RIP: Solomon Burke
“Uh-oh,” says Bernie. “Here’s sad news. Solomon Burke died. He still had it up to the very end. That Nashville album was great, and so was Don’t Give Up On Me.”
Bernie has a sad look on his face. I never like seeing that. I go over and give him a little bump with my head.
“Sure hope those twenty-one kids of his will be all right. Plus the ninety grandchildren and the nineteen great-grandchildren.” Bernie sighs and gives me a pat. “Guess he had a good life, big guy.” Hey! I know that one – having a good life, I mean.

What a voice!
I'm not telling YSAS about all the kids though!
Makes me wonder just how many progeny Chet has out in the desert and in Mexico??
4:35 am on October 13th, 2010
Melanie, YSAS might take him as a role model! Better stick to the no babysitting policy. I wonder how many mothers there are for all those children.
4:35 am on October 13th, 2010
Melanie, We thought about YSAS when we read about the 90 grandchildren. We read that Solomon Burke died at an airport(in Europe, maybe) over the weekend, and I believe he was 70.
That was a good video.
Wonder if we will get back to Drey Gulch tomorrow!
4:45 am on October 13th, 2010
Dry Gulch.
We have been reading our new book this morning. Sorry to read about your health issues, Mel. And that was sad about little Kelly Green, too.
5:05 am on October 13th, 2010
Good morning all.
5:11 am on October 13th, 2010
Shudder!…21 kids!…snort!… 90 grandchildren! …wheeze!…and 19 great grandchildren…holy smokes!….They do not know the cause of death, but the guy weighed in around 400 pounds….hmmm… He weighed more than AbbieTheKat does!….snort!
5:32 am on October 13th, 2010
Melanie, We are up to chapter 5 in Dan's book. Have to leave now for a hair cut (Barb, not me). BBL
5:37 am on October 13th, 2010
In one of the strings of Facebook, someone asked Chet how he would explain gravity. Here is his reply:
Bernie says that some dude named Newton was sitting under a tree and a Slim Jim fell on his head. Where's that tree, I'd like to know.
5:49 am on October 13th, 2010
Newton!…heh!snort!heh!… That Bernie is a hoot!…snort!
6:12 am on October 13th, 2010
I'm finally caught up here. I loved the picture of Rio ignoring his friends adminishments.
Rio – Mom thinks you are adorable.
6:17 am on October 13th, 2010
Molly!… I told my friend what you said and she just shook her head No…. snort!
6:24 am on October 13th, 2010
The Pack wants to know where that tree is also!!
6:58 am on October 13th, 2010
There was an interview on NPR I think Monday with King Soloman. He said that many of his kingly robes were so valuable that the insurance company did not allow him to wear them on stage anymore. (obviously, the interview was from the past, no interviewer across the human bridge) Also that his crowns that he wore on stage were modeled after European royalty. Quite a guy, referred to himself in the third person throughout.
BTW all my info is from mom, so if there are errors, talk to her.
7:02 am on October 13th, 2010
Wow!
Watching some of the Chilean miners being raised to the surface after 69 days underground.
Oh oh.
I hear there is going to be some heartbreak in Dan's book, "For the Love of Puppies". We were sure blessed with our blog litter, weren't we?
7:02 am on October 13th, 2010
AND on the subject of Chet's progeny, I would think that Bernie and Chet would want to prevent more unwanted puppies from entering the world. I had no say about my puppies, but they will not be contributing to the overpopulation and euthanasia of so many of our kind. So sad… I know Chet just wants to be a guy, but…
7:05 am on October 13th, 2010
Dawson!… I am reading about that too!… snort!… I’m so happy and relieved those guys are finally being freed…zow!
7:56 am on October 13th, 2010
Rio, We loved you pictures too, especially the 2nd one where you had your eyes closed.
I bet they will do a book/movie about those miners. So glad most are safe now.
Barb sent back Nanny McPhee, so Wallace & Gromit should be sent out today from Netflix. Yea!
8:28 am on October 13th, 2010
Movies!… Suddenly my friend decided that we are into classic Audrey Hepburn movies…snort!… She is going to order Love in the Afternoon,… A Nun’s Story, and How To Steal A Million….grunt!…We have not seen any of these before for some reason… heh! …Also on her list is Paris When It Sizzles and Funny Face …sniff!…We have seen these 2 before, I think…snort!
9:03 am on October 13th, 2010
I usually balance my checkbook with no trouble.
Today I feel like Bernie . . .
Think I'll wait until tomorrow morning, when I'm awake again.
9:37 am on October 13th, 2010
Melanie!… If you are up to it, you should post the photo of Gertie and George on the blog…snort!…The one where they are both looking at the camera!…grunt!…What a great pair of Newfs!…sneeze!…Or I guess everyone could just go out to your website and see them for their selves…heh!
10:28 am on October 13th, 2010
Rio, One of Barb's favorite Audrey Hepburn movies is "Wait Until Dark". It is scary and not a light romantic movie, but we just watched it on one of the old movie chanels not long ago. Did you see that one?
