RIP: Paul The Octopus

“Hey,” says Bernie. “Paul the octopus died. He’s the one who predicted World Cup soccer winners – in fact, I went with his Spain pick in the final this year and scored ten bucks. He lived in a tank at Sea Life in the German city of Oberhausen and made his picks by opening the lid of one of two clear plastic boxes, each containing a mussel and a team flag.”

Yeah? But how did he open the mussels? Not so easy, as I know from experience.

Bernie gives me a look, like he’s having an idea. “So who do you like in the World Series? Maybe we could bury the two team caps and then … “

What is he talking about? All you have to know is good pitching beats good hitting. He’s said that himself so many times I’ve lost count. Meaning it was more than two. Two’s enough, in case I haven’t mentioned that already.

Wow! I may be the first to comment today, which would be a first. Hello and good morning everyone. Wet here in Chevy Chase, although we dodged a real bullet, just some rain, not much else (and no horrible winds or we would be without power now, thank you very much PEPCO). Sounds like Bernie and Chet are going with the Rangers. That will make Rio happy. Busy day ahead, another quilting event to be hosted here. Lots to do, meet and greet, meet and greet, and then lots of supervision (especially during lunch break). Whew! Wookie the quiltmaster

Paul was never interested in the sports only the mussels. Clever octopus. I do wonder how he got them open. And I have no idea how Wookie gets that Bernie and Chet are for the Rangers. I personally hope they both lose except I promised Wolfie I'll root for the Giants.

SH: Here is my physics prof. friend's explanation of isotope. The last sentence is the simple explanation. (He also said that there is a baseball team in Springfield on the Simpsons called Isotopes. I told him about the New Mexico team.)

Let’s put some facts together (more than you need):

The chemical periodic table is made of elements (Hydrogen, Oxygen, etc.).

Elements are defined by how many protons they have (Hydrogen has 1, Helium has 2, Oxygen has 8, etc.)

When the atoms are electrically neutral, they have the same number of electrons as protons (equal number of positive and negative = neutral). If you have different numbers of electrons – then you talk about the ion (like the +1 ion of Oxygen .. means one less electron).

Most of the elements (other than Hydrogen) also have neutrons with the protons in the nucleus – and the number of neutrons could vary (but if you vary the protons – you have changed to a new element).

So, how do you tell oxygen (6 protons) with 6 neutrons … from oxygen with 7 neutrons .. or 5 neutrons … we call those others the ISOTOPE of Oxygen. [There is usually a certain number of neutrons that make a stable atom … if you add or subtract, you might make it slightly unstable .. so usually isotopes are more unstable than the base element.]

So, there are elements (that are neutral and stable) .. if you add or subtract electrons, you talk about the ion of that isotope. If you add or subtract neutrons, you talk about the isotope of that element.

Does that help? Isotope refers to the name we give a chemical element that has more or fewer neutrons than the stable base element.

They said on the news that Paul was 2 and that was old for an octopus. I would have thought they lived much longer than that. Does anyone know?

We will root for the Rangers, too, as they seem to be the underdogs. I think Giants are predicted to win tonight. Bee, I know you will be glued to the tube, as will Barb!

B&M: Literature is the most interesting subject.

I still want to know why isotope/equal place was used. I found this on Wikipedia:

Atoms having the same atomic number Z but different neutron number N, and hence different atomic mass, are known as isotopes.

I'm pondering whether this answers my question.

Good morning all. You've all got the exciting weather. We only have cloudy skies here on the high plains, with a little threat that rain will make the blanket of leaves in the back yard into an uggy sodden mess.

The definition of Isotope – one of those things I kind of get while I'm reading it but after that I only know enough to be dangerous. Thanks for the small white paper, B. Stover. My, my, I think I need breakfast now.

    B. – Great isotope explanation. Mom knew about that but hadn't thought about the instability. We wonder if the people naming the baseball team thought of that.

Bee, Barb never had to do worse than disect a deag frog, which she did not like one bit!

This was way before my time, but when daughter Kelly was in college, she did a behavior mod. class, which involved working closely with a black and white lab rat. When class was over the lab rats got experminted on, leading to their deaths. Kelly kidnapped (ratnapped?) her rat by sneaking it out in her coat. Her prof. caught her, but since Kelly was gorgeous and a good student, the prof said "I didn't see that" and let her continue on her mission.

Thus the rat was brought home on break and given to Barb and younger brother Josh as a "Christmas present". Kelly even named her "Holly Berry, the Christmas Rat". Needless to say, Barb was stuck with that rat for almost 3 years.

Good thing I wasn't around back then!!!

Wow everyone, isotopes, dead frogs, ratknapped rats . . .

I think Paul just didn't want to have to pick the World Series winner. .

I was a psychology major. My rat experience was testing to see if gerbils or rats were more intelligent. Had to learn to press a bar for food.

