Santa Fe

“So,” says Admin, “going to Santa Fe for the Left Coast Crime convention?”

“Apparently the hotel is full,” Spence says.

“And there’s just the one hotel in Santa Fe?”

“The fun of these things is all the readers and writers crammed together in one place.”

“Sounds swell,” Admin says.

Uh-oh. They’re glaring at each other again. Also this is one of those strange days when they’re looking very different from each other. There must be better human jobs than theirs – private eye work, for one! What could possibly beat bringing perps to justice? The expression on their faces when they realize they’re going down: we always get a kick out of that, me and Bernie.

“Wookie posted an interesting comment about Santa Fe yesterday,” Spence says. “Actually made me want to go there, even if it’s not what it used to be.”

“Who’s stopping you?” says Admin.

Spence doesn’t answer. He’s back to tapping away on the computer. Humans: sometimes I think they drew the short straw, whatever that means. And no offense.

Is he or isn’t he….going to Santa Fe? I’ll have to go back to see what Wookie said.

    Good morning Chet and everyone.

I think it’s the sopaipillas that Spence is interested in.

Spence, I really hope you decide to go. For one thing, the Loretto Chapel is within walking distance of the hotel., which is famous for a mystery staircase. mom really loves Ghost Ranch, which was the summer home of Geogia O’Keffe.
It is an hour or two away, but it is one of the most beautiful places on earth, IHHO.

Weird!… What bugs me is, why did Spencer receive that email about being nominated AFTER the hotel was already booked full?….snort!….Doesn’t this bug anyone else?….grump!

Good morning all – We agree that Spence really should go to Santa Fe, especially if he has never been. La Fonda is nice, but we think it would be good too to be able to get away from the crowds at the end of the day, or be able to sit down for a cup of coffee without being surrounded by adoring fans, of which we are sure that Spence has many. The ElDorado is also lovely, and right around the corner of the plaza from LaFonda.
Come on Spence – you gotta go… some of us are waiting to live vicariously as you sample soppapillas and green chili

Perhaps Spence received the email awhile before he actually told us about it. My dad and even my mom do that kind of stuff from time to time.

Don’t forget yummy red chili when mentioning green chili. Dogs love Soppapillas! We had some just a couple of days ago.

I think Chet and Bernie should get to Santa Fe so they could catch that dude that is robbing people at gunpoint in the downtown area. The cops aren’t having any luck.

There are many fine hotels in Santa Fe.

There might be, of course, a reason why Spence does not want to go . . .

Maybe he has to finish Book FOUR???

Still, he needs a break. I bet all the people there in Cape Cod need a break. Considering we are having another snow storm. And the Eastern part of MA is getting hit worse than we are.

Hi everybody, I’m back at Sam’s and it has warmed up like crazy. It was reported to be -26 near here the night before and I woke up to 28 degrees this morning. Back to ski country tomorrow. Mom got her refresher training so anybody need a backboard or a leg splint?

  28. B.Stover

Knee: Saw the acupuncturist today. Drove myself. He wants me to come in next week too and see if he can work on the swelling.

Tomorrow I see the surgeon. I’m not driving; my nephew will be driving me.

MollyPop: after doing 5 stairs today, up and down, I think I could use the splint. Not having a $500 ski jacket, she doesn’t have to worry about that.

Hey y’all! I think Spence should do the Left Coast thing, especially since something has opened up at La Fonda. He already came down South and to Texas so several Plunderers could see him. So he needs to continue his national tour — or perhaps he should make that an international tour for all the out-of-country Plunderers!!!

Melanie, are you on crutches, or just walking with a big brace?

  31. Mollypop
    6:57 pm on January 25th, 2011

    B. Ski jackets can be very expensive. Bogner can be way over $1000. Then you fall down, maybe blood or broken bone and here comes Mom with the scissors.

Off to the other room to put my knee up. See you guys tomorrow after the appointment.

I hope a good resolution comes out with the West Coast area. I think that March would be a great time to get out of the North East. Everyone south of us starts talking about Spring and we still can get snow storms.

Maybe the Cape is different though.

Rio, I will be surprised if the local news covers that event at all. They would rather report on drive-bys and bank robberies. I hope I am wrong.
I imagine they reported on the ski lodge burning because it was a good visual for them.

If Chet can’t make the awards, I wonder if I could accept the award for him. I am, after all, the same species. They would almost have to let me take part in the banquet if I were Chet’s representative.

Yes, please Mr. Husky please stop by here.