10:38 am on October 13th, 2010
Everyone should go to Melanie's web site. Just click on her name next to the Newf avatar and then on her log. The Newfs are eating pumpkins!
10:56 am on October 13th, 2010
Computer!… My computer is having major problems today….grump!… No Internet there for a while – now it is dragging butt and I’m sure it is going to explode any minute now….grrrr!
MagPie!…Yup, but it has been a while since we watched it….snort!… Maybe we should add that to our list…grunt!… Just to break up the light-hearted sappy comedy stuff….wheeze!
Molly!…Did you see Gertie and George?…heh!
11:04 am on October 13th, 2010
Rio – Where are the pictures of Gertie and George?
11:05 am on October 13th, 2010
Came home for lunch break and got Dan's book in the mail 🙂 Argh! Now I have to go back to work just when Dan and Zoe are looking into each others' eyes and deciding they are going to move. Thank you, Melanie and Dan and Zoe. This is going to be soooo fun. Hmph. Didn't even have time to check on the Newfs eating pumpkins.
11:10 am on October 13th, 2010
Pumpkins. The newfs must like the feel of them when they bite rather than the taste. They're having fun.
11:14 am on October 13th, 2010
Molly!… Just keep scrolling down after the Pumpkin pictures…grunt!…There is a whole story about those two young Newfs!…snort!
11:29 am on October 13th, 2010
Melanie, Do they show the Irish Spotted? They are adorable. Barb told her daughter to check them out, too. Have you had the Irish Spotted in your prior litters, or did this color pattern come from the sire's side? Is it a recessive gene? Many questions.
11:40 am on October 13th, 2010
Boy have you guys been busy.
B.Stover: They love the taste of pumpkin and squash. They will steal them off the counter. Raw. And don't get me started on what they can do to a pumpkin pie!
Irish Spotted Newfoundlands are a recessive gene, so both parents have to have it. We knew Patsy (Gracie and Katy's mom) had it, because she had one around 5 years ago. Her son Franklin had one with a friend's female.
Now Katy and Grace had the same stud. (Studly Jonah) Katy does not have the gene because all nine of those puppies were black.
Grace and Jonah have it, but instead of getting the 1 out of 4 that is usual for recessive genes, they came up with 7 out of 12.
We figure it's because they both have a great sense of humor!
BBL, going to watch a Touch of Frost.
11:42 am on October 13th, 2010
Barb & MagPie: Missed a question. Yes, they are beginning to show the Irish Spotted. But not many.
12:10 pm on October 13th, 2010
Uh oh!…We started Dan’s book, but every time Zoe had to suck stuff out of a puppies nose we got queasy… gag!…A sad start to the book. We both snuffled when Bess was looking for her missing puppy…sob!… But now we are reading about Bear and his great sense of humor at the buffet table…heh! …I like Bear already!
12:15 pm on October 13th, 2010
Mom just finished TFAT. It was wonderful! We won't say more until all of us here have read it.
12:23 pm on October 13th, 2010
Grunt!…Pumpkin Joke!
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
12:42 pm on October 13th, 2010
I give….what do you get?
And why isn't anyone using spoiler alerts when discussing Dan's book?…….Grump…..as someone would say.
12:48 pm on October 13th, 2010
I'm here, but it has been a busy day. Thanks for the reminders to go to Melanie's website. We'll do that this weekend when we have more time.
Most dogs like pumpkin right out of a can, strange, but true. I want my own pumpkin now since I found out the Newfs get to eat fresh pumpkin. All us dogs here should have our own pumpkin for Halloween. I don't think the cats would like it, but they would be welcome to try it.
We are looking forward to starting Dan's book tonight, and we are going to scream if there are interruptions.
Mom has to go out now and spray some water on new stucco that was put on the house today. I'm not into helping with that.
12:49 pm on October 13th, 2010
Oh Rio – Too funny – a pumpkin Pi
12:50 pm on October 13th, 2010
Tell us the joke, Rio. We haven't heard it, and then I can tell it to my dad, who can always use new jokes.
12:51 pm on October 13th, 2010
Spoilers!….Do we need to do spoilers for Dan’s book? It’s not a mystery with a big plot twist, is it?…grunt!
12:53 pm on October 13th, 2010
Cute joke! Dad will love it!
1:35 pm on October 13th, 2010
Rio: I don't want to know the content of Dan's book from the blog. I want to read it. So, yes, we need spoiler alerts.
1:40 pm on October 13th, 2010
Love the joke Riö, going to send it to my sister.
We also loved the posting about Zoë. She really laughed.
We're going to have to read the book again; it's been awhile.
Here's Gertie and George!

YEA!

Melanie – Does that mean Dan is going to become a Plunderer? That would be awesome!
1:50 pm on October 13th, 2010
I'm so happy for Dan, Melanie!! That is great news for all of you!!
