San Diego Union-Tribune On The Chet And Bernie Series

The Chet and Bernie Mysteries follow the exploits of an unlikely private detective team: down-on-his-luck ex-cop Bernie Little and Chet, his loyal canine companion. They met in K-9 school, but Chet “left” the force due to an unfortunate event with an unsuspecting cat during a class exercise. Bernie exited the police force soon afterward, and the Little Detective Agency was born. These funny and intriguing mysteries are first-rate, with Southwest locales adding a special charm. The addition of Chet offers the reader a hilarious perspective on the human condition. – Pat Tirona

The “addition” of Chet ??? Excuuuuuse me???? !!!

Good Sunday everyone. Chet, thanks for not posting about u-know-what that every news media is going on about today.

Good morning, Howlers! I don’t think I like Bernie being referred to as a “down-on-his-luck ex-cop.” Makes him sound like someone pitiful. I think he’s pretty lucky — except for his finances, of course!

P.S. I just got in trouble. Kind of. Mom came in and found me in her bed with my head on her pillow. She didn’t yell or anything. Just grumbled about having to wash the sheets today.

Kirby – John Hart books are almost as good as SQ’s.

OHs – our boy will be sorry about ND, too. He’s probably hoarse this morning.

u-know-what might have been a bit easier if Chet had had a blog then, but we know each other now. Take care everybody.

Oley, we agree about the addition. Sounds almost like Chet is an after thought, rather than the main character.

Wolfie was posting at 3:48 a.m. Isn’t that 12:48 a.m his time? Wolfie, why are you not snoozing away at that time of the night?

I am on a continuing winning streak. Barb rearranged her little freezer yesterday to make room for the 100 lb. of Bob she just brought home. She dropped a box of Omaha Steaks – tenderloins- next to the freezer, and didn’t notice it till last night. Since the box of steaks had been sitting on the floor for about 10 hours, she decided to cook them for me. Soooo, this morning for breakfast I got a half of a very fine steak. Does it get any better than this?

Was the cat “unsuspecting”? And do we know that Bernie was still in the police force when he first met Chet? Chet does have an interesting take on the “human condition.”

    Good morning all.

Little update on Kelly’s less-than-lovable FIL. They were betting 3 days to 3 weeks before his next drink. Kelly picked him up at the nursing home at 11:00 and dropped him off at his home at 11:30 Friday. He shooed her out kickety-split.

Well, he called them at 3:00 p.m. and had been drinking already. Since they had removed all alcohol from the home, that means in just over 3 hours he had gone out, purchased more vodka, and was half in the bag! Amazing to us!

Problem is that he is so disruptive to their family liife – he calls hourly, and if they don’t answer, he calls their cells, if they don’t answer, he sends a text, then in a matter of minutes he is emailing his current demands. Then he escalates from there! With addiction, it is only about them.

9-11!… Ten years ago this morning…snort!… I was probably just born then. We are watching the memorial and my friend is getting all choked up (again)….sniff!…Our plan to stay here all day will probably not fly with her mother and brother also have to endure one more day….snort!….For now we are not budging – in fact she will be getting ready to go work-out any minute now…heh!

We have been watching some of the specials on 9-11 also. Hard to believe it has been 10 years. Some of the interviews with first-responders and survivers are so graphic that it is hard to watch.

Hope all the attention doesn’t encourage that new threat they have been talking about.

I agree with you guys on the take of this review. Chet is the narrator; how can he be “addition”? Also picked up on Bernie and the police force thing. We know the upper people didn’t like him and that he left. Not sure how or why, but the new info in TDWKTM gives some interesting info.

Riö, I think your friend has a great idea. Also if there are any tourist sites she MUST see that is always a way to stop the “same old, same old”.

Sorry about the FIL stuff for your family Barb. I bet they’d like to change their phone numbers. Might stop him for a day. Oh and on the bet on when he was going to start again? I’m afraid I was right.

Anyhoo, I think I TOTALLY AGREE with Chet’s perspective on the human condition.

Melanie, We also had the impression that Bernie had already left the force when he met Chet.

How were the beans? How do you fix yours?

  11. Barb & Maggie
    9:45 am on September 11th, 2011

Kelly was telling Barb yesterday that she had gone over to FIL’s house while he was in nursing home and cleaned out the kitchen walk-in pantry that was filled to over-flowing. This was at his request. She spent half a day there, but do you think he said thank you?

No – he is fixated on a package of yeast that was in a baggy along with a roll recipe (from his bread maker). Kelly told him she would go on line and download the recipe, but he calls repeatedly and says “Did you find the yeast?” Of course, she can go buy more, but hasn’t had a chance yet. OMG, I would seriously have to bite him!

B&M, we do not understand how or why Kelly puts up with fil. That is thankless and is dragging down others’ life.