Macy’s mom here – I don’t want to bring down the tone of the blog but you guys are about they only ones I have to talk to. Yesterday, through mostly the bad moods of customers, I was fired from the big yellow box. After 9 years. I am in shock and Macy may not have much to say. I would think that eventually a person would run out of tears, but not yet. I just wanted to share the burden to help lighten it. Thank you all so much.

  59. Tupper and Gilly
    10:02 pm on January 25th, 2011

Macy’s mom – oh dear, how terrible for you! Is there any chance for an appeal to a higher authority? It does seem like 9 years ought to count for some kind of respect.
Our Mama got fired a couple of years ago, just cuz she wouldn’t spy on another employee for her supervisor. But it turned out to be the best thing ever. She had never been on unemployment before, but she signed up. So, she had an income, AND she had some time to gather her thoughts, AND she was eligible for all kinds of training at the unemployment center, AND it made her realize that if the job was corrupt, it was better to not be part of it.
And don’t think that just because you were “fired”, you can’t get unemployment…unless you were fired for stealing, or arson or some absolute criminal charge, you can file for an exception.
Please don’t cry – the Plunderer’s will be on your side.

  60. B.Stover

Macy, I believe your mom can apply for unemployment. If you quit, then you cannot, unless you can prove unusual circumstances. Not nice to do that to you after 9 years. Everyone here will have fingers and paws crossed for you.

Thank you for the kind words. My husband has already started the unemployment application. I on the other hand, just sit and cry or am zoned out on meds. It seems like the only way to keep from going completely over the edge. In my mind, there are just not that many opportunities for a “woman of a certain age”. The thought of becoming a cashier at Wal-Mart makes me want to stick my head in the oven, which is also pointless, as it is electric.

We are on your side and will send you our thoughts and prayers and positive energies. Pamper yourself if you can to make yourself feel better. Someday you will look back on this time with different emotions. Hey Rio – could you say that Vegamite to Americans is like Lord of the Rings to Kats…just not to their taste?
Macy’s Mom – just one last thought – the next time that you were scheduled to be at work, take that time to do something just for you! Paint your nails or call a friend who makes you laugh or do a crossword puzzle – just anything that YOU want to do that you wouldn’t be able to do if you were at work. And then toast yourself – you know, “here’s to me!” kind of toast.
And never mind that “woman of a certain age” stuff…you are younger today than you will ever be again.
Our Mama sends lots of support, but now she wants us to go to bed. Stay in touch.

    Dear Macy,
Please give your Mom lots of hugs for us Kats and Staff. We think that once she gets over the shock of the firing she will have time to realize that a job where you get no credit for coming in sick is a job that you are better off out of. Tell her to take the unemployment and rest up and get better. Then look at her options.
I think this might be God’s way of getting her healthy.
    Love and licks,
    Abbie and Alice

Vegemite!…Liz, am I spelling it wrong?…sniff!…This learned flavor could be compared to the Lord Of the Rings trilogy I suspect…sniff!…Because the love of the story comes from reading the books…heh!…Possibly, the love of Vegemite comes from it being fed to people from toddler on….snort! …A comparison between a beloved series of novels and a sandwich spread is hard to make…gruffle!

Tennis!…Murray is still battling on against his girl-like opponent…heh!

You are spelling it right, yes – good pug. I agree, we are conditioned into it. But the reason i don’t like LOTR is that I tried to read the books when I was young, early teens, and tried and tried and just couldn’t get into them. I suspect it’s because they are SO male – so few female characters and the few there are spend very little time in the story. The movies, on the other hand, I thought were very well done.

Yes, comparing them to a spread is a bit silly. I should compare it to, say, root beer. Do you drink that??

Liz!…Well! Forget everything!…I can figure out what LOTR means you traitor….snuff!…You and the Kats have a good time together pal..grump!

Liz!…I do not drink root beer…sniff!…I have been banned from beer altogether from an insipid poster by the name of “Lil Lexi”, but she never ever shows up…grump!…So why the hell am I still…?…sniff!…Anyway, Liz, I do not drink root beer, ever…grump!

Lord of All Creation, tonight we bring Macy’s mom before you. We ask You to bring solace to her aching heart, and we ask you to work miracles within her life. We thank You for creating an opening for the good things that will be coming to her.

Rio: I have tried several times in my (longish) life to read LOTR and I just couldn’t get into it–never could keep track of the strange names enough to keep the story going. And yet middle school and high school students start with The Hobbit and love it and go on to read all the rest. The students also loved the movies when they came out.

Thank you all for the kind words. I know I will return for days to read them. Today I was just zonked out on sedatives, which at least got me through the day. They are starting to wear off now and the pain is more than I wish to deal with, so It is off to narco-dreamland for me. I really don’t know what I would do without your support. –Macy’s mom loves the bloggers
