RIP: Jerry Leiber
“Uh-oh,” says Spence. “Jerry Leiber died.”
“Lyricist?” says Admin. “Wrote tons of hit songs with Mike Stoller in the fifties, sixties and seventies?”
“Yup. Including Hound Dog, Stand By Me, Yakety Yak, On Broadway – and this one, my personal favorite of his.”

Here’s the Wikipedia article on Jerry Leiber.

Good morning all.

Dear Plundererers,
My name is Belle Starr. I also answer to Luna and Tenzing.
No one knows that I get on the computer and follow the Plundies. But I fear that my situation is so horrible that I must reach out to you. What is my situation? Let me tell you, it’s bad.
* Out of the kindness of my heart, I share my bed with two full grown adults. Do I get a thanks? No.
* I got green pant splattered all over me, and did anyone bother to write a story about me? No.
* I have to eat kibble like a common dog—common dog! No one has tried to make me anything from Dishlickers. Speaking of dishes, I have to share the dish with Luna and Tenzing. I don’t mind sharing with mama, but Tenzing has boy germs.
* I volunteer to make sure my mama, Luna doesn’t float by laying on top of her for my own nap time. Do I hear ‘Thank you Belle Starr,’ or ‘You’re wonderful Belle Starr,’ or ‘Would you like some ice cream for your troubles?’
* I have to share my tenshuns with other dogs leaving me to only receive six or seven shuns at a time.
Rose, if you are there, can I come and stay with you for a while? I will sit in your lap and you can worship, I mean pet me all you want. If the answer is yes, please let me know as soon as possible so I can start walking—they won’t let me even get a driver’s license.
Oop, someone is getting out of the shower. Got to go.
Perfectly yours,
Belle Starr

Morning all! “On Broadway” should be YSAS’s song!
After the rice episode last night, the Pack cleaned off every piece of fruit on the counter. They had just gotten ripe. They are as bad as fuzzbutts!
Dog, did they get in trouble . . . except Patsy. She was upstairs with me when the incident occurred.
Hi B.Stover! You almost ready for school?
9:39 am on August 23rd, 2011
Poor Belle Starr . . . (wiping a tear from my eye).
I’d ask you to come here, but I’m afraid the pack is in trouble today. And I don’t think being one of 10 would be any better than one of 40 (when they are all there).
9:52 am on August 23rd, 2011
R.I.P. Jerry Leiber. Is that all there is?
Trigger: The counter surfing is getting out of hand! (And into the mouths of dogs…except Rio.)
Perfect! I mean…Belle Starr! Don’t start walking yet. It is a very long way to Rose’s house. Besides, a little green makes you stand out more and Luna would float away if you weren’t there. No…you better stay right where you are and hope for a Frosty Paw just once in your lifetime. I’ve never had one either, if it makes you feel any better.
9:52 am on August 23rd, 2011
Hi Melanie and Belle Starr. I’m working on the syllabus for each class today. (I have two classes.) Start one week from tomorrow. I’ll be posting some thing on my blog later this week related to Frankenstein. (And Rio: I never torture students….hardly ever.)
10:18 am on August 23rd, 2011
Favorite!…. Our favorite here is “Stand By Me”…snort!… Another talented old guy bites the dust. When will it stop I ask you? When will it stop!?….grunt!
Toy!….Last night Puss N’Boots asked about how my new toy would fit in with all my other toys in my warm soft bed….sniff!…Well, everything has its place and this new toy is a bit on the large side which posed quite a problem…wheeze!… Last night when I got upstairs to my bed my new toy was smack dab in the middle of my bed….grunt!….So I had to snuffle it over to the side, but it kept rolling into the middle. So I’d snuffle it back to the side and it would keep rolling right back to the middle….gruffle! …. I ended up sleeping in the bathroom on her robe that had fallen off the peg….sniff! …. That damned ball is still in the middle of my bed….grump!
10:32 am on August 23rd, 2011
Oh, Bellie Button (aka Belle Starr) has been up to no good today. Typical. She explained that she knew Rose invited an evil pug to visit her so why not a perfect Belle Starr. She mumbled other things on her way back up to ‘her’ bed. I can’t win with that one…
Rio: I’m sorry to hear the baseball toy caused you such grief last night.
10:34 am on August 23rd, 2011
Rio – you poor dear little pug. When the ball rolled into the center of your bed, did it strike you? More than once? Cuz you know what they say…
3 strikes and you’re out (of your own soft bed)
tee hee