Bluecat, Mom & Pop received a text warning them not to watch that game. oops…we fell asleep waiting for them to come home last night. Do you think that’s why our boys didn’t bring that one home?

Good morning all – sorry we missed all of you yesterday – we were just catching up on the blog this morning.
Pyrapalooza was fun and funny. 50 massive white dogs, strolling around, with their adoring people attached to their leashes. Thats a LOT of fur!

We were also relieved that Chet and Bernie’s place was a haven from the news and sadness of today. But, we also remember the spirit of community and caring that came out of that day. For quite some time after, people were more courteous, more considerate of others and more appreciative of all they had.
So, that is what we chose to remember from this day. We want to remember the courage of all the emergency workers, the giving, generous outpouring of care from all over the world. And we remember and take to heart all those wrenching stories of how some folks never got to say goodbye.

In rememberance of all those souls lost, of all those hearts broken and of all those giving hands, we chose to remember this day by making sure that the people we love KNOW we love them.

So, on this day, we want to let all of you know that you are a very important part of our lives. We laugh and cry with you, we learn and teach, we support and get encouragement. And each of you is a special gift to our lives. We want you to know that we love all of you and are grateful to have this marvelous family/ community. Thank you for your open arms.

(Ok – in light of the day, we’ll even say it – we do love you Basil and Sage)

  15. Sasha
    10:19 am on September 11th, 2011

None of the Howlers except for me was living here, back then. Neither was Buddy or T.C. But you know, T.C. arrived shortly after and hence her name. Mom wasted spent countless hours watching news and grieving, instead of enjoying life as she should have been. Then, 17 days later, Shiek had his accident that caused him to lose his left eye. So the lesson Mom learned was that, while you are sad for other people’s losses, you can’t let that take away your focus and enjoyment of what you have. Because it can all be so fleeting.
With that thought, we continue to hope for a good hike today.

    Good Morning All!

Thank you, T&G for that lovely and introspective post. By the time I finished reading, my eyes were a little blurry and wet.

Kirby: Good eye, my friend. You would make an excellent detective! To all the inquiring minds….I accepted a position as an Editor in the Medical Writing Department of the biotech/pharmaceutical company where I am currenty working. After five years working as a document coordinator (read: Administrative Assistant), I will now have the opportunity to exercise my brain, and do more meaningful work. I expect to start the first week of October. The Prof and I went to one of our favorite restaurants in Dobbs Ferry, The Half Moon to celebrate.

P.S. Belle Starr, this new job will never take me away from sending you cuddles and tummies. Someday, maybe you can pack your pink, sparkling backpack and come to New York! XOXO

In the spirit of this day, I too, would like to thank all the Pluderers for your support, friendship, and love.

Barb was trying to explain the blog to a couple of relatives yesterday. Think we will read them T & G’s post. That just explain it all and beautifully expressed.

Oley, Kelly’s reason for doing what she does is two fold. First to try to help share the burden with her husband, Chad. Secondly, she had respect for her MIL who just passed. She doesn’t want someone who didn’t know Sue to come in and throw things out, without looking thru them first. It has nothing to do with loving feelings for the old “Richard”.

We like the review because it short, but some of the “facts” are doubtful. The search continues for that perfect one. There have been a couple of good ones, but too long in our opinion.

Macy: Thanks for checking in and letting us know you are in no danger. But that heat! It is very bad when one can’t even go for a walk in the evening.

Barb&Magpie: Poor Kelly! We think it is no use trying to do a good deed for someone like the fil. They definitely have their own agendas and as you said, it is always about them.

This morning I woke up thinking that the reason “shoppe” was spelled that way in the Middle Ages is that it probably resembled the sound of the Old English “sceoppa” from which it was derived. The “e” on the end would have been pronounced like a short “a.” (The scribal “e” I mentioned is always silent.)

The sun finally came out. I’m going for a walk.

Oley, Not just steak, but fillet mignon. Barb’s loss, my gain!

Barb is about 60 pages into One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson. Her character development takes awhile to develop, but her books get better as you get deeper into the story.

Here is our lovely plan for the day: grass cutting, sitting on the patio reading, having some lunch, and taking a nap. Does that sound heavenly, or what?

Rio, hope you survive the day OK. Maybe you could sneak a little llama poop on the sly!

We have now heard from just about everyone about the cookbooks, so I think the ones that we ordered are all taken at this time, although a few Plunderers (Tupper & Gilly; Dawson; C. Harris) still need to post their addresses on Dishlickers for us to mail the cookbooks to them. For those who have posted addresses, the cookbooks were mailed out yesterday and should arrive early next week (TMG notwithstanding). Barb & Maggie, check your SDD for more details on your order.

