 pm on November 18th, 2013
I am real good at playing stupid, Rio.
9:21 pm on November 18th, 2013
If we are at the Canadian border, Natasha has gotten us lost. I knew I should have driven.
9:31 pm on November 18th, 2013
Ah Siber-H…if you had driven, as much as you love Nana, you’d be too tempted to continue into the far north and return to your natural habitat –and a visit to Snowhook.
9:31 pm on November 18th, 2013
The last time Franklin went to Canada we showed the guard the dogs’ rabies stuff. There were three Newfs in my friend’s van, and Franklin stuck his head around Kathy to see what was happening. The guard was entranced. Pet Franklin and sai he was a big boy. He had to explain that Franklin was just a puppy the big dogs were in the back. The guard let us through.
On the return to the USA, the guard was rude, demanded to see our papers, the dogs’s papers. Again, the only thing that saved us was the size of the dogs. This guy was scared of them. Took one look and let us through.
9:32 pm on November 18th, 2013
Well, finally Mom and Pop are back home. They went to an event by the Oley Valley historic Association. There was a General Hartranft there, who fought in the Civil War and went on to become governor of Pennsykvania. Mom said he is very old.
I am very interested in this Smooches for Pooches place. Aunt MPM, Please tell me more.
For all of youse guys partying on the island: we are not there. We brought Nana to Scott’s house so she would have help until she is very strong once again.
9:33 pm on November 18th, 2013
No!….I received this on my secret SDD which monitors all things weirdā¦sniff!
Breaking news! </strong
Porche With No Driver On Way to Camano Island! </strong
A bright red porch stopped by a local policeman right before it drove onto the ferry to Camano Island apparently had no one driving it. The car was filled with various breeds of dogs, but no sign of a human driver. Much Yarking and Yip-Yip-Yipping ensued after the cop forced the car to the side of the road. A white Maltese reportedly jumped out of the car and grabbed the policemanās pant leg. Then all of the other dogs jumped out of the car and onto the officer. He suffered no real injuries but almost drowned in Newf Drool. The officer lost control of the situation completely when all the dawgs jumped back into the porch and took off for the last ferry to Camana Island. Camano Island authorities are waiting for the ferry to arrive. There seems no way out for the rogue gang of Droolie Dawgs.
9:34 pm on November 18th, 2013
Momma says I spelled the name of my state wrong. Funny, I do not remember typing the word c-o-n-f-u-s-i-o-n.
9:36 pm on November 18th, 2013
Kat!….Well, that explains why Nana was not in the Porch when the cop stopped them…heh!heh!….I hope Natasha can evade the cops waiting at the port….snort!
9:37 pm on November 18th, 2013
Belle is quite lady-like waiting for her water. Macy? I think you would look good in that shirt. Have you taken up bowling?
Not going to try the cold wet nor anything else on my feet.
Riƶ, I told my brother about Airborne. He and his wife are flying for a visit with one of their sons and his wife. In February. Where it’s warm. Did I mention my brother lives in Maine?
Franklin will have to give Nana a welcome home kiss from me. I need to go to sleep. (Sorry Nana, just make sure you have a towel available)
9:41 pm on November 18th, 2013
Melanie!…I had no idea you even had a brother…grunt!
9:41 pm on November 18th, 2013
I love Nana so much, I am crossing this huge (shudder) body of water in order to get her home.
C.Hobbit, you are correct. It would be so tempting to head on up North.
9:42 pm on November 18th, 2013
Good night Melanie.
Macy, I think we should all wear those shirts.
I am on my way home. Momma says it is bedtime for Pennsylvania Huskies. Hah!
9:43 pm on November 18th, 2013
SiberH!….I hope you packed your water-wings…snort!….Things might get messy when you guys reach land…gurgle!
9:52 pm on November 18th, 2013
I think having Nana at home with Scott for a few days is a good idea. I think going cold turkey back home would be hard. I am happy that Nana is out out out of the rehab. I am impressed that she was only in rehab for 2 weeks. Way to go Nana!
9:56 pm on November 18th, 2013
Maskers!…When Maskers gives the “Go-Ahead” Jazz rift we will commence planning the big Nana Parteee!….Wooooo!…This might take a few days for Nana to readjust to being home and all that entails…sniff!…The fact that she is with her son is a blessing to us all…wuffle!
9:57 pm on November 18th, 2013
Heh, heh.