Doc, good morning!
Prof:
I hope you’re all quite well.
Class:
Quite well; and you, Doc?
Prof:
I am in reasonable health and happy
To meet you all once more.
Class:
You do us proud, doc!
Prof:
I am the Doctor of the English Class!
Class:
And a right good doctor, too!
Prof:
You’re very, very good,
And be it understood,
I command a right good class.
Students:
We’re very, very good,
And be it understood,
She commands a right good class.
Prof:
I have my doctorate,
I can teach and moderate,
am good to adolescents;
I am never know to scream
As my class will try to scheme
And I never never torture students!
Class:
What, never?
Prof:
No, never!
Class:
What, never?
Prof:
Hardly ever!
Class:
She hardly ever tortures us!
Then give three cheers and one cheer more,
For the hardy Doc of our English Class!
Then give three cheers and one cheer more,
For the Doctor of our English Class!

Belle Starr – oh don’t I just know what you mean!
Without me here, we would have bears, snakes, fuzzbutts and little birds just wandering around aimlessly. It is I, GillyFlower the Glorious Herder, who keeps them in formation!
And what do I get??? Either yelling or laughing. I ask you – is that any way to treat one who is doing such serious work?
Maybe we should form a Union – yeah, thats it – a Union of Perfect, Underappreciated Girls.
ooooo – wait a minute – that would make us P.U.G.’s….maybe we need to work on that name a little more.
10:48 am on August 23rd, 2011
Melanie – we LOVE your song. And now that CHarris is back around again, we’re gonna sing it REAL LOUD just for her!
anna one, anna two, anna
MY GALLANT CLASS….
10:53 am on August 23rd, 2011
Snorting here Gilly! PUGs indeed!
10:53 am on August 23rd, 2011
Loud!…. Why so loud? Is CHarris hard of hearing?…..snort!
10:54 am on August 23rd, 2011
Gilly, Keep working on that. There are already enough P.U.G.s around this here blog!
Big storms here this morning, wtih more to come later. Perhaps some damaging winds, too.
Have to go back and read what happened at Me3lanie’s last night.
10:58 am on August 23rd, 2011
Ok, how about the Union of Fearless, Lovable, Excellent Angels?
ooo – wait – that would make us F.L.E.A.’s
nope – gotta keep working on it