Consider the gerbils: hyperactive little beasties gotten from a pet store and ended up as my lab partners pets.

Consider the rats: bred in the lab at William and Mary from rats who had survived experiments.

The gerbils would run and around and around and around and around and jump up and down and then hit the bar by accident. An attitude of "Wow, where did that come from?" Then repeat. They NEVER learned.

The selected breed of Rats (think "Secret of NHIM") got in the lab box. Hit the lever by accident and then ate everything by just hitting the bar constantly.

I won't tell you about the cockroach maze.

Mollypop: That's a good question about the instability.

SH: Did the people realize that?

There's a book called Physics for Poets but it's in my office at school and I can't remember the author's name.

B&M: I'm glad Kelly saved the rat. I have objected to some of the things that go on in our labs at school but to no avail.

If you don't mind a little mess, come on over for a party. Maybe we should wait until the series is in Arlington, just over yonder a ways.

Countdown 6 hours….get snacks ready..move other dogs off my preferred TV watching spot…nap so I don't fall asleep during the game…nap some more..move dogs again…nap…run around yard..move dogs AGAIN, did they not understand what DIBS means?

  42. Wookie of Chevy Chas

Melanie — My dad took a number of psychology courses in college, including the rat one (I think it was called Experimental Psych). His rat was the most laid back rat that ever existed. My dad named him Marcus Arelius, after the Roman Emperor who was also one the most well known stoic philosophers. It took Marcus forever to figure out that hitting the level produced the pellet, but he just didn't care. But when it came time to master more complex sequential behaviors, where certain behaviors had to be partially extinguished and then re-learned, he could do those much faster than any of the other rats, because it was unnecessary to extinguish the intermediate behaviors since he never learned them in the first place. Almost single-handedly disproved virtually everything that BF Skinner hypothesized. Wookie

B.Stover: "The Secret of NIMH" is an animated movie about mice and their problems. The mother must visit the Rats of NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) where they were experimented on, increasing their intelligence to human level. Not that that would take much from what I can see.

Stover, Thank you! Excellent explanation of the isotope, what I understand of it, but I do kinda understand it. I am even more puzzled now why they named a baseball team, the Isotopes. To answer your question, NO, I do not think that the people realized that it had to do with instability. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!

On the t-shirts that the team sells to the fans is the word Isotopes and a large symbol of the atom.

Stover, he does as long as he is pitching in the game. If they put a pinch hitter in to bat for him, which they often do later in the game, then the pitcher is out of the game. Pitchers are usually considered lousy hitters, but Cliff Lee did get a double.

In whatever league the Tigers are in the pitcher doesn't have to bat, right?

  115. Alice Johnson
    4:29 pm on October 27th, 2010

    BStover,

The pitcher hits in National League Parks (San Francisco is National League) and he doesn't have to hit in American League Parks (Texas is American League).

Another weird thing is the League that wins the All Star Game in July is the league that has the home field advantage in the World Series. The National League won this year for the first time in years so we are starting the World Series in San Francisco.

I checked with Mr Staff on this information. He knows lots of this stuff. Staff made him a sweet potato pie so he is happy tonight. He says he will think of her (while she is at quilt camp starting tomorrow) evertime he eats a piece of pie.

Wookie, How was your quilting day?

But the windshield has been replaced, the boy's gums are healing, Dad came home for a few nights although he is still not speaking to my boys. Mom is pretty unhappy about that because she says that parenting is the one job you just can't quit, even though you want to sometimes.

Well, so much for pitching duel. And the fielding (six errors!) left a bit to be desired as well. Nonetheless, it was still an exciting game, but being seven down in the ninth inning was just too much for a real comeback. The question now is whether either team be able to score like that tomorrow.

Staff. Thanks for asking about the quilting day. We actually hosted a boutique bee (making items to be sold at the boutique at my mom's guild's upcoming quilt show in December). How was it? In a word, exhausting. Meet and greet, meet and greet, supervise, supervise. And when lunch time came, did I get anything? Not a thing. Can those quilt ladies pack it away when they chow down or what. Nary a morsel fell to the floor for me. And now the house is overflowing with boutique items, although I am doing everything I can to help my mom keep them straight. Wookie, tired but still standing in Chevy Chase

Sorry I haven't been very attentive the past few days, but Mom has been hogging the computer! She writes and directs the Christmas play at her church every year, and she was on deadline to get the play finished. No matter how much I begged she wouldn't let me use the computer! So now the play is finished, and I'm all caught up. I saw the map project, and just wanted to let you know I'm on it!

Oh, and GO RANGERS! Mom says she remembers when Nolan Ryan used to pitch for our Angels, so besides the Rangers being in the American League, she's rooting for them for Nolan's sake! Last night just illustrates why it's a four-out-of-seven series — because one game just doesn't tell the whole story!!!