I think we’ve gone on a wild goose chase. Nana is home with Scott, safe and sound. If you dogs are on a ferry, you are going to the wrong island because you can drive to Camano Island – no ferry. Me, I’ve eaten most all the ice cream to keep this tooth numb and I’m now back home on the couch.
Hip hip hooray for Scott and Nana! And to all the Plunderers willing to help in the Great Escape!
10:01 pm on November 18th, 2013
Map!….I do believe SiberH was in the backseat of the Porch reading the map for Natasha…heh!heh!…Little Sammie is a hero! Just like in THAT…snorkel!…Although, she and the others might still be in a ferry-pickle!…grunt!
10:29 pm on November 18th, 2013
Has been very long day. First, certain Siber cannot read map for bupkis. Ve end up near Canada border vhere guard vas very rude. Is not his business vhere Natasha got shot for not rabies. Ve think he just vant to see under Natasha’s long, silky fur.
Ve still have cask of shiny stuff from Redbone, and crate of hot vings strapped on roof of Porsche. Still looking for velcome home party, but ve think Siber has us heading to Villow, Alaska.
10:33 pm on November 18th, 2013
Natasha!…snort!…Incredible and Edible!…heh!heh!….Turn that pony around and come back to my backyard…snort!
10:33 pm on November 18th, 2013
Okay, Nana is safely at Scott’s, no thanks to us, you might say.
I have had enough of this water infested land. I am calling Alice to come pick me up. Natasha, please drop the Porsche off back in my garage where I know it will be safe and well protected.
10:38 pm on November 18th, 2013
SiberH!….That Porshe loaded with Shine and Hot-Wings is not going any further south-paw than my backyard!…grunt!…You will get your car once it has been unloaded. I will keep everything safe and sound for Nana’s real parteee!…snort!burp!
10:45 pm on November 18th, 2013
Siber – vhat are you thinking? Drop Porsche off in YOUR garage?? Vhat vould Commander Bee and Natasha drive vhen ve vant to go vith top down?
Rio – vhat are YOU thinking. Your little pugness vould burst vith all those vings.
10:47 pm on November 18th, 2013
Rio, That is fine with me, but take good care of the car. Put it in your garage. You can always detail it some afternoon when you have nothing else to do.
10:48 pm on November 18th, 2013
Natasha, Just pay no attention to me and Rio. This is guy talk.
10:51 pm on November 18th, 2013
Plan!….Foiled…grunt!…I almost had my paws on all that shine and hotness…sniffle!
10:53 pm on November 18th, 2013
SiberH!…I did not want the car…grunt!…I wanted the grub and the booze…sniffle!wheeze!
11:07 pm on November 18th, 2013
Rio, Unloasd the car and I will pick it up. Natasha needs to go back to work for the Olympics and forget about her car. She has more importqant things to do than worry about one little expensive car.
That was some wild driving party. I’m exhausted.
Night All
The important thing is Nana is safe at scotts.
11:15 pm on November 18th, 2013
Elementary!….Wow!….While waiting for the arrival of a car-load of hot-wings and shine, I watched the latest episode of āElementaryāā¦wheeze!…I never really knew much about the original Sherlockās brother, but this turn of events is quite intriguingā¦..snort!snort!….I love the actor who plays the brother. He reminds me of John Cleeseā¦heh!heh!
11:33 pm on November 18th, 2013
Hello All,
First day on sleds today at -15. I took out my new anorak to give it a try and actually was a little too warm. That’s a good thing. Thank you for your support of the team and making a moment like this possible!

11:39 pm on November 18th, 2013
AJ!…You are livin’ the dream pal!…heh!heh!…Enjoy every minute of it…snort!
12:42 am on November 19th, 2013
Alice rushed out of here in a hurry about an hour ago. She didn’t stop to say why but she took the keys to the Lear.
I though AJ was being sat upon by Snowbella??? What is he doing up and about? (nice about his Anorak jacket)
I have been sorting and organizing and packing. I found a bag tonight that had been untouched since I left Minneapolis last April. snort?
It was nice to hear from LizF. and see her pictures. Thanks for posting the link Dawson.
Someone we haven’t heard from lately is Buddy and his pal Leno. They were suddenly here and then *poof* gone. sniff. I hope they come back sometime and let us know all is OK.
Nighty noodle

Appreciation for various other terrific article. The place else may everyone obtain that sort of info in this particular best approach to producing? I’ve a display a few weeks, using this program . around the look for this kind of information.