Very cute Newfs and, oh my, how they have grown. What a nice looking pair they are with beautiful markings.
1:53 pm on October 13th, 2010
Don't spoil Dan's book for us, please. They arrived at Sam's house and she doesn't want to share. Something about I called her a crabby little diva. Anyway, we'll be there tomorrow so she can bite my ankles – get it over with – and then I can take my book.
1:54 pm on October 13th, 2010
Oh better yet – Sammie will be at the groomer. I can get my book without getting my ankles nipped.
2:34 pm on October 13th, 2010
Melanie: Great that Dan is coming home. Gertie and George are so very cute. I love the markings.
2:40 pm on October 13th, 2010
Such good news about Dan! Melanie, we are happpy for all of you.
Will the boys be coming home?
2:44 pm on October 13th, 2010
Wahhhh,
I am still waiting for Dan's book. I hope it will come tomorrow as we have a sad little trip to take to Minneapolis to go to a funeral for a co-workers wife. It would be nice to have some reading material for the trip.
And now I hear Dan is coming home on Sunday. Wow! Way to go Dan. All the Kats are wishing you the best as you recover at home.
The Whooping Cranes love pumpkin too. And we always put ours out in the woods for the deer when we are done with it.
2:52 pm on October 13th, 2010
Good for you, Dan. You didn't let any grass grow under your feet at Rehab.
George and Gertie: Too cute for words.
3:24 pm on October 13th, 2010
Dan!…. I’m so glad Dan is going to come home….snort!snort!… Oh my gosh, I sure hope he stays home this time…dammit!…Bess you watch out for him and make him stay home my girl!….wheeze!…Sit on him if you have too!
Everyone!…Hear Ye! Hear Ye!….Spoiler Alerts for Dan’s book from now on!… grunt!… Until after we all have read it – Just like T-FAT….heh!…And speaking of T-FAT, who has not finished the book yet?…snort!
Sammie!….She’s at the groomers Again?….heh!snort!heh!… It’s going to be tough getting that short haired little missy a real acting job as a Maltese… grunt!
Cranes!….They like pumpkin too?….golly!… The Newfs and the Cranes have the same taste buds in common… sneeze!…Who’d a thunk-it?….grunt!
3:34 pm on October 13th, 2010
Dan home on Sunday – what good news! I'm on dinner break and page 92 of his book. Please make sure no Newfs lay down on him until he's better, ok?
3:48 pm on October 13th, 2010
A Catty Librarian: Dinner Break? Have you heard? We get to have Thanksgiving dinner together in November. Maybe Staff will show up with my autographed books. Yippee!
3:57 pm on October 13th, 2010
Rio, I thought you were going to be my agent!
4:24 pm on October 13th, 2010
Sammie!…I’m working on it…grunt!…Still need the contract drawn up and someone has been too busy to help me with that… sniff!…Plus, all this constant grooming is not helping matters…wheeze!… I see jobs out there where they need a Maltese, but they have started specifying , “Only Real Hair Please Audition”. ….cough!…I will keep digging and in the meantime maybe we can get that contract together and signed…heh!heh!
5:08 pm on October 13th, 2010
Hmmm…. We are still “trying” to watch The Event… hmmmm…. All we can think about is having “24” back…sob!sob!sob! … This show is sloowwwwwishhhly boring and it almost brings us both to tears…..gasp! snort!…One more chance tonight and then DONE…grunt!
5:14 pm on October 13th, 2010
Melanie, I spent the entire evening looking back through your blog. Such fine little, and not so little, creatures. And seeing all of Dan's ups and downs, of which I was not aware. (OK?) We would start reading the book if dad hadn't put it somewhere we can't find it.
Staff, must be Karma, now you have to wait instead of us, he he!
5:26 pm on October 13th, 2010
Min Pin!… I didn’t want to say it first, but YES!…Staff has to wait before us to read a beloved book…heh!…Her WAHHH wahhhhing doesn’t affect us at all…heh!… and Yes! Melanie's blog is just wondrous!…snuffle!
5:42 pm on October 13th, 2010
We finished reading Dan's book. It is a very good book and it is one of those special books that you are very thankful was written. It is a story that was supposed to be told and shared with other people and dogs and cats. We are very glad that Dan, Zoe, Melanie, and all the Newfs shared it with all of us.
Reading Dan's book has been a wonderful way to spend this quiet, peaceful evening. Thanks again for this lovely gift; Dan, Zoe, Melanie, and Newfs.
Siber-H and Mom
6:11 pm on October 13th, 2010
Sigh…Thank you SiberH!….snuffle!….Thank you so much for that touching review…sniff…It is one I hope Dan and the whole family will treasure. Because you are a dog of few words, but these few words were great!… sob!
6:39 pm on October 13th, 2010
I just saw on the news that the Rangers celebrated their victory last night with a ginger ale shower out of respect to Josh Hamilton, who is a recovering alcoholic. Love it!
6:52 pm on October 13th, 2010
Go Rangers!