As regards placing a follow-up order, the deal that my mom was able to negotiate was a one-time special offer, and really cannot be repeated (she has a way of begging that I think she learned from me!) However, there are actually a number of publishing alternatives that can be found on the Internet and, if there is interest in ordering some additional copies, the best thing to do may simply be to check out those publishers.

We are going to start a series called “Slings & Arrows”. Didn’t know much about it except it was on the free pile up the street. YSAS says it’s very good. Canadian and the main dude is from Due South!
Bits from the back of the box. Passionate but unstable artistic director who’s haunted by the ghost of his predecessor. Each seams is one of Shakespeare’s plays. Backstage bedlam mirrors the onstage angst (they do “Hamlet”, “Macbeth”, and “King Lear”). Sounds fun.

I see there’s a new Jack Reacher book that the description says is the beginning of the saga. Does anyone know about this? We only read one when it was offered free on Kindle last year, then loved it and want to read more. You guys advised to read them in order – so would this new one be where we should start?

  38. Siber-H

Mollypop, I read the Reacher books in order all except for 61 Hours, which I read first. I would advise reading them in order.
Lee Child’s website says that he thinks you need to get to know Reacher before reading the one that is the beginning of the saga.
His website tells you what order to read the books and just where the “beginnings” one fits in.

Farm!….This morning we fed the little llama, the one in the picture, some corn stalks and my friend tried and tried to pet him but he would not let her…sniff!….He kept snuffling at me through the fence and I snuffled back at him…heh!….You guys should have seen Henry the Pot-Bellied Pig sleeping in his pen…grunt!…He was snoring to beat the band…wow!…Even my friend doesn’t snore that loudly…chorkel!

Escape!… So somehow my friend and her brother were allowed to leave the animal farm with me and come back to the hotel…wuffle!… We have another hour of “free” time before we have to make the 20 mile journey back there for, get this, “an early BBQ”…heh!…We fell for that trick the first afternoon we were here. There was no early BBQ and really, not even an actual BBQ…snort!…All lies, all the time. Just like how we were supposed to go fishing today at some lake and take a picnic…Lies!…Again, all lies!…grunt!…The good thing is we have to be back early tonight because we are leaving around 3:00am tomorrow morning to go home… HOME!…Someone here can’t freakin’ wait to get Home!!…wheeze! …Just so you know …sneeze! scratch!…. I could help clean-up along with 2 pups, a Jack Russell who thinks she owns the place, and 9 or 10 Kats…grunt!…All of which I have either had words with or chased off the porch…heh!

Leaving!…Well, we will have to leave in a few minutes to go back out to the animal farm…snort!…Maybe there will actually be a BBQ today. One must always try to think positive in these situations. Situations where my friend is expecting the absolute worst…gruffle!sneeze!

We read Second Son and really liked it too. It is not available in print, only on ebook. Think Mom read it in one sitting.

Take SiberH’s advice and read the series in the order it was written. There is one in the series that is a prequel but it helps to already know the character.

T&G, thank you for the wonderful post earlier. Dad is amazed by the “family” that has developed on the blog. He thinks it is really amazing that people who haven’t met have bonded to form the group we have. Thank you, Chet and SQ.

Yes, Wölfie, just couldn’t remember the name!

Riö, The Pack is hoping for the food fight. I’m hoping for what ever is easiest on your friend.

Patsy and I went to our beach today. She went wading and had a good time smelling things. The others used the pool.

I was going to take Dan to the Habitat for Humanity restore near us tomorrow. Luckily, I looked it up because it’s only open Fridays and Saturdays. Guess we’ll go on Friday!

We have tracked our 3 books, and they made it as far as Rockford, Il yesterday, and the package is now at a UPS location.
That should mean delivery tomorrow, Oh, what a happy birthday present that will be!

We have a delema because we have two Kate Atkinson books that are loan from another library. That means if Barb wants to read them, she has to do it pronto. This is going to be hard on the old girl!

Rio, Hopefully there will be a Bar-b-que and there will be a lot of spillage!

Back!….We are back and never ever going out there again according to my friend…heh!…I forgot to say goodbye to llama and Henry…drat!…BBQ consisted of some burnt cheeseburgers and a jar of pickles. That’s all I could see from my vantage point…grunt!…I got some, but not enough so I am begging for more right now while she is packing us up again….yeep!wheeze!yeep!… She is packing up everything and only keeping out what we will need first thing because we will be hitting the road really really early tomorrow morning….sniff! …Her mother wants to “get together” and discuss the travel plans…sniffle! …As far as we are concerned the plan is Get Up Early and Get The Hell Outta Here Lickety Split and Don’t Look Back!…dammit!

Is there a way to keep track of who is next? Post on Dish? Actually, if each recipient knows who follows them that should do the trick.