Why yes, Dawson, yes it was. A whole meatloaf. One of my most lucrative counter-surfing episodes.
Franklin: Good job! The pack sure made quick work of that rice and fruit. Not our usual fare, but we take what we can get. And, you never know when some doggie delicacy will show up on that counter top.
Rio: Never fear. There are many techniques used for smaller dogs to counter surf. You’ll soon be right up there (so to speak) with the best of them.
11:14 am on August 23rd, 2011
Did I tell you about my last counter surfing experience? I think I did, but here goes – Barb had her daughter and kids out a few weeks ago. She was going to make this deliciuos salad with chicken breast sliced on the top. She was talking to Kelly and I walked in and spit out this big slimy thing that looked like a raw oyster. Turns out it was the 2nd chicken breast that had been defrosting on the counter. Have no idea what happened to the first one. Being dog people, they washed it off and cooked it. What could a couple little teeth marks hurt?
11:20 am on August 23rd, 2011
Waiting, waiting, waiting
and anticipating
things to come.
Waiting for…..
The Dog Who (13 days)
Patches (2 days)
And…..
I know there was something else, but can’t seem to remember. Hmm. Pondering…..
11:46 am on August 23rd, 2011
Masquers – could you be waiting to be herded? I can help you out.
11:52 am on August 23rd, 2011
Melanie: Let’s go to my classes, each of us riding a two-wheeled scooter (whatever it’s called) and singing your lyrics. Quite impressive I think!
11:58 am on August 23rd, 2011
Bee and Melanie – Mama says she would buy tickets to see THAT operetta!
11:59 am on August 23rd, 2011
Dear Belle:
What you EAT KIBBLE. My Wookie would tell you to “just walk away!” Poor baby, no adoration for a perfect girl You should get lots of Frosty Paws for your treats and green should only be in the form of “Greenies” We feel your pain and you need to tell your Momma to get with the puppy program!
12:03 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Bella!…I feel your pain because I suffer every day…sniff!…Every damned day. …grunt!
12:18 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Barb and Maggie: Now you’ve grossed me out. Ach!
12:21 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Melanie and B.Stover: Yes, me too! I would buy tickets to see that opera, to see you both on scooters and Melanie wearing the same costume as that lady on the video and singing. Yes, I would pay many pretty pennies to see that. Heh heh heh.
1:20 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Hey, this could be a new fund raiser for Snowhook!
Mom would pay big bucks!
1:24 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Rio, you may have to give up an old toy to make room for that big ball. It’s a problem. Or perhaps a bigger bed!! You can always get more toys to fill up the extra space. Maybe SiberH will loan you his new stuffed huskies.
Poor Belle Star, you must get your humans better trained!
Where is Rose?
1:37 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Gus&Boobear, That’s a negative on loaning the stuffed huskies to Rio. I can’t get to them to loan them to anybody. When does Trigger’s class begin?
1:39 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Give-up!…..What do you mean “give-up?”….snort!….Do you mean throw-away? Is that what you are trying to say?….grump!….Never! Never would I give-up one of my hard-earned toys….grunt!
Bed!….A bigger bed is out of the question. The one I have barely fits in her room now…sniff! …Plus, she is too cheap to buy me a new bed, what with that morbid Iowa trip coming up….grunt!… The hotel rooms are booked, so there is no turning back from the trip now….snort!….I wonder if we are taking my bed and all my toys along….wuffle!
1:41 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Raw chicken? eeewwwwwww!
Very uncouth I must say
All kats would agree too
We prefer it cordon bleu
1:43 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Suffer, suffer, suffer. That’s moi moi moi. They blame me for everything – like holes dug in the sofa. Sheesh. They make me eat dry kibble. I’m groomed every two weeks and my beautiful long Princess hair is in a buzz cut.
1:48 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Yes, where IS Rose?
I miss her posts.
Princess Sam! I saw an article you would be most interested in – namely, the benefits of chapstick for pets. And here they didn’t think you knew what you were doing digging in that purse!
2:07 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Earthquake! The building was shaking and making cracking noises. Now the news says it’s 5.8 with the epicenter in Virginia. We’re far away in southern New York State! Wow!
2:10 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Masquers, I need the article on chapstick to show my family.
2:10 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Melanie: Besides my students (the captive audience) we seem to have another built-in audience for our opera debut!
2:12 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Yikes! Mollypop are you okay?
2:19 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Wookie, Are you okay?
Rose would have felt it also.
There was an earthquake last night on the Colorado/New Mexico border.
2:21 pm on August 23rd, 2011
B. – I’m fine here, we just swayed for about 25 seconds – but Wookie is near the epicenter in Virginia so I hope he’s fine. The Howlers and Tyb should have felt it in Pennsylvania too.
2:25 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Earthquakes!…It’s the beginning of the end!…yeep!
2:36 pm on August 23rd, 2011
We are just coming out from under the bed. And now we are
getting aftershocks. ( western Massachusetts)
We think this calls for closing Crazy Lady Land and going home to check on damages.
Wookie! Please check in! And Rose too. We are worried about you.
2:42 pm on August 23rd, 2011
One of the members here just came in and said her son works at the Pentagon. He called her to say he was safe but they were evacuating the building. Just in case.
We’re heading back under the bed!!!!
WOOKIE!!!!!
2:43 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Oh, no! Earthquake!
We used to live in Southern CA & went through a scary one there. It was about that same size – 5.8.
Yes, Everyone on the East Coast please check in!
Very concerned here – Bear
2:46 pm on August 23rd, 2011
We are checking the news service now.
2:50 pm on August 23rd, 2011
I just heard on the news that it was felt in MA…back under the bed girls!
It may be awhile before Wookie can check in with us but I know he will as soon as he can because he knows us.
The earthquake in Colorado was the worst one in 40 years.
2:51 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Ok- another member who lives just a couple of miles from Melanie said she never felt a thing at home. But a member who was at work about 14 miles north of here said her whole building was swaying and creaking.
Scary stuff going on in the world these days
2:56 pm on August 23rd, 2011
A friend of mine who lives about 15 miles northeast of me (closer to Detroit) felt it but I didn’t.
CNN is reporting that some water pipes at the Pentagon broke.
2:58 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Siber-H! What was the magnitude of the one in Colorado? Yikes! Rio lives there!
2:58 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Hope you are OK out there. Barb is at Crazy Lady Land this afternoon. She is suffering thru a 4 hour work week, but next week she has to get back to reality. The high school girl is off to college, so Barb will be working every Thurs and Friday, at least till we move.
2:59 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Hi everyone and thanks for all of the concern. Yes, it was definitely an earthquake (about 5.9 on the Richter scale at the epicenter which was about 100 miles outside of DC somewhere near Richmond, VA) and we felt it big time here in Bethesda. The house shook some but no breakage and there does not appear to be any structural damage. Most importantly my food bowl is safe and secure.
My dad was in his office building in downtown DC (twelfth floor) when it hit, and he told my mom that you could definitely feel and see the building move back and forth. It was definitely very scary. He even had a couple of things fly off one of the shelves in his office. In the downtown area of DC where my dad works, basically every office building was evacuated after it hit. Also, the cellphone system was horribly overloaded and it was impossible to place a call for quite a while. They have let people back in the buildings now, but my dad was not able to speak to my mom until he got back into the building. Right now the main concern is the possibility of any aftershocks. Eveyone is also hoping that the subway is not affected (the subway system here has enough problems of its own without dealing with earthquakes). That’s it for the time being — over and out from earthquake central. Wookie
2:59 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Well…I was going to take it easy today, but now I’m wide awake!
3:03 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Wookie! Glad to hear your dad is okay! Nana says she didn’t realize the epicenter was outside DC. No.#2 Son works for the airlines so he would have felt it for sure. No contact so far…
3:03 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Thanks Wookie.
Just wait til Melanie gets home today and hears about all the excitement she missed.
Can’t wait to hear Lettermans jokes tonight about “shaking things up in DC”
3:05 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Good to hear from you Wookie!! Thanks for checking in so quick.
Bear, It was a 5.3 in Colorado and it was felt as far north as Colorado Springs. Rio lives further north than that. From what I read, thousands of dollars of booze and soda were lost in Trinidad, CO. That info just leaped out at me in the article that I skimmed.
3:06 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Odds!…I can’t believe Wookie and I both had to live through Earthquakes within the same 24 hour period….grunt!….I think I need to go buy a lottery ticket…sniff!
3:08 pm on August 23rd, 2011
SiberH!…You didn’t need to blab every single detail about how far north the earthquake was felt, now did you?….wuffle!
3:09 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Thanks for letting us know Wookie. Stay safe and keep your food bowl safe as well!
3:12 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Wow Glad wookie is safe. And Mom and Dad of Wookie. I need the map of the Plunderers again. I know Rio, I didn’t save it. Drat. OK I checked the cookbook. Kirby T Penworthy is in South Carolina. I hope he checks in soon. Hopefully all is well with his family as he is alittle further away than Wookie’s family.
Also did youse guys see this? It was on the facebookie up at the top of the blog. I wonder how close Melanie is to Hingham?

When my house started to shake I hid in the closet. Now I’m out and Daddy is home. I don’t care about my food bowl like Wookie does, it’s filled with yukky kibble. My toys are safe so all is well.

thanks Mr.Husky. And drat!
3:37 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Earthquakes. Yawn. We were traveling across country several years ago and stopped at a rest stop for the night. I slept through a storm of cycle velocity winds on the front seat of the moving van with nary a care, while the rest of the family was freaking out.
Sammy: I will look for the article on chapstick and have mom scan it for you.
3:39 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Damit! The Ipaw again! Cyclone velocity winds! jeez.

I’m back from my sister’s Birthday Lunch! People who were outside of that building felt the earthquake, but we didn’t. My nephew felt it at the their house.
Dan and Zoë didn’t feel it. But then again if the Pack started to run through the house, who could tell?
My guys are waiting to hear from the other side of the family. They are near the epicenter. No phone calls can get through at this point.
Wow! My sister said she did not expect the earth to move when she turned 55. I said to wait until she turns 60. I think I’ll go out of state!
5:50 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Hello everyone! Mom is filled with anxiety for some reason. She keeps talking about an earthquake, whatever that is. We didn’t feel anything. Mom says her building was shaking like crazy, and stuff was rolling around up on the roof, making all sorts of noise.
5:51 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Melanie – So that’s what made this whole building shake – your sister, for crying out loud!
5:51 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Well, we felt the house shaking. T.C. told me I had to lose weight because when I jumped off the table, it caused the house to rattle and roll.
We are seriously worried about Rose.
6:10 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Buddy: I wonder where Rose is.
6:10 pm on August 23rd, 2011
My guys have still not been able to get a hold of the other side of the family.
I tried with the landline; rang but nothing else.
YSAS took a picture at Lispenyard and Broadway. Not sure if that’s spelled correctly, but he said this sidewalk was not like that this morning.

6:48 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Does anyone have Rose in their emergen-tree contact?
Melanie – we vote to take up a collection to send your sister on a looooonnnngggg trip for her 60th. Gadzooks-can you imagine what it’s gonna be like?
6:58 pm on August 23rd, 2011
T&G: I just tried to look up Rose on Facebook. No luch.

I hope we hear from her soon. Want to make sure she and the Prof made it though the earthquake okay.