Oh Rio – so sorry that your “vacation” was so rotten. Mama is a firm believer in Choosing Your Family as opposed to just having to like them because they are related by blood.
She says most of her family is so crazy, she wonders how she ended up “normal”….or is she???

Wookie – Mama forgot all about posting her address at Dishlickers when she was in there doing the housekeeping. She will do it now, or you can just wait for the mail to arrive. She sent it along with her check.

Gotta go supervise the rest of the Packing for the Beach – we have to make sure they pack our blankies, and bones, and woobies, and treats and …..

Barb’s DIL is pretty sharp on the computer. Is the cookbook that we are getting from Wookie in a sprial form? She said she might be able to help Barb with making more copies. The other thought was ordering a pdf copy from Snowhook for $10.00. How do we do that? Is that on Dishlickers?

Rotten!… Well, someone here knew all along how it would bad the trip would be but did not factor in a few things that made it even worse than expected. She came along on the trip entirely for her mother…sniff!… We have learned something on this trip about her mother. Not only do we love her and want to protect her very much, but the fact is she treats brother the same way she treats my friend, so now my friend knows NOT to take it personally…heh!… As brother says, “She is at the age where she says whatever comes into her head no matter what it is, so just filter a lot of stuff out.” ….snort!…Good advice. Tomorrow mother will ride shot-gun and he can take his own advice all day long…chorkel!

T&G: I am fortuante to have a wonderful family, but I like the idea of being able to choose your family not related by blood. In a way, that’s what it seems like we have here at Chet’s—kind of like when a stray finds their forever home.

Siber-H: Belle Starr is a bit disappointed that she didn’t get to go on the rescue mission. She was looking forward to meeting the Iditarod fan that got things going between Chet’s and Snowhook.

We’ve had a busy day. Friends of the Kennel, Mick and Jodi (not giants, I assure you) came by to dismantle a greenhouse we have on our property. We’ve never used it. We call it an even trade for a meat saw they gave us. It was fun to spend time with friends.

Sister!… It’s not that my friend does not love her sister very, very much, it is just how things have turned out over the years that is disturbing….sniff!… Although, there may be a glimmer of hope for the future. All the new farm animals may be the key. Henry included! …. Maybe. Only time will tell…snort!

Wookie!…I supervised the packing of the few toys she brought along for me..sniffle!…She says I can sleep in the big, big bed because my bed is already in the car…heh!

    Safe traveling tomorrow Rio.

We are now going to watch a Netflix movie, as we have watched a lot of the tributes to 9/11 already.

The movie sounds uplifting. A Storm in Summer, 2000, with Peter Falk as a Jewish deli owner, and Aaron Meeks as an inner city kid that comes to stay with him for the summer. Looks good.

We are also going to grill a steak from our new beef order. Ta ta for now

Rebecca, if the trip had lasted any longer we might have been mounting a rescue mission. It would have not been Rio that needed rescuing, though.

The relationships that we have with our families of origin can be complex indeed.
Especially when addictions are involved. In mom’s family, it was alcohol, and it took years of therapy for us to understand how much it impacted her. With growth and maturity came healing.

Hi everybody, we are still here, still panting.

Mom has been pretty introspective today. The fact that she was working for American Airlines That Day made the entire situation so very surreal. Hundreds to thousands of people sent flowers to our building, the world HQ of AA. Someone dressed teddy bears with ribbons bearing (ugh bad pun) the names of all the flight crews lost that day. Eventually, the flowers were diverted to other locations, as the air was overwhelming with the smell of the flowers. To this day, strong flower smells take mom right back there. The end side of the building is all windows, with flights from DFW coming straight at us. On every floor, people gathered at the windows to take in the unbelievable sight of clear, planeless skies. *sigh* What direction would her life have taken if not for this terrible tragedy? She was one of the first to be laid off, a week later, the first wave of a mass of people in this area to lose jobs in the aftermath. *double sigh*. I think she needs to think about something else now.

Strange, too, is the fact that Rick Perry was our governor then (and now) and now is himself running for Top Dog.

Good night my wonderful, thoughtful anipals.

    Goodnight all.

I also am glad that Chet did not post about 9/11 today.

Hope that Rio has a tolerable trip home and that the insight from her brother helps in the days ahead. I have to use that insight with my father fairly often. He is a micro manager and likes to have things done HIS way. It is one of the only ways he has left of being in control. Getting old is no fun and I keep working at remembering that fact. Sometimes it helps.

I saw a beautiful black Great Dane at the hardware store today. What a pretty dog. 132 pounds and really large, but slender. Wow.

Macy, thank you for sharing. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to work in the airline industry and be so directly impacted, only to be laid off the following week. It must have been heartbreaking. I have you on my list of daily prayers, asking our great Creator for a fabulous job for you. Take care.