Hey, y’all! Just a quick post because my girl has supper ready. Thanks for your concern, but we’re just fine here. Mom didn’t even feel anything, but my girl and boy were on upper floors, so they felt some shaking.
Right now Mom is more concerned about the hurricane. She stopped at the store tonight to get some food for me and the kats, and decided to get some “hurricane-friendly” food for humans while she was at it. She got out to the car with almost a hundred dollars worth of groceries, but no kat or dog food! So she had to go back inside to stock up for us. I think I’m a little insulted!!!

Good Grief!
I leave for half a day and the whole place starts rocking and rolling. Everybody stay safe. I heard on the news that no one was hurt so Rose should be okay but I do wish she would check in.
I’m getting involved with the characters in White Wings. Dan’s writing draws you in. I’m enjoying it and wondering where the next 362 pages will take me! 🙂

Its been a long night. We were all alone worried about aftershocks because Mom & Pop had to go to a viewing…a viewing of what? we do not know.
Mom & Pop both had to work last night. Pop didn’t get back home until 4:30 a.m. so we are all very tired and going to bed.
Good Night to all.

Oh, Sam….heh heh heh
OK, It isn’t so. I was supervising Staff from the kitchen table. (I can counter surf with the best of them) Staff tends to forget the pots and pans on the stove. What is it with help these days?

We are watching a movie called Welcome to the Rileys. Interesting. Salty language but pretty good so far. Hope all are well, and that we find those MIA.
Good night all.

Rio – we do dishes too – just check out our (adorable) picture in the Dishlickers cookbook! We are sure that was what Alice meant when she mentioned the task at hand.
We are unpacking. We have boxes and crates and bags and packages that all need to be unwrapped and categorized and prepped for shows. And somewhere in those boxes is the most valuable thing of all – a bag of Chili Cheese frito chips! (you can’t get them in MA – have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous? Mama always ships a bag or two home for “special treat”)
11:00 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Chili!…Fritos! You can’t get chili cheese fritos?…heh!…I’ve never heard of anything so ridiculous…grunt!

SiberH!…You just missed an amazing catch by Cargo!….wooooo!…. He stretched way out and caught the ball and then slid about 20 feet on his face…heh!…What a guy!..snort!
11:10 pm on August 23rd, 2011
Uh Oh!….Someone here is calling it a night…grunt! ….She says we can listen to the rest of the game on the radio in bed…snort!… Good! I get to be up on the big bed tonight. That damned baseball toy is still sitting in the middle of my bed acting like it owns the place…grump!sniff! …g’night!…burp!

I’m in the doghouse! Well, not literally. I’m in my regular house, but I’m in some trouble. I got in a fight with one of Those Girls. I grabbed ahold of her neck and wouldn’t let go. It’s not like I bit clear through or anything. I didn’t even break the skin. But when Mom and Dad yelled at me to stop, I didn’t. My girl finally had to throw a cup of water on me, then Mom grabbed me by the scruff of my neck when I let go. Then I got banished to the laundry room. Sigh. Life is hard with these darn interlopers. This is my house, y’know?!

Oh Kirby -thats just not fair. And we bet that naughty puppy said something rude to you first, didn’t she?
Tell your Mom and Dad that you need extra tummies and walkies and cookies. Once you have figured out that you can boss those girls around, the temptation to prove it may just get stronger and stronger. But if they can prove to you that you are still Top Dog in the house, maybe you will be able to tolerate those beasts for just a little while longer.

Hey Wookie’s dad, just so you know, i tried to send the file to your email but it was blocked as spam! I’ll try again later, or think of something else…

I can’t even tell you how it all started. All I know is there was some barking and some yelling and I ended up with Maggie’s neck in my teeth. But the good news is that they let me out of the laundry room and back in the living room. I was laying on the couch while the girls were on the floor. Things were pretty tense in there for awhile, but I think it’s OK now. At least I felt comfortable enough to come in the office and get back on the computer. The problem is Those Girls are going to be here a lot longer — probably until next spring. We get along most of the time. It’s just sometimes they get on my nerves! Luckily, when everybody’s gone, they’re the ones who go in the laundry room. (Mom says I should tell everyone it’s not animal cruelty — it’s a really big laundry room! When this house used to be divided into two apartments, it was one of the kitchens.)

Liz. Thanks. My dad says if you can’t send it to our home email, you could try sending it to his work email instead. That might work better. Wookie

Hi guys, and thanks Wookiedad, i’ll try your work one.
I mostly have to lurk because of the time difference. Either i’m off to bed when you’re starting or i’m at work and (whispering) can’t really be on here. But i hope everyone’s okay over there.
